Clifton resident Kay Corbett has recently published a new book available on Amazon

and Kindle: Calla Lilies: A True Story of Four Sisters and Their Struggle to Survive

Abuse, Addiction, and Poverty. (The cover picture was taken at her home on Clifton

Road.) Conversations with the sisters from 1994-2002 reveal surprising events in

real-time; their lively and impassioned comments read like a novel but are absolutely

true. Also at the heart of this memoir is a touching love story of four sisters and their

stepmother from a previous marriage. The book covers many relevant social issues.

Kay would be happy to discuss her book at book clubs and other local groups. Her

website is www.callaliliesatruestory.com.

Historic Clifton

It was just past Valentine’s Day in 1910, when the “Fairfax Herald” learned of changes in the

Town of Clifton. In spite of chilly weather, it seems the young boys were behaving mischievously and

precariously. The Masons, however were busy in town and enjoyed a particularly delightful trip to

Richmond, Virginia. A “new comer” on Saturdays promised to bring much of the town male population

into “go to Sunday Meetin’” refinement! And note: the happy expectancy of “Paradise Springs”!

See what changes were occurring in the Town that were note-worthy in the late winter of 1910!

Lynne Garvey Hodge, Fairfax County History Commission

“Mr. Felix von Brieson has sold his farm near Clifton, and moved with his family to El Paso, Texas

where they will in the future reside. We regret losing them very much, as they are enterprising and good

people.

Clifton was well represented in Richmond last week when the Grand Lodge of Masons held their

annual convention. Messrs. A. J. Kidwell, R. W. Woodyard, Oscar Woody and Mr. Mantiply reported

having had an excellent time, as they were royally entertained.

James Wilson has accepted a position with the post office in Nokesville.

Misses Iona and Ruth Mathers entertained the young folk at their home about a half mile from

Clifton, on Tuesday night of last week. Refreshments were served at a reasonable hour, and all had a

good time. The girls here certainly know how to keep the blues away.

The Western Union Camp car has moved to Fairfax, after a two weeks stay here, repairing the line,

putting in poles, etc.

Misses Beulah and Effie Adams speak highly of the efficiency of the music department at Eastern

College.

The Paradise Springs Co. will soon have their building complete, where up-to-date machinery will

be installed. We are glad that such pure water will soon find its way to the market. Mr. Bob Evans of

Manassas, has the contract.

The practice of the boys jumping on and off moving trains here is a dangerous one, and should be

stopped.

We are glad to see Mr. Cook out after two weeks of sickness.

Mr. T. A. Ayre, our popular agent here, is out looking as well as usual, after being housed up all

winter.

Miss Georgia Marshall is visiting her mother, Mrs. J. M. Fulmer, on Main Street.

Page 6: President’s Corner DATES FOR YOUR CALENDAR!cliftonva.org/sites/default/files/March Clatter Final.pdf · Abuse, Addiction, and Poverty. (The cover picture was taken at her home on

We regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Mollie Dade Kincheloe, wife of R. S. Kincheloe, well known

in the country, living in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Mrs. Otis is still confined to her home at “Cold Point” with the gripe.

I think the “young lady across the way” is mistaken about the boys not being liberal.

It seems too bad that some of the parents here do not take advantage of the excellent school facilities

and send their boys. The “old story” letting the opportunity go by, “the mill can not grind with the water

that is past.”

Rev. W. H. Edwards preached a very helpful sermon Sunday morning from Acts 20:24*.

The Lenten Season does not seem to cut much of a figure in social affairs here.

Frank Ford and Harvey Jonas and Mr. Kyle went to Manassas on Tuesday night to attend a meeting

of Masons.

John Harper, tonsorial** artist from Manassas did some fine work here on Saturday. He was well

patronized, and has promised to come every Saturday.

* Acts 20:24 – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;

my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of

God’s grace.”

