Championship leader takes maiden series pole in Ordos

Ordos. Porsche Carrera Cup Asia championship points leader, Earl Bamber of Nexus Racing, took his maiden series pole position today at the 3.751km Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia after a close-run qualifying session. Just 0.115 seconds behind him though was Team Eagle’s Martin Ragginger, snapping at the heels of the talented New Zealand sportscar newcomer. Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila set a scorching first quick lap which put him third in the time sheets, but his session ended prematurely with a broken engine belt.

The top four drivers were separated by less than a second, with reigning champion, Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase, also under the one minute 46 second mark.

With the second fastest times setting the grid for Round 7, Bamber will again be on pole with Ragginger lining up alongside. On the second row of the grid for race two will be Imperatori, still working to find the glitch which has plagued the successful team so far this

season, next to Team Carrera Cup Asia VIP driver and two-time former champion Darryl O’Young, racing for Porsche Centre Ordos this weekend.

It was a successful session for the Class B points leader too, with Team Mentos’ Egidio Perfetti putting together the perfect lap to grab pole position for both races and setting an impressive 11th fastest time overall amongst the 25-strong field. Second fastest in the category was series newcomer and Bamber’s Nexus Racing team mate, Alif Hamdan of Malaysia. Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan of Singapore was third fastest in the class.

The Ordos track has earned a reputation for demanding the utmost respect from the drivers who take it on, and Bamber was thrilled to have taken his first Porsche Carrera Cup Asia pole here: “The team’s been working really hard, and they chose a great strategy. Everything is coming together and our strategy of being in the top three all the time is working

Qualifying :

so far. Ordos is an interesting track and there’s lots of sliding around. You have to be very precise, and we were lucky in qualifying that we got a good run with no dust. Martin [Ragginger] was right on my tail, and Rodolfo [Avila] was unlucky.”

Unlike many of the drivers, Bamber believes there are good overtaking opportunities on the challenging track: “It’s really good for overtaking, and I think there’ll be passing in the races, you just have to be careful. It’s tough on tyres, so tyre management is going to be a factor,” he added.

Ragginger was philosophical about missing out on pole this time after his impressive run of qualifying sessions: “This is the first time this year being second on the grid, and I expected a bit more after being on pole here last year. continued on page 3

continued from page 1and a pair of pole positions is Egidio Perfetti of Mentos Racing with an impressive 36-point lead. However, behind him the competitive is close, with Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan of Singapore holding a one-point lead over Asia Racing Team’s Li Chao of China, and Hong Kong rivals John Shen of Modena Motorsports and OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia tied in fourth.

At the wheel of the Team Carrera Cup Asia Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will be two-time former champion and current FIA World Touring Car Championship driver, Darryl O’Young. As a mark of respect, O’Young has agreed to take the seat of Denmark’s Allan Simonsen, who was originally entered to make a welcome return to the series but tragically lost his life in an accident at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The entire Porsche Carrera Cup Asia organisation, teams and drivers is deeply saddened by the loss of the popular and talented driver, who competed with the series several times.

Team Eagle’s Martin Ragginger was the second quickest driver in Saturday’s Qualifying session.

The Ordos circuit, opened in 2010, has quickly earned the respect of Asia’s motorsport fraternity and is regarded as a true test of driver and car. The elevations, bumps and tricky corners test the reliability of the cars to the max, while the constantly changing track surface conditions demand absolute mental agility and lightning-fast reactions from the drivers. The combination has resulted in some dramatic upsets to the form book, meaning Rounds 6 and 7 are sure to produce some thrilling surprises.

For Avila, it was frustrating to see his qualifying session end prematurely after the team worked to give him a better car after Friday’s practice sessions: “It was a real shame as there was much, much more to come from the car. I believe we could have been in the top two, but that’s racing. We’ll bounce back and I’ve cleared my head and am looking ahead to the race. We’ll have better pace than we had the chance to show in qualifying.”

After feeling he was a little off the pace during practice, Perfetti was both pleased and relieved to have stormed to pole in Class B: “We made a few adjustments to the front end of the car, and we got a good lap when there was less traffic out there. On this track you have to be gentle with the car, gentle on the braking. You need to spend a bit of time and use some finesse.”

