Effective Communication

• Ask permission to discuss military service

– Don’t be afraid to ask, just make sure the Veteran wants to discuss their military history with you.

– Do not assume that they want to share – ASK FIRST!

• Thank you for your SERVICE!

• Welcome Home!

• Most Important – LISTEN!

Ineffective Communication

• Questions about whether or not they killed someone

• Questions about what they saw: “Did you see anything gross or nasty?”

• Statements about being glad they are “home” or asking if they are glad to be “home”

• Offering prayer without permission/request from the Veteran

• Why did you go there?

• Was it worth it?

• Others?
