Council held its annual Community Recognition Awards on Friday 20th October 2017.

Nominees, Councillors, Council Staff, Coomalie Organisations and Community Members came along to enjoy the presentation.

In the words of President Andrew Turner “the greatest acknowledgement however, is reserved for the mighty volunteers amongst us. These individuals, hiding in plain sight amongst us, undertake magnificent efforts to make where we live, a community. Whether

helping with the community rec officer’s holiday program, assisting others in getting around, reading at the school, helping out at the men’s shed, or library, or fighting a fire, the efforts are outstanding.

Volunteering value adds to Council programs and at times, replaces important but non-core responsibilities beyond the capacity of Council. Volunteering is valued at many tens of thousands of dollars, just in our small region alone. Together with other volunteer

efforts, is in the many hundreds of millions of dollars across Australia annually “

COUNCIL NEWS UPDATE

Council Finances Presentation and adoption of Audited Financial Statements

At the October Council meeting, Councillors were given a detailed finance presentation by its Finance Manager, Mrs Melissa Kerr. This also coincided with the adoption of the Annual Report and Audited Annual Financial Statements for 2016/17.

The Quarterly Budget Review and amendments, ten year Roadworks, Buildings and Community Facilities, Plant and Equipment, Footpath, Kerb and Gutter Renewal Programs were all tabled and various issues and processes discussed. It was a valuable presentation highlighting the long term plans that guide Council’s annual decision making.

Special Edition – Stop Press – proposed discussions with Belyuen Council

Council issued a special edition of Stop Press recently to provide public notice of Councils decision to enter into discussions with Belyuen Council around a potential Local Government model that involved Coomalie Community Government Council, Belyuen Community Government Council and incorporating Litchfield National Park.

Coomalie Councillors will travel to meet with Belyuen Councillors and Staff in mid November to have initial discussions and establish a suitable terms of reference to guide discussions towards an expanded Local Government Body.

Regular progress reports on these discussions and potential outcomes

will be made through Stop Press or special editions. Please contact your

local Councillors for further information and to provide your feedback.

Coomalie Aged Care Network – Commonwealth Government presentation to Community members and organisations.

On the 11th October, 2017 an important meeting of the Coomalie Aged Care network met at the Council Chamber to hear from 3 representatives from the Commonwealth Government Department of Health.

Maya Murphy, Senior Program Manager, SA/NT Health Network, Australian Government Department of Health gave an enlightening presentation on what can be done to access the funding support necessary to deliver in-home services and consumer directed care packages. Central to this due to Coomalie’s distance from Darwin Service Providers is for the Council to consider developing a model that would allow it or a similar community body to become an accredited service provider that would then be used for brokering of services from meals on wheels, home maintenance services through to provision of aged care packages to aged clients.

The most important area that must occur first is for people 60 and over to make time to register through the Commonwealth Government Aged Care portal/website that will formally establish the need for our residents. The Batchelor and Adelaide River Health Clinics can assist in this regard.

Dependant on numbers this may attract the interest from

Darwin based Aged Care service providers in the first instance.

Council will concurrently investigate becoming a service provider and has already held discussions with the CEO, Belyuen Community Government Council in relation to their service provider status and highly successful home support and home care package services to their community.

The resolution from Council at its October meeting was as follows:

1 - Supports the concept of Sign up Program by Coomalie Seniors and coordinated by Batchelor/Adelaide River health clinics to enable eligible seniors to be registered and assessed under the variety of aged care programs funded by the Com-monwealth Government.

2 - Council seeks urgent funding support from NT Government/Commonwealth Government for appropriate funding support to enable and house an Aged Care Coordinator for at least a 2-year period to enable Coomalie Aged Care Model to be realised that is sustainable.

3 - Council concurrently liaises with the Senior Program Manager, NT- Darwin Office, Health State Network –SA/NT, Aust Govt Department of Health, and seeks her support to be a mentor/advisor for a Community based provider model being

established for the Coomalie Region seniors.

