Please keep in mind that this is just an example of a room from Friendly Housing! As we have many accommodations, room specifications may vary. The rooms we have to offer all measure up to Friendly Housing four core values: Safety, Hygiene, Pleasant living and Durability. This means that all the houses and rooms live up to our highest safety standards, our highest hygiene standards, that we provide a pleasant environment for you as well as the neighbourhood and all in a house built and equipped in a durable way! For example all houses have fire extinguishers and every room in the house is provided with a fire alarm. All the common areas in our houses are being cleaned several times during your rental period (depending on the amount of tenants in the house). Because we provide you a room equipped with all the needed furniture made out of good quality materials, we ensure you a pleasant stay in one of our houses at all times

Core Values Friendly Housing works out of a four core value standard: Safety; Hygiene; Pleasant living and Durability. These four values can be found back in everything we provide you, and form the corner stone of a pleasant and responsible stay in one of our houses. Safety All of our houses measure up to our highest safety standards. They all are equipped with safety appliances to guarantee the safety of our tenants as well as the neighbourhood. For instance all of our houses are equipped with safety locks an are double glazed. All rooms and common areas are equipped with a fire alarm, which upkeep is done by our own technical service. The doors, walls and other construction work has been made out of fire preventing materials and on all floors a fire extinguisher is present, as well as safety routes. We have a strict policy towards our tenants about keeping our common areas free of trash and other things that could block the safety routes. On top of that our technical staff is responsible for all the upkeep concerning the house. By doing regular check ups several times a year, we can guarantee the safety of our houses.

Hygiene All of our houses measure up to our highest hygiene standards. By cleaning our houses several times during your rental period, we can provide you a nice, clean and healthy living space. All of our houses are being cleaned several times a month, depending on the size of the house. Our professional cleaning team will make sure you will be staying in a healthy environment your whole rental period. A cleaning schedule of your house will be online soon. On top of our own cleaning service, we have a strict policy about trash and keeping the house clean towards our tenants. Pleasant living The most important core value is ‘pleasant living', not only for our tenants but also for the neighbourhood our tenants are placed in. Tenants: We want to make the rental period of our tenants as pleasant as possible. This is done by providing them with all necessary service, equipment and information. All of our houses are equipped with all necessary appliances and all of our rooms are furnished with all necessary equipment, tenants don't have to make extra costs. Because of the upkeep our technical service provides, no problems should ever occur within our houses. When problems do occur we obtain this website for all necessary trouble shooting. All the information a tenant could need about living in one of our houses, can be found on this website. As well as all the information might needed about living in Holland and especially living in Eindhoven, this all to make our tenants stay as pleasant as possible. Neighborhood: We don't only want to provide our tenants a pleasant living, but also the neighbourhood around our houses. When ever there is a student house placed in a neighborhood, some neighbours get frightened about the nuisance they think they will be put up with. With our houses this is not necessary. First of all we have a screening on which tenants will and won't be renting a room from us. In that way we're always certain we have responsible tenants living in our houses. On top of that we have a strict policy towards our tenants to respect your neighbours in order to a pleasant living for the tenants as well as the neighborhood. Please read more about this here. Durability Also highly valued is the durability of our houses as well as the relationship between Student Eindhoven and her tenants. In order to let our houses be as durable as possible, we only make use of the most efficient constructions and products in and around our houses. For instance all of our houses are provided with high end kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies, carpeting and all are double glazed. All houses contain central heating and are all well isolated. Because the upkeep all is done by

Page 5: Practical information to start renting your room

our own technical staff, we can always maintain the durable state our houses are made to be in. When problems occur, our technical staff will always solve them as quick as possible to sustain a durable living.

