President’s Blog by Ray “Bruce Blank” Marshall Once again I have been called into action to fill in for our President. This time he called in sick, a valid excuse. It was a change from the usual “work” excuse. This would have been Bruce’s last meeting as President because after the banquet we turn the reins over to Denis Boulanger because he lost the election and the booby prize was to become our 2017 President. After we got the wiring with the speaker system sorted out, we were ready to go. The threat of rain did not dampen the January attendance much, but Gary Uchino did not bring his new 2016 White Convertible out in the almost rain. I saw him and the car at the golf course so I knew he got it. Gary wrote an article about his new car and it is in this newsletter. I asked Gary if he got a top with the car because in his case it is almost a waste of money because he rarely uses the top. (He did get one). He has an ad in this newsletter for selling his yellow car and it states that the top is “rarely used.” Bruce had in his notes about how being President has been a rewarding experience for him. He mentioned that Denis takes over next month and we should give him a hard time. For our annual PCC charity drive the club sent out checks to our selected charities, $435 each. Once again I have been called into action to fill in for our President. This time he called in sick, a valid excuse. It was a change from the usual “work” excuse. The awards banquet will be held on January 21st at the Talega Golf Club in San Clemente. By the time this newsletter gets out the event will be barking at the door. We hope everyone attends. John Iest introduced us to three guys who showed up to see our organization up front and personal. We welcomed them to the club meeting even though none of them had a yellow car to replace Gary Uchino’s yellow car. We went through the rest of the meeting. We didn’t vote anyone new into the club, Joe still has money in treasury, Judy still has stuff in the store and if you have money you can get some stuff. Dave Hennings thanked all for the pictures posted on the website, and Nancy thanked the folks who contributed articles to the newsletter. She also distributed simple questions to the members about their Corvette life and also has sent out questionnaires to the board members so we can get some information on those folks. The results of her questions should be in this newsletter if all goes well. Bruce says “that’s all folks.” Save the Wave.

Message from John Iest:

As you know from the last PCC meeting I reported about Bruce Blank’s health.

The doctors decided to take PET scans and found that he has cancer in the liver. He has been referred to UCLA for more tests before deciding what options to take. Pat says it will probably take 2-3 weeks before we know anything more.

Bruce looks and feels fine now but we know he has a significant disease to overcome. Keep your thoughts and prayers coming for both of them for the long and difficult road ahead.

Fond Farewell to Robin Woods

PCC says “Good Bye” to longtime member Robin Woods.

Although it is time for her to move on from the club, we will

always remember the sparkle & humor she brought to our

meetings, the many times she was fined for being late and of

course, the wonderful events she hosted for well over 18

years. Robin brought us many great weekends in Palm Springs,

when we would all gather at “Hair of the Dog” to watch the

Kentucky Derby. Robin also hosted her well attended event every summer at the

Laguna Playhouse: a cocktail party & musical in a beautiful setting. Thank you,

Robin, for all you’ve done for PCC. We will surely miss you. It’s been a pleasure

knowing you.

If you have a suggestion, let me know and we will see if we can put it together. Just remember to let me know in advance so we don’t have conflicts between events. January Events:

is an outdoor evening event, we will

resume Food Court Friday Night in a

couple of months, when the weather is

more cooperative.

