PRESCOTT COLLEGE Newsletter Term 3, Week 6, Friday 31 August, 2018 From the Principal’s Desk... Kinaesthetic learning happens when students learn through physical activity, rather than listening to a lecture or watching demonstrations. As you browse through our newsletter, you will see that our Prescott College community has engaged in kinaesthetic learning over the past two weeks. Tuesday last week we had our annual Cross Country which took place in almost perfect weather conditions and yesterday was our Athletics Carnival that had been postponed from Term 2 due to bad weather; it was unfortunately abandoned at midday due to high winds. Even though we abandoned the Athletics Carnival we were able to catch buses back to the safety of the College and then still enjoy the afternoon completing the tug-o-war on the back field. However, for many people in the world, safety and the choice to withdraw from bad or dangerous situations is not an option. One of the core topics studied by our Year 10 Geography classes is human wellbeing. The class looks at issues that prevent people from living in safe and healthy environments. They identify people and places where water, education, food and medicine is not as accessible as it is here in Australia. Students then study aid organisations that help combat these problems in both developing countries and those affected by natural disasters. In order to make a difference and raise awareness of these issues, the class then promotes the various aid organisations and raise money to support their work. 2 Koonga Ave, Prospect SA 5082 p: 08 8269 1655 f: 08 8344 1391 [email protected] Cross Country 2018

Consequently, last Semester our Year 10R class ran fundraisers for aid organisations and this Semester the Year 10B class is doing the same. Currently they are planning for the following events: Prescott Feud (based on the popular Family Feud), to raise money for children’s education in developing countries for Asian Aid, a bake sale & Taco Tuesday for Save the Children, a food stall for World Vision and a Ping Pong tournament for Water Aid.

It is great to see our students learning by doing; not only in athletics, but by also flexing their social justice muscles to try and make a small but tangible difference to someone else’s life. Interestingly, there is a growing body of secular research that indicates higher levels of wellbeing are connected to those who serve others. As Christians this is no surprise to us, in Matthew chapter 25, verse 40, we are called to serve others.

I know that many parents have supported Prescott students with preparation for these events. I would like to thank you for your support, because home and school working together is essential to building young men and women of strong, positive character.

Successful students are good time managers Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life. An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the number 1 study skills problem for College students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good

excuse-makers. Don’t make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. And don’t wait until

tomorrow to do it!

Cross Country - 21 August 2018It was a warm day, everyone was in good spirits. Everyone lined up for the start of a 5km lap around the Victoria Park Racecourse. There were the serious runners, there were

the joggers, and then there were the walkers. It was a great day all round. Tiara finished first overall, then Hudson and

Max. It’s not all about winning though, at the end of the day, all students made an effort and got their daily dose of

Vitamin D, exercise and most of all FUN! All the more so for the students that were able to pass Mr Charleson!

Have you ever experienced a case of mistaken identity? Perhaps you’ve been bundled up on the street by an overly friendly (or angry) stranger or been accused or complimented for something you didn’t do. I know my young sons get quite annoyed when their names get mixed up, and often voice their preference for being called their real names, not some of the cute pet names we as parents often create. They, like all of us, have a strong desire to be recognised for who they really are.One of Jesus’ most regularly repeated questions was ‘Who do you say I am?’ He wanted people to take the time to consider His true identity, not just as a man, but as God.The historical evidence for the person of Jesus is unarguable – even atheist scholars would agree that an influential man named Jesus existed. His divinity – or that He is in fact God – is what continues to be discussed. But even the evidence for this is difficult to refute. The Bible tells us that Jesus knows who we are, our names and even how many hairs on our heads (Psalm 139, Luke 12:7)The question is, who do we say He is? And, are you willing to consider this Big Question?Want to know more about Jesus’ true identity? Chat with Pr Braden or email [email protected]

Friday Night = Free PizzaThe Pizzas at Surge on Friday Aug 27 were great - but next Friday, Sep 7 they are going to be even better, because

they are free!Surge is a monthly Friday Night program open to all

Prescott students, family and friends. On September 7 we will be blessed by Pr Lachlan Campbell,

from NSW who is in town for the weekend and graciously offered to come and share. He’s great

- but you’ll have to come and see for yourself.

With 50+ students attending Surge each month, it’s a great place to connect, eat

and grow together.

Surge - September 7, 5:00pm - 6:30pm (games after school for

those who need to stay behind).

Multicultural Food ExcursionA group of eleven enthusiastic Year 9 students

joined with Prescott Southern Year 9 Food class of around nine students at the Botanic

Gardens to learn how Aboriginals used plants for food by hunting or collecting.

They then walked to the Asian Food court to explore the Asian cuisine that is popular in Chinatown. They sampled Bubble tea and

were able to choose a meal that they would eat.

Next, they went into the Central markets to explore European cultures and their influence on the diets of Australians. The students were

asked to find the name of the Italian Donut in one of the stalls and also answer some

questions about sustainability in the transport of the local produce to the market.

Poetry in ActionOur Year 8 English and Drama students, along with Year 6 students from Prescott Primary Northern, were treated to a dynamic and energetic performance by 3 actors, from a theatre company called “Poetry in Action”. It inspires students to use words creatively, and that words really do matter. The students were absorbed from start to finish.“Poetry in Action” was a fun and educational show. The actors did an amazing job remembering all their lines. They had a “poets quest” where a guy had to write poetry to win back his girlfriend. It was very funny and the students seemed to enjoy it”. Erika, A very happy Year 6 student

Athletics Carnival - 31 August 2018

On Thursday 30 August we had our Athletics Carnival.

The day started off well with no rain but it was cold with lots of wind, we got most of the events done by 12:00pm and everyone was enjoying themselves.

Around 12:30 the wind picked up and the rain came, with the sand flying out of the sandpits and with the potential dangerous conditions, the teachers decided to call it a day.

We all boarded the buses back to school and to everyone’s delight the tug-of-war was still going ahead, back at campus. We all streamed out the chapel and onto field one to end our day in an exciting fashion. Apart from the rain, I’m sure everyone had a great day and we are all very appreciative of the teachers and everyone behind the scenes that made this all possible. Makayla E, 9R

...Because your child matters

Parent/Teacher InterviewsParents will be given the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers this Monday. There is much value in Parent/Teacher interviews. It symbolises a three-way partnership that exists in a child’s journey through school. When parents and teachers come together it creates a positive relationship that results in everyone working together with the child’s best interests as the priority.

You can book all appointments online through the PTO website. If you need assistance, please contact our office on 8269 1655.

Attention Bus Parents and Students:

We have had a number of students not notifying the Bus Driver when they do not require the bus. Please let the driver know if you do not need the bus in the morning or afternoon. Also, please ensure you are ready for the bus in the mornings.

Intercampus Bus ServicePrescott College provides a complimentary bus service from Prescott Primary Northern (Para Vista) to the College each morning and back to the Primary School again in the afternoon. For more information about the bus service, please contact Mrs Robson at [email protected]

Pupil Free DayThe Royal Show is on and we’re giving the students a day off to go and enjoy it - on Wednesday 5 September.