Rights & Obligations Taxes Holland all municipal tax bills are addressed to the person living in the student house the longest. This does not mean that the tenant the bills are addressed to has to pay them. Student Eindhoven will pay for these bills. Therefore we ask you to fax a copy to our administration or mail the original to our office so we can pay them. Be sure to do this in time, because when you are too late we will receive a fine which will be forwarded to you for not sending the bill in time. Internal moving It's possible to switch rooms within the house you're staying in. It's also possible to switch houses as long as they are in our management/agency. Please notice that switching rooms will bring administrational costs of €100, - Please also keep in mind that it's possible the rental price of the new room is higher than the rental price of the current room. It's not possible to move to another place, which isn't in our management. When you want to, it means you are not living up to your contract and you will have to pay for the whole period which you agreed on at the start of your rental period. Only then you can move to another house outside our management. End inspection Before ending your rental period an end inspection must take place. This means that the condition of your room will be checked for any flaws or damage before you're leaving. Our technical service will work down the same list as done at the start of your rental period. This will be done together with you. When there are no flaws or damage found, the deposit will be returned to you within one month. Any flaws or damage found will be taken out of the deposit. You're free to choose your own date to hold the inspection but keep in mind that your keys have to be turned in after the inspection. Please notice that although you have to turn in your keys after your end inspection, your rental period ends at the end of that month. Therefore you have to pay for the whole period including the whole last month. An appointment should always be made at least 4 working days before your departure, so we always have time free in our schedule. Please make an appointment with our Technical Service to have your end inspection held.

Respect your neighbours Because most of our student houses are located in family areas, a good relationship between our houses and the neighborhood is very important to us. We don't only want to provide our tenants a pleasant living, but also the neighborhood around our houses. Therefore we would like to attend all of our tenants to the following; respect your neighbours! When you respect your neighbors, respect will be gained from your neighbours as well. With this mutual respect you can all live in the environment which is pleasant for you both. Respect for your neighbors can be expressed in several ways. First of all do not cause nuisance towards your neighbors. Don't make a lot of noise between 10 pm. and 8 am. This way everyone can enjoy their quiet evenings, nights and mornings. During the day noise can be made but always try to keep it as low as possible, out of respect for your neighbors. Parties are prohibited, but in case of a birthday and probable noise that will be made, please inform your neighbors by sending them a notification or stop by their houses and inform them personally. Nuisance can also be prevented by keeping the street and garden decent. By placing your personal belongings like your bike on the sidewalk in front of the house, neighbors can't walk or cycle properly and will be bothered. So always keep the sidewalk free of personal belongings. When you have a garden, please keep this nice and decent. Whether you have a front or backyard or both, your personal belongings (like bikes, trash or other stuff you've placed in the garden) can cause nuisance towards your neighbors. This because of the view your neighbors have on to your garden which will be disturbed and probable smelling nuisance caused by trash. To create a pleasant environment for you and your housemates, several house rules have been made. When all tenants follow up these rules out of respect towards your housemates, a pleasant stay will be provided by yourselves. Tread your neighbors and housemates like you want to be treated!

Practical Information In this section you can find a lot of practical information that has to do with the daily pace of matter in Eindhoven. Think about Dutch habits, traffic rules, medical care and information about Eindhoven etc. If you have a question you can't find your answers to on this website please let us know! Eindhoven Eindhoven is located in the county Noord-Brabant and has over 210.000 citizens. It's a modern, young and dynamic city that has developed itself from agraric to technologic in a very short time. This is something you can find back in the look of the buildings. There are old fabric buildings from the 1920's and new high tech buildings from the past few years.