Greetings racers, race fans, and the rest of you PCC’ers that somewhere not too far below the surface wish that you could do something more with your Corvette than on-street caravans and trips to the grocery store. Come on guys, you are driving “THE” American sports car. It’s designed to go fast both in a straight line and around a corner. When it comes to racing PCC really needs to step up. More than half of the Las Vegas Corvette Club membership participates in some kind of racing event, and it’s a big club too. In our club, I think there are 5 of us at best. So, here comes the 2017 racing season. Join us, get involved and let’s have some serious fun! When it comes to racing Corvettes you have a lot of choices. It’s just about what you are comfortable doing (and possibly your tire budget). For most of us, racing opportunities break into 5 categories: Low speed autocross, high speed open track days on major road courses, Road rallying, standing mile (or 1.5 mile in the case of the Mojave Magnum) and drag racing. There are opportunities for all of these here in Southern California. Your best source for nearby race events is www.motorsportreg.com. Just filter by your preference. For drag racing your best bet is the street legal drags at Auto Club Speedway. They happen every month starting in March and we have organized club participation there before. Count on it again. I’ll be teeing up a drag event at Fontana for the club on April 22nd. Unfortunately, The Mojave Mile events for 2017 have been cancelled for no clear reason. They are threatening to resume in 2018. We shall see. Now for autocross: This is probably the safest way to really test your skills without the danger (and visceral thrill) of higher speeds found on the open track. Don’t discount it though, even though you rarely get out of 2nd gear there is a whole lot of thrill and challenges to your driving skills to be had. The SCCA SoCal region autocross season kicks off January 14th & 15th at Fontana. SCCA autocross features a longer layout, usually around a mile, and highly technical features. If you want to campaign a car and go for points and year-end awards and qualification for national events you certainly can, but you need to become an SCCA member, register with and get a car number from the region, class your vehicle so you know who to compete against, and pretty much show up to compete every month. I’ve done it and it’s a blast, but it does take a commitment and a lot of tires. However, if you just want to have some fun now and then and not deal with all the formal stuff, you have a really cool option. Every SCCA championship autocross is held on a Sunday, but they are always preceded by a practice event on Saturdays at the same location on the same course (you run the

_____________________________________________________________________________________

other direction Sunday). All you need to do is go to http://www.motorsportreg.com and sign up for the practice, then just show up. If you are not an SCCA member you can buy a weekend membership when you check in. They have track walks for beginners and you can usually find a free instructor too. You can find SCCA autocross events usually twice per month: SoCal region at Autoclub and the San Diego region at Qualcomm stadium’s parking lot. Sign up early though, the practice sessions do fill up. If you want to try autocross on an easier, shorter layout, Speedventures sponsors events on the same weekends they do open track at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. Just register on motorsportreg.com, show up and run. There are also things you can do easily to make your car faster and handle better in an autocross environment, particularly if you own a C5 ZO6, I can help with that, but you don’t have to do anything just to come out and have fun blasting through a sea of cones. It’s almost impossible to hurt yourself or your car. Any car, any tires, any set-up, just as long as it’s safe. All you need to do is pass a tech inspection and have an approved helmet (and they usually have loaner spares available if you don’t have one). Corvettes do very, very well on the autocross track at every level. Give it a try, you may just get bit by the bug. If you are now thinking about autocross, you have a unique opportunity coming up to really improve your driving skills, both on and off the track. The Evolution Performance driving school will be holding an autocross training program for all levels of experience at Qualcomm stadium in San Diego on Friday March 3rd. This is a three hour school and you will get something on the order of 15 runs with National Champion Caliber instructors. It’s $90 and worth every penny. I’ve done it before and plan on going again. Please let me know if you would like to join me. As always, sign up at www.motorsportreg.com. Next month: Back to the track and road rally opportunities for Corvettes in SoCal. Catch me if you can…….

Many have asked about upcoming racing events, so I will provide a schedule each month along with this “Racer’s Corner” Column. I would be happy to be PCC’s “Racing Coordinator.” Upcoming Track Events: Jan 21-22 Speedventures Autoclub Speedway (Fontana) Roval course $199 http://www.speedventures.com/ Feb 4th Speedventures The Streets of Willow Springs $149 Feb 11-12 Speedventures Chuckwalla Valley Raceway $189 Feb 18-19 Speedventures Autoclub Speedway (Fontana) Rival course $199 Feb 25 Speedventures Willow Springs Road Course $179 March 4-5 West Coast Racing Willow Springs Road Course $260 (for both days) www.westcoastracing.com Several club members are likely going to this event. The web site isn't up to date yet but will be soon for registration. We can coordinate hotel/caravan etc. at the February meeting. Autocross Events: Jan 15 SCCA Autoclub Speedway West Parking lot http://www.motorsportreg.com/ Jan 21-22 Speedventures Autoclub Speedway inside lot www.speedventures.com Feb 18 PCA Qualcom Stadium Feb 18-19 Speedventures Autoclub Speedway inside lot March 3 SCCA The Evolution Performance Driving School (autocross). Qualcom Stadium Some club members have expressed interest in this event. If you want to go, register early, it fills up. $90 www.motorsportreg.com April 7-9 SCCA El Toro Runway The 2017 Tirerack El Toro Pro Solo. This is a national level event with some of the best drivers in the country. It takes a lot to compete, but it's worth going out just to watch for a bit if you can (and it's free). Side by side autocross racing with a drag start into mirrored courses. Sunday has a round robin shoot-out.

