Featured Children’s Book

Your Alien and sequel Your Alien Returns written by Tammi Sauer, illustrated by Goro Fujita As we go “trekking across our universe” in July’s storytimes, we’ll share stories about astronauts, aliens and space travel. In Your Alien, a spaceship crashes and a little boy gets a new friend – the alien on board. He takes it to school, they have a lot of fun, but by bedtime, the alien is homesick. The little boy knows just what to do. This is a great story for kids to practice their narrative skills in describing things like feelings, kindness and clever ideas! In the sequel, Your Alien Returns, the alien invites the little boy for a playdate and the boy gets to be the one to go for a trip to a new planet! Very heartwarming stories and we will definitely be sharing both in storytime.

Something new! The Ruth Culver Community Library has teamed up with 6:8 and we will be presenting songs and stories before the Community Meal on Wednesday, July 10. Beth and Bethany will team up to share sto-ries with two readers and songs with two parts! Should be a good time! Storytime will start at 4:15 p.m. and the free Communi-ty Meal is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 6:8. Their address: 821 Industry Road, Sauk City. Please join us!

June’s Book Review Spies of Shilling Lane by Jennifer Ryan

Phyllis Braithwaite is a middle-aged woman traveling to Lon-don by train during the blitz. It’s 1940 and she’s going to visit her 20-year-old daughter Betty. Recently Mrs. Braithwaite’s hus-band divorced her. Also she’s been asked to step down as the head of the ladies group in her village.

When Mrs. B. arrives at Betty’s boarding house the landlord tells her Betty hasn’t been home for days! With London being bombed every night by the Luftwaffe Mrs. B. sets out to locate Betty. She gives the landlord, Mr. Nor-ris, no choice but to help her. Together they break into houses and infiltrate a Nazi spy ring. Eventually Mrs. Braithwaite is

forced to rethink her ideas of class and reputation and learn what’s really important in life.

Midwife of Hope River by Patricia

Harman

Midwife Patience Murphy has a gift: a

talent for escorting mothers through the

challenges of bringing children into the

world. Working in the hardscrabble con-

ditions of Appalachia during the Depres-

sion, Patience takes the jobs that no one

else wants, helping those most in need—

and least likely to pay. She knows a suc-

cessful midwifery practice must be built

on a foundation of openness and trust—

but the secrets Patience is keeping are

far too intimate and fragile for her to

ever let anyone in.

Honest, moving, and beautifully detailed,

Patricia Harman’s The Midwife of Hope

River rings with authenticity as Patience

faces nearly in-

s u r m o u n t a b l e

difficulties. From

the dangerous

mines of West

Virginia to the

terrifying atten-

tions of the Ku

Klux Klan, Pa-

tience must strive

to bring new

light and life into

an otherwise

hard world.