Page 8: Practical information to start renting your room

Eindhoven is also remarking green. Nearby the centre lies the nature area "Genneper Parken". They have three different routings with several themes. www.genneperparken.nl. Then you have the "Stadswandelpark", this is an island of nature in the middle of the busy city, with the small River "the Dommel" that is streaming through this park. By this river there are thirty special pieces of art that you can see. Eindhoven has 7 city areas; Centrum, Stratum, Tongelre, Woensel-zuid, Woensel-Noord, Strijp and Gestel. Back in the days all these areas used to be small villages, but now they are one big city together. http://www.vvveindhoven.nl/ Eindhoven is surrounded by a lot of small cities and villages; Geldrop, Veldhoven, Aalst, Waalre, Best, Son, Breugel, Nederwetten, Nuenen, Eeneind. They all have their own small centers and are really nice to visit. The most famous building in Eindhoven is "Evoluon". This used to be a high technology centre where all kinds of new gadgets were presented to the public. Now it's a presentation and seminar building. Eindhoven has become an international city. Philips is the best known company that started in Eindhoven. You can see the marks everywhere. There are big fabric and office areas build by Philips; Strijp-S, Witte Dame and High Tech Campus. Because of the fact that Philips is a multinational there are a lot of foreign employees in Eindhoven. Eindhoven also has its own University of Technology, the Design Academy, Fontys hogescholen and lots of international companies. They attract a lot of foreign students and employees. That's why Eindhoven is a great place to live, being an expat! Climate The Netherlands has a temperate, marine climate. The climate websites will tell you that the "summers are mild and the winters are cool, with rain experienced throughout the year". The average peak summer temperature is 250C. Transport/ Traffic Public Transportation Bus A strippenkaart is the accepted currency required to use the buses. They can be purchased from kiosks close to the stations, news-stands, tobacconists, train stations and post offices. When you get in the bus you have to show your "Strippenkaart". You can purchase; 2 strips (single journey; 1 zone), 3 strips (single journey;two zones), 8 strips(also valid as one day ticket), 15 and 45 strips (multiple journey). You can also buy day tickets and individual ride tickets from the bus driver.

Page 9: Practical information to start renting your room

CAUTION: busses have automatic right of way and will use it on all occasions. You have to watch their flashing carefully. At intersections they mostly have their own sets of lights. Train Trains are run by the national Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). www.ns.nl Trains run between all major Dutch towns and cities. You must purchase your ticket before boarding the train, a conductor will check your ticket once on the train. You will find ticket machines that take chip and pin cards at the station platform. Taxi Official taxis have a blue number plate and often won't accept short fares. For local companies check the Goudengids under "Taxibedrijf". The main company in Eindhoven is Cibatax; 040-2443333 or 0800-2443333 (this is a free number, but you will have to wait longer until someone speaks to you.) Taxi's are not a common form of transport and are very expensive over here. There are only a few taxi ranks around the city and it's quite normal not to see a taxi waiting. It's forbidden to flag a taxi down if you see one driving along. You are required to go to either a taxi rank or call and book one. However, some drivers will overlook this rule. Bicycle Cycling is a national past-time and thank to the unrelenting flatness of the country, the locals find it the perfect way to get around. Cycle lanes are well maintained (often better than pavements/sidewalks) and generally have their own lane and cycle racks are abundant. At intersections, cyclists have their own set of lights to obey, they do sometimes try to test this particular rule. Outside of this situation, they have automatic right of way and will take it. Cyclists do tend to take a lot of liberties and will often ride three abreast when there are no cycle lanes apparent and even when there are. You will have to wait behind them until it is safe to pass as they will not move aside. Cyclists are not obliged to follow road rules of other traffic and you will find them cycling down one way streets in the opposite direction (they may expect you to pull over and let them through). Be careful when crossing pedestrian crossings, cars and other traffic will stop for you but cyclists won't. When you make a right turn, always look over your shoulder to make sure there are no cyclists behind you trying to catch up on you from the right side. A cycle lane is often situated next to the normal driving lane here in red. Road rules in brief Speed limits 30 kms/h in a residential area 50 kms/h in built-up areas 80 kms/h on provincial roads 100 kms/h on urban motorways, unless signposted otherwise 120 kms/h on open motorway/autoweg, unless signposted otherwise. Be sure to check the small circular signs on the side of the

