Happy Fall, Happy October! The autumnal season brings upon us an opportunity to gather with our

friends, family and school community. During Fall Break (October 7th-11th), my wish is that you are able

to spend additional quality time with your loved ones. Furthermore, we look forward to meeting with you

during Parent/Teacher conferences on October 17th and October 18th (both are half days with students).

Thank you for all of your support in the first quarter and your unsurpassed commitment to helping your

child succeed.

Moreover, please make note of the following:

Friday, October 4th is a half day for K-8th grades with a 12:15 pm dismissal. This day helps to

provide time for your classroom teachers to close out the first quarter grades and finalize your

child’s 1st Quarter Report Card.

Fall Break is Monday, October 7th-October 11th, 2019

In addition, Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences will follow our Fall Break. P/T Conferences will take

place on Thursday, October 17th from 1:00-6:30 pm and Friday, October 18th from 1:00-3:30 pm.

Middle School conferences will take place in the cafeteria by team in an open forum setting on

both Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th.

Elementary conferences will be scheduled by your child’s classroom teacher and housed in their

individual classrooms.

Conferences provide an excellent opportunity for you and your children’s teacher(s) to share

academic, social, and emotional strengths and challenges.

October PTO Meeting on Monday, October 21st, beginning at 6:00 pm in the library.

Our 3rd-8th Grade Awards Assemblies will take place Friday the 25th for 3rd-5th Grades; Tuesday the

29th for 8th grade; and Thursday the 31st for 6th and 7th grades.

School appropriate costumes are welcome on Thursday, October 31st.

Happy Fall everyone! ‘Tis the season for pumpkins galore, apples, scarecrows, and so much more! Our lil pumpkins

enjoyed their Johnny Appleseed Day. Thank you to everyone who donated or came out to volunteer and enjoy that

special day with us. This month is packed full of awesomeness with fall Fun Day (Halloween) in our classrooms, Parent

Teacher Conferences, Red Ribbon Week and of course this beautiful month of October also includes a well deserved Fall

Break for our kiddos. Over the break you can still keep them engages and learning! Go on a hike at Madera Canyon and

look for living / non living things. Take a map with you and explore. Another great place to explore with a map is at the

zoo! Take them to the library to find some fun books, see how many sight words you can find in them! Check out some

cute Halloween themed books for bedtime! I recommend “Good Night Goon” and “Creepy Carrots”.

The fall is here and with that brings a lot of excitement in first grade. We would like to thank all the parents that

donated their time volunteering and donated items that were needed for our fall craft day. It was such a memorable

day thanks to all of you! We are also looking forward to meeting with you for our fall parent/teacher conferences.

Please make sure to sign up for a time with your child’s teacher. We look forward to meeting with you soon! Please

remember to read nightly and continue studying your sight words. This is so important to student’s reading success. We

appreciate all your continued support from home. Happy fall!

Wow! It is hard to believe that the first quarter is coming to an end! Fourth graders have been very busy during the first quarter and will continue to stay busy. After Fall Break, we begin learning multi-digit multiplication and division strategies. Please, please, please encourage practicing those multiplication and division facts!

October 1 is SUSD Shines Day. Students are encouraged to wear blue. Friday, October 4 is a half day and the start of Fall Break, which is October 7-11. After break, parent/teacher conferences will be held Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18. Look for sign-up information from your child’s teacher.

Please make every effort to have your child here every day. If he or she will be gone for more than a day, please contact your child’s teacher for missed work. Sometimes, missing one day means missing one third of a math unit!

th Grade Families!

As you can tell, our first quarter was jam packed with high levels academic content! This will continue for the

duration of the school year. Now that almost a full quarter is under our belt, we have noticed a slip with some

students who are struggling to stay organized, turn work in, and use their agendas daily. Please continue to

communicate with your child about their day, their work, and upcoming events. This way they can be

prepared and supported both at home and school!

As you know, Power School provides you with excellent information, so academic information is always

available. It is crucial that you are using this tool to stay informed. With that, first quarter conferences will be

held after fall break. Please be on the lookout for communication from classroom teachers regarding how to

sign up for a conference time!