Community Recognition Awards

National Men’s Shed Week Recognised & Community Connections Forged

Adam Troyn from the Darwin Czechs & Slovaks Group visited the Batchelor Men’s Shed to thank them for their recent restoration of Batchelor’s iconic Karlstejn Castle replica. Adam founded the Czech and Slovaks in Darwin group to maintain language and cultural connections. The image of Batchelor’s replica castle is used as the group’s Facebook masthead. https://www.facebook.com/groups/cesiaslovacivdarwinu/

The original castle founded in 1348, is one of the most famous and frequently visited in the Czech Republic. Interesting historic facts are displayed at the replica site. Here are some more lesser known facts. During a siege of the castle in 1422 attackers used biological warfare catapulting dead bodies and 2000 carriage loads of dung over the castle walls spreading infection among the defenders. As the castle did not have an independent water source, an underground channel was excavated to bring in water from a nearby stream. Miners who constructed the channel were massacred on their way out of the castle after construction, thus keeping the existence of this strategic weakness a state secret.

Men’s Sheds are community-based, non-profit, non-commercial organisations that are accessible to all men.

The primary activity is the provision of a safe and friendly environment where men are able to work on meaningful

projects. There are over 1000 Men’s Sheds in Australia, they work towards improving the health and wellbeing of

members and reduce the number of men who are at risk from preventable health issues that may be caused by

isolation.

The Batchelor Men's Shed in future will be known as the Community Shed and welcomes all men and women.

What’s Happening at the Tip

It's mostly good news to report looking back at the month of October. The larger skip bins that are available for the scrap steel collection have made disposing of steel easier and its great to see people using it, however we are still seeing old BBQ's and wire going into the skip bins for general household waste.

Please place these items in the steel bin instead. It will then be taken away for recycling and this in turn will help to extend the life of your tip.

Blue Light Disco

This month the Blue Light Disco was Halloween themed which was shockingly scaretastic. The kids and the adults in the Coomalie Region really enjoyed dressing up and getting down to boogie. 117 Stu-dents and adults attended the Disco and enjoyed a yummy Sausage sizzle kindly provided by Quality Meats, whilst dancing the night away. Thank you to the local Police, Night Patrol, Quality Meats and all volunteers who assisted on the evening.

Afterschool Sports

This month I will be running sports in the Coomalie region on a Tuesday (Adelaide River School) and Wednesday (Batchelor Area School) where we will be playing various types of sport such as cricket, basketball, hockey, dance, AFL, bowling, badminton, tennis, soccer and various other sports. I welcome all the kids from the Coomalie region to come down and have some fun playing sports.

Please ensure that a participation form is completed if you intend to come along and join in with the after school sports program.

Seniors Christmas Lunch

This year we will be enjoying an appetizing lunch at the Rum Jungle Tavern on Wednesday the 13th of December. A bus service will be available from Adelaide River, to secure your spot on the bus please contact Council as soon as possible. Please RSVP by Thursday the 30th of November, as there is limited seating, so to avoid disappointment please RSVP as soon as possible as it will be first in best dressed. Please note NO individual invitations will be sent out. Advertisements for the function will be placed around the townships at the shops, Health Care Cen-tres, Library and public notice boards.

My name is Jane - I am a Registered Nurse / Midwife and I am thrilled to be working at the Batchelor Primary Health Care Centre of Excellence!! My passions are Women's Health and Acute Care, and I am super enthusiastic and annoyingly keen to learn and provide the best care I can.

My two cane toads (kids) and I moved to Batchelor nearly 3 years ago and couldn't be happier in this welcoming, kind, diverse and beautiful community. We love getting out into the great outdoors or spending time in the veggie patch, and recent visitors to the clinic will know we have a new family member named 'Bangers' that is keeping us all well entertained!