Christmas morning dawned clear, bright and cool. As we loaded up Santa’s sleigh (aka,

our jeep) for the short drive to have Christmas breakfast with our little grand-daughter,

London, we were so very excited. We were transporting to her the first Corvette she

would own.

Now, since she is only 18 months old, you might think we were jumping the gun a little,

however, a girl’s first car is important. It can set a precedent for all future automotive

purchases. At least we hope so. You just have to start her down the right road from

the get go.

The car is a Fisher Price Power Wheels electric model with a 6 volt rechargeable

battery. Since she is such a girly girl, we chose the white 2017 model with pink wheels

and a pink seat. Other kids on the block have electric cars but she has the first

Corvette.

She is still a little hesitant about the car, though she does like to sit in it with her polka

dot co-pilot giraffe. It’s got a lot of power for an 18 month old girl and it makes real

engine noises. It travels at a whopping three miles per hour! Watch out Danica Patrick.

London might just be giving you a run for your money one of these days

When she posed for pictures in her daddy’s driveway, she sure got a lot of attention

from the pre-school set. I’m sure she has a future on the neighborhood preschool race

circuit.

As Newsletter Editor, I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a different idea

for an article in a month where we had no club events to report on, except for Ken

James’ “Kick Tires.” Since asking members to submit articles often doesn’t work, I

decided I wanted a way to have an article that would include input from a large number

of our members. Thus, I came up with Five Easy Questions. I printed out my

questions and passed them out at our January meeting for each couple or member to

answer. I had thirty-eight responses and as I read through them, I had a huge smile

on my face. I hit a goldmine! The answers were illuminating and a joy to read. They

covered the gamut from funny, thoughtful, silly, creative and heartfelt. Please read on

for the results of this very scientific survey.

Question #1: Describe your Corvette in one word. Be creative.

“Awesome” was used several times. Others reacted with: intimidating, exhilarating,

encompassing, superlative, unbelievable, satisfaction, beautiful, fun and dreamcar.

Others used: hot, cool, sexy, fast, animal, badass, HotMama, Novia & “silver bullets.”

More creative minds made up their own words: “blu-ful, supertastic, potentialistic,

fantastico, fazt and Fuddruckish.”

Finally, these simple answers said it all: “project,” “mine” and “Penny’s.”

Question #2: The best color for a Corvette is ______________.

You’ll never guess. The overwhelming response was “red,” with black coming in a

distant second. (I can’t believe so many people got this wrong when the obvious

answer was .) A few souls were diplomatic with “whatever I’m driving,” “any

color,” “all colors” and “the color you like” as their response.

My favorite answer was “painted.”

Question #3: I could live without ________ but I couldn’t live without my Corvette.

Thank goodness this was an anonymous survey since five people could live without

their wife, other half or spouse! One could live without beautiful women. (I don’t know

if that includes his wife.) Another could live without his wife’s Vette.

Many people would really sacrifice themselves by living without broccoli, spinach, taxes,

DJT, sharp pain, almond roca, a neighbor and work. Others would give up

alcohol/wine, ice cream, coffee, burgers, dining out and TV. Two could give up other

vehicles – a Prius or an El Camino. Our hardcore members could live without eating,

sleeping, money or their house. One could even live without their pacemaker!

Question #4: When driving my Corvette, I feel __________.

Here we have some vivid descriptions on what it’s like to drive a Corvette. Some liken

it to being a race car driver or a jet pilot. Driving made others feel exhilarated, rowdy,

wild, excited, sassy and sexy. Quite a few feel comfortable, safe, relaxed, very

satisfied, proud and in control. “Like everyone’s looking at us” is a great feeling.

Someone else feels “single” …. hmm. Who is “ready for a rebuild?”

Question #5: Describe PCC in five words or less.

