LI: To use effectives sentences

Dictionary Task: Find out what these words mean and use them in a sentence:

-Flourish

-Fundamental

-Fluctuate

This week, you are going to be having some free writing time – this is to allow you to practise all of the new skills you have picked up this year. For the first day, I just want you to enjoy writing about the picture I give you – create your own story: what can you remember that you might include in your writing? Can you remember any new words you learned? Can you remember some figurative language perhaps?

The picture below is your prompt (this is like awesome authors) – I have shared a story starter, which you can use you get you started – you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

The creaky, old doors had not been opened for years. The beast had always lived inside, but nobody dared to visit. Noises that echoed from the gaps in the door had haunted those who heard them. Nobody knew what the narrow, mossy steps led to. Nobody knew what was lurking within.

One day, the heavy, wooden doors slowly began to open with a groan…

Can you continue the story of the mysterious door?

Remember to edit and improve your work after you finish it!

LI: To employ new vocabulary

Here is your writing prompt:

Today’s session is all about using new vocabulary in your story writing. I have created a word cloud – see if you can use as many of the words in there as possible in your story. Give yourself a point every time you use one. If you are not sure what they mean – look it up in a dictionary (https://www.dictionary.com/) or ask someone else.

Here is a story starter you could use to get started:

The scuttling noise had disturbed Michael, and he’d shot bolt upright in bed. After taking a deep breath, he flung himself onto the smooth wooden boards of his bedroom floor and took a peek…

We would love to read what you come up with, so if you want some feedback – upload your writing to Tapestry.

Is it finished? It isn’t finished until you can say it is amazing – so check back through for little mistakes and anywhere you could make improvements!

LI: To use relative clauses

Dictionary Task: Find out what these words mean and use them in a sentence:

-Imposing

-Incite

-Infer

You have done really well with including relative clauses in your writing this year – so here is another opportunity to show off that skill.

Here is a reminder of how to do them if you need to check:

https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-a-relative-clause#:~:text=A%20relative%20clause%20is%20a,as%20who%2C%20that%20or%20which.&text=The%20relative%20clause%20is%20used,'related'%20to%20the%20noun.

My examples for the picture (I have highlighted the relative clauses):

Struggling to control his excitement, he reached up and grabbed the carpet , which was on the highest shelf; his legs shook with joy.

He swooped around corner after corner. He soared clear of the man, who tried to grab him as he flew past, and off into the night.

He didn’t like the look of the overhanging rocks that looked like they could crumble at any moment – perhaps trapping him forever.

Here is your inspiration for writing today:

The boy leant to his left and swooped around another corner. He never felt more alive than when he was on his magic carpet.

Finding a straight stretch of road he urged the carpet to top speed, sending plumes of dust from the ground all around him. He quickly approached a woman dressed in black carrying a bowl of fruit…

Can you continue the story?

Can you write instructions about how to fly a magic carpet?

Is it amazing? If not – how can you make it amazing?

LI: To use a range of figurative language

You have produced some wonderful writing using figurative language this year and that is your main aim today – how might you include figurative language in your writing today?

Here is a reminder of the different types of figurative language you might use:

Here is your writing prompt:

He arrived at the surface of the water and took a refreshing breath of air. Whilst keeping his body completely still, he glanced around the swamp with large, circular, green eyes.

After several moments, he slipped his enormous body beneath the surface of the water once again, and slithered off in search of food…

My examples of figurative language:

Pathetic fallacy:

Angry clouds of fog shrouded the forest.

Metaphor with alliteration:

The towering trees were an approaching army filled with unknown dangers.

Hyperbole with a simile:

Fireflies lit up the ever-darkening forest like a million stars in the night sky.

Don’t forget to share your work on Tapestry!

LI: To show awareness of the reader

One of the greatest skills you can develop as a writer is to be able to show awareness of the reader. This can come in a huge variety of ways: if you were writing an information leaflet about a particular football club, you’d want to include loads of amazing facts that fans of that team would want to know or that they enjoy reading about as it would make them enjoy the text more; if you are writing for a younger audience – you might want to include more pictures and simpler words.

When you are writing a story there is a number of ways you can demonstrate this awareness. It could be speaking directly to the reader; it could be using humour; it could be asking them rhetorical questions.

Before I show you a few examples of this, I would like you to watch the inspiration for your writing.

The inspiration for your writing today is a documentary on Pandora (the planet from Avatar). Have a watch of the video and think about what you could base your story on. You might choose to have a chase through the jungle with one of the many strange creatures; you might decide to have your character crash land on the planet and talk about all the weird and wonderful things they encounter – it is completely up to you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBGDmin_38E

I would make notes as I watched the documentary – you can pause it as you watch it to give yourself time to write things down. Don’t forget that you can watch it more than twice to get your

ideas!

Here are a few examples of how you might show awareness of the reader:

To show awareness of the reader, you can speak to them and ask them questions – rhetorical questions are a great way to achieve this:

-Can you believe my surprise when I looked out of the window and I was surrounded by a completely new, undiscovered world?

-I never meant to do it – can you understand that I had to?

Another way is to let the reader know you don’t expect them to understand the situation:

- I know you won’t understand this as you’ve never seen it before, but trust me – it was THE most amazing thing you could ever witness.

-This must be hard to imagine for you, but it really was terrifying!

Or perhaps they might understand it:

-You know that feeling you get when you go over a bump in the car and your stomach drops? This is how I felt when I opened my eyes.

Remember, you are trying to show you are aware that someone is reading your writing. Ask them questions, refer specifically to them, and perhaps even put some humour into your writing.

Once you finish, edit and improve what you have done and send it to us on Tapestry for feedback. Reading it through aloud is a great way to spot if you have made any little mistakes or if you can make any improvements.
