Demolitions

Waste? Resource?

With 6.6 Mio. t, waste from the building industry represents a considerable part of the total waste generated in Austria. Currently, there is only insufficient knowledge of the composition of construction waste. On the one hand, little is known about the freights of potential recyclables which disposed at the landfills with con-struction waste. On the other hand, the freights of pollutants contained in the discharged and recycled con-struction wastes are unknown.

Therewith the quality of the individually waste and recycling fractions, originating from the demolition of buildings, can be increased and controlled in the future. The results are applied in the following main project towards investigation of the demolition of 10 multi level residential buildings, and also as a basis for assessing the environmental compatibility and the resource potential of construction waste.

• Basis for an optimisation of the utilisation of mineral construction wastes by prevention of waste generation or of waste mixing, or by se-lective channelling of pollutants discharged

• Action instructions for the demolition of resid-

ual buildings towards quality optimisation for waste and recyclables.

• Knowledge of eventual contamination sources for mineral construction wastes to enable as-sessment of the possibilities for their utilisation.

• Information on eventual pollutant dispersion

during treatment of construction waste and on non-optimal resource use through landfilling of construction waste.

Recording of the demolition building In a first step, before demolition, the building’s composition is roughly split down into a registering record, and a rough material balance is drawn. The registered record contains the general material composition of the building. Quantity and composi-tion of the basic materials are measured before the demolition. In the rough material balance estimates the path-ways the quantities of the single wastes and recy-clables flows will take. Balancing of the demolition building and the demolition waste processing facility Based on the rough material balance, a detailed balance is prepared. It helps assess the signifi-cance of the output flows for the substances inves-tigated, since at a later stage, no back tracing will

be always possible of the origin of a substance e.g. in a demolition waste processing facility. For the demolition waste processing facility, a specific bal-ance is drawn. The results of the substance flow analysis enable conclusions on the material composition and on the qualitative composition of the single waste frac-tions. By means of the substance flow analysis the sources and processes responsible for the con-tamination can be identified. Recommendations for the demolition Based on the available guidelines, norms, studies and the findings of the V-EnBa project, a policy recommendation for the demolition process is cre-ated. This recommendation will show by which means quantity and quality of the recyclables can be controlled.
