• Elicit the characteristics and benefits of each. Which one is harder? Which one

is better for fitness?• Ask for corresponding examples. Are there any activities which incorporate

both cardio and resistance?Comments

Aim: Students will create a speech and role play a dialogue for a selected sport. Stage: ProducePage:Time: 15-20 mins Method:

• Divide class into groups of several students each.• Each group prepares a speech aimed at recruiting people to their chosen

activity. They must act out their dialogues (among themselves or to the class, depending on size), with some students being the recruiters, and others beingpotential recruitees. Recruitees are already practitioners of other sports, need tobe convinced to ‘switch sides’. Must ask recruiters questions.

• After each team has presented their sport, the class votes. The team with themost “points” wins.

Aim: Students will describe some pictures that have to do with sports. Stage: PracticePage:Time: 10-15 mins Method:

• Hand out sheets containing pictures of famous athletes ‘in action’. SerenaWilliams, Jackie Chan, He Kexin, Liu Xiang, etc.

• Elicit information about what is going on in each picture, eg basketball game, awards ceremony, press conference, training/gym session. Students must cite

visual evidence to justify their answers.• Encourage students to take all the 1-2 word answers given and link them into

proper sentences that effectively and efficiently describe each visual: ‘SerenaWilliams is holding a trophy and smiling because she has just won a tenniscompetition.’

Aim: Students will discuss “hard” martial arts. Stage: PracticePage:Time: 10-15 mins Method:

• Elicit from the students different types of martial arts. Ask whether or notmartial arts are popular in China—why/why not?

• Elicit responses about the different kinds of martial arts. What are they? Doesanyone practice them? If anyone admits to knowing some, ask them to please

Aim: Students will discuss “soft” martial arts. Stage: PracticePage:

Time: 10-15 minsMethod:

• What about Tai Chi? Is it good for fitness? Is it good for self-defense? Arethere any practitioners in the class?

• What is the difference between Tai Chi and Qi Gong? Are there other similar‘soft’ martial arts, in or outside China? (For example, yoga).

• Elicit information about Qi Gong, meditation, mind over matter, Shaolinmonks and their abilities, for example: lighting self on fire, breaking cementblocks with head, controlling blood flow, what else?

Do students think that Qi Gong etc. more difficult to master than kung fu?• Brainstorm: is the ‘Shaolin lifestyle’ a good/admirable one? What are the

advantages/disadvantages? (spiritual enlightenment, mastery of pain vs. beingsocially cut off/unproductive, celibacy)

• Have any of the students ever wanted to be Shaolin, now or in the past?Why/why not?
