Imperatori Clinches Championship for PICC Team StarChaseShanghai. Alexandre Impera-tori won the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion-ship today at the aptly-named Sports Car Champions Festival. With six victories in nine races, the 25-year-old PICC Team StarChase ace clinched the title after rival and defending cham-pion LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa failed to take pole posi-tion for the penultimate race of the season. Even if Sawa takes maximum points in Rounds 10 and 11, he can only hope to draw level in the points, and Im-peratori would ace him by virtue of race wins.

After Friday’s wet free prac-tice sessions at the 4.603km Shanghai International Cir-cuit, conditions were wet but changeable at the start of the 30-minute qualifying session. At a weekend which is all about tyre strategy, most of the field initially elected to go out on wets, with some teams taking their chances on slicks later on in the session.

It was Team Jebsen’s Rodol-fo Avila who mastered the tricky

conditions, snatching his first pole position of the season in the closing minutes of the ses-sion from Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie driver Martin Ragginger of Austria. Raggin-ger had earlier taken provisional pole position from early leader Budweiser Team StarChase driver Tung Ho-Pin of China.

Lining up on the second row of the grid will be Team Yongda Dongfang racer Benjamin Rouget of France, alongside Tung.

Taking his maiden Class B pole position was a delighted Li Chao of Asia Racing Team, after a superb qualifying performance. Sec-ond quickest was series newcomer, excit-ing young talent 17-year-old Shaun Thong of Hong Kong racing a Porsche for the first time with PS Racing. However, the battle for the Class B championship is between current points leader Wayne Shen of Modena Motor-sports, who qualified fourth in the category, and Seminole Racing Team’s Egidio Perfetti, third in the session.

Despite being the tenth Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion, man of the moment Im-peratori was still entirely focused on winning but will have his work cut out, having qualified in sixth: “We knew heading out there that if Sawa didn’t get pole position, the champion-ship was ours but I was not really thinking about it and I’m still not thinking about it. It’s good to know it is safe and secure but now the focus is on the race today and so far it has

Qualifying :

not been going well. The conditions have been changing and they look like they might change again. It’s the same for everybody but so far we have not found the sweet spot for the car. This afternoon it will be about maximum attack, and it will be the same tomor-row. We are determined to finish the season here with good results. So as far as winning the championship goes, the celebrations will have to wait until tomorrow.”

With the overall championship wrapped up, victory in one of the final two rounds of the season will be the most prized achievement, with every one of the 28-car field going all out for glory. Avila knows his start will be cru-cial: “It felt good out there. I managed to post a good lap at the beginning but I knew it wouldn’t be good enough so I went out again and really pushedhard. It was not a perfect lap for me, but it was good enough for pole. Now comes the big test and that is to win this after-noon. We need to make a good start which we haven’t been doing. But I have a feeling that today things are go-ing to go my way. I’m really looking for-ward to it and a win would be a great way for us to finish the season.”continued on page 3

continued from page 1The stellar career of British-

born Australian David Brabham began in 1983 in karts, with a British Formula 3 Championship title and victory at the Macau Grand Prix following in 1989. Twenty-four Formula 1 race starts were followed by the beginning of his current successful sportscar

career, with an All-Japan GT Championship title in 1996. He is a two-time American Le Mans Se-ries champion (in the P1 and LMP Classes), and is one of only four Australians to have won the Le Mans 24 Hours, winning the blue riband race outright in 2009, and two more class wins so far in 2007 and 2008.

The Shanghai Sportscar Champions Festival will mark a decade of racing for the Porsche Car-rera Cup Asia. Having burst onto the Asian mo-

torsport scene at the start of 2003, the series immediately set a new benchmark of excellence in the region. The inclusion of Brabham amongst the most talented and experienced field of sportscar rac-ers ever assembled in Asia, guarantees a season-closer like no other.

Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen grabbed his first pole position in Round 10 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

pole, Ragginger was not disap-pointed although like several drivers would have liked a few more laps after switching to slicks: “We’ve started all races on the front row, so that’s not too bad!” he said.

Rouget echoed what many of the field was experiencing: “It wasn’t easy for me out there. I had only one set of front tyres as I used one yesterday in prac-tice. It was really slippery and the track was really wet. It’s a good test for me and my car and it really puts you under a lit-tle bit more pressure as a driv-er, which is what I enjoy. I like to be tested and we have put ourselves in a good position for this afternoon.”

Li Chao will start Round 10 from Class B pole for the first time, and is brimming with con-fidence after the session: “Af-ter this, I like the rain a lot!” For Shen and Perfetti though, there is the matter of a championship to decide.