We hope your families have a restful Fall Break! Please watch for content related to fractions, informational

writing, and much more as we begin second quarter!

Information regarding how Red Ribbon Week and Halloween will be celebrated at school will be shared in

detail, from your child’s teacher, in the coming weeks. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

We are excited to be entering October (already!). Be on the lookout for Parent Teacher conference

behavior and academic concerns, i-Ready scores, and Report Cards. When we come back after Fall

Break, we will hit the floor running by learning about adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and

Science Unit. We are hoping to culminate our unit with a field trip to the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum on

December 13th

(we will send home more information as it approaches). In math, we will be working on

rounding, two step word problems, and we will continue practicing our multiplication facts to mastery. On

Thursday, October 31st

, we will have our Fall Fest Craft Day. Be on the lookout for an email about needed

supplies and volunteers. The next book report is due on November 18th

The Month of October:

Summer is gone and Fall is here! The students are transitioning into middle school and adapting to middle school expectations. They have attended a few Pep-Assemblies, Patriot Day Memorial and many have played their first middle school game, cheered for our athletes, performed with the band/orchestra or choir, have participated in fundraisers and simply have helped Anza School be a better place. Middle school is the gateway to high school. We ask that you help your child find their strengths where they can be an asset to their community. We look forward to our continued partnership in making our students productive members of our community.

Things to remember: Science Fair is coming up. Language Arts is working on informational writing. Social Studies is learning about Mesopotamia and Egypt. Math is asking that you work with your child on math facts. Please donate healthy snacks in order to continue with our positive reinforcement--Coyote Cash rewards.

Algebra completed their first benchmark with flying colors. All classes are well into the routine of classwork and homework using mathematical discourse. Remember to complete your iReady online for 45 minutes weekly.

Our i-Ready Language Arts diagnostic results enable us to assign individualized homework for each student tailored to their needs. These will comprise student homework for second quarter. Lunch period and after school sessions will be held to help those without access to computers.

Greetings Anza families! It's hard to believe the 1st

quarter is already over! It has been great getting to

know new students and learning more about

returning students. We have practiced procedures

and routines in the music room, sung many

different name songs, and getting to know you

songs and activities. The 3rd and 4th grade students

have now begun their recorder training and have

received recorder books and folders to take home

and practice. The 5th grade Choir and the after

school Choir Club are learning music for Choir Day,

which they will participate in on November 14th.

More info will be coming home soon about Choir

Day. Looking ahead we have our first musical of the

year happening on December 10 & 12 performed by

the 1st Grade! More information will go home soon

about those performances as well.

6th grade: I’m excited to welcome new students to my Spanish class! This quarter, we will be learning about traditions and

cultures in Spanish speaking countries, and a little bit about the Spanish language. Students will have the entire quarter to

create a presentation about a Spanish Speaking country and they will be presenting it at the end of the quarter.

7th grade: This grade level will be working on learning the basics of the language in order to prepare them for the next level

Spanish class. Students will learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, and a lot of other basic vocabulary. If they are successful in

this class, they may be chosen to be part of our Spanish I class that is offered for high school credit.

8th graders continue to work on learning the fundamentals of the language. Please remind them that for homework, a due date Is a due date! No late work is accepted. Students are struggling a bit with this classroom rule. I look forward to seeing them grow and learn more Spanish as the year continues!

Character and Leadership

Level 1

6th, 7th and 8th Grade students begin their Quarter exploring career paths (high school/college) and the internal

and external components of contemporary computer technology (desktops, cell phones, tablets, etc.). Students

identify internal components (CPU, RAM, Motherboard, etc.), explore external connections (USB ports, HID’s,

Ethernet, etc.) and learn the fundamentals and importance of an Operating System (Windows, iOS,

etc.). Students practice and explore Operating System Tools, Keyboarding (touch-typing) and the basics of

electricity (Circuits, volts/amps, AC vs DC, etc.). All students explore the vocabulary and definitions for high

school graduation (course credits, advanced placement, etc.) as well as investigate terminology used for

developing a plan for college (Baccalaureate, Major, Scholarships, GPA).

