Artistic statement“I’m interested in painting portraits because faces are not processed by the brain as mere objects, they spontaneously interact with the viewer. Everyday, we automatically perceive a multitude of faces. Each of them gives us both a sense of familiarity and strangeness”, says Sandrine Astier. Always concerned about the physiognomy of emotions, she approach her portrait painting by trying to free herself from the constraints of hyper-realism, seeking a balance between figuration and abstraction and trying to give all their expressive power to the colours, materials and lines. More specifically, she represents real or fictional people often in close-up, sometimes staged.

She is also intrigued about the relationship between painting and music. Immersed in music since childhood, her work is inseparable from it. Her paintings reach out to music by her wish to express feelings through harmonies, rhythms and colours. Through the series of portraits of musicians, Sandrine Astier reflects how she feels when listening to their musical compositions. Démarche artistique« L’intérêt que je porte à la peinture de portrait résulte du fait que les visages ne sont pas traités par le cerveau comme de simples objets ; ils entrent spontanément en interaction avec le spectateur. Quotidiennement, la multitude de visages que nous percevons automatiquement nous procure une sensation à la fois de familiarité et d’étrangeté. »

Toujours soucieuse de la physionomie des émotions, Sandrine Astier expérimente la peinture de portrait en s’affranchissant des contraintes propres à l’hyperréalisme. Elle cherche l’équilibre entre figuration et abstraction pour tenter de donner aux couleurs, aux matières et aux lignes toute leur force expressive. Plus concrètement, elle représente des personnes réelles ou fictives souvent en gros plan ou parfois mises en scène. Elle est également préoccupée par les relations entre peinture et musique. Immergée dans la musique depuis l’enfance, son travail en est indissociable. Sa manière de peindre se rapproche de la création musicale par cette tendance à exprimer des sentiments au travers d’harmonies, de rythmes et de couleurs. Dans la série de portraits de musiciens, elle traduit picturalement ce qu’elle ressent à l’écoute de leurs compositions musicales. They were chosen for their creativity, the risks they took , their achievements as mothers, businesswomen, artists and their extraordinary roles. Through their unique and singular creation, they offer a powerful energy mingled with hope and love.

All these women from the music and arts business are a source of inspiration for the painter. They carry out humanist messages, leaving room for dream and fantasy.

According to the artist, theses women demand respect.

La musique est la clé...Le cœur de Sandrine Astier bat aux rythmes afro-américain. La Musique pourrait être la clé ou le moteur de sa peinture et ce depuis l’an 2000, quand elle est diplômée de l’Université Marc Bloch à Strasbourg (FR). Aujourd’hui, elle présente un nombre de peintures de héros masculins de la musique jazz, soul, funk africaine et afro-américaine. Ceux qui ne sont pas susceptibles de reconnaître ces musiciens au travers de ces toiles seront frappés par ces hommes aux poses nonchalantes et aux yeux rêveurs. Le rythme et les couleurs de l’Afrique pourront par contre être ressentis par tous. Music is the Key est une série de portraits qui nous donne envie de déterrer quelques albums vinyls laissés dans l’oubli.

Music is the Key...Sandrine Astier’s heart beats to afro-american rythms. Music said to be the key or motor of her painting, even before the year 2000, when she graduated from Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg (FR). She has finished a number of paintings of male heroes of the African and American music tradition. These men with nonchalant poses and dreamy eyes will strike those who aren’t able to recognize the gentlemen in the paintings, but everybody will certainly feel the African rhythm and heat.

ParcoursAprès plusieurs années de formation à la sculpture et au modelage d’après modèles vivants sous la direction de Martine Lutz durant lesquelles Sandrine Astier apprend la représentation en 3 dimensions du corps humain dans son intégralité; elle suit une formation en arts plastiques à l’université Marc Bloch à Strasbourg jusqu’à la maîtrise en juin 2000.

Au travers de cet enseignement riche et diversifié, elle étudie plus en profondeur la peinture à la fois de manière théorique mais aussi pratique au cours d’ateliers dédiés à l’analyse et l’interprétation d’œuvres majeures. Parmi celles-ci, certaines toiles de Frida Khalo, de Pablo Picasso qui s’inspirent de l’art africain ; l’œuvre complète celle de Gustave Klimt auront un impact majeur sur la suite de son travail. « Les compositions de Gustave Klimt mêlant l’apollinien et le dionysiaque me bouleversent ! Il fait partie de ceux qui ont su trouver l’accord parfait entre figuration et abstraction »

Lors de sa maîtrise, c’est la démarche expérimentale du mouvement Cobra qui l’intéresse et devient son sujet favori durant deux années. Au travers de la lecture de leur manifeste, elle met en pratique leurs théories et joue à les appliquer à son propre projet.

C’est à partir de là qu’elle réalise pour la première fois que la peinture sera son principal moyen d’expression à approfondir et pratiquer.

En parallèle, Sandrine Astier est active dans le milieu associatif de promotion des arts et de la musique : « J’organisais des expositions, des concerts, des performances et côtoyais le milieu du Street Art de l’époque. Je participais régulièrement à des fresques murales en déplaçant mes archétypes de la toile vers les murs. Je me limitais au visage plus qu’au corps dans son intégralité cherchant à créer un symbole universel d’être humain. Au fil de mes expérimentations entre murs et toiles, mes archétypes commençaient à se préciser » dit Sandrine Astier.

Artistic backgroundDuring her training in sculpture and modelling based on live models under the direction of Martine Lutz, Sandrine Astier learnt the 3-dimensional representation of the entire human body, she trained in fine arts at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg and obtained her Master of Arts in June 2000. Thanks to this rich and diverse education, she studied painting with deepness both in theory and practice in workshops dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of major works such as paintings by Pablo Picasso inspired by African art or the works of Klimt. The latter still has a great impact on her work. “These compositions mixing Apollonian and Dionysian really touch me! He is of those who have found the perfect balance between figuration and abstraction,” says Sandrine Astier.

At the time of her MA, she was interested by the experimental approach of the Cobra movement, which became her Hobbyhorse for two years. After studying their manifesto, she puts into practice their theories and applied them to her own project.

This is when she realised that painting would be the means of expression she would deepen and practice from now on. Additionally during this period, Sandrine Astier was also active in associations for the promotion of arts and music: “I organized exhibitions, concerts, and performances and was very close to the street art community at that time. I regularly participated in murals, which allowed me to move my archetypes from the canvas to the walls. However, I limited my performance to the face more than the body as a whole and by doing this sought to create a universal symbol of human being. During these experiments between walls and paintings my archetypes became clearer. “ says Sandrine Astier.