You could tell that many thought long & hard before putting their feelings about Pacific

Coast Corvettes into a few words. There were many “F-Words” in the descriptions:

Fun, Fast, Friends, Friendly, Friendship and Family. What a great testament to our

club. The word “great” was also prevalent. Here is a sampling of heartfelt quotes from

our members. Wouldn’t it be nice to post some on our website?

How “great” are we? “Great Place to Meet People” “Great Comradery” “Great People

with Great Cars” “Great Group of Friends” “Great Club, Adventurous, Great People”

“The Members are Great” and “Consists of Great People.” Let’s pat ourselves on the

back.

Our club is also known for being very welcoming and social. Now we begin with the

aforementioned “F-Words.”

“Fellowship, Fun, Family, Knowledge, Helpfulness” “Best Car Makes Best Friends”

“Best Friendly Club Ever” “Friends, Families, Fast Cars” “Fun, Friends, Activities, Wine &

Laughs” “Fun Friends Good Times” “Crazy Fun Bunch of People” “Team Friendship”

“Wonderful Fun with Like Friends” “Fun Friends Family Great Events” “Fast,Red & Fun”

“Supportive Inclusive Dynamic Creative Friendly” “Socializing, Friendships, Club Events,

Eating/Drinking” “Great Folks to Hang With” “Makes Driving a Corvette Fun” and

“One Bloody Fantastic Club, Friendly.” “Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic

Fantastic.”

Here are some of the more unique comments. “Close to My House” “A Lot of Old Folks”

“Alive” and “Nice Folks with a Car Problem.” The final two said it all:

“Authentic Group That Loves Corvettes” and “The Best Thing I’ve Ever Done.”

Thank you to all who participated in this venture. You are more creative than you

think!

It's hard to keep a secret.

A week before Christmas, I got a new 2016 Stingray Convertible. 2LT, Automatic with select ride. White with black interior. The dealer gave me a 90 minute presentation on the electronics. The car was delivered

top down. $60,200 out the door.

The first time I pulled in to get gas, I couldn't find the gas cover release. I read the manual but it had no information on the gas cover release. I was about to call OnStar when I remembered Joyce's car didn't have a release, so I decided to get out and try pushing on the cover. For future owners of a C7, there is no gas cover release. The cover is locked and unlocked automatically with

the door. Also, there is no gas cap.

The features I like most are the cooled and heated seats, Android Auto and 3 front facing cameras. I replaced the radiator supports twice on my old car.

As Ken James says: "when you buy a Corvette you're just getting a starter kit.” So far I have installed clear bra, ordered a wind screen and enrolled in the Ron Fellows Corvette driving school (new corvette owners get $1,500 off the regular $2,500 price). Joyce will be joining me at the school. They said Joyce would be able to attend all the sessions. The only difference for her would be that she would ride with an instructor rather than

drive on the track.

I'm looking for chrome wheel exchange or having my wheels and calipers painted. Any referrals for these services

would be appreciated.

My yellow 2006 is now for sale at $16,000 or best offer. Please contact me at 714-746-4279 for details.

Introducing ….. Our 2017 PCC Board Denis Boulanger/President I grew up in Cumberland, RI. I went to the University of Rhode Island undergraduate school and University of Massachusetts for graduate school in engineering. I lived in the western Boston suburbs for almost 30 years before taking a job transfer to California almost 8 years ago. I met Leslie online when I moved to California. We live in Lake Forest. We went to our first PCC meeting in August 2010 and