Team Carrera Cup Asia VIP driver David Brabham is predict-ing an interesting race ahead after qualifying 17th. Driving the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for the first time this weekend, Brabham began the session on used wets in order to bed in the brakes, before switching to a new set for a lap: “I missed the window, so took a gamble on slicks, I could have done with two more laps, but I’m looking forward to an entertaining race from midfield!”

Li Chao from Asia Racing Team was the fastest Class B driver in Round 10 Qualifying

Pole-sitter Rodolfo Avila (Left) and winner of round 10 Martin Ragginger (Right) do battle

Ragginger Victorious in Shanghai ThrillerShanghai. Austrian Martin Ragginger gave his Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie plenty to cheer about after he took victory in the penultimate round of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season today. Notching up his second win of the season, Ragginger crossed the line 1.595 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen. Third across the line after the 12-lap thriller was Budweiser Team StarChase talent Tung Ho-Pin of China taking his third podium on his debut sportscar season.

With Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase, fourth in the race, having guaranteed the title after qualifying, the remainder of the field had their sights set firmly on the podium.

Winner in Class B was Seminole Racing Team’s Egidio Perfetti, closing in on title rival Wayne Shen of Modena Motorsports who was involved in a late-stage incident, eventually finishing 15th. The race for the Class B championship will now go right down to the wire in Sunday’s finale, with just

eighteen points separating the pair. Second Class B finisher was OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia, with Asia Racing Team’s Huang Chu Han of China, third.

Said Ragginger: “I had to make many moves during the race because I had a bad start. The first was against Keita Sawa in turn one. I made my move on the inside over the curb and I got him there. Then, after the restart, Rodolfo was looking on the inside so I went to the right then before braking I went completely left and I had him. It was quicker than this morning in fact it had dried out about 10 minutes after qualifying. The safety car didn’t help me so much because I had a gap lead behind me and then two laps later I had less. I knew then I had to go out and pass Rodolfo quickly and luckily enough it all worked out. I was confident coming in. I knew I was quick and needed a good start to get past him but I messed that up completely. But I was able to pull it all together. I think today was a practice for tomorrow.”

Despite missing out on the win, Avila was still pleased to have taken a podium finish: “I had a good start. The first lap was ok but I had a little bit of late braking in the hair pin. I went a bit wide but still managed to keep the lead. I thought that if I managed my race, managed my tyres, I could win. After the Safety Car came in I lost a bit but I could see Martin had more pace than me. When I exited turn eight, I went a bit wide and drove over the grass

and the car started wheel spinning and not going anywhere. Martin was able to catch up quite a lot. When I saw him coming to my left I realized I couldn’t block him and basically that was it. I was right behind trying to manage the gap and that was basically it. Everyone did a good job.”

Tung meanwhile was already looking ahead to tomorrow’s finale: “Since Malaysia I have been improving and so has the car. Malaysia and Singapore I probably should have made the podium so I am happy with the way things are going.”

For Perfetti, it was an eventful outing: “It was an interesting race! I thought it was all over at the beginning. One car almost took us out on turn one and I fell back. There was a lot of adrenaline and a bit of frustration but I think that was what kept me going. I put my head down and kept concentrating and took it one move at a time as I worked my way through the traffic. It was a very good race in the end. The final bonus was when I saw Wayne [Shen] try to take me and spin. So that leaves me in a good position for tomorrow, and it should be a big day.”

continued from page 4Avila made a brilliant

getaway from pole, and set about building up a gap from the hard-charging Benjamin Rouget after a less-than-perfect getaway by Ragginger put him down the order. An opening-lap incident behind the race leaders saw several cars spinning out, but all rejoined.

Tung and LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa gave chase, but Ragginger was on fire, charging past Sawa, Tung and Rouget and up to second. Race leader Avila was beginning to see his advantage whittled away by the Austrian, reduced to just over half a second when the Safety Car was called out on lap 7 after OpenRoad by ART Motorsports’ Marcel Tjia spun and came to a halt in the gravel trap.

At the restart, Avila again made a good getaway, but both Ragginger and Tung were straight on his tail, while behind the trio Sawa was holding Imperatori at bay. Ragginger made his move on Avila to grab the lead on the following lap with a wheel-perfect pass and headed towards the flag.

In the closing laps of the race, Sawa continued to thwart Imperatori’s increasingly-desperate attempts to get by until, in a dramatic final lap, the Swiss driver dived passed on the final run to the flag.

