As you know, Power Electronics is a family-owned multinational which has decades of experience in manufacturing and distributing high quality and reliable industrial equipment. Over the last few decades it has become one of the references in the international market for its outstanding design and great performance, but especially for its completely different focus on service; which is not a means to earn more money but a responsibility towards the client and a true philosophy of the corporation.

Based on those principles, it was only a matter of time until we activated our expansion into the US market. Power Electronics USA was created four years ago and a great deal of planning and investigation has come after that, to make sure that the products that we offer this exceptional country will be just as exceptional and will fill in a gap which is presently very visible both in the solar and in the industrial sectors. When we decided to include 28 different inverters with UL certification we knew we were going to introduce not just another option in solar business for our clients, but a true answer to many of the concerns that we have been analyzing and listening to in the past years and months.

One of the first concerns that came up again and again is that of service. Clients who are not happy with the service they are getting from their supplier, who complain that the manufacturer is more worried about getting the paperwork sorted out or even getting an invoice accepted for service before even knowing what is the problem. We all know that usually working with sales representatives is much easier than having to work with the technicians, who seem to belong to another company. In Power Electronics we solved this problem decades ago when our technical division integrated into our sales division. This department has only one goal, keeping the client happy. Our PowerONSuppport concept is not an empty logo, it’s a true belief that through a 24h real service for free, more sales can be achieved. This is one of main reasons to come to the US with a very competitive product, our way of understanding service as it used to be done, treating the client like he’s the boss, because he is.

When I meet with many of our customers or potential customers they all appreciate the possibility to talk about any problem they may have in the future with the same technician, and even with his boss or with the sales representative, who are all going to be available 24/7 to make sure his problem is going to be solved. But they usually say… you know you can’t sell only with service. You need more: you are going to need a product which has real competitive advantages, stuff you can prove... higher productivity, better guarantees, and a competitive price. If you can put all that together you are looking at a market full of possibilities which will welcome you warmly, very competitive but welcoming. And that’s what we did.

If you asked me why would you buy a Power Electronics inverter in the US instead of any other brand, from a technical perspective, probably the first thing that I would tell you is that we were the last ones to get here. And you might think… Why is that good? Well, it’s good because we’ve had time to see what has gone wrong, what are the greatest problems other brands are facing and how they are challenging them, and to really analyze which features our inverter must have to make itself clearly competitive against the others. So we could start off by talking about how our Outdoor inverter is completely modular, but not modular in the traditional sense, as some others are - but also automatic & redundant. Meaning that in a central inverter you have the benefits of having completely independent modules (from under 80kw right up to 150kw) which have a control board, a power board, IGBT, filters, independent ventilation system, etc all set into independent modules, connected by optic fibre cable and working on a master slave system.

In case there is any fault in any of the modules the system will continue working automatically. Not only that, another advantage of this system is that it is highly efficient and low power production situations (early morning and afternoon) because it is based on the efficiency of one module, not the whole monoblock (more details about this in the american version of our HEC UL catalogue). However, it basically means more bang for your buck.

Another thing that makes our US HEC UL inverter different is that we have learned a lot from our Industrial expertise in the past decades, selling to mining companies, water treatment authorities, desalination plants, offshore and onshore oil & gas, chemical industry, etc… Often you don’t really know where your drive is going to be and what the environmental conditions will be, maybe you will have salty mist because of the proximity of the sea, or you will have sulphur dioxides, or even suspended particles of any nature. This taught us to be safe rather than sorry. We decided that all our units would carry conformally coated electronics as standard and that we would enclose them without forced ventilation to completely avoid them getting dirty and humid, guaranteeing years and years of protection and care to the, lets not forget it, most delicate and important part of the inverter.

Following this line of reasoning we realized that some manufacturers were offering stainless steel as an extra along with their quotes, and quite an expensive upgrade actually. But we thought that if you want to be sure that an inverter will last at least 20 years without rust of structural problems in any environment you must go with stainless steel, of courseit is more expensive, not a good move according to some in these cost cutting times that we are facing, but really if you are a company like us, giving 24h service for free and giving extended warranties to up to 20 years, you have to make sure your equipment is designed to comply with these demanding conditions.

