Portfolio Layout Planning
For the first couple of pages on the portfolio, I want to include images of my most recent work. In
this case, it will be my final project. In terms of the content that I will show in these pages, I am
thinking that I will include the character turnaround sheets, expression sheets and any concept art
that I have done. Also, I may include screenshots that are in my final project to show some of the
animation and background scenery. In terms of how I will present these images in my portfolio, I will
place them onto a A3 sheet of paper and will colour the paper to suit the theme of the picture. For
example, for the boy character design, I have mainly used a blue colour scheme so I will consider this
when colouring the a3 page. Also, in relation to the positioning of each picture, I had to move them
so that the spacing was fairly equal and looked good overall on the page. If I can, I would like to
include the animation process on these pages too to show how I cleaned up the lines and movement
although, I will see.
-
Next, in the next few pages of my portfolio, I would like to include all of the life drawing and
observational sketches that I have done on the course. I think that this would look good in the
portfolio because I feel that it has helped my drawing skills and I want to demonstrate how I have
improved over the last 3 years. Also, by doing this life drawing, it has helped me to understand
anatomy better and movement, which is very helpful when animating. In these images I have
included life drawings of female and male models in different art materials/mediums and have even
included some digital work too that I have done after completing the sketch. Another process that I
did was using the sketches that I had done of the model and then adapted this to create poses for
character designs. Again, in terms of the layout of these images, I tried to space them out and
coloured the pages to fit the colour scheme of the drawings.
-
Over these pages in my portfolio, I wanted cover any observational/portrait drawings and any other
sketches that I have done recently. As well as digital drawings, I wanted to portray some of my
traditional artwork too. This includes watercolour, graphite, charcoal, acrylic, coloured pencils etc
Also, by including these in my portfolio, as well as displaying my drawing ability, I hope that it helps
to show that I can use a range of art mediums. Also, I enjoy doing portraits and character designing
so hopefully this is shown. Similarly to the other pages, the colour of the a3 page is similar to the
-
theme of the images that are situated on it. For example, if I used warm colours, I have gone more
for a red theme.
For the next couple of pages, I have included images of animal studies that I had to do for my 3D and
2D animations. This was completed to get accurate reference ready for when I animated the animal.
For example, the first image displays some of the key frames that I needed for my 3D tiger animation,
whereas the other page displays the charcoal drawings of the tiger that was drawn on a piece of
paper that was stuck on the wall. They were a1 sheets of paper and each drawing was shot on
camera to create a piece of animation. I thought that I should include these in my portfolio as it
shows that I do my research before starting to animate. Also, I thought that I should include
drawings of animals to show a bit more diversity and that I dont just draw humans or characters.
-
Additionally to the sketches of character that I included earlier, I have included more sketches that I
tidied up in Photoshop as I wanted to show that I can draw characters in different styles. Even
though I will show more drawings of characters in my style, I want to include these because I
thought they might interest the viewer. Even though I tried to arrange the pages so that they were
spaced out, Im not too sure about these pages as they seem a bit cluttered so I may have to address
this for the final portfolio.
On these pages, I will include some of the scenery
processes that I did whilst creating my final
projects. This includes looking at different
backgrounds, perspectives and colour schemes of
different locations, time of day, seasons etc I
thought that this is important as it shows the
development processes and shows how I have
improved them over time. Also, I thought that the
different colours and drawings would look nice in
the portfolio. The layout that I have portrayed
them on also looks nice I think because the grid
has spaced them out nicely so it doesnt look too
cramped.
-
In addition to the production processes of my final project, I wanted to include the earlier stages of it
in order to show the viewer how I have changed the concept and how it has been improved. I think
this is important because it shows my thought processes and how I strive to make something better.
In particular, on these pages I have included old and new screenshots of my animatics and
storyboards. As well as showing the development, I wanted to include these as it considers the
lighting and how the characters will act/be in the story. Also, I quite liked doing this stage in making
my final animation so if there was ever a career opportunity to do storyboarding or animatics in the
future, I may consider it.
-
Lastly, over the next couple of pages, I will include images of my involvement in group projects that I
have done over the 3 years of my animation course and will maybe include this image of
photography. If I can, I would like to include this last page of photography as I do enjoy doing this in
my free time. I feel that photography is important because it helps me to understand lighting better
and different colour schemes in landscapes etc The images that are displayed above are photos
that I have took fairly recently when visiting different places. I included these because I liked the
colours and perspective of the object in the image. Also, it illustrates a bit more about my interests
and about myself. For example, the picture of the dog is my pet.
In terms of the images of the group work animations, I have included screenshots of the scenes that
I was involved in.
For The Boy Who Lost His Name I was involved in creating the models, rigs and texturing of the
Eagle and Cow characters that were in the animation. I tried to include good images of this in my
portfolio in order to see them fully. As well as this, I was also involved in creating the animatics and
storyboard processes of the story. Moreover, as well as taking screenshots of the characters, I have
included the texture sheets that I did in Photoshop. If I can, I will try and take a screenshot of the
Eagle and Cow models in Maya and put this on another page in the portfolio.
For the Captain Bullshit Animation, I was involved in the earlier production stages of the animation
as well as in production. Again, I helped with the storyboard and animatic stages of the story but
then later on I was involved in the lining, colouring and inbetweening of certain scenes. This is
displayed in the images. Also, for this animation I did a bit of voice work so this can be heard in the
final animation.
Similarly to my role for Captain Bullshit, for Pub Wars, I was involved in the animatic and scenery
designing processes of the story and then I helped out with the colouring, lining and inbetweening of
certain scenes in the animation. This can be shown in the images shown. Furthermore, in this
animation we did some 3D too, so I created the textures that were needed for the blueprint stages
of the story.
