DescriptionA montage of several images

Programs/ToolsAdobe Photoshop

ObjectivesSeamlessly combine several images with no harsh edges. Include a spiritual quote or message in the design.

ProcessI started with an image that I took this summer in Stanley, Idaho. I copied the background layer and applied a filter, slight Gaussian blur. I also burned the edges a bit for a more aged look. I adjusted the levels, and then masked out the clouds to avoid losing detail with the adjusted brightness. I also increased the vibrancy slightly to make sure color wasn’t lost when the overlays were applied. I placed a map image over top the original photo and applied the “Divide” blending option with a slight decrease in opacity. I masked out several areas of the map image layer including the clouds, the fence, part of the bottom corner and part of the town. I used a very heavy brush on some parts, but a very light brush for most of the image to ensure very good blending. Finally, I placed the grungy background image on the project and used the “overlay” blend at a lower opacity. I lightly masked part of the middle part of the overlay to retain the details of the town.

ObjectivesSeamlessly combine several images with no harsh edges. Include a spiritual quote or message in the design.

ProcessI first created an original logo in Adobe Illustrator for an artist’s blog. I used the shape tool and then refined the shapes using the pen tool to come up with the splash element. Next, I set up the offset fold in Adobe InDesign by dividing the layout into two sections with the fold line off center so that the right edge of the inside of the brochure would show when the brochure was folded. I used the splash design element from the Obviously Milly logo to create repetition and flow.

I chose photos for the brochure that illustrate different kinds of art to strengthen the message of the brochure. In Photoshop I cut the background for the pencil can image, and then used the ‘text wrap’ option to wrap my text around the edges of the image.

ObjectivesThe objective was to create an enitrely original logo in Adobe Illustrator

ProcessThis logo was created entirely in Illustrator. I designed three different logos and then collected votes on which logo was most appealing. I worked to refine the most popular logo by simplifying the text to one font, using colors for contrast. I also moved the text up and to the left of the image to aid with flow, proximity and unity. I made the lines in the image larger so that the details would remain visible as the logo is scaled down in size. I placed another copy of the grungy background image and used the “Color Burn” blend at 41% opacity. I masked out all but the very top and the very bottom of the image. I used a very light brush on the edges to create a subtle blend. I added the text of the quote in varied sizes and colors for contrast and interest.

ObjectivesCreate an original logo and then create coordinated stationery and business cards

ProcessI started by creating the logo in Illustrator. My first step was to find a font that worked well with my design idea and with the fun, energetic personality of the company. I settled on a script font with a brushed feel to it. I created barbecue tools using simple paths and then using the pathfinder tool to cut shapes from the basic shapes for more detail. I pulled the logo into InDesign and placed it in the upper left corner of the page leaving a .5 inch margin. On the opposite top corner I typed the company information in the same font to coordinate with the small words in the logo. For contrast I made the owner’s title and the website red, and bolded the name of the owner. I repeated the tools from the logo on the bottom right corner of the stationery in a red color at a low opacity for repetition and unity.

I started by creating the logo in Illustrator. My first step was to find a font that worked well with my design idea and with the fun, energetic personality of the company. I settled on a script font with a brushed feel to it. I created barbecue tools using simple paths and then using the pathfinder tool to cut shapes from the basic shapes for more detail. Finally I created the business card. I designed both front and back, and repeated the elements from the stationery to strengthen the company’s branding. In my draft I designed the cards in landscape format, but after taking into account the critique sessions I changed the cards to portrait to improve the flow of the design. On the back side of the card instead of repeating the logo in white on the red background I repeated the tools watermark from the coordinating stationery.

ObjectivesDemonstrate photography, image editing and design skills. Use an original photo taken with this project in mind, and create a finished project that includes a pleasing color scheme.

ProcessI began by choosing to use a complementary color scheme from the Visual Focus online textbook. I wanted to keep the color scheme simple because it is winter, and simple color schemes are easier to find in my area this season. I took several photos I made adjustments in Adobe PhotoShop to enhance the color of the aged wood fence and the patina on the wind chime. The colors matched teal and brick from the color wheel beautifully. I brought the photo into an 8.5 x 11″ canvas and added stripes on the left side of the image to act as the color swatches. I labeled them with the color scheme and the colors. I also added a swirl design element in brick colors to enhance the design. I repeated the stripe design element on the right side of the image, as well as another swirl design. I added an overlay to the stripes for a bit of texture and depth. As a final element I added text to the right side of the design. I chose something that tied in with the beautiful winter image.

Programs/ToolsMicrosoft Word

ObjectivesProduce a full-bleed color ad for a benefit event using a scanner and Microsoft Word.

ProcessI scanned an image from the 2015 university Chancellor’s Report at 300 dpi so that I would have maximum flexibility in sizing and cropping the image. I tried several scanners, but ended up liking the quality of my HP Office Jet best. I used the shape tool in Microsoft Word to add a border strip and a title shape to the image using analogous colors on the color wheel (green, lime, yellow) to keep the look of the flier very harmonious. I used contrasting typefaces, a script font for the title and a sans serif for the body. The message of this flier is an invitation to participate in a fundraiser for the community garden. The greens in the flier work with the colors of the image, but also repeat the garden theme of the event.

Programs/ToolsNotepad ++

ObjectivesTo use HTML and CSS to create a webpage using good design principles and featuring a logo from a previous project

ProcessI created this web page using Notepad++. I have a little bit experience with HTML but almost none with CSS. I used the HTML validator at http://www.W3.org and was able to correct several problems with my code. In week 2 of the project I attached the assignment’s CSS document to my HTML. I adjusted it using the color scheme from my logo as the colors for my web page using the eyedropper tool. I used google fonts to find fonts that compliment the logo, Courgette and Source Sans Pro. I also included backup fonts as per the assignment instruction. I adjusted the padding in nearly every element to improve white space and alignment.

ObjectivesTo inform recent graduates about an event that will give them the tools to compete and succeed in the business world. The design is crisp, clean and unfussy to capture their attention, but still friendly and approachable.

ProcessThe logo, photograph and content for the flier were provided. I created sketches of some layout ideas and then chose one to create a draft layout in Adobe InDesign. I used various colored boxes, repeated on the page as a design element and to provide contrast and aid with visual hierarchy. I emphasized the word “Leadership” in the title of the event both for visual interest and because the word “graduate” can be read two ways and I wanted to avoid confusion over whether this is an event for people who have graduated, or an actual graduation event. I created a white space that flows across the page, and kept the body copy small which helped emphasize the important information on the event, but still made the description available to anyone interested in learning more.

Flier TwoDescriptionAn advertising flier for a local Scouting fundraiser event

Programs/ToolsAdobe InDesign

ObjectivesUse the tools in InDesign to create an eye-catching event flier for a Scouting fundraiser.

ProcessI started with an image that I took of pancakes topped with berries. I used the pen tool in indesign to make an interesting shape on one side of the photo. I made a red color block to the side of the photograph with a corresponding curved shape. Both the photo and the color block are full-bleed. I repeated the curve above the photo and then curved the text box to conform to the curved shape. I used a simple sans-serif font for the body copy, and a bold, hand-lettered script font for the title and the call to action.