became members in January 2011. Over the years, I was Historian and then Vice President. I always wanted a Vette. It started after seeing the C1 in the television show Route 66 and then growing up, one of my friends’ mothers had a C2 convertible. When I was older, costs for my children’s education and then my daughter’s wedding got in the way. I bought my first Corvette (2009 Artic White C6 Coupe 4LT Z51) brand new in May 2010. Mark Collins (also a PCC member) is my next door neighbor. I was tired of drooling over his C6 so I had to go buy my own. When I mentioned to Leslie that I was going to look at Vettes, her only request was that I not buy one in either of 2 colors. My first Vette was the 2009 C6. While I was PCC Vice President, I sold it for personal reasons in May 2013. I almost had to leave PCC due to a bylaw change after I sold my C6. (If you don’t own a Corvette, you can’t be in the club now). I purchased my current Vette 3 days before the vote on the bylaw change. I was looking for a brand new 4LT 60th Anniversary Grand Sport. Since it was 2014, I could not find one in California. I found one in Oklahoma and negotiated a very good deal. When the salesman found out I lived in California, he said he couldn’t sell it to me. (He suggested if I had a friend in Arizona, buy the car, register it there and 6 months later bring it into California as a used car). Since I couldn’t find a new one, I started looking for a used one with low miles. I was not looking for a Z06 but then I saw my car. My daily driver is now a 2011 C6 Z06 with the Z07 performance package and the color is Supersonic Blue. It has the 3LZ options package because the Z06 does not have a 4LZ package. I bought it in August 2014 with 15,000 mile on it. It now has over 55,000 miles. I love driving that car. My hobbies are photography, wine tasting and an occasional golf game if I get lucky. I really enjoy PCC and look forward to being your President for the next 2 years. Remember, the club is for all of us. If you have an idea how to make it better please talk to me or anyone else on the board.

Ray Marshall/Vice President I grew up in Carle Place, Long Island, New York. In high school I did the normal stuff: football, wrestling, and track. At the end of high school I went on to junior college to study aircraft operation. My intention was to be a pilot in the Marines. About 1 year into it my father, who worked for United Air Lines, came home and said “we’re moving to Hawaii.” I said “good!” He said, “not you.”

I was then on my own. I got my pilot’s license and graduated. After graduation I transferred to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo to study Aviation Engineering. While I was there, my number came up too high for the draft and the war was basically over so there was an excess of pilots. After college my girlfriend in New York (not Nancy) got me a room in Bay Shore, NY. The room was just down the road from the drug store where Nancy worked. You can probably figure out what happened then (see Nancy’s article for hints). I was working in a lumber yard when Fairchild Republic won the contract for the A-10. Shortly thereafter I found out I had married the boss’s daughter and he got me a job. Yada Yada Yada and it was time to buy a new car for my daily commute from Irvine to Long Beach. I have always liked sports cars so I decided to buy a Camaro. As I started to look, I realized that what I wanted was not a Camaro but a Corvette. I couldn’t afford a new Vette so in 2000 I bought a 1995 yellow 6-speed Corvette coupe. 17 years later I am on my third yellow 6-speed coupe. I put 100k miles on my ’95, and 100k miles on my 2003 Z06 and decided that that was too hard on a car so I bought a 2008 Z06 and retired. For PCC, I have been President, VP (twice), Newsletter Editor (twice) and Awards Chair.

Nancy Marshall/Editor I grew up in Bay Shore, on Long Island in New York. Since 1962, I have been a diehard NY Mets fan. In June of 1971, I met Ray Marshall. Although he was a Yankees fan, he “swept me off my feet” and we became engaged in October and married that December. It’s hard to believe that was 45 years ago! In 1987, Ray was hired by McDonnell Douglas and he dragged me off to points unknown: California. We loaded up

the “Green Monster,” our Suburban, with three kids and two tanks of gerbils. Ray likened us to the “Beverly Hillbillies.” We bought a home in Irvine and have lived here ever since.

After Ray bought his first yellow Corvette, we joined PCC in January 2001. About five years ago, I bought my first Corvette, a beautiful 2006 Monterrey Red C-6 that I was seduced by at a PCC Casino Night. I bought it from PCC members Ed & Judy Baumgarten, so I knew it had been lovingly cared for. Besides my current board position as editor, I was also secretary for two years. For several years, I was the manager of SuperCrown Bookstore in Irvine. After I was burned out by working retail, I got a 9-5 job as office manager of an audiology/hearing aid office, where I worked for twenty years. Two years ago, I retired and am now enjoying ‘the good life” with Ray, taking road trips and train trips. All three of our kids and six grandkids are in southern California. I am an avid reader and enjoy doing crossword puzzles. My current passion is wooden jigsaw puzzles. I like to say that besides getting married & having our kids, the best thing we’ve ever done is join PCC.

Judy Nunn/PCC Club Store I was born in Long Beach, CA and moved to Anaheim when I was 2 years old. I lived in the same home until I moved to San Francisco for a couple of years before I returned to Orange County. We live in Laguna Hills in the home we bought 40 years ago!! We love our Prop 13 tax rate and don't plan to move until we go "toes up!”

