Close Qualifying Sees Imperatori Take Pole for Season-Opener

Shanghai. PICC Team StarChase driver Alexandre Imperatori got his season un-derway in impressive form by grabbing pole position after a close qualifying session for the opening round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season at the 2012 FORMULA 1 UBS CHI-NESE GRAND PRIX today, which saw the top five separated by less than a second.

The Shanghai-based Swiss ace clocked a scorch-ing 2:08.965 lap early in the 30-minute session on the 5.5km Shanghai International Circuit. Martin Ragginger of Austria, making his series debut with new China Porsche dealer Team Eagle-Jiejun & Junbaojie, was the closest challenger for first pole of the year and, de-spite it being his first outing on the Shanghai track, he was just 0.368 seconds off Imperatori by the end of the session.

Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau was third quickest in the session, jumping up the order in the closing minutes on

new rubber, while reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Keita Sawa of LKM Racing will line up alongside him on the second row.

Two more newcomers, Allan Simonsen of Denmark in the Team Carrera Cup Asia car, and Benjamin Rouget of France with the new Team Yongda Dongfan make up the third row.

In the closely-contested Class B category for non-professional racers it was Anthony Liu of China who took pole, with newcomer Egidio Perfetti of Norway, in the Seminole Racing Team car, second fastest and Singaporean Yuey Tan with Dorr McElrea Racing third.

For Imperatori, it was the perfect start to the season: “It was good to put the lap in early so we could just react and not have to go back out and improve on it. I was lucky the lap was good enough for pole but a bit anx-ious at the end because the team kept me in.”

Ragginger, though a vastly-experienced Porsche driver, is nevertheless a newcomer to the deceptively challenging Shanghai track: “There were no big issues, but there are two parts of the circuit which are quite different to other race tracks. I could have done with a few more laps! It’s OK for my first qualify-ing, and I knew before I came that it would be close. It’s going to be good competition all season.”

For Avila, the gamble of pitting during the session to make set-up adjustments paid off:

PICC Team Starchase driver Alexandre Imperatori grabbed pole position in the qualifying session in Shanghai.

Qualifying :

“It was not a perfect start on our first set of tyres, and the set up was also not optimal. I did two laps to see what we could get out of the car, but then I decided to come in. We changed the set-up and the changes worked quite well, and fixed the problem which was affecting us in the third sector and put in a quicker time.

A newcomer to both sportscar and Porsche racing, former Formula 1 re-serve driver Tung Ho-Pin of China, was still finding his feet during the session and will start his debut race from the fourth row.

Racing with the second Team Star Chase entry backed by new series partner Budweiser, Tung was making no excuses despite having a mountain to climb this weekend: “I struggled in the first sector, so need tocheck the data and see why. We were quick in testing so the session wasn’t satisfactory in comparison.” continued on page 3

continued from page 1 As it strengthens its posi-

tion as the premier international sportscar championship in Asia, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia continues to attract both exciting new talent as well as increasing commercial support, with Budweiser joining as a new partner from 2012.

Qualifying and Round 1 of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be held on Saturday, April 14. Round 2, where the top eight finishers in the first race will be reversed on the grid, will be held on Sunday prior to the 2012 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX.

With a record grid and the best line-up of drivers ever as-sembled for a regional cham-pionship, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia begins its 10th sea-son is spectacular fashion.

Imperatori Opens Season with Impressive Victory

Shanghai. PICC Team StarChase star Alexandre Imperatori converted his pole position into an emphatic win in the opening round of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season today. By the chequered flag, the 24-year-old Swiss driver had managed to build an impressive gap of 7.754 seconds from runner-up Martin Ragginger of Team Eagle- Jiejun & Junbaojie. Third across the line after 12 laps was Allan Simonsen in the Team Carrera Cup Asia car.

In Class B, Anthony Liu of China took the season’s first win for BBT, while Egidio Perfetti continuing his impressive debut with a podium in his first outing with the series, despite a spin four turns from the flag. Wayne Shen finished third for Modena Motorsports.

