the intent of this project is to design a Las Vegas hotel and casino. Las Vegas casinos are always changing. That change results in wasting huge

sums of money due to themes that have limited life span appeal to the public. The design of the casino for this project should bridge the generations

and create long-term interest and viability. By using an existing building the construction cost will be minimized and the history of that structure will

remain intact. There are many reasons that the development of the city of Las Vegas has been able to generate interest over the years, with the

primary one being entertainment. Entertainment is viewed as a necessity in contemporary society and the public’s passion for entertainment and the

thrill of gambling keeps the interest fresh. The goal of this project is to provide an environment with classic features that relates to the history of Las

Vegas gaming while proving that an entertainment environment (i.e., casino) can be developed for both short term and long term fi scal responsibility.

The main gaming fl oor was designed so that there are very few straight lines. The fl oor plan makes you wonder through the space. The back blue wall is made of an opaque glass that divides the gaming fl oor from the high roller area. The main walls in the casino are made out of a gold-fl ecked cork. The rich color adds to a classic color palette. The gaming chairs and tables utilize consistent styles and fi nishes throughout.

The casino fl oor has three central bars on the gaming fl oor that are color coded for wayfi nding. The main bar in the center of the plan has a gold color scheme. The blue bar is located on the west portion of the plan and the red bar is located on the east portion of the plan. All bars are round to provide accessibility from all sides. The bars also act as serving stations for the gaming fl oor. The counter is made from semi precious stone that will be lit from below. The shelves in the middle are made of colored glass to match the light fi xtures of the bar.

Restaurant & Retail

This course introduced me to the space planning techniques, image development, merchandising, and physical and psychological considerations involved in designing restaurants and retail spaces. I investigated the color, material, furniture, and equipment selections necessary to design restaurant and retail spaces, with emphasis upon quick problem-solving and presentation methods. After completing this course, I have the ability to formulate and communicate a comprehensive design for a restaurant and a retail environment.

Restaurant & Retail

When designing the restaurant focus was put on the core values: Harmonious, Coastal. Australian, and Vivid. Using the values, vivid colors and opposing textures from both the Australian Outback and the Great Barrier Reef were incorporated. Focus was put on bringing the native element of nature throughout the design by incorporating large trees and water features throughout the space. There are emphasized intimate gathering niches moving from the bar into the dining area. The furniture and fi nishes were chosen based on comfort, style, privacy and durability.

The bar is to resemble the Great Barrier Reef. The bar top is made out of clean resin that has water running through the red coral. On either side of the bar are two jellyfi sh tanks. These are light so as the jellyfi sh glow. The chairs are made of a metallic blue leather to resemble the coastal shore. The wood is in lighter tones to resemble sand. White sails at the ceiling plane absorb sound which improve the acoustics of the space.

Model Making

This course enhanced three-dimensional visualization techniques for commercial and residential environments. Principles and elements include scale, proportion, plane, volume, light and space. Various types of scale models and construction techniques are investigated. I learned how to assemble accurate three-dimensional representations based on existing plans and elevations. After completing this course, I have the skills to create appropriate scale models to represent the desired three-dimensional intent of a given design.

37

Model Making

The model was created to show part of the space being designed for a one bedroom apartment. I gained an idea of how my design would translate into a 3-dimensional space. It is a great way to evaluate a space before construction.

Basic Space Planning

In this course I investigated three principal areas of information required for design problem solving, within the confi nes of introductory building code and barrierfree requirements. The emphasis for this project was of the physical and psychological factors of design that impact people in their environment including: ergonomics, behavioral patterns, and interpersonal interaction; the programming methods of gathering and organizing data for solving design problems; and creating appropriate spatial relationships and furniture layouts for residential and commercial projects. After completing this course I have the ability to space plan common residential and commercial spaces with considerations for physical and psychological factors, spatial relationships, functionality, and safety.

Basic Space Planning

The fi rst level of the building was designed as an office space and a retail space. In the office space it was designed for a ski pole company. The ski pole company is a new company with young owners so they wanted a space that would be fun but still have a good image for there company. While the retail space was designed for a wedding shop. This space has a large sitting area so to show off all the selections.

Page 41: Portfolio McIntyre

Basic Space Planning

The upper levels of this building is a residential space. The fi rst space was designed for a recent graduate student. It would be a space that is very open and has room for gathering. The second space was designed for a new England couple that likes to host parties but likes the spaces to be divided up.

Furniture Design

This course emphasized innovation and creativity in the design of functional and aesthetically-pleasing furniture designs. I investigated appropriate materials, including sustainable alternatives, and apply appropriate assembly and construction techniques for their designs. After completing this course, I understand and implement the creative, technical, and practical processes involved in the design and construction of custom furniture for specifi c uses.

Furniture Design

For this project I redesigned a mini bar into a bench seat for a hotel. The design was to utilize window space with function. The base of the bench has extra storage for clothing, or linens. The mini fridge and microwave have been built in to open up more space in the room.

Page 45: Portfolio McIntyre

45

Furniture Design

For this project I redesigned a typical casino chair. Most are made of metal and do not have arms. This design was used to incorporate wood, with adding arms and keeping a very classy look. The seat spins so that you still have fl exibility to get in and out of the chair. The seat was designed with blue leather for the seat with a fun print as a back to add fl air.
