PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Monday 20 April, Wynnum foreshore, the sun rose,

exuberating rich colours. Breathtaking, that of serenity,

peacefulness, bringing life, knowledge, courage and

energy and a new term! And, WOW, what a different

start to a term!

The Executive Team was extremely excited, elated and

appreciative that our Learning@Home was online to

commence Term 2. And no crash was experienced!

The holiday preparations and the support of Dan, from

the Website Service Centre enabled this. The photocopy machines ran hot right up to 8:00pm on Tuesday

preparing for our pop up home package drive through for the families who are respecting the social distancing

requirements.

We opened our gates to students whose parents are essential workers and we thank them

for the service to the community. These students are working through the

Learning@Home material providing us with feedback, to assist with the next round of

materials. All feedback and feedforward from our home learners will be greatly

appreciated too. This will certainly guide our design and writing phase. What an

experience for the students, providing feedback to the writers of curriculum material, and

learning through this process.

We opened up our pop up resource package drive through, ‘showing off’ our Prep

sunflowers, honouring ANZAC, and having the individualised packages ready for all the

students of those parents who responded to the teachers, requesting the packages. And,

our open air ‘give away’ library was a hit and brought such ambience to this occasion.

Staff were very jubilant to see parents and students, and this sentiment was reciprocated.

Two children came through the driveway on their birthdays, and they were entertained with

a little off key Happy Birthday jiggle by Executive Leaders!

Under the existing governmental restrictions we are working on our next roll out of work to

be loaded by Tuesday 5 May and the drive through will be organised for the same day,

using the similar process that occurred on 20 April.

I wish to extend sincere gratitude to all staff who made the start to this term as smooth as

possible with the Wynnum Warrior spirit of hope, courage, belief and ‘we can do it’

attitude. Thank you, to all parents and students for connecting with us and sharing this

village ethos.

I believe, this Saturday, many of us will see a beautiful sunrise for ANZAC, honouring all

who served and sacrificed for us.

The concept of the village is bringing much wonderment and awe! Take care

It certainly ‘takes a village to raise a child’!

ATTENDANCE AND ROLL MARKING In accordance with Education Queensland Guidelines, teachers are required to check in with all students each morning, even those 'learning at home' as this is counted as attendance for roll marking purposes. Teachers have set up a morning ‘check in’ routine using emails to determine the students' learning status and wellbeing, enabling these school records to be updated. Parents are also still required to communicate with the school their child's absence from learning due to illness or appointments. We have all made a brilliant start to this mode of communication and extend a huge thanks to parents for their prompt responses each morning and ask that this continues as it reduces the phone calls home and possible interruptions to your day.

An anonymous donation of paper from a Wynnum Warrior Angel, helping our school community. A very BIG thank you - your generosity is appreciated by all!

HABIT OF MIND The Habit of Mind for this week is an overview of the Habits and Striving for Accuracy. Always doing your best and setting high standards. Checking and finding ways to improve constantly. When the Habits of Mind is first encountered, it is common to view them as a list of fixed traits or skills that we want students to ‘use’ or ‘have’. We may initially view the list of the 16 Habits of Mind, each with their short definition, and see them as things that successful people do. The next logical thought is that we want students to do them as well. It is crucial we don’t have a fixed view of the Habits of Mind – the idea that people use or don’t use, have or don’t have the Habits of Mind - is extremely limiting, and incorrect. Successful, effective people don’t just use the Habits of Mind, they use them very well. The Habits of Mind are not an on/off set of characteristics. They are more correctly viewed as a set of continuums along which, with coaching and practice, we move toward ever more mature, more sophisticated, more effective application. It’s essential to acknowledge that everyone lies somewhere on this continuum, and we all engage in the Habits of Mind. The key point is that some people have developed their ability to engage in them to a very high level.

Our goal when working with the Habits of Mind is not to simply have students engage in the Habits, but rather our goal is to teach students how to engage in them more effectively. Our role is one of helping students move along the continuum of each Habit of Mind from simple to complex, from immature to more mature, from the basic to the advanced application of the Habit of Mind. The language of the Habits of Mind is about developing, extending, maturing, growing and improving. These are the Dimensions of Growth -

Value – extending, appreciating, recognising, connecting, advocating

Meaning – clarifying, uncovering, describing, exploring, defining, refining

Alertness – relating, responding, connecting, transferring, adapting, applying

Commitment – quantifying, self evaluating, goal setting, assessing

Capacity – widening, improving, expanding, increasing, refining, building

LIGHT UP THE DAWN ON ANZAC DAY 25 APRIL 2020

This year, stand in your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room to remember all those who have served and sacrificed. Just imagine how special it would be if every Australian was standing in their driveway at 6:00am on ANZAC Day, united in spirit, to remember all those who have served and sacrificed for us. Click on the link below to “Pledge your Place” and support our ANZAC’s Pledge your place

Our Prep Students have been busy making their own special ANZAC wreath. You can see that they have been busy demonstrating the Habit of Mind creating, imagining and innovating. Well done Wynnum Warriors!

LOVING LITERATURES This newsletter brings you not one, but two online texts to honour the

upcoming significant commemoration of ANZAC day. The first link will take

you to a resource produced by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It

is designed to introduce younger students to the ANZAC commemoration,

told through the eyes of a range of people with different perspectives of the

occasion. This resource provides the opportunity for you and your family to talk

together about this topic.

For the second text, we have Opa Reading Anzac Biscuits. This is a book

which introduces the reader to the way war impacts on a range of generations

through the process of making Anzac biscuits together. Enjoy.

LIBRARY BUZZ

SCIENCE NEWS Welcome back to Term Two in such very unusual times for all of us! Science is such an integral part of our daily lives. Spending focused time on fun science activities (when you can fit it in) will definitely have your children bouncing again, feeling happy and engaged in life and learning! (Parents may feel a little less stressed, after enjoying a few shared Science challenges with the students).

The following Science website is very engaging for children from all year levels (and their families). Easy to use on your computer at home for spontaneous extension learning! It includes reading non-fiction scientific texts suitable to all year levels.

The ‘Habits of Mind’ that are practised through Science investigations:

Questioning and Problem Posing

Creating, Imagining and Innovating

Gather data through all Senses

Responding with Wonderment and Awe

Thinking flexibly

Applying past knowledge to new situations

Taking Responsible Risks

Remaining Open to Continuous Learning

Happy Earth Week! Sue Crowe, P-3 Science Teacher and School Science Coordinator

It was obvious to see the efforts and creative

thinking in their menu, sign designs and food

choices.

LEARNING@HOME – the French way!

Yesterday the Year 6 students created and innovated their

own cafes! The students even found some humour in their

own designs using names in their menus such as ‘Isolate’,

‘Quarancino’ and ‘Coronassant’ with pricing displayed as

euros.
