y ContractorIn a traditional building contract, the building contractor isemployed by the owner to construct a building according tothe plans and specifications prepared by the owner'sarchitect.

The contractor has a direct contractual relationship withthe owner and will then enter into sub-contracts with otherbuilders who will carry out the work. If the employer isallowed to choose who will be the sub-contractors, thesesub-contractors are called 'nominated sub-contractors'. Inother building contracts, the main contractor will beresponsible to select the sub-contractors who are called'domestic sub-contractors'.

Types of foundation system used

on the sitey Type of foundation system used in the site was pad

footing based on the land structure.

yThis type of foundation uses Reinforcement Concretepiling measured 125mm by 125mm during theconstruction.

Page 13: Presentation Site Visit

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/presentation-site-visit 13/43

y Further explanation on Pad Foundation

It is a structure reinforced concrete slab that support a

number of columns distributed in both horizontaldirections or that supports uniform pressure as fromtank.

Page 14: Presentation Site Visit

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/presentation-site-visit 14/43

y Un-reinforcement pad foundation

y The design method of un-reinforcement and

reinforcement concrete pad foundation is similar inprinciple to those described in the preceding pages forstrip foundation. Thus the minimum size of the pad isgiven by the practical requirement of being able toexcavate by hand to the requirement depth and level

off the bottom and to lay brick or fix steel wood for thecolumns. The thickness of Un-reinforcement concretepad foundation is given by the necessity of preventingdevelopment of tension on the underside of the baseor reducing it to a small value. The consideration fordetermining the choice of stepped or slopingfoundation or a plain rectangular section are the sameas those describe for strip foundation

y Reinforced pad foundation

y Parameter:

y Method of design is as follow:y Determine the base area of the foundation by dividing

the total loads of the column and base by the allowablebearing pressure on the soil.

y Determine the overall depth of the foundation requiredby punching shear, based on the column loads.

y Select the type of foundation to be used, i.e. simple slab, sloping upper surface. Assume dimension of the slope.

y Check the dimension by computing beam shear stress at

critical section, on the basics that diagonal shearreinforcement should not be provided.

y Compute bending moment and design thereinforcement.

Page 16: Presentation Site Visit

8/8/2019 Presentation Site Visit

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/presentation-site-visit 16/43

y Check bond stresses in steel.

y Calculation of required thickness of pad to resist

punching shear.y Continuous pad and beam foundation

y This foundation is a row of column as a row of padfoundation with only a joint between each pad.Continuous beam foundation may be required to bridge

over weak pockets in the soil or to prevent excessivedifferential settlement between adjacent columns. Theadvantages of using this foundation are ease of excavation by backhoe or other machine; any formworkrequired can be fabricated and assembled in longer

lengths; and there is improve continuity and ease of access for concreting the foundation; added advantageof providing strip foundation for panel walls of theground floor of multi-story framed building.

Construction plant and equipment

use on the sitey Dump Truck

y

A dump truck is a truck used for transporting loosematerial (such as sand, gravel, or dirt) for construction. A typical dump truck is equipped with a hydraulically operated open-box bed hinged at the rear, the front of  which can be lifted up to allow the contents to be deposited

on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. Inthe UK and Australia the term applies to off-roadconstruction plant only, and the road vehicle is known as atipper, tipper lorry or tip truck.

y Crane

A crane is a lifting machine, generally equipped witha winder (also called a wire rope drum), wire ropes orchains and sheaves, that can be used both to lift andlower materials and to move them horizontally. It uses

one or more simple machines to create mechanicaladvantage and thus move loads beyond the normalcapability of a human. Cranes are commonly employedin the transport industry for the loading and

unloading of freight, in the construction industry forthe movement of materials and in the manufacturingindustry for the assembling of heavy equipment.

y ExcavatorsExcavators are heavy equipment consisting of a boom, bucket and cab on a rotating platform (known as the"house"). The house sits atop an undercarriage with

tracks or wheels. All movement and functions of theexcavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, be it with rams or motors. Their designis a natural progression from the steam shovel

y Tilting Drum

A concrete mixer (also commonly called a cementmixer) is a device that homogeneously combinescement, aggregate such as sand or gravel, and water toform concrete. A typical concrete mixer uses arevolving drum to mix the components. For smaller

volume works portable concrete mixers are often usedso that the concrete can be made at the constructionsite, giving the workers ample time to use the concretebefore it hardens. An alternative to a machine ismixing concrete or cement by hand. This is usually done in a wheelbarrow; however, several companieshave recently begun to sell modified tarps for thispurpose.

Ready-Mix Concrete Truck

y Ready-mix concrete is usually delivered by trucks with rotatingdrum mixers. Drum mixer trucks are designed with a pair of blades that spin one way to mix the concrete, and then can spinthe opposite direction to release the mixture. Although mostconcrete mixer trucks discharge concrete from the back, newertrucks feature front-discharge chutes. These front-discharge

trucks require less maneuvering to place the concrete in thecorrect location.

y Types of plant mixers include: tilt drum mixer, horizontal shaftmixers, pan mixers and slurry mixers. Tilt drum mixers are themost common and are known for their efficiency. Horizontal

shaft mixers are good for producing higher-quality concreteproducts because of their powerful blending capabilities.

2. Pillingy Reinforcement Concrete Pile ( RC Pile )

Pile are relative long and slender members used totransmit loads through soil strata having a high bearingcapacity to deeper soil or rock strata having a high bearingcapacity. Also used in normal soil to resist heavy uplift

forces or in poor soil conditions to resist horizontal loads.Classification - if the stratum for foundation piles is a hardand relatively impenetrable material such as rock or a very dense sand and gravel, the piles derive most of theircarrying capacity from the resistance of the stratum at thetoe of the pile. Having decided that piling is necessary, theengineer must make a choice from a Varity of types andsizes. It has already been noted that there is usually only one type of pile which is satisfactory for any particular siteconditions.

3. Foundationy Pad foundation

It is a structure reinforced concrete slab that support anumber of columns distributed in both horizontaldirections or that supports uniform pressure as from tank.

y Pile caps

Design for pile caps - pile caps must therefore be of ampledimension to allow them to accommodate piles whichdeviate from their intended position. The pile caps shouldbe deep enough to ensure stability against lateral forces.Minimum pile for isolate pile group should at least 3 piles.

A pile cap with 2 piles should be connected to the tie beamsto adjacent caps. The heads of reinforcement concrete pilesshould be strip down and the projection reinforcementbonded into the pile cap to give the required bond length.
