Dear Wolfpack Nation, I hope November finds you well as we approach the middle of our first semester. It is important to understand how each of our students are doing through-out the year and very critical as we hit the month of November. If you have not been able to log in to “Family Access”, please take time to review your son or daughters grades, assignments, and assessments. Check in with them about how classes are going, and communicate with staff as needed. We are always open to discussing your child’s progress. Our students at Black Hills High School are excelling both in and out of school. We try to recognize students for their accomplishments, large and small, everyday. This may be in the form of a personal congrats, to a twitter post, a shout out on our big screen in the Commons, at a student led assembly, or more formally in our BHHS Wolf Tracks. I would like to recognize Junior Kim Perry for being selected as the YWCA Young Woman of Achievement Scholarship recipient. This is a huge honor and one in which Kimberly should be very proud of achieving. Also, we had a record number of students (19) selected this year for All State Choir and Band. We are extremely proud of the following students for achieving this level of skill. Choir: Emmelyn Affeldt, Kylie Bell, Nolan Harris, Jacob Noonan, Anna Schrieve, Samantha Schwartz, and Kate Zeldenrust. Band: Callie Bianco, Alex Bogacz, Jillian Emerson, Emma Lindemeier, Brooke Hawkes, Sophia Kelly, Brendan Lynch, Deven Nieves-Noel, Taylor Reno, Piper Shier, Aidan Swenson, and Jordan Vanbrunt. Congrats and good luck at the competition. Our athletic teams are now in playoffs and every team in the fall season has made it to districts in some fashion. We have both individuals (tennis, golf, cross country, swimming, and diving,) and complete teams (volleyball, girls’ soccer, and football) that are still alive and representing BHHS athletically. We are proud of them and wish them all the best as they move forward. Go Wolves! As parents, we are always looking for helpful resources when it comes to keeping up with technology. Officer Liska has shared with me a cell phone app that many of you might be interested in. There are several apps out there that seem very useful for assisting teens with appropriate use of cell phones both at home and at school. This particular App will block out specific time periods throughout the day when their student will not be able to access apps on the phone. See the article on page 8 of this newsletter for one that Officer Liska recommends. I do want to take time to thank you for sending us amazing students on a daily basis. Every weekday I am refreshed by your sons and daughters and the incredible things they accomplish and achieve. Like you, I get the privilege of seeing them “grow up” right before my eyes. You all have done a wonderful job raising some amazing people and I cherish the time I am able to work with them. Thank you. Have a Great November! -Dave Myers - Principal Principal’s Message WOLF TRACKS BLACK HILLS HIGH SCHOOL November 2015

Dear Wolfpack Nation,

I hope November finds you well as we approach the middle of our first semester.

We are proud of them and wish them all the best as they move forward. Go Wolves!

As parents, we are always looking for helpful resources when it comes to keeping up with technology. Officer Liska has shared with me a cell phone app that many of you might be interested in. Cold and flu season is here!! Please note the following health tips to avoid illness this season:

*WASH YOUR HANDS! Thoroughly and frequently!

*Use hand sanitizer when you can’t wash.

*Keep your hands away from your face.

*Cover your cough with your elbow…. not your hands.

*Stay home when you are ill….you should be fever-free at least 24 hours before returning to school.

*Avoid sharing food and drinks

*Get a flu shot!

*Remember that all medications, (prescription and over the counter), must have a physician’s

note, parent permission, be in the original bottle, and be administered through the Wellness

Center.

Parental Control for Cell Phones by Detective Chuck Liska

I often get asked about parental control apps for cell phones. There are several of them out there that seem very

useful for assisting teens with appropriate use of cell phones both at home and at school. This one: OurPact – Parental Control and Device Management for iOS Devices: Block Apps, Block Internet, and Schedule

Device Use for Your Child by ParentsWare https://appsto.re/us/Kvv34.i was shared with me. This may be of some assistance for parents that are concerned about cell phone use in class or maybe in your own home! This app

allows parents to block out specific time periods throughout the day when their child will not be able to access apps on

the phone…..like during class or the school day. As a parent 4 children I know how frustrating cell phone issues can be. I will continue to look for ways to assist with this issue that has becoming increasingly problematic.