However, it will be all change for Round 2 tomorrow, with the top eight finishers reversed on the grid. The new rule will see Budweiser Team StarChase driver Tung Ho-Pin on pole, with Liu alongside. Imperatori and Ragginger will make up the fourth row.

Imperatori’s opening victory gave his team a crucial confidence boost ahead of what he believes will be a tough season, but warned he expects his trouble-free run to the flag to be the exception rather than the rule: “I didn’t get a great start, but it was enough to stay in front. I focused on being quick right from the start and building up a gap. This is a great boost for the team, particularly as it’s a whole new ball game this season. However, this is by no means a sign of what is to come, and we just don’t know

what to expect tomorrow with the reverse grid.”

Rival Ragginger, was full of praise for Imperatori as he continues to look for the right balance in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car on a track which is new to him. Simonsen was pleased with his getaway, which saw him gain two places off the start: “I knew I had to get past at the beginning. The race was really tough, but fair and square, and I’m happy to be on the podium.”

As a non-series registered driver, Simonsen is ineligible to score points, meaning Ragginger lies three points behind Imperatori going in to Round 2, with Sawa in third.

Said Perfetti of his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut: “It took me a while to get past Ringo Chong, and a while to get into a groove, but I felt the last four or five laps were pretty good. On the last lap, I didn’t really know it was the final lap and I had been getting closer to Tung, and thought I might try a move on him. I got a bit too excited, but luckily I had built enough of a cushion to recover. ”

As the lights went out for the start of the 10th Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season, running as part of the 2012 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX this weekend, Imperatori got away well to lead the largest and most competitive field in the series’ history. However, Simonsen was away like lightning from the third row, diving outside Sawa, then into the inside of Avila to go third.

The opening lap was drama-filled with Sawa diving past Avila to go fourth, and John Shen running in to Team C&D lady driver Rose Tan. Meanwhile, a fierce, race-long battle was ensuing between reigning Class B champion, Wang Jian Wei of Team Betterlife, impressive

newcomer Huang Chu Han who, before Friday had never driven the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, and Zhang Da Sheng of Team Basetex. The Chinese trio had the crowds on their feet as they fought for position lap after lap.

Huang spun out on lap 10, but it was nevertheless and impressive debut.

Back at the front of the pack, Sawa claimed a place briefly from Simonsen and, as the Dane charged back to reclaim third, Avila seized the momentum to get by the Japanese driver. With Simonsen determined to hold on to the final podium place, the three were nose-to-tail.

Behind the leaders, Liu got by Budweiser Team StarChase driver Tung Ho-pin to go seventh overall behind Team Yongda Dongfang driver Benjamin Rouget of France.

Lap six saw Avila make a move on Simonsen, the Dane once again reclaiming his position, and a lap later a move by Sawa saw the Macau driver demoted to fifth.

The Class B action when all the way to the flag with Wayne Shen challenging Francis Tjia for the final podium place in the closing stages. His place was assured when Tjia spun, rejoining further down the order and crossing the line fourth in the category for OpenRoad Racing.

Tomorrow will see the new reverse grid in practice for the first time in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia history, and a chance for Tung to gain some valuable points.

Imperatori Scores Second Straight Victory in Round 2 Thriller

Shanghai. PICC Team StarChase driver Alexandre Im-peratori expertly raced his way to a second-straight victory in a drama-filled Round 2 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, held in support of today’s FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX. The thrilling race saw 2011 champion Keita Sawa with LKM Racing finish second, ahead of Imperatori’s team mate Tung Ho-Pin with Budweiser Team StarChase.

The race – where the top eight finishers from Round 1 started in a reverse order – saw Tung on pole, with Class B driver Anthony Liu of China alongside. Round 1 winner, Imperatori, started from eighth on the grid.

Series newcomer Egidio Per-fetti with Seminole Racing Team took his maiden Class B Por-sche Carrera Cup Asia victory in

just his second outing. Second was Liu, who had brilliantly held on to second for the open-ing laps, before a nail-biting battle with Perfetti for the Class B Win. Third in the category for non-professional racers was China’s Huang Chu Han in just his second career Porsche Carrera Cup Asia race.