New Champion Ends Season with Victory while Shen Takes Class B TitleShanghai. PICC Team StarChase talent and newly crowned Por-sche Carrera Cup Asia cham-pion Alexandre Imperatori fin-ished his season in spectacular style by taking a resounding victory in the final round. The Shanghai-based Swiss driver crossed the line after the 12-lap Round 11 with a margin of 6.5 seconds from second-place fin-isher Keita Sawa of LKM Racing Team. Third over the line in the action-packed and Safety Car-interrupted race was Chinese driver Zhang Da Sheng of Team Basetex, who drove a superb race to take his second podium of the season.

Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen clinched the Class B title, finishing the season 26 points clear of on-track rival Francis Tjia of OpenRoad Racing. An unlucky race saw series new-comer Egidio Perfetti, who had been in championship conten-tion coming to Shanghai, drop

down to third in the final standings.Chinese drivers impressed at the inaugural

Sports Car Champions Festival, with Huang Chu Han of Asia Racing Team winning Class B to take his second class victory of season. OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia was second, putting him second in the championship. Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan of Singapore was third across the line after a tough race.

In the final points, Imperatori clinched the title, 44 points ahead of Sawa, with Avila mov-ing up the leaderboard after the final race to third.

Said Imperatori: “We had the champion-ship in the bag yesterday morning so there was no need to be conservative any more. I just went all out on the attack because I really wanted to finish the season off with a victory. We didn’t have the smoothest weekend here. It was stuck in traffic all the way yesterday so today I really wanted to show everybody that I hadn’t lost my touch. I was really great to win this race for our sponsors PICC and the team. Everybody did a great job today.”

As 2011 champion Sawa handed his crown to Imperatori he was gracious in defeat: “I’d like to congratulate Alex on winning the cham-pionship. I tried to defend the championship

this year but I’ve had to settle for sec-ond. But it was good to get on the po-dium in the last race of the season. The race today was very hard work. After the Safety Car my tyre pressure was too high, so I wasn’t able to maintain the pace until the end. Now I will just have to come back next year and win back the championship.”

Thanking his Team Basetex, Zhang was overjoyed with his season finale: “This is my first season of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, and I plan to con-tinue to bring more glory to China, so please continue to support me!”

The reverse grid regulation for the top eight finishers in Round 10 saw BBT’s David Rizzo on pole with Zhang alongside, and Benjamin Rouget and Sawa making up the second row. As the lights went out for the last time this season, Rizzo roared off the grid. Both Tung Ho-Pin and Imperatori were on a charge from the third row, getting by Sawa and Zhang.

ly an incident further down the field saw Team C&D’s Rose Tan hit, catapulted across the field and into the barrier. Her station-ery car brought out the Safety Car, but simultaneously a pitch battle between Rouget and Rizzo ended with the pair in the gravel. As the Safety Car came out, it was Budweiser Team StarChase driver Tung who led the field from Imperatori, with Sawa and Team Jebsen’s Ro-dolfo Avila in fourth and fifth.

As the racing resumed on Lap 6, Tung initially got away well but his team mate was on the attack, eventually div-

ing past to grab the lead. Behind, Sawa and Avila where wheel-to-wheel across the track, with the Macau racer getting by but the pair making contact as the Japanese veteran re-claimed the position. Sawa then dived past Tung to go second at the half-way point.

Winner of Round 10, Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie driver Martin Ragginger was on the move too, climbing up the order to fourth by the end of Lap 8, and getting by Avila on Lap 10 to go third.

As the field thundered towards the cheq-uered flag for the final time in its 10th season, Zhang was the star of the show, getting by Avila and into fourth. Ragginger was having a look at Sawa ahead, but there weren’t enough laps left to improve his position. After cross-ing the line though, his efforts came to naught as he was penalized by Race Stewards for overtaking under yellow flags. That promot-

ed Zhang to third, and a podium with which to celebrate his impressive de-but Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season.

Team Carrera Cup Asia driver David Brabham, making his debut in a Por-sche 911 GT3 Cup this weekend, put in a strong performance to finish fifth from 10th on the grid.

It was a dramatic end to the 11-round Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season. As the two champions relished their triumph over the most competitive sportscar field ever assembled in Asia, plans were already well underway for an even more impressive 2013 season when the series celebrates 10 years at the pinnacle of GT racing across Asia.

Final Class B Standings

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia quote of the weekend:

Behind the Scenes at the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia

“We had the championship in the bag yesterday morning so there was no need to be conservative any more. I just went all out on the attack because I really wanted to finish the season off with a victory. We didn’t have the smoothest weekend here. I was really great to win this race for our sponsors PICC and the team. Everybody did a great job today.”