Joslin Lindsay was selected by the WIAA to be an Athlete of the Week for week 7. Joslin, a senior, is on the Varsity

Soccer team. She scored a game winning goal in the 79th

minute against Tumwater on October 13th. This goal broke the school’s career record. She then had two more goals in

a match against Fort Vancouver.

Congratulations Joslin Lindsay!

YWCA Honors Kimberly Perry With Their Annual Young Woman

of Achievement Award

Kimberly has possessed a love of science and medicine her whole life and is a tremendous example of a girl without limits! She is currently a junior at Black Hills High School and is enrolled in the Running Start Program at South Puget Sound Community College. Kimberly has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her entire academic career while taking on AP and Honors-level classes.

Kimberly has always been deeply involved in her school and local community, showing a passion for community service and involvement from a very young age. Starting in elementary school, she peer mentored students with autism- playing, reading, and doing schoolwork with them. This passion for serving her fellow students carried on to middle school where she served as president of Builder’s Club, a Kiwanis International Middle School Program, and Change Makers, an anti-bullying and harassment club, in 8th grade. Going into high school, Kimberly promptly joined Key Club where she became Vice President her first year. Now a junior, Kimberly has been Co-President of Black Hills High School Key Club for the past two years. She organizes and leads volunteer activities and fundraisers through Key Club International with her Co-President. Since starting at high school, Kimberly has accumulated nearly 350 community service hours. She frequently volunteers with the Thurston County Food Bank, Olympia and Tumwater Parks and Recreation Departments, and the YWCA Girls Without Limits! Program.

Kimberly is an 8-year member of the Girls Without Limits! Program at the YWCA. She has a passion for STEM and she has served as a GWOL Jr. Counselor for the past three years, dedicating her summers to empowering and encouraging girls who are interested in STEM. She leads by example and is a wonderful role model for campers. On top of her love for the STEM aspects of this program, she is also very passionate about all other characteristics of the YWCA as a whole, including eliminating gender and racial inequality, women empowerment, and supporting your community.

Kimberly plans on graduating in 2017 with her high school degree and an Associate in Biology, heading to medical school shortly thereafter. She plans to major in biochemistry, with a possible double minor in microbiology and American Sign Language or Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, then continuing on to medical school.

As part of her award, Kimberly will receive the 2015 Mary P. Dolciani Young Woman of Achievement Scholarship, awarded annually to a young woman who has participated in the YWCA Girls Without Limits Program. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to a young woman who has the aptitude and interest in pursuing a college major and career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

36 DECA Students attend Fall Leadership Conference 2015

Each year, approximately 2,000 DECA students

from across Washington come together in Seattle

for the DECA Fall Leadership Conference. This

year, the Black Hills DECA chapter, led by

marketing teacher and advisor Brenda Knowlton,

sent 36 students and 4 advisors to participate in

this conference. This was the largest conference

turn out Black Hills has ever had. These students

and advisors had the chance to go see the Seattle Sounders play on

Sunday night, attend breakout sessions led by business professionals

Monday, and even hear keynote speakers, including Patti Dobrowski,

who has been featured on TEDxTalks. The Fall Leadership Conference

otherwise referred to as FLC, is a practical and enjoyable experience

that is one of the best ways for new students to understand what

DECA is all about. In addition to the breakout sessions, student’s also

got the chance to put their knowledge in to practice during mock

interviews and mock roleplays. There is also a vendor fair, where

students had the chance to sample new products and network with

businesses or colleges. Overall, our 36 student’s had a wonderful time, and it was an awesome and

unforgettable experience to kick off the DECA year with a bang.

Closed Campus—Students Must Leave and/or Return through Attendance Office

BHHS is a closed campus. Students are required to be on campus from the first bell until dismissal. If there are circumstances such as illness, an appointment or family matters that cause students to arrive late or leave early, the Attendance Office has to record it. If there were a lockdown, disaster or other emergency, and school personnel did not know your student was off campus, we would search for him/her. It is important, even when you personally give your student permission to leave, to call the Attendance Office at 709-7815 to let us know they have your permission to leave and we will get a note to them. Please remember to give us as much advanced notice as possible so we can get a note to your student with plenty of time to leave, particularly for an appointment. If you have questions, please contact Jill Bender in the Attendance