Having completed a perfect weekend with pole position and wins in both Rounds 1&2, the Shanghai-based Swiss Imperatori now leads the championship from Sawa by seven points. Tung is a further nine points adrift. In

Class B, Liu leads Perfetti by just one point in what is already shaping up to be an exciting championship title race.

After his uninterrupted run from lights-to-flag in Round 1, Imperatori had to fight for his second consecutive win, but victory in arguably the most electri-fying race in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia history tasted all the more sweet:

“Today was very difficult. I had to be aggressive because I had to overcontinued on page 7

goal. I had a very long fight with Martin (Ragginger). I have to say in the end, it was fair - aggres-sive, but very fair. Ithink we gave everyone a good show today!”

Sawa, meanwhile, was aim-ing to achieve his pre-race tar-get of reaching the podium, but getting there was no easy task: “In the beginning, Avila was fighting with me too much, so I needed to wait and keep my position. After five laps, I tried to push more and, as my tyres were still working well, I pushed and pushed until I was in P1. But at that point everyone was push-ing me – three cars pushing me to go out!”

Series newcomer Tung was pleased to be on the podium in just his first weekend of Porsche racing, saying: “I think today was a big step forward compared to yesterday, especially in terms of pace. The progress makes me

Alexandre Imperatori takes the chequered flag, seizing his second win in a row.

quite happy and hopefully we can carry it for-ward in the next race.”

Class B winner Perfetti spent much of the race battling with Liu. “I tried to pass him three or four times. We were fighting quite a bit, but when he went wide at Turn 1 [on Lap 8]. I managed to go on the inside and over-take him. The win is fantastic! I didn’t really expect it and I hope to keep it up.”

Tung got away well from pole, and set about building up a margin from the chasing pack, admitting afterwards that he may have pushed a little too hard at the start. The open-ing lap saw a close fight for positions, with Allan Simonsen in the Team Carrera Cup Asia attempting to pass Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila. The move saw the pair come together, ending Simonsen’s race and damaging the Macau driver’s car.

As the car thundered across the start fin-ish line at the end of the opening lap, Tung led the pack from Liu, Sawa, Avila, who was right on the tail of the reigning champion, Team Ea-gle – Jiejun & Junbaojie driver Martin Raggin-ger of Austria, Imperatori and Perfetti.

As Tung pulled out in front, Liu came un-der fierce pressure, eventually running wide. Meanwhile, Imperatori was desperately look-ing to find a way past Ragginger, and Avila try-

ing to get by Sawa on lap 5. While the four may have been engaged in a high-speed fight for position, none had lost sight of the main prize, and by mid-way through the 12-lap race, Tung’s margin was diminished and Sawa loomed large in his mirrors.

Making his move to take the lead on Lap 8, Sawa got by Tung, with Avila attempting to follow. Sawa and Avila came together, and it was game over for the Macau driver. Sawa then ran wide, handing the lead back to Tung, and allowing Imperatori and Ragginger through.

However, Tung’s lead was short-lived as Imperatori dived past the fol-lowing lap to seize the lead. The ensu-ing battle between Ragginger and Tung allowed Sawa the chance to move up to second, and ended with the Austrian picking up a puncture and eventually crossing the line 15th. Sawa held on to second ahead of Tung, who led from Perfetti.

Behind the top four, the battle was far from over with Team Yongda Dong-fan driver Benjamin Rouget of Francecontinued on page 8

Overall Standings after Round 2 Catch Porsche Speed Show(极速保时捷極極極極極極極極), the new on-line show exclusively about the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

Episode 1 premieres April 25 at www.carreracupasia.com!

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia quote of the weekend:

“Today was very difficult. I had to be aggressive because I had to over-take seven guys to reach my goal. I had a very long fight with Martin (Ragginger). I have to say in the end, it was fair - aggressive, but very fair. I think we gave everyone a good show today!”
