The upward trend in incoming tourism to Prague continued in Q1 2018. The number of

visitors and overnight stays increased year-on-year.

Prague is becoming an ever-more-popular destination even in winter, the quietest

season of the year. This year for the first time the number of overnight stays by

foreign tourists passed three million.

Besides the ever-increasing tourism from Germany, Russia, South Korea and China,

the city also experienced a song resurgence of interest from Spanish visitors

(+38.7%).

Visitors

Between January and March 2018, Prague collective accommodation establishments

welcomed 1,499,044 guests.

Foreign tourists were in the lead here, with 1,239,848 visitors (82.7%).

The same period saw 259,196 Czech residents (17.3%) seeking accommodation.

This means an increase of 121,224 visitors (8.8%) year-on-year.

Resident and non-resident visitors both came in increased numbers.

Non-resident visitors increased by 100,207 (8.8%) and resident visitors increased by 21,017

(8.8%).

Non-residents made up 82.7% of the total increase in visitor numbers.

Visitor numbers grew in all months during the period in question, with 41% of visitors coming

in March.

Overnight Stays

The total number of overnight stays in Q1 2018 came to 3,463,338 nights.

Of this number, foreign visitors accounted for 87.5% (3,029,583 nights),

while residents accounted for 12.5% (433,755 nights).

The number of overnight stays increased by 246,304 (7.7%) year-on-year in the first three

months of 2018. This meant a growth of 222,010 nights (7.9%) from non-residents and

24,294 nights (5.9%) from residents staying in Prague.

1. Domestic visitors to Prague

Residents of Bohemia and Moravia most often visited Prague or the Hradec Králové region

(13.2% each) in Q1 this year.

More than a quarter of a million visitors from all corners of the Czech Republic traveled

to Prague in Q1, an increase of 21,017 (8.8%).

Residents made 433,755 overnight stays, which is 24,294 (5.9%) more than the previous

year.

2. Foreign visitors to Prague

Collective accommodation facilities registered 1,239,848 non-residents spending a total of

3,029,583 nights. This meant an increase of 100,207 (8.8%) among foreign visitors and

222,010 (7.9%) in overnight stays by foreign visitors.

As usual, Prague was the main destination drawing visitors from other countries to the Czech

Republic, with 61.7% of foreigners choosing the capital city for their trip.

March saw the highest growth in visitors during Q1, welcoming 42% of visitors during that

month.

Foreign visitors to Prague once again predominantly featured Germans (162,127 total in

Q1). Germany was also responsible for the greatest growth in absolute numbers, with an

increase of 16,880 (11.6%) year-on-year. Germans made up 13.1% of all foreign visitors.

The second country with six-digit visitor numbers was Russia. Russians made up 8.6% of

all foreign visitors. Russia remained the number one source country based on overnight

stays (13.3% of the total). The rate of increase has slowed from that of a year ago, but all

three months in Q1 showed higher numbers of Russian tourists.

The list of countries sending the greatest number of visitors remained largely unchanged.

Other than slight adjustments to lineup, such as South Korea and China moving up one rung

each, the only significant change was Spain taking the place of Poland in tenth place. Nearly

39% more tourists from Spain came in Q1 than in the previous Q1.

65.3% of all foreign visitors came from Europe, 17.2% from Asia, 8.6% from Russia,

4.9% from North America, 2.5% from South and Central America, 0.9 % from Australia,

Oceania and New Zealand and 0.6% from Africa.

Foreign visitors visited the different regions of the Czech Republic in nearly the same

breakdown as the previous year. Visitor numbers from Europe increased by more than

67,000 (9.1%), from Asia by 15,500 (7.9%), and Russians (taken as a separate region)

by 13,649 (14.8%).

Germans made up a full 20% of European visitors, followed by 11.9% from the UK and

10.5% from Italy.

From Asian countries, the most tourists came from South Korea (28.5%) and China (22.6%).

Total number of overnight stays from foreign visitors

Foreign guests spent a total of 3,029,583 nights in Prague during Q1 2018, which is 222,010

(7.9%) more than Q1 2017.

The largest share in overnight stays by foreign visitors belongs to Russia (13.3%)

and Germany (12.1%), with the UK and Italy holding 8% each.

While overnight stays increased among Germans, Russians and Spaniards,

visitors from the USA spent 8.5% fewer nights in Q1 than the previous year.

Comparing Prague tourism with total tourism in the CR

Incoming tourism numbers were up in Q1 in the entire Czech Republic. Collective

accommodation facilities reported a total of 3,971,343 guests, of whom 2,010,928 (50.6%)

were from foreign countries and 1,961,415 (49.4%) were residents of Bohemia and

Moravia.

Total visitors increased by 405,652 (11.4%) year-on-year, split nearly evenly between

residents and non-residents.

The greatest number of visitors to the Czech Republic came from Germany, Russia and

Slovakia.

Germans increased by 13.7% and Russians by 14.3% year-on-year.

Out of the total number of foreign visitors to the Czech Republic, 61.7% traveled to the

capital city, with the Karlovy Vary region trailing in a very distant second (7.6%).

Visitor numbers rose in all regions of the Czech Republic, in the Pilsen region

by 24% in total visitors and 47.3% in foreign visitors.

The proportion of non-residents to residents was the greatest in Prague (87.5%) and the

Karlovy Vary region (63.3%).

In all other regions most visitors came from Bohemia and Moravia.

The number of overnight stays for the entire country was 10,758,270. About half of those

were residents and half non-residents. Overnight stays increased by more than 900,000

(9.3%).

Foreign visitors spend 9% more nights, and residents 9.5% more nights, in Q1 this year than

in Q1 last year.

Zlín was the only region where overnight stays did not increase (in any category). The Czech

Statistical Office recorded the sharpest jump in the Pilsen region (+22%)

and Central Bohemian region (+17.2%).

Germans, Russians and Poles spent the most nights in the Czech Republic.

Germans alone were responsible for more than 1.3 million overnight stays (12.5% of the

total).

The average length of stay in the entire Czech Republic was 2.7 nights, with very similar

results for residents and non-residents alike.

Prague welcomed 56.1% of all non-resident overnight stays in the country.