Obviously operating temperatures is sometimes that not many manufacturers want to talk about. There are extreme temperatures in the US, it’s like a continent that when you want to develop a product that will adapt correctly to so many different conditions, and work up to 50º without any derating, you really have to make sure you have done your homework. A quick technical check of our system will show you how we oversize our critical components and heatsinks, how we are giving more space between our enclosed and ventilated area, how we use more copper and aluminum… Our units are bigger and heavier than most of our competitors, but it’s not because we didn’t know how to make a smaller central inverter, of course we did - it would have been easier, but we would have lost our differentiating values. It would have been “one more on the market”, instead… It’s THE inverter. You know temperature is a very big issue in many areas all over the States, specially when some manufacturers aren’t taking into consideration the radiation of the sun when they make their temperature calculations. And when they aren’t even including thermal panels like rockwool or similars to keep the heat out, which we ARE doing.

So, when we got together to create the inverter we wanted for the US market we decided we weren’t going to make any money on monitoring either, it’s not our business - most companies have their own systems and if they don’t we will provide them with ours free of cost, and of course with no maintenance fee.

So let’s talk about availability, this word is almost as ubiquitous as bankability, which we will come to later. But what we realized was that (not only in the US but also in Europe) one of the most important fears of our clients was… What happens when something goes wrong? You have a central inverter, which means that you have a lot of power connected to one unit and the idea of something going wrong and then having to wait for weeks to get it repaired is definitely scary. So what we did was work on this idea from three different angles:

1. Our system is completely modular, redundant and automatic so you will only be losing one module, never all the inverter.

2. Our 24h service will always be available in the same 24 hours after any fault is communicated

3. We will be responsible to stock enough spare parts in a reasonable distance to the plant so solve any problem

That is why Power Electronics offers 99% availability on their inverters for FREE

We would never do that if our system wasn’t completely redundant and automatic, because when you come to think of it, if you have a 10MW park and you have 100 modules of 100kw each you would need to have all those 100 modules stopped for three days and al half, and I can tell you, we have almost 1GW installed worldwide and that has NEVER happened. That’s our 99% availability guarantee.

Plus we never charge you for commissioning, we believe that a good commissioning is the perfect way to start a project together so, no matter how many days it takes or how long, we will be with you to make sure everything is working correctly, that’s how we do business.

From a Corporate point of view, Power Electronics already has an office in San Francisco and another one in Miami and as an important and promising pipeline which will make the US one of its top solar markets along with UK, Southafrica and Southamerica (not forgetting Japan).

Something that we usually talk about in the solar business is bankability. Sadly until some time ago, bankability was often considered as synonymous to size, and look at where that took us. So now, bankability is based on two ideas, one is diversification and the other is economic health. The latter because in the end we know solar is highly political and volatile, it can go really well for some years and then go really wrong for a few more… and what happens to those manufacturers who are only in the solar business. Do you really think they are going to keep their 30 technicians when they have sold all the units they are going to sell and are focusing on other markets? Probably not.

That’s why it’s so important for us to remind our clients that we are an industrial company, we were, are and will always be an industrial company, who greatly enjoys being in solar but if solar goes cold we will have mining, oil & gas, chemicals, water, cement, plastics, etc - which is something that many of our competitors can’t say. The second point is health… well we are a family owned company, now a multinational corporation with delegations in more than 30 countries and we are proud to say that we owe no money to the banks and that there is no public investment or equity in our company. Just hard work and many years of steady growth, and that is something that nowadays

Page 5: Power Electronics Magazine July 2013

generates two things: trust and confidence. But we all knew we really had to bring something different to the US market if we wanted to be successful… If we want clients to even consider a new supplier in these times we had to bring three things to the table; one is a better product from a technical point of view (I always challenge the technical teams of our potential customers to put a comparative analysis together with their favorite brands and get back to me, which usually leads to very interesting discussions and is very useful to us from a commercial point of view, if I didn’t know my product was one of the best, I would never try that line of reasoning).

Two is pricing, there is no way a new brand can introduce itself in a market like the US where everyone is being very competitive, without very competitive prices. However, what we must do here is look at the full picture, look at the bottom line of the proposal. It’s not only the inverter, it’s the 50º without derating, it’s the modular system, the 99% availability, free commissioning, free monitoring, free spare parts availability, free 24h service all over the country. If you add all that up with other manufacturers, there you have the price you should be comparing.

And three is a better service, the real service… This area which has been so badly treated in the past years, specially in the solar business. Why should a client have to buy spare parts for his own equipment, even during the warranty, why should he have to pay extra money if he needs a technician to come to the site in the same day? Would we accept this if a car dealer was asking us to buy separate wheels, another gear box, even an extra steering wheel… and monthly payments after we buy the car, just so that if we have a problem we can bring it to him and get it fixed? Wouldn´t that be consider that an outrage? So… why put up with it in the solar business?

