Design and Testing Standards

 Introduction ANSI C37.50 Testing

IntroductionThe Magnum DS power circuitbreaker was designed and tested tomeet the requirements of the worldmarket. It is a 100% rated device, designed to carry 100% of itsnameplate current rating in anenclosure without derating.

Magnum DS circuit breakers are ULListed, and tested to all applicableNEMA, ANSI, IEEE and UL stan-dards. Specifically, the circuitbreakers comply with the following:

ANSI C37.13 (Low Voltage ACPower Circuit Breakers Used InEnclosures)

ANSI C37.16 (Preferred Ratings,Related Requirements AndApplication RecommendationsFor Low Voltage Power CircuitBreakers And AC Power CircuitProtectors)

ANSI C37.17 (Trip Devices ForAC And General Purpose DCLow Voltage Power CircuitBreakers)

ANSI C37.50 (Test ProceduresFor Low Voltage AC PowerCircuit Breakers Used InEnclosures)

ANSI C37.50 testing is demandingand consists of for test sequences. All tests are performed using adraw-out circuit breaker in its enclo-sure for each frame size. The firstthree tests are similar in a numberof ways to tests performed on othertypes of low voltage circuit breakers, such as molded case circuit break-ers. It is the fourth test sequencethat differentiates the power circuitbreaker from other circuit breakers.

Test Sequence 1This test sequence consists of atemperature rise test, an overloadcalibration, and then a short circuittest.

Test Sequence 2 This test sequence consists of aseries of short circuit tests.

Test Sequence 3This test sequence is a test ofendurance.

Test Sequence 4 This test sequence is a momentaryrating test. Other types of low volt-age circuit breakers are not subject-ed to this type of test and, therefore, have no full 30 cycle short time rating.

UL 1066 (Standard For LowVoltage AC And DC Power CircuitBreakers Used In Enclosures)

NEMA SG3 (This StandardAdopts ANSI C37.16 In ItsEntirety

In addition, Magnum DS is suitablefor use in:

UL 1558 LV Switchgear UL 891 LV Switchboards UL CSA 22.2.31 LV Assemblies

Magnum DS circuit breakers areapplicable to forward or reversefeed applications.

Keep in mind that the standardsjust outlined establish the mini-mum requirements. There is noth-ing prohibiting a circuit breakerdesign from exceeding standardsby offering additional featuresand/or higher levels of perfor-mance. Magnum DS does this in anumber of areas.

ANSI 37.50 TestingLow voltage power circuit breakersare applied at their nameplate rat-ing. That nameplate rating is aresult of having successfully com-pleted a series of rigrous tests. This is the 100% rating.

Rigid Frame Housing

Magnum DS circuit breakers use arigid frame housing construction ofengineered thermoset compositeresins. This material is strong andlightweight having a strength toweight ratio twice that of steel. Inaddition to high strength structuralproperties, this material has excel-lent dielectric characteristics andresists arc tracking.

The 3-piece construction providessupport while isolating and insulat-ing power conductors:

(1) A 2-piece case encloses currentpaths and arc chambers. The

chambers act to channel arc gasesup and out during interruption.

(2) The operating mechanism sitson the front of the case and is cov-ered by an insulating front cover.

The overall strength and rigidity ofthe design also contributes to high-er performance capabilities:

 Higher Withstand Higher Interrupting

The Magnum DS rigid frame hous-ing design allows for precise con-struction, eliminating the need foradjustments. The significantlyreduced frame deflection duringoperation along with stiff compo-nent mounting results in a longerlife operating mechanism.

Circuit Breaker Features

Main Contact System

Single Contact Finger

The performance characteristics ofthe Magnum DS air circuit breakerare primarily attributed to the con-tact design and its movement. Asingle contact finger is the focalpoint of the moving contact. Thissingle contact performs both themain and arcing contact functionson different parts of the same fin-ger.

A complete movable contactassembly is merely a combinationof a number of single contact fin-gers. The exact number of contactfingers required depends upon theframe size and interrupting ratingof the circuit breaker.

backward from heel to toe and toeto heel. When the circuit breaker isclosed, the “Heel” (main contactportion) is in contact with the sta-tionary contact and carrying cur-rent. At the same time, the “Toe”(arcing contact portion) is separatedfrom the stationary arcing contact.

A compact “C Loop” current pathpermits electromagnetic forces, pri-marily produced as a result of afault current, to supplement theclosing contact forces provided bythe operating mechanism. Thishelps to accomplish two importantthings:

Operating mechanism does nothave to be as large or heavy

Higher short time ratings (with-stand) are achievable

The braided connectors (flexibleshunts) used to attach each contactfinger serve several important pur-poses:

 Eliminate bolted joints reducinghot spots

Reduce required mounting spacefor primary contacts

Allow contact finger motion for“Heel - Toe” rocking

Heel-Toe Action

The “Heel-Toe” movement of thecontact fingers is a critical factor inthe efficiency of the Magnum DSmain contact system. The maincontact portion can be viewed asthe “Heel” and the arcing portionthe “Toe.” Its movement is similarto the rocking of a foot forward and

Motor Operator

Magnum DS Circuit Breaker Being Manually Charged

Field Installable Motor Operator

Circuit Breaker Features

Manual Operation

On manually operated circuit break-ers, the closing spring is onlycharged manually. This is accom-plished through the use of the frontmounted spring-charge handle. Ittakes from 5 to 7 downward strokeson the handle to complete thecharging process.

Standard manually operated circuitbreakers are closed and open byhand using the front mountedManual “ON” and Manual “OFF”buttons respectively. Access tothese buttons can be limited by theuse of an optional, padlockablecover. Complete access to the“ON” button can be prevented withan optional prevent close cover.Spring and primary contact statusindicator windows are located justabove the pushbuttons.

Optional electrically operateddevices are available to automati-cally close or trip open manuallyoperated circuit breakers, and arefield installable.

An optional motor operator is usedto charge the closing spring auto-matically. It can be field installed ina manually operated circuit breaker.Manual circuit breakers are pre-wired for this addition.

Electrical Operation

The closing spring is charged auto-matically by the optional motor opera-tor. It can also be manually charged.

Manual “ON” and Manual “OFF” but-tons are also provided as describedunder manual operation.

Through the use of a mechanical anti-pump feature, an open circuit breakeronly accepts one attempt to recloseeven if the close command continues, preventing motor operator burnout.

A standard circuit breaker with electri-cal operation also has optional electri-cally operated devices available toautomatically close or trip open thecircuit breaker.
