—Gloria Chan
Drop-In EnthusiastGloria Chan, 2nd Year Pharmacology Student
Gloria started as a participant in UBC Intramurals events, volunteered for programs, and is now an Ops staff that facilitates Drop-In programming in the SRC. She’s also been instrumental in developing our Wheelchair Basketball Drop-In programs. First Year StudentMichael Suey, 1st Year Sauder School of Business Student
Michael’s journey with recreation started when his Residence Advisor put his floor in for a just-for-fun Day of the Longboat team. Throughout the year he also joined a few UBC Intramurals league teams and Stormed the Wall! UBC Recreation programs turned out to be an incredible way to form stronger relationships with his floor mates as well as a way to refresh his mind from university class work.
Competitive AthleteOlivia Zawadiuk, 2nd Year Kinesiology Student
Olivia’s been a member of the UBC Synchronized Swimming Thunderbirds Sport Club (TSC) since starting at UBC two years ago. She’s been an elite athlete for most of her life, and was worried when starting school that she wouldn’t be able to compete anymore - that’s when she found out about TSC.
Team PlayerGreg Goana, 4th Year Commerce Student
Greg transferred to UBC in 2015 and has since become an active user of the BirdCoop Fitness Centre, participated in recreation events, and is an executive of the UBC Thunderbirds Dragon Boat Sport Club. Being involved with his team has enhanced his life by reducing his stress levels and helping him maintain a balanced lifestyle.

At my first basketball drop-in there were a lot of really tall guys, and then just me – a girl in a wheelchair. Honestly, I did feel intimidated at first, but soon felt more in my element and have even made a few new friends! It’s truly a welcoming and inclusive environment.

❱ UBC Intramurals Leagues See page 34-35 for more info
Being a part of a team allowed me to spend time with friends, do something fun, and get some well-needed exercise which is often easier said than done in the heart of a semester. It was a huge stress reliever for me.

❱ Sport Clubs Executive Team
The TSC program provides athletes with opportunities to compete, as well as work in leadership positions within their clubs. This year I was elected Club Lead which means I am the liason between my club, the University, and our governing body. At the end of the day it’s our team’s goal to be a top competitor at Nationals, and it’s the Club Lead’s job to make sure we get there.

Having recreation programming so close to work is what initially attracted Florence to sign up for classes in 2012, but she soon realized the huge variety of programs meant there’s always something new to try out. Whether it’s an early class to start the day off on a positive note, lunch-time exercise to reset the mind, or a fun class to look forward to at the end of the day, there is always an exciting option for her to get moving.

How do members of the community get involved in Recreation at UBC?
Active Senior Anne Jull
Things looked a lot different when Anne got involved with recreation at UBC in 1976, particularly the Aquatic Centre where she loves to exercise. While the quality of instruction for classes has continued to be exemplary, Anne especially enjoys how the new Aquatic Centre has so much to offer outside of swimming: much like a spa, she can lounge in the hot tub after her Aquafit class, relax in the steam room, or unwind in the sauna.
Living at UBCSteven Weisman
Steven moved to UBC nine years ago and is a regular patron of the BirdCoop Fitness Centre and also participates in Fitness Classes to add some new flavour to his daily activity. As an early riser, you’ll often find Steven starting his day off at 6:30 am (with a big smile on his face!) in the BirdCoop.
Tennis NewcomerSyd Kreitzman
Syd has lived in the neighbourhood since before the UBC Tennis Centre was built, and when it was, he decided he wanted to try something new! Since then the Centre has become his home away from home and an integral part of his life – a crucial balancing factor in dealing with the stress of a demanding job and life in general.

Now, a decade later, my knee is much better and still doesn’t need replacing. This is also the only aquatic centre in Vancouver that offers both land and water exercise for seniors classes – which is beneficial for strength development.