A friend of mine told me once that he would walk out of any meeting where the inverter manufacturer would give him the wrong answer to a question he always made. “Will you allow me to fix the inverter after two weeks stopped, and then bill you the expenses?”. The answer of the manufacturer was almost always NO. And he would get up and say, you are twice wrong, and we will not likely be doing business together. First you are wrong because I should be able to service something without losing the warranty if you are late, and second you should have said: “You will never have one of our inverters stopped for two weeks, don’t be ridiculous!” But we all know it’s not so ridiculous don’t we?

So, in 2013 we have begun a wonderful adventure with a great team, if you are reading this now it means you actually got to the end of the article, which I appreciate, and that hopefully we may have the chance to walk part of the path of the American market together. As you already know, myself and all my team are at your disposal for anything you may need. Let the game begin!

Kind regards.

We have become a leading reference in the sector and our brand awareness has made visitors seek us out. We know that competitors

consider Power Electronics a reference bidder on large scale solar PV plants around the world, thanks to the great work done in arising

markets like the UK.

The main market for large-scale use of solar power in Europe remains with the United Kingdom, but projects in Eastern European countries are

beginning to grow strongly such as Poland, Bulgaria and Turkey. In the case of the U.S. market, large projects are planned to start at the end of this year, these projects as well as the ongoing ones in Latin America will be discussed during Intersolar San Francisco convention. The main actors of the sector are still Europeans, and a product quality along with our performance in the UK, is our best introduction card to be considered in their future projects worldwide.

It has been yet another year where our CRT bikes sponsorship has also been an interesting attraction

in our stand by exhibiting of one the official bikes and offering the opportunity to win two VIP passes to the Germany Grand Prix.

For decades, high power facilities have been located in isolated areas that have made investment in grid connection unfeasible, so many have been powered by gas, diesel or fuel generators. Despite a rising trend in oil prices and government taxes imposed on high CO2 producers, any other feasible technologies have not been available until now. It’s a reality, we have already reached photovoltaic – diesel parity!

The integration of an alternative power source creates an unprecedented opportunity to reduce operational costs to off-grid industrial and commercial facilities. Freesun’s design and topology bring together the engineering expertise in industrial power electronics development, and the solar plants economic and technical capability. We are aware of continuous operation applications and understand that a process shutdown could result in a large reduction of income for your company. Therefore a unique modular and redundant system, ensures the availability of string inverters and the competiveness of central inverters. We offer a set of solutions that can be customised to your facilities to ensure maximum yield and optimal energy management.

Power Electronics is already a supplier to the world leading companies in Mining, Water and the Oil & Gas sector around the globe (Australia, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Korea, South Africa, Spain…) due to highly reliable product which has brought us to where we are now; outstanding technical service POWER ON SUPPORT, together with our vertically integrated production which allows us to offer unique delivery times.

AUTOMATION ANd CONTROLApplying its expertise in Automation and Control, Power Electronics releases efficiency, its Integrated Management System for Energy Saving and Efficiency.

efficiency is our control system that allows for remote control and automatic management in real time of the consuming loads of each property of your chain.

AN INTEGRAL SOLUTION

Our System of Monitoring, Control and Management is actively supported by self-developed technologies for eco-efficient facilities, controlling:

• Lighting for all areas: meeting rooms, internal areas, signs and parking.• Air conditioning units: in each zone based on a temperature set point and comfort.• Production equipment: ovens, fryers, cabinets, refrigerators, ice machines, cold tables, etc..

efficiency, installed in each established business chain transmits thousands of signals simultaneously and in real time, from each HVAC unit, lighting area, production or cold storage device to our management center (24x7), which creates efficient and durable facilities, without affecting comfort standards.

This does not mean that our system requires structural changes, nor the incorporation of devices in existing HVAC units, nor the change of the lightning system. By just installing our electronic system fitted in a small control box, it acts automatically on each of the devices in accordance with a set programming.

TECHNOLOGy, SERVICE AND MANAGEMENT 24 HOURS A DAy

The ultimate goal is to obtain considerable savings (between 23% and 30% approx.), short payback (10/12 months), and continuous centralized control (365 days per year), of each of the energy consuming loads of the chain.

Defining all values allows you to make reasonable use of your equipment with an efficient tool that provides information in real time about its use, state of the machines, its maintenance and predicting all on a centralized basis.

Savings in case study.