Republican Women of Clifton announce KCarl Smith to speak at March meeting

CLIFTON, VA, February 5, 2014 – The Republican Women of Clifton (RWC) welcomes KCarl Smith, unyielding

defender of the constitution and liberty. Inspired by the guiding principles of the Founding Fathers, he launched The

ConservativeMESSENGER in 2009. The mission of this grassroots initiative is to enlighten, educate, empower, and

equip its members to reignite America’s passion for liberty, recapture the Republican Party’s political distinction, and

promote racial unity. KCarl has taken what began as a rallying cry and has spearheaded a movement that has climbed

into the thousands. In 2011, The ConservativeMESSENGER evolved into what has now become the Frederick Douglass

Republican movement.

Known as a political motivator, KCarl captivates and inspires audiences with infectious energy, compassion and satire.

He uses his expertise to provide down-to-earth solutions on how the conservative movement can broaden its base. Smith

has appeared on the 700 Club and FOXNews’ Huckabee Show and has participated in The Runaway Slave, a soon to be

released documentary produced by the Reverent C.L. Bryant.

The son of Retired Colonel Earnest C. Sr., and Ms. Bessie Smith, KCarl is a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and was

raised in Huntsville, Alabama. He is a graduate of Alabama A&M University and makes his home in Trussville, Ala-

bama. KCarl is the proud father of three adult children and the grandfather of three.

The meeting will be on Wednesday, March 19 at the Fairview Elementary School,

5815 Ox Road, Fairfax Station. The social hour will begin at 7:00 p.m. when refresh-

ments will be served and President Alice Butler-Short will open the business meeting

at 7:30 p.m., after which Mr. CKarl Smith will deliver comments and entertain

questions. “RWC is excited to host KCarl Smith who is sure to invigorate our mem-

bers and ready them for action,” said Butler-Short.

Guests will be asked for a $5 donation at the door for TAPS - the Tragedy Assistance

Program for Survivors of our Fallen Heroes.

Democratic Women of Clifton and Northern Virginia (DWCNV)

February 2014

At its Annual Meeting on January 19, DWCNV Chair Jane Barker said that the organization, which is entering its 10th

year, is active and very strong! After reporting that the more than 400-strong DWCNV membership continues to grow,

Membership Chair, Chris Randon, in accordance with the organization’s bylaws, conducted the elections for the

DWCNV Executive Committee. The membership re-elected

to two-year terms Jane Barker as Chair, Barbara Miller as

Treasurer, and Jane Leibbrand as Secretary.

Afterwards, three guest speakers discussed the status of

adoption, foster care, and children’s mentoring programs in

Virginia. Mr. Paul D. McWhinney, who serves as both

Deputy Commissioner for Programs and Director of Family

Services for the Virginia Department of Social Services, said

that more than 1,000 of the 4,500 Virginia children in foster

care are eligible for adoption. He described the 2013

VAdopts – “Campaign for 1000”, which sought to match

1,000 adoptive families with 1,000 children. Having facilitat-

ed 1, 041 matches as of January 10, 2014, the campaign exceeded its goal. Nannette Bowler, Director of the Fairfax

County Department of Family Services, presented an overview of the foster care and adoption system, highlighting the

need for permanency for children in care - particularly youth ages 12 to 17, as well as how to become a foster and adoptive

parent. Dr. Beverly Howard, Coordinator of Fairfax Families4Kids, a 10-year old program that provides regularly sched-

uled community events, educational, social, and recreational activities as an opportunity for youth to spend quality time

with mentors and potential adoptive families, invited DWCNV members to serve as mentors. She said that Families4Kids

events also afford the opportunity for the community to get to know the youth on a personal level, particularly area fami-

lies who are interested in adopting, fostering, or mentoring. (Pictured, from left to right: Dr. Howard, Ms. Bowler, and

Mr. McWhinney)

On February 9, the DWCNV members gathered at the home of

Terry Bell, a member of the DWCNV Steering Committee, to cele-

brate the organization’s 9th anniversary. The festive occasion afford-

ed members the opportunity to enjoy lots of good conversation and

food.

The next DWCNV general membership meeting will be held on

Sunday, March 16, 2014. All Democratic women in Northern Vir-

ginia are warmly invited to become members of this active and

friendly organization. Meetings are held on Sundays from 3 - 5

p.m. in the Clifton Community Hall. For more information, write

[email protected] or visit the DWCNV website at www.democraticwomenofclifton.org.