As the session got underway, it was Imperatori who topped the timing sheets initially, before being knocked off the top spot first by Avila and then Ragginger. However, Bamber thundered out on track, seizing pole position on his first quick lap and, try as he might, Ragginger could not better his time.

Team Basetex driver Zhang Da Sheng put in a strong performance, finishing seventh fastest after the session behind O’Young, while Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget of France will line up alongside him for the start of the first of two 14-lap races on China’s most unforgiving circuit – a true test of man and machine.

Brilliant Bamber conquers Ordos

Ordos. Nexus Racing’s Earl Bamber strengthened his lead in the chase for the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title today with a dominant victory on the challenging and unpredictable Ordos International Circuit. The New Zealander, who is making a storming debut in the region’s premier sportscar championship this season, maximized the advantage of his first series pole position, but had to fend off a determined Martin Ragginger for much of the race. The Team Eagle driver fought hard to catch the young pretender, but was unable to snatch victory from him.

Taking the final podium place was Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila who had managed to secure third on the grid after just one quick lap in qualifying before a technical problem ended his session prematurely. The Macau driver also came

under pressure for much of this race from Budweiser Kamlung Racing’s Tung Ho-Pin of China, who eventually crossed the line in fourth.

Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Alex Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase lost a position to Tung at the start, and was not able to regain any ground over the race, which was shortened to 12 laps after a delay while a drain cover was re-welded in the interests of safety.

FIA World Touring Car Championship regular Darryl O’Young, in the VIP car for Porsche Centre Ordos this weekend, crossed the line in sixth, having fended off a hard-charging Benjamin Rouget of Team Yongda Dongfang for much of the race, while Team Basetex’ Zhang Da Sheng of China was eighth.

Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti also strengthened his impressive lead in the Class B standings with his fifth victory in six races. Asia Racing Team’s Li Chao drove a spectacular race to finish second in the class, with OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia in third after benefiting from spins by Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan and Nexus Racing’s Alif Hamdan.

After three consecutive wins, Bamber now has a seven point lead from Ragginger,

Round 6 :

with Avila a further 12 points behind the leader. Keita Sawa, 10th in Round 6, is fourth, followed by Rouget and Tung. Perfetti meanwhile has a comfortable 40 point advantage over Li, who jumps to second ahead of Tan in third.

A delighted Bamber was, as always, full of praise for his team and was keen to get out on track again to continue what is shaping up to be an intense and fascinating battle with Ragginger: “I didn’t get the best start, and Martin [Ragginger] was really fast at the beginning of the race. We had a ferocious fight at the beginning, but I managed to hold him off. I had to manage my tyres, and with the dust and everything, it felt more like rallying at times! I’m really stoked though. Bring on tomorrow!”

Like Ragginger, Avila was less than satisfied with his result. Said Avila: “The pace was not as I had expected, and to be honest my head wasn’t there. I saw [Tung] Ho-Pin coming up, but the guys in front were just in another world. continued on page 6

continued from page 5They’re ahead of me in the championship, so it’s obviously not great, but our hopes are still very much alive.”

For Li Chao, who also won the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia medal for the race for his achievements in climbing through the field, it was exciting to be on the podium in his home country: “As a Chinese driver, I’m very happy to be on the podium here in Ordos. I got a good start, and after one lap I was third in the class. After the others spun, I was up to P2.”

Off the grid, Bamber held his pole position advantage with rival Ragginger in hot pursuit and Avila in third. Meanwhile, Tung dived past Imperatori and began the charge to the Macau driver ahead. In Class B, Tan spun early on but managed to rejoin the race, crossing the line in 19th. Alif Hamdan had been running strongly behind Perfetti, but spun on lap 4 and later retired.

Tyre wear was an inevitable feature on the tight twists and rugged surface of the Inner Mongolian track, and guest driver and newcomer George Chou had to start from the back of the grid having had to put two new tyres on his car.

Bamber, who also set the fastest lap in Round 6, is on pole position for Round 7 with Ragginger again alongside, and Imperatori and O’Young making up the second row, and Avila and Tung behind.

While Bamber and Perfetti may be keen to continue the chase for the title, the unforgiving Ordos track is notorious for upsetting the form book. As is always true in motorsport, anything can happen when the 25-strong field of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing cars line up for the start of Round 7.