Anza Trail will soon be launching a Peer Mediation Program with the collaboration of Mrs. Lindsay Romero, our

Elementary School Counselor and Mrs. Rita Ornelas, our Prevention Specialist!

What is Peer Mediation? It is problem solving by youth with youth. .It is a process of which two or more students involved

in a dispute meet in a private, safe, and confidential setting to work out problems with the assistance of a trained student

mediator and adult supervision.

Students’ enrolled in Character & Leadership elective class are learning how to not only utilize peer mediation training to

solve their own peer conflicts, but are being given the opportunity to become a peer mentor for our 3rd-5th grade students.

Character & Leadership students are currently learning about the following Peer Mediation skills to effectively assist others

to solve conflict: Active Listening, Open-Ended Questioning, Paraphrasing, I-Message Statements, Win/Win Solutions,

Identifying a variety of solutions to elementary behaviors. Identifying feelings via Verbal & Non-Verbal Communication,

including learning a Peer Mediation Script students must follow when working with elementary students.

Selected student peer mediators are viewed as leaders & role models who demonstrate a positive strong character. Peer

Mediators must also be academically eligible to participate.

The Referral Process for Special Education Services

If you are concerned about your student’s progress in school, and you think the problems may be related to an emotional or

learning disability, there are some things you should do first:

1. Speak to your student’s teacher or teachers about your concerns. Many concerns may be typical and easily addressed with

an intervention or behavior plan. If the student continues to struggle despite of teacher supports,

2. The teacher would make a referral to the Student Teacher Assistant Team (STAT) and they would meet to review concerns

and recommend interventions/supports.

3. If the interventions are not successful, the team would refer to the Child Study Team (CST), which would then meet to

determine if an evaluation for special education services if necessary. The parent is a vital and equal member of the CST. At

this meeting, the team would discuss the child’s progress, parent concerns, and interventions that have taken place.

Federal Law and state regulations require evidence of previous educational interventions before a student who is experiencing

instructional or behavioral problems may be considered for a special education evaluation.

Introducing…The Coyote Coupon Store!

Anza is excited to announce the beginning of a new PBIS initiative for our elementary students, coyote coupon cash! Our existing coyote coupons will now act as “cash” for our new coyote coupon store. When students earn a coyote coupon they can take it and turn it in for prizes from our store. Prizes include: sticky hands, squish balls, unicorn headbands, lunch with a teacher, sports balls, and more! Students may turn in one coupon for a small prize, or save up their coupons for a bigger prize! A special thanks to PTO for funding our store. Our coyote coupon store opens quarter two.

This month’s goal for our ELL students is to work on using complete sentences.

We encourage you to find opportunities for your child to speak in complete sentences at home. Some ideas to help with this

are to:

- Talk to your child:

Ask your child to talk about his day at school. Encourage him to explain something they did, or a game he played during

recess.

- Talk, talk, talk!

Talk with your child every day about school and things going around the house. Sprinkle some interesting words into the

conversation, and build on words you’ve talked about in the past.

- Tell family tales:

Children love to hear stories about their family. Talk about a funny thing that happened when you were young.

Reading Lab

Our first Literacy Night will be November 7th from 4:00-6:00pm. Be on the lookout for a flyer giving you more information

on this fun free evening of literacy activities!

The READS program is excited to officially start in October! The READS program matches highly motivated middle school mentors

with elementary students who are struggling with their reading skills. Students meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00am in the

library to read together. This program runs from October through March.

Middle School students who are interested in mentoring younger students as part of the READS program should get an application

from their Language Arts teacher. These applications are due back to their teacher Oct. 2nd. At this time, we are only accepting 30

Middle School students for this program. If we have more than 30 applicants, we will pick students based on their application and

teacher recommendation. Chosen middle school students will be notified by October 16th.

Elementary students will be chosen by their teachers and the Reading Specialist. Teachers will discuss their recommendations with

the chosen elementary students and their parents during Parent Conferences in October. If you would like your elementary student

to be a part of this program, please mention it to their teacher during conferences. Your child will be added to a waiting list in case

space becomes available.