I love where I live and what I do and would like to acknowledge all my colleagues and friends at the clinic, I really believe we are a great team who genuinely care for each other and the community at large, and we have plenty of laughs along the way.

STOP PRESS November 2017

As expected, at this time of year, our visitor numbers have dropped off very obviously. However Ethical Adventure Tours are till bringing people to Litchfield with a visit to the Museum en route, and this is expected to continue say twice a week for the next month. A lot of these tourists are from overseas and are anxious to know something of the history, and in particular some Aboriginal stories. There will be an Australian map being displayed shortly which will show all tribal areas.

We will therefore be open through November but probably only for selected time to suit.

You may recall I asked for anyone having information about a memorial plaque to a Dutch Squadron which flew out of Batchelor during WWII. With help from Margret Curry at Northern Territory Library that plaque has been located and I have been advised just today. The memorial is at Adelaide River War cemetery, so I will be taking a current photograph to show the gentleman where the memorial is now situated. The photograph is to be included in a Dutch family history as the brother was killed during a bomber mission.

It is good to be able to settle this enquiry, as it obviously has great meaning for the serviceman’s younger brother.

Malcolm and Helen will be leaving soon to travel to Queensland-we are hopeful they may return. However they have been great ambassadors for the Museum and in turn they have enjoyed the friendships and entertainments offered during their stay at Batchelor.

The rains have brightened up the surrounds and that is excellent, but it also means a return to mowing and weeding. We do hope to get the lawn growing better where Mahogany trees have been removed during this Wet season.

The rain will have washed the dust off the solar panels for us too.

Still plenty of administrative tasks for the Museum working group, and I will endeavour to finish off a story about the development, pictures, and people involved in this next few months.

It was obvious from comments made at the Ted Egan talk that many locals haven’t bothered to look at our history as presented. I invite you to do so!

Whilst the Batchelor Museum is primarily an interpretive one, we have been given some wonderful display items. When you visit you will see the name on the ob-ject and the person who has donated it- some of the notices are yet to be done.

Items must be given permanently to the Museum and there is a form which we will have available- the format given to us from the Military Museum in Darwin, please be aware this is a common policy of museums.

Be proud of the Museum – it will showcase the unique town of Batchelor and will be a valuable resource to bring visitors from all over.

Remembrance Day 11th November – when we reflect on those who died or were injured in war.

People in modern conflicts are remembered as well as those in World War I and II. The library has

a number of books about war and can direct people to web sites like the Australian War

Memorial https://www.awm.gov.au/atwar which has detailed information, pictures and videos

about soldiers and conflicts.

Good news for all our library patrons! We still have funds available from NT Libraries for more

I would like to remind everyone again about some important rules for the safe and peaceful

running of the Library.

Children under 8 must come with an adult or an older child who is at least 12 years old to

supervise them. As our members know, Library staff take great care of the children visiting, but

we cannot be responsible for them outside the Library doors. If any children are asked to leave

because of unsuitable behaviour, they must go home. It is obviously unsafe for young ones to be

hanging around outside the building or roaming around the school grounds. Parents, if you have

any concerns at all about this, please just come and ask me. I am happy to give the Library

number or my mobile to anyone needing to keep in touch.

Dogs in the Coomalie Shire All dogs within the Coomalie Region over 3 months of age must be registered.

You can register your dog at the Coomalie Council Office in Batchelor or Adelaide River or via email.

Dogs must be on a leash at all times in any public area otherwise they will be impounded. Fees apply if your dog has been put in the pound.

Impoundment fees are initially $90.00 for registered dogs and $165.00 for unregistered dogs, then $60.00 per day kept in Pound. Registered dogs are kept for 3 days and unregistered dogs kept for 2 days.

Unregistered dogs must be registered before being released from the pound.

Registration Fees Town Dogs - A limit of 2 dogs per household applies Registered July-June (1 year) $30.00 Registered January—June (6 months) $20.00 Concessions 1/2 price