Page 7: Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Rounds 6&7 Report

Ordos. Nexus Racing’s Earl Bamber continued his assault on the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title, taking his fourth successive series victory, and strengthening his position at the top of the leaderboard. Resisting another formidable challenge from Team Eagle’s Martin Ragginger, Bamber led from pole to chequered flag on Inner Mongolia’s unforgiving 3.751km Ordos International Circuit to take victory in Round 7. Despite a spirited challenge, Ragginger had to settle for the runner-up spot for the second time this weekend.

Reigning champion Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase made a return to the podium in third, ahead of Team C&D’s Zhang Zhiqiang who drove a storming race from the fifth row of the grid and spectacularly overtook Darryl O’Young, racing in the VIP car for Porsche Centre Ordos this weekend, on the final lap.

In Class B, another superb run to the flag from Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti took his winning streak to six victories in seven races. Asia

Racing Team’s Li Chao also completed a perfect weekend with another podium finish and winning the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia medal for the second time in Ordos, while Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan recovered brilliantly from a setback off the start to take third.

Bamber has a nine point advantage over Ragginger after seven races, with Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila in third ahead of LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa. In Class B, Perfetti’s has a 42 point lead from Li Chao who is seven points ahead of Tan.

Having found a good setup in Zhuhai in May, Nexus Racing didn’t change Bamber’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup ahead of the weekend, a decision which proved to be a winner. Despite leading the championship, Bamber is well aware the title is far from won: “It’s going to be like this all season, a tenth of a second, a few thousandths between us. We’re still learning and need some more experience, but it’s crucial we make no mistakes. The plan was to be in the top three, so frankly we’re surprising ourselves a little.”

A disappointed Ragginger, meanwhile, believed his woes began earlier in the weekend and, unlike Earl, he started the race on used tyres: “The car was good. The problem for us was qualifying. In the beginning I knew Earl would be quicker on new tyres, but knew that if I kept my pace I’d be able to push him. There was a bit of contact and I pushed hard, but in the end he

got the win.”While Imperatori was pleased

to have found some more pace, he admitted the team had a way to go to catch the leaders: “I was hoping to use the new tyres to make some headway. Earl was on new tyres, but Martin was really quick on old ones. I tried at the start to go around the outside, but missed it. [Being on the podium] is a positive step from yesterday, but it’s still not enough.”

For Tan, who made contact with Li Chao in Round 6, damaging his car, a podium finish this time out was a good end to the weekend. He had his work cut out though, and had to get right on the power to gain the places he lost at the start: “There was a lot going on off the start, and I almost came to a stop. I had to wait to see how to get back in the race as cars were flying past me. You don’t want to hit your mates. We didn’t get hit, and that’s great!”

As the lights went out for the start of the 14-lap race, the drama began from the off with a hard-charging Budweiser Kamlung Racing Tung Ho-Pin making contact with Team Jebsen’s Avila, the Macau driver spinning amongst the tightly-packed field and dropping down the order.continued on page 8

continued from page 7Avila fought back, picking his way back up through the field to finish eighth.

Behind them, Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget tangled with Basetex Racing’s Zhang Da Sheng, the Chinese driver sustaining damage and having to pit. Zhang rejoined the race, but limped over the line with a damaged car.

Lap two saw Zhang Zhiqiang challenging Rouget for fifth, while behind the pair, Tung had closed right up to LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa. Two laps later, the battling Zhang Zhiqiang and Rouget came together, the former continuing following the incident to eventually finish fourth, while the Frenchman dropped back, crossing the line in 13th. Tung briefly managed to find a way past Sawa on lap 5, but the Japanese ace quickly reclaimed the position and try as he might, Tung had to settle for seventh at the flag.

Back at the front, Ragginger managed to close right up to Bamber, reducing the margin to less than four tenths of a second at the end of lap 10, the Austrian piling on the pressure, lights flashing. The New Zealander was not rattled though, and held firm to cross the line 1.668 seconds ahead.

The region’s premier sportscar championship now heads to South Korea and Asia’s newest racetrack for Rounds 8 and 9 at the Autopia International Circuit at Inje in August. The 4.207km track opened earlier this year and will provide the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia field with a whole new set of challenges. Championship leader Bamber is relishing the prospect of a level playing field: “It’ll be new for everyone, so as newcomers to the series, we won’t be at any disadvantage. I can’t wait to get there!”

- Earl Bamber
