Patron of Springwood Dog Training, Representative on Sports Council It gives me great pleasure to be the clubs Patron, a position that I have now held for 9 years. As well I represent the canine world as representative member on Blue Mountains Sports Council. As patron I see my role as supporting the club and its members in whatever capacities that I maybe required. As a member of sports council we look broadly at how to support sports in general across the mountains. It is positive the number and variety of sporting codes that exist in the Blue Mountains. Hundreds of people young and old enjoy participating in sports during the seasons. The problem that council has is trying to maintain quality ovals which are insufficient for the growing demand. Council is supportive of Dog training, although it doesn’t compare when you see what other council’s provide the ‘dog world’. They are supportive because one can imagine the consequence of not having responsible dog owners. One issue that is raised at meetings from time to time is that of irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to defecate in parks and ovals. Of course this provides me the opportunity on council to be the strong advocate for well organised community based dog training in the mountains. It is responsible dog owners the club clearly wants to encourage, along with owners who can enjoy their pets and importantly care for and handle their pets in a safe manner. The volunteers who have become the core of training instructors at Springwood need to be praised for the dedication to support the notion of responsible dog owners. Over the years there has been a number of instructors, I believe that the club has reached one of its high moments. The team has been responsible for changing the course to attract new members with a formula for trainees to enjoy and apply their new skills. The club also continues to welcome members who enjoy the world of canine competition, whether in the area of obedience or agility. At the same time the club acknowledges that not all participants want competition but enjoy what the club offers. We need to thank the instructors new and old to the club and the foundation members who provide their time for training and of course the many members who take part in events such as Australia Day, ANZAC and Springwood Foundation Day. It is on these occasions that the wider community can see what belonging to the club offers. As well, there are members who support the club in other roles necessary to maintain the clubs functions. It gives me great pleasure to be the clubs Patron, a position that I have now held for 9 years. One issue that is raised at meetings from time to time is that of

irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to defecate in parks and ovals. Of course this provides me the opportunity on council to be the strong advocate for well organised community based dog training in the mountains. It is responsible dog owners the club clearly wants to encourage, along with owners who can enjoy their pets and importantly

care for and handle their pets in a safe manner.

As many of you know, we have a small shop (table) and sell many items at low prices to our members. Things like leads, collars, halti’s and treats as well as pigs ears.

To the new members my name is Ella Sweeney; both I and Lyn Forwood run the shop. If the table is not set up just ask your instructor or Wally at the sign in table.

I might not be there very often for a wee while as I have had a shoulder replacement and tendon fixed and will have my left arm in a sling for a while but just ask if you want anything?

The Basset Hound is among the most good-natured and easygoing of breeds. He is amiable with dogs, other pets and children, although children must be cautioned not to put strain on his back with their games. He is calm inside,

but needs regular exercise to keep fit. He prefers to investigate slowly, and loves to sniff and trail. He is a talented and determined tracker, not easily dissuaded from his course. Because of this, he may get on a trail and follow it until he becomes lost. He tends to be stubborn and slow-moving. He has a loud bay that he uses when excited on the trail.

Basset hoUnD DoG careThe Basset needs mild daily exercise, which can be satisfied by walking on leash or playing in the yard. He does best as a house dog with access to a yard. His coat needs only minimal grooming, but his face may need regular cleaning around the mouth and wrinkles. Bassets tend to drool.

Basset hoUnD DoG healthMajor concerns: foreleg lameness, OCD, entropion, ectropion, otitis externa, intervertebral disc disease, glaucoma, vWD, CTP, gastric torsion Minor concerns: foot cysts and infection Occasionally seen: patellar luxationSuggested tests: eye, blood Life span: 8-12 yearsNote: Obesity is a problem in the breed, especially because it contributes to intervertebral disk disease

The Mystery MuttClicker training is a relatively new concept in dog training, although it has been used

for many years to teach dolphins and horses with a great deal of success.

The clicker, also known as an event marker, signifies that the dog has carried out the event, ie, if the dog is asked to sit, and it sits click and treat, there should be no delay between the click and treat otherwise the dog is being rewarded for sitting and not actually doing the sitting.

The advantages of using a clicker are that it signals the dog that it has done the correct thing for example sit, stand or drop etc. The other advantage of the click as opposed to using your voice is that it is a static sound whereas the voice can change especially when you are showing frustration which happens to us all.

To start clicker training scatter some small treats around on the ground about ½ a metre apart as the dog picks up each treat click the clicker once, this teaches the dog that when he hears the click he will get a reward, once the dog has the idea (which can take a few days to a week) then use the clicker for your basic training of any exercise. It is very important to reward the dog immediately after the click, if you click accidently and your dog has not earned it still give the dog the reward as it associates that click with a reward.

Any members who wish a demonstration on or to obtain a clicker can see me at training on a Thursday night. We are aways glad to see people showing an interest in training.

Feeding of this little dog is relatively easy, however care must be taken that they do not become overweight.

The breed is a lively, active little dog. They can be stubborn and wilful and do need a firm hand when training. They do get on well with children and other household pets if they are introduced at an early age. The dog makes an ideal family pet and watchdog. They are quite vocal and will be quick to alert the family of any strangers approaching theirterritory.Thisbreedisthemostpopularofthethreesizebreeds, italsoissaidtohavethe best temperament.

The breed is an intelligent dog that is easily trained and likes to please, although it does not enjoy repetitive training for its own sake. The breed is contented and not destructive when left alone.

The coat of the this breed is harsh, wiry and short with a dense undercoat. All over grooming is required at least twice a week. Hand stripping is a must for the show ring but clipping is straightforward and easy for the smart family pet although the body colour does pale over the years.

I might not be there very often for a wee while as I have had a shoulder replacement and tendon fixed and will have my left arm in a sling for a while but just ask if you want anything?

• They have a big meaty taste that dogs can’t resist.• Our locally produced treats contain 50% Australian meat and use human quality natural ingredients. • Provide nutritional balance suited for Dogs, including 25% protein

David Brown. Patron of Springwood Dog Training, Representative on Sports Council

It gives me great pleasure to be the clubs Patron, a position that I have now held for 9 years.
