Pleasant News
It has been a season of inspections, - it started with the Life Safety Code, followed by the PEAK evaluation, then the annual VA inspection, and finally the annual KDADS survey. I want to thank our staff for their patience, perseverance and professionalism in navigating our organiza-tion through these inspections, with results we can feel good about. We are really proud of our staff. On a different note, we are always on point when it comes to protect-ing our residents and their personal property. Please help by seeing that all resident clothing, equipment, decorations, etc., are marked with the resident’s name. Daryl Regier, has been an important part of the Pleasant View team
for many years. We wish him well as he plans to retire in the later part of
September of this year. Daryl has worn many hats at Pleasant View,
(including the editing of this newsletter) and we will truly miss his exper-
tise and willingness to help us.

East View Villa and Estates Activities
Hello and Greetings to our friends in the Estates and East View Villa! I hope everyone has stayed cool during the hot dog days of July! August is set to have more fun and exciting times. School will be starting so please watch for the kids when you are out and about on the roads. Hopefully we will have cooler weather that will help with any outdoor activities that we may have. During the month of August, we will be learning how to make cheese. Have a talent show to see all the different talents we have in our Estates. As always we will have our reg-ular schedule of Exercises, Bingo, Wednesday Game Nights, Bible Study, Chapel on Thursdays, and Ice Cream on Fridays Featuring also this month—Fishing, Crafts, Breakfast Trip. Son Life Quartet as our Tuesday Program. Wednesday Game Night special meal this month will be bring your Favorite Salad. And as always watch for flyers of upcoming events that aren’t listed on the calendar. A quick look back at the months activities before we move into next month—We had a 4th of July party that was a blast—lots of hot dogs were ate. There was food as far as the eye could see on more than 2 ta-bles that were 8ft long. It was lots of fun socializing and drinking cherry limeades. We kept the July blast going with a Breakfast trip to Neighbors Café and the later on in the month was our Kansas City Royals Game night with snacks. We had birthday celebrations of EmyLu Gantz, Wil-bur Martins, and Elsie Winter during our ice cream socials on Friday. Also we celebrated and beat the heat with Ice Cream Toppings, Root Beer Floats and Goats Milk Ice Cream. Have a great July and Blessings, Jennifer Wilson ext 150 Life Enrichment Coordinator [email protected]
Wellness Blog Hard to believe that summer is almost over! The heat has been a won-derful reminder just how rough a good old Kansas summer can be. But with this heat and sun, the ground has produced some beautiful bounty for us to be very thankful for. Here are some ideas to liven up your meals with this bounty God has blessed us with! 1. Fire Up the Grill - Use the grill to cook vegies and fruits. Try grilling mushrooms, carrots, peppers, or potatoes on a kabob skewer, brush with oil to keep them from drying out. Grilled fruits like peaches, pineapple, or mangos add great flavor to a cookout. 2. Expand the Flavor of Your Casseroles - Mix vegies such as sautéed onions, peas, pinto beans or tomatoes into your favorite dish for that extra flavor. 3. Planning something Italian? - Add extra vegies to your pasta dish. Slip some peppers, spinach, red beans, onions, or cherry tomatoes into your traditional tomato sauce. Vegetables provide texture and low-calaorie bulk that satisfies. 4. Get Creative with Your Salad - Toss in shredded carrots, strawberries, spinach, watercress, orange segments, or sweet peas for a flavorful, fun salad. 5. Salad Bars Aren’t Just for Salads - Try eating sliced fruit from the salad bar as your dessert when dining out. This will help you avoid any baked desserts that are high in calories. 6. Get in on the Stir-Frying Fun - Try something new! Stir-fry your veggies—like broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, mushrooms, or green beans—for a quick-and-easy addition to any meal. 7. Add Them to Your Sandwiches - Whether it is a sandwich or wrap, vegies make great additions to both. Try sliced tomatoes, ro-maine lettuce, or avocado on your everyday sandwich or wrap for extra flavor. 8. Be Creative with Your Baked Goods - Add apples, bananas, blueberries, or pears to your favorite muffin recipe for a treat. 9. Make a Tasty Fruit Smoothie - For dessert, blend strawber-ries, blueberries, or raspberries with frozen bananas and 100% fruit juice for a delicious frozen fruit smoothie. 10. Liven Up an Omelet - Boost the color and flavor of your morning omelet with vegies. Simply chop, sauté, and add them to the egg as it cooks. Try combining different vegies, such as mushrooms, spinach, onions or bell peppers.