Page 10: Practical information to start renting your room

road, on the top half will indicate what the speed limit is. Where a number/limit is absent, 120 km/h is observed. Speed cameras Cameras operate on main roads, motorways and traffic lights. Fines can be quite hefty if you got caught. If you are driving faster than the prescribed speed limit you will be photographed and ticketed. Cameras operate at the beginning and end of these zones. Giving way and stopping You must give way or yield to cars approaching from the right unless they are indicated otherwise. Give way is indicated by a series of triangles on the road at the junction point. Stop is indicated by a row of squares at the junction point. Also, when you are travelling on a road where you see a large orange/yellow diamond outlined in white and posted on a pole, you have right of way over any traffic from side streets. It's called "voorrangsweg". You have to give way if you see these marks on a pole or on the road. voorrangsweg end of voorrangsweg right of way on left right of way on right Right of way on both sides STOP before making any move if you see this sign CAUTION: keep on the lookout when driving along what you think would be a main road for connecting roads. Most often drivers without a give way indication will turn in without so much as checking whether their path is clear. In an accident situation, if they were not instructed to give way, you are in the wrong. Legal requirements - The legal driving age is 18 years - You are required to wear seatbelts front and back at all time. - Stop for funeral processions. More often than not however, men in black suits with top-hats will be walking ahead of the motorcade and indicate to you to stop to let the motorcade pass. Be respectful and patient in these circumstances. - Children below the age of 12 are forbidden to sit in the front seat unless strapped in a baby seat. - Children must be traveling in an age appropriate seat until the age of 5. - You must stop for pedestrians on pedestrian crossings (zebra) Miscellaneous - Running red lights, although illegal, seems to be national past time, so look twice when your light is green to check traffic is clear. - Someone coming up behind you flashing their lights means "move aside, let me pass". - Keep your license and car registration papers with you at all times, if someone were to steal your car and the registration papers were inside, this is all the person needs to claim the car as theirs. - Parking wardens are extremely vigilant and unforgiving; they also like to make their monthly quotas. Keep an eye on your time.

Trash The recycling in the Netherlands The Dutch are avid recyclers of waste an unwanted products and are encouraged firmly by Government and local Governments alike. One of the reasons is that landfills and incineration waste disposal is at near capacity in the country, coupled with most of the country being below sea level and the dangers associated with toxic runoff entering the water supply. Also, in 1995 a "refuse tax" was introduced to encourage recycling of household waste, including bottles, paper and organic material at source, placing responsibility onto the homeowners and creators of the waste. Although the background and original reason was to in increase revenue for the Government. Green container

In Eindhoven the green container has its own table to get emptied. In this container you have to put all your organic waste. So no plastics, paper or glass! Gray Container

For the grey container it's the same story, but this is one is used for your normal garbage. Plastics, packaging etc. Recycling- paper, glass and textiles You will find recycling stations all over the city and supermarkets for glass(split into colours), paper and textiles.

Page 12: Practical information to start renting your room

Paper Paper recycling includes all paper products like newspapers, general paper, junk mail, magazines and packaging. Once or twice a month you can put it at the street and someone will come and pick it up. Glass Bottles that you can receive money back on (e.g. Heineken), can be taken to your local supermarket where you feed the items into a machine, which then calculates and gives you a receipt which you take to the checkout. The Albert Heijn delivery service will collect your empties also and take the refund off the cost of your bill. Other general non-rebate bottles are separated into colors (blue, green, brown, clear) and put in the general bins; this includes wine bottles and jars. Don't forget to remove lids and wash or rinse prior to recycling. In most cases you will be able to speak in English although the call will be answered in Dutch. Emergency assistance can be provided at most hospitals 24 hours a day. Hospital The level of service in hospital care you receive in the Netherlands is quite impressive. If there is something with your health or you think you really need to see a doctor fast, you can go to the first aid yourself. In the Netherlands "first aid" is called EHBO, so you should follow these signs. In Eindhoven there are two very good hospitals and they are very reachable. Maxima Medisch Centrum Catharina Ziekenhuis Ds. Th. Fliednerstraat 1 Michelangelolaan 2 5631 BM Eindhoven 5623EJ Eindhoven If you are sick in the evenings or weekends or you can't go for whatever reason to your fixed doctor there is a possibility to go to the Centrale Huisartsenpost. This is located at the Catharina Ziekenhuis. Please keep in mind that the EHBO is for emergencies and the Centrale Huisartsenpost is for urgent but not life-threatening matters. It can be reached trough the internet http://www.chpzob.nl/ or telephone number 0900-8861. The Centrale Huisartsenpost is very expensive so please first try to contact your regular doctor. Finding a Doctor Doctors are called "Huisarts" in the Netherlands. It is your first point of contact in the case of physical or mental symptoms. Specialist visits require a referral from your doctor and he must make his assessment to start this process. As a general rule, Huisarts will resist seeing you if you have flu like symptoms or colds. You can also ring the Doctor during something called "spreekuur", which means consultation hour. Ask the doctor when the hour is, however, it may be best to make an appointment as you could quite possibly spend the spreekuur just trying to get through. Some Huisarts also have an hour first thing in the morning before appointments, when you can drop in for consultation without an