We joined PCC when Gail Latimer was President and went to Big Bear as our first club outing. Tom has wanted a Corvette since he was 16 years old. We had the money saved to buy a used Corvette, but we wanted a larger home when our second child was born. Then our daughter needed braces, so after Tom retired and we sold our second home at the Colorado River, we bought a used 2000 Torch Red Coupe and joined PCC shortly thereafter. Unfortunately our 2000 didn't have seat heaters so one day I said let’s go look at new corvettes, resulting in our purchase of a new 2012 Torch Red Grand Sport with seat heaters and lots of other goodies. We sold our 2000 to fellow club member, Barbara Morton! We love our Corvette and do not have plans to replace her! I'm a quilter and crafter so I keep busy with my Quilt Guild and many other Quilting groups. We both love nice wines and love the wine country in Napa and Paso Robles. Fortunately, our children and their spouses love wine too - so we like to explore new wineries and wines with them. We love to travel, one of my previous careers was as a travel agent for 14 years (many, many years ago) and I've never lost the travel bug. We love cruises and Hawaii and all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, so if we aren't at a meeting we are probably on an adventure.

Dave Hennings/Historian I was born in Denison, Iowa in 1951 and moved to California in 1962. Lived in Hawthorne for 1 year and moved to Cypress in 1963. Graduated from Kennedy High school in La Palma in 1969. I went to Cal State Fullerton for one year and Cypress College and received a 2 year degree. I started working at Alpha Beta Markets in 1971 which later became

Ralphs Grocery where I stayed for 42 years and retired in 2013. I now live in Anaheim Hills, in the same house for 40 years. I have been married for 44 years to Sue whom I met in high school. I joined Pacific Coast Corvettes in April of 2014. Historian is my first board position. I have learned a lot this past year with the help of Dave McCue and Ted Sickles. My current Corvette is my first but I had always wanted one. After I retired it became more practical. It is a 2014 C-7 that I bought on December 31, 2013. I have enjoyed going on club outings especially the drags in Fontana and Cambria. My hobbies include golf, a sport fan of football and hockey, love fishing (especially marlin fishing in Cabo San Lucas) and love to travel which we have done frequently since we retired. I have a twin brother who lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where I visit every year.

Henry Lewis/Sgt. At Arms

I was born in Rosenheim, Germany and came to America in 1957. I still have a sister living in Germany. I was raised in Tucson, Arizona and moved between Arizona and California several times for the Government. We have lived in Las Flores, Ca. since December 1995. This is an unincorporated area located between Rancho Santa Margarita and Ladera Ranch. I retired from The Department of Homeland Security

in January 2007, after 30 years with INS/DHS and retired as the Assistant Regional Director for the Western Region. Currently I am the Project Manger for a private security company that has a contract with DHS/ICE to provide detention and transport services in California. Current staff is 140 and I will be adding approximately 30 more in early 2017. I first joined PCC around 1999, after I purchased my 1998 C-5. My first Corvette was a 1976 White with Camel interior. I purchased the corvette from a guy in Arizona who needed money to pay the IRS. I always said one day I would own a corvette. My current corvette is our fourth. We have had a 1976, 1998, 2005 and 2015. As a retired Federal Law Enforcement officer, I still love to target practice and of course to show my corvette at car shows.

Gene & Vickie Insley Awards Co-Chairs We both grew up in small towns in northwestern Illinois about a 100 miles west of Chicago. We met in high school and have been a team ever since. Vickie went into nursing and worked in the field during our early years of marriage