Pleasant View News August 2017 Issue Jeremiah 1:5 NLT
I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.
Growing up, children, in my opinion, fall into one of three vocational groups: 1) those who confidently know what vocation they will enter; 2) those with several interests and talents, who are wrestling with more than one vocational interest; and 3) those who are clueless, who are in great need of guidance by an older and wiser person. I was one of those in the second grouping; but also, I never imagined then that one day I would become a pastor. Indeed, for many of us, surprising changes of direction do occur on “the highway of life.” Regardless of what we may think, God has a plan for each one of us, which He knew well before we were born. Sometimes, these callings are pleasant and exciting, as when one is called to be either a king or presi-dent. Other times, the person’s calling is difficult and challenging, as when he is born with a physical affliction, or lacking intellectual acuity. Regardless, the believer in Christ can trust in the goodness and wisdom of the Lord; for He knows best, and will one day perfect every one of the deficiencies found in us. By faith and confidence in our God, may we all say, “The Lord is GOOD…” (Psalm 86:5). We are thankful for the good attendance at the Thursday 6:30 P.M. Chapel Service; and we are grateful to the many guest speakers and churches who lead the PVH family in praise with encouraging music, and ministering to us with God’s Word. Those ministering in chapel this month are Inman Mennonite Church on August 3, Hoffnungsau Mennon-ite Church on August 10, Bethel Mennonite Church on August 17, Mr. Jasper Franklin on August 24, and St. Peters United Church of Christ on August 31. Those who have passed on to receive their eternal reward since the last publication are Betty Arnold on June 28, Patricia Adelhardt on July 5, and Harry Burton on July 12. May God bless and encourage each of you by trusting in the Savior, the Lord Jesus, and with increasing joy in the Scriptures.

August 2001 marked the first edition of Pleasant News edited and printed by the current editor. The previous editor, Bev Gaeddert-Regier set a record of 25 years as editor before retiring in 2001. This editor is retiring in September and the August 2017 edition marks the last publi-cation for this editor to edit. It has been a joy and a privilege to work and serve at Pleasant View Home. However, it is time to move on to other ventures as retirement beckons and new daily rigors await. May God continue to bless Pleasant View Home. Daryl Regier

In the spirit of a new school year starting I thought I would look up infor-mation on subjects taught in 1920’s and 30’s and compare them to the subjects taught now. That information was not nearly as simple as I thought it would or should have been to find. When I was in school in the 80’s and 90’s, we had the basic subjects: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, History, art and music. From what I was able to find, that was the basic list of subjects in the 20’s and 30’s also. I remember being taught a form of “new math” in grade school. All I re-member of it is that it was basically done by using tally marks and it was only introduced one year and I don’t remember ever hearing of it again. When my oldest daughter was in grade school she was learning how to add by using her fingers and I was one of those “back in my day we didn’t learn like that” kind of dads. I remember hauling my book bag full of books home to do homework and having all of my papers spread out on the floor or table. Now days I hardly see my kids using any book. Everything is done on the computer. Their papers are done on an IPAD and emailed to the teacher. Some of those basic subjects are still taught but technology has drastically changed the way they are taught. On one hand it seems to make school life much easier and very fascinating. On the other hand it is also frightening and complicated. Kids have so much thrown at them all at once. My 4 year old is learning things I didn’t learn until 1st or 2nd grade. I en-courage you, as the new school year approaches, to talk to your older family members and your younger family members about the similarities and the dif-ferences of your school days. Hopefully it will provide an opportunity to have an enjoyable conversation with your loved ones.
I’ve been told that I didn’t speak too often as a youngster but when I talked, I said something worth listening to. Those that know me now are aware that I’ve changed and am not too bashful about verbally sharing my thoughts. With this being my first contribution to the newsletter though, I’m hoping that my absence from writing past articles is more reflective of my youth and willing ness to share information worth your reading. Pleasant View has acquired the ability to ease the burden of paying our bills. I’m afraid we are not necessarily making them smaller but similar to arrange-ments with utility companies, we can initiate payments from your bank account to pay our invoices. We’ll continue to mail monthly statements for your refer-ence. If you are interested in eliminating the need to write a monthly check, please contact the business office and we’ll assist you with the process. Additionally, it is now easier to make donations to Pleasant View. We will still gladly take a check, stocks and crops but there is now an “Donation” icon on the bottom of our website’s home page that can be clicked. It will lead you to a site that accepts credit and debit card payments. Obviously, we would love for you to give it a try. 620-585-6411 Tod Ritcha, CFO

