Q : How was your experience at ARE Awards ceremony?A : Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) works as a forum to advance access to clean energy and energy services in developing and emerging countries, its members consist of whole value chain of renewable energy sector. I recently represented PPAF at the 4th ARE Energy Investment Forum cum Award ceremony held in Catania, Italy where PPAF was awarded for its renewable energy initiative. There, I also got an opportunity to network with several stakeholders engaged with decentralized/distributed clean energy projects and share PPAF’s contribution towards poverty alleviation in the off-grid rural selements. The Business Matchmaking Day –featured a series of panel discussions with selected development finance institutions (DFIs) and private sector representatives. Over 135 participants took part in more than 450 B2B meetings where participants had chance to meet with potential business partners.

Q : How PPAF Renewable Energy programme is different from other countries?A : PPAF’s RE programme is unique because in our case ownership of the project lies with the end users (community). The community institutions have project, audit and operation & maintenance (O&M) commiees who identify their needs, implement the project and take responsibility of its operation and maintenance. Depending on size of the project, the O&M commiee is transformed into a community owned public utility that owns the system/equipment, operate the plant, decides the tariff, collects the revenue from connected households and hire services of a trained operator. The local community uses the revenue for project’s sustainability.

Q : Tell us about future strategy for RE implementation & sustainability?A : As part of future strategy, efforts are underway to transform knowledge and experience gained in implementation of off-grid clean energy projects into sustainable and replicable business model that can help in empowering beneficiary communities through productive use of renewable energy.

Under the initiative community groups were formed focusing women and children. Awareness sessions were conducted for them on environment protection through safe disposal of solid waste. The groups were linked to the local scrap collectors and were sensitized to contact the municipal administration for ensuring collection of waste from the houses. The communities are now living in a cleaner and healthier environment.

Q : What does innovation mean in PPAF’s context?A : Innovation is the practical implementation of an invention, while invention is the first occurrence of an idea for a new product or process. Basically, innovation is the aempt to carry invention out in to practice. Within PPAF, we define innovation as an improvement in any process or product allowing itself to ensure beer service delivery, solutions and products for ending poverty, restoring hope and securing the future.

Q : How do you envision the practical implementation of innovation within PPAF?A : Practically, we see innovation as a two-stream work at PPAF. We will be sourcing internal and external innovation. Currently, we are focusing on mechanisms for external sourcing, such as building collaborations with different organisations and conducting researches. In the next financial year, we will start working on internal sourcing of innovation.

Q : You mentioned collaborations; can you elaborate what these collaborations are?A : We are currently engaging different organisations for collaborations, such as the National Incubation Centers (NICs), universities, accelerators and donor bodies. One example of this is our partnership with NIC Karachi, where we will explore ways to take SDGs focused startups to our communities for testing products and solutions for poverty alleviation. Another side of this will be connecting our communities based young persons with business ideas to NIC Karachi for incubation.

&Training on Gender and Organizational Change atthe International Training Centre of ILO in Turin, Italy

Gender & organizational changeA9011195 - Turin (Italy), 9-13 April 2018

A GenCom team comprising Ms. Summaira Faisal, Mr. Muhammad Umair Bu and Ms. Raabiya Babar recently aended a five days training on Gender and Organisational Change at the International Training Centre of ILO in Turin, Italy. The exposure enabled the participants to understand change management and decision making processes and how they may affect gender issues within the organisation. Some of the topics covered during the training included context and concepts of managing change, understanding barriers to gender equality, role of individual in promoting change and leading organisational change to gender equality. The training provided participants a seven step roadmap for promoting gender equality in the organisation with establishing readiness to change as the first step. The trainers stressed that gender equality and effectiveness go together. They discussed organisational models and their characteristics and deliberated on different approaches and tools to engendering organisational change. The trainers shared that bringing about an organisational change with respect to gender equality is not something easy to achieve, also it is important to first clearly identify the desired or the anticipated change, followed by identification of agents of change who could lead the change process. However, like all other processes the organisational change process also needs constant monitoring to help understand that what needs to be sustained and what needs to be changed.

The village Dehro is situated in Union Council Bar Aba Khel in Tehsil Kabal, Swat and comprises of 200 households. The PPAF team learned that people are more engaged and organised and looking forward to resolve their issues including tackling water shortage and conservation of trees in the area to prevent adverse climatic effects affecting the area due to deforestation. Furthermore, the local people now have a beer understanding for the need to educate their children, including both boys and girls. There is currently a demand by the local community to have a middle school for girls in the village, since the nearest middle school is quite far away.

Another positive aspect discussed during the visit was inclusion of women in the local community with respect to addressing their needs and providing solutions to their problems.