but eventually focused on our three children. She went back to college when our oldest son started college, fortunately for both, not at the same school. I became an engineer and initially worked at General Electric and after a short stint with Robershaw Controls I joined the toy business with Fisher Price in 1980. After the merger with Mattel in 1994 we moved to Mission Viejo where we currently make our home. We have been modern day “Gypsies” as employment has taken us (in order) from Illinois, to Michigan, Tennessee, New York, Ohio, California, Hong Kong and back to CA. I had always wanted a Corvette since driving a neighbor’s beat up ’61 while in school and of course growing up watching Route 66 each week. We acquired our first Corvette when we moved to CA, a white 95 which was actually a company car that I justified as I could drive it year round due to our mild winters. As we all know we can of course justify almost anything when it comes to Corvettes. That purchase progressed to a red 99 convertible and onto our current blue C7. The 99 actually sat in our garage for the better part of 6 years while we lived in Hong Kong. We attended our first PCC meeting in Dec of 2008 and obtained enough points to sneak through in a close vote for membership in mid-2009. I’ve served as President for 2 years and we have both greatly enjoyed the group. Some of our best friendships have been made through PCC and I have frequently commented that the real glue that has kept PCC together since 1989 is the friendships we all make. Most of our attention is now focused on our children and particularly our granddaughter Tessa who just turned 10. She and her parents live in Sonoma County and our oldest son lives in Seattle so we spend a fair amount of time traveling between these outposts. We feel we have been quite fortunate to have experienced a pretty adventurous life together as we have been able to travel the world, experience wide variations of cultures and make friends from around the world which truly broadens ones opportunities and understanding.

Joe Gildner/Treasurer Barb and I grew up a few blocks from each other in mid-city New Orleans and met when I was 15 and she was 14. We lived in the area until 1989 when my company transferred me to Tustin and we bought a house in Laguna Niguel where we lived until 2002. We now live in San Clemente. Ken James saw us at our first car show ever with our 64 resto

rod and gave us a card. We looked up the club online and attended a meeting. It was I think about 8-10 yrs. ago. I have been on a number of boards over the years including professional, personal and civic including the Indian Guides, San Clemente and Dana Point Boaters Association. I fell in love with Vette's when I saw a white 1960 in the showroom when my dad bought his first new car which was a blue and white 60 Impala. It had a big back seat. I worked at many jobs as a youth and had a few old cars including a 1931 Ford Vicky with a Cad. engine that did not run. I drag raced a number of low horse power cars until my parents and I put in to buy a 1960 beat up red Corvette with a 292 engine and 4-speed that I took to college and later raced. I put every dollar I made during summers into that car and eventually had to tow it to races and to house to house after we married. Barb helped me strip the many layers of old paint off the car until I could paint it black prime. I sold it part by part when we had that car killer KIDS. We did not own a Corvette until approx. 2000 when I saw an ad for a 64 in Colorado. We flew up there and bought a wrecked front and rear car that ran pretty good. Took 7 years to finish the car which I did mostly myself. It has won many awards including second in class at the Grand National Roadster Show. When we joined the club we needed a much more friendly driver and bought a 2003 coupe that we love. It has been driven many places and raced at the drags, open track and autocross. I now have 6 Corvettes and have to make up for lost time in not having one for so long. I do not enjoy but play golf with some of the club members who delight in beating me. I build and work on my cars, have a boat in the harbor that I also work on and enjoy fishing. We are members in the Dana Point Yacht Club. I also raced motorcycles in the south many years ago and follow the sport with my sons who also race. We enjoy the club and meet many great friends.

John Iest/Hospitality

I was born in Ontario, CA. and raised in Chino, CA. on a dairy farm. I have 3 brothers and two sisters. I worked on the dairy and also the farm where we raised our own feed for the cows. I also milked cows but didn’t like it. All my brothers and sister went into the dairy business except me. After graduating from Chino High School I went to Cal Poly in Pomona and got a degree in electronic engineering. My first

job after graduation was with TRW in which I designed control systems for spacecraft. In 1976 I founded my own company in which we design and manufacture products for companies. I joined PCC in 2003 and was secretary for two years. I bought my first Corvette in 1991 which was a 1989. I had always wanted a Corvette. I’ve always liked fast cars and like working on them, but I wasn’t sure if I should get one because I had a family and the Corvette wasn’t family friendly. I brought my 10 year old son to the dealership as I was just “looking.” He ended up falling asleep on the showroom couch as the salesman and I haggled over price for 4 hours. I still have this red car and it has been modified a lot. The next Corvette I purchased was a new 2009 Atomic Orange. I enjoy working on cars, building electronic gadgets, working around the yard and snow skiing. *See next month’s newsletter for more board members’ stories.*

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the

Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?

Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters?