Page 14: Practical information to start renting your room

appointment. Specialist care In order to receive care from a specialist whether it be a Cardiologist or a Gynecologist what one first needs to do is make a visit to the Huisarts. He will write you a referral (verwijsbriefje). This letter allows you to make an appointment with a specialist at the hospital. In most cases you will not be accepted by a specialist without this referral letter. Dental Care A dentist is called a "Tandarts" in Dutch. If you need to see one you can find one in the telephonebook under "Tandarts". Going out Café In the centre of Eindhoven there are a lot of nice café's and bars. There is one street called "Stratumseind" that has the most bars in one street in whole the Netherlands. So you must find something you like over there. http://www.stratumseind.nl/ On the Stratumseind you can find Cafe Thuys. Once per 2 months a foreign student night will be organised here. Check out this website for the latest news or subscribe to our newsletter. http://www.thuyscafe.nl Nearby this street at the side of the church there is also "the Irish Pub". http://www.osheaseindhoven.com/. A lot of people from abroad go there to meet each other. Also "Eindhoven Expats", arranges meetings in this café. Dancing Unfortunately Eindhoven doesn't have a lot of clubs. You can dance in a lot of cafes at the Stratumseind and in the 2 clubs we have in Eindhoven. De Massa: Dommelsstraat 7 http://www.demassa.nl/ De Danssalon Stationsplein 4 http://www.dedanssalon.nl Cinema There are three cinemas in Eindhoven. One is located nearby the train station on a square called "Stationsplein", it is called "Pathé". At the keizersgracht, ‘zien-bioscoop' is located. This is a service cinema where it's able being served while your watching a movie. A little outside the centre there is also a cinema called "Plaza Futura", this cinema shows a lot of alternative movies an documentaries. Pathé: Dommelstraat 11 http://www.pathe.nl/eindhoven Plaza Futura: Leenderweg 65 http://www.plazafutura.nl/ Zien Bioscoop: Keizersgracht 19 http://www.zienbioscoop.nl

Dining out Eindhoven also has a lot of restaurants, with food from all different cultures and with different prices. In the centre of the city there are a lot of restaurants you can pick from. You have some streets where a lot of them are located; Dommelstraat; Stationsplein; Wilhelminaplein; Willemstraat; Kleine Berg. Shopping You may find that shopping in the Netherlands is quite a different experience then what you are used to. Use the following as your guide: - Take your own bags to the supermarket - There are no "one-stop-shops" - Don't forget to take a number, if no number is apparent keep an eye on who comes in after you (this only counts for small shops. In the supermarket you never have to take a number) - Always keep lots of cash on hand - Trolleys (winkelwagens) are all coin operated, remember to take 0, 50 cent and €1, - coins with you. Opening hours Strange as this may seem, this is quite an important topic because the opening hours are limited and a little frustrating when you are used to being able to "pop out" and get stuff. Officially supermarkets are permitted to open from 8 AM till 10 PM during the week. Also everything is closed on Sundays. Only the First Sunday of the month the shops in the centre are open. The last Sunday of the month the shops in Shopping centre Woensel are open. The actual opening hours for the other days are as follows: Monday (if at all): 13.00-18.00 Tuesday to Thursday: 10.00-18.00 Friday: 10.00-21.00 Saturday: 10.00-17.00 Sunday (if it's the first or last of the month): 12.00-17.00 There are some large supermarkets that are open from 8 AM to 10 PM. But most of them close at 8 PM. So be aware you don't go to the wrong one! Eindhoven has 2 nightshops. They are located at Grote Berg 49 and Kruisstraat 92. These are both in and around the centre of eindhoven. Bike rent A bike is the most common transportation in the Netherlands. Especially in the larger cities it's the easiest way to get from A to B without getting stuck in traffic. Student Eindhoven provides bikes for rent. Please contact our Administration for more information.