July was the best yet! Got a new little dog on the neighborhood, went shopping at Et Cetra, Winona had special family over from Lithuania, we spent a good amount of time at our own Inman Museum and also at the Hutchinson Cosmosphere seeing and doing a lot of activities. Our residents are enjoying the hot summer inside!!
Our yearly outing to Nurse Janet Regehr’s farm was very successful again! Weather was hot, cat was cuddly, gator rides were fun, flowers were outstanding and the cinnamon rolls were better than the best!!!! Thank you Janet!

WALNUT COURT
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Wilma Symonds—August 14th
August 2017
OUTINGS TO BE ANNOUNCED!
Evelyn Martin April 15, 1921 ~ June 23, 2017
Evelyn will be missed by her neighbors and staff . Although her presence will be missed, we are not sad for her passing for
we know her prayers were answered. She anxiously waited for the day God would call her home. On June 23, 2017, she
closed her eyes, left her worries, her aches and her pain behind,
took her Savior’s hand and went home!
Walnut Court
It’s almost time for the Kansas State Fair! The fair is September 8-17 but we are so excited we are making plans now! If you would like to meet your loved one (or ride along) at the fair please contact Robyn (unit coordinator) or Barb ( interim activities/social services) to find out what day and time we will be heading off to see the sights at
Kathy Metzger, Walnut Court Team Leader and AD/SSD, has resigned her position. We miss her in Walnut but she continues to help with ac-tivities throughout the other neighborhoods so we still see her from time to time! Brieonna Phillips has assumed the Team Leader role and Barb Allen has agreed to assist with activity and social service duties until the position is filled. We thank you both for your dedication to Walnut Court. We enjoyed a trip to the Kansas Cosmophere in
July. Hutchinson is fortunate to have an attraction like that.

The Plaza
Wow it has been so hot and muggy this past
month, but it sure has helped our vegetables that
we are growing. We have picked some and served
them with meals and have used for salads. We
ventured out to The Barn in Burrton for lunch
and to the Deli in McPherson. The Residents
and Staff enjoyed grilling and doing poppers on
the 4th of July. We also enjoyed Arby’s and
Braums. This month we are gearing up for the
Kansas State Fair on September 11th. Weather
permitting and as long as the temperatures are
not above 100 degrees. As our residents can not
tolerate that heat for long. Our Take-Out Tues-
days will be from Subway and Kentucky Fried
Chicken. We will be going to the Anchor Inn and
to IHOP.
We celebrated Ron Hawkins, Elaine Veatch, and
Richard Renner’s birthdays this past month.
Virginia Lindsay will celebrate her birthday on
August 31st.
Kat Jennings and I will be out to a conference on
August 15th,

Heritage Inn Hello Everyone! We had a fun filled month with all sorts of activities! From our trip to Marquette, Ks to the Motorcycle Muse- um and Sun-dries. And the Barn in Burton, Ks. To stay cool we did some indoor ac-tivities. Like Bingo, col-oring and trivia. I want to say a big thank you to Millie Loss’s daughters band for coming out and singing to us! Next month we will be having a Back to School pool party and order in fried chicken from KFC. We are sad to say we loss a member of our Heritage Family Mr. Harry Burton went to be with our Heavenly Father upstairs.

We went to the Inman Museum this month and Mr Vogel gave a us tour. He did a wonderful job. He is very knowledgeable about the items there. I have been
there multiple times and it just gets bet-ter every time I go. There is always something new to see. Some of our very own residents ( some past and some pre-sent) here at PVH have some of their own personal property in the museum . To me that is what makes the museum special is that it is about the people from this community. It is all very well dis-played. So if you haven't been to the Inman Museum I highly recom-mend you going! But when your done be sure to follow your nose across the street to our local restau-
rant. They always have a such yum-my food….. cheeseburger or better yet their veranika and a piece of homemade pie! Have a safe and blessed August.

Our bingo so-cial is the best! The kitchen is always trying to come up with a unique snack. This is water-melon ice pops!
It is made from real watermelons and residents thought it was very good and “refreshing”! After we went to
Walmart for our retail thera-py we stopped
at the Pizza Ranch for lunch. I'm sure they regret their all you eat buffet as we all pigged out!!!
