Volume 7, Issue 1

Week commencing: Monday 30 November 2015

From: Anthony Partington, Principal

Celebrating Achievement This week has seen achievements and wider contributions to our community recognized at the

school. On Tuesday 24 November, we held our annual Prizegiving at the academy for students,

families and staff in our partially renovated hall.

It was a wonderful evening of celebration and performances as many of the Academy’s students

collected their awards for their achievements in the academic year 2014-2015. We were joined by

the Mayor of Stamford, councillors and other civic dignatories, governors and trustees, as well as

supporters of the academy.

The evening was introduced by Head Girl, Hanifa Bhabha

which was followed by an introduction by Chair of

Governors, Roger Moore and an address by me, in which

I spoke of the enormous number of achievements which

have taken place in the school over the course of the last

academic year and the pride in the students who have

been recognised for their talents in so many different

areas.

A solo piano piece was beautifully performed by Year 7

student, Xander Cooke before the presentation of

certificates and trophies were delivered to the students

by Wing Commander Georgia Williams, Officer

Commanding 85 (Expeditionary Logisitics) Wing, RAF

Wittering. We were delighted that the Wing

Commander accepted our invitation to award the prizes

and speak at the event. Her attendance recognises our

link to the Wittering RAF station and celebrates that

Megan Dunstan, a student from a service family stationed

at Wittering achieved the best GCSE examination results

in 2015.

A full list of the students and their prizes is available at the end

of this bulletin and a gallery of photographs are available on the

website and our Facebook page.

Stamford Welland Choir performed two songs before Wing

Commander Georgia Williams gave a powerful speech about her

own education choices and career path, with main message being

to never give up on your dreams.

The evening culminated in a thank you speech by the Head Girl, Hanifa Bhaha and Head Boy, Aaron

Dexter, followed by a stunning ensemble performed by Kieran Stubbs on drums, Megan Clayton

on vocals and guitar and Hanifa Bhabha and Jessica Lambe on vocals.

It was an evening of immense pride and joy, but the successes did not end there…

Seven of our students also won Youth Leadership Awards on Wednesday 25 November. Well

done to Joe Corby (Year 11), Katie Warren (Year 10), Ellie Calver (Year 9), James Millar (Year 9),

Nathan Naylor, Noah Allman and Lewis Parkinson (all Year 7).

Well done for your fantastic contribution to Teenzone and making it a successful facility for the

young people of Stamford. We are really proud of your work in the community, which shows the

spirit of the PLEDGES.

Ullswater Outward Bounds We have heard a number of

inspirational stories of friendship,

courage, determination and

excitement coming out of the Year

7 Outward Bounds trip to

Ullswater on the weekend of 13-15

November.

Joining the majority of the Year 7

group, were a small group of Year

6 children from local primary

schools, as well as a group of Year

8, 9 & 10 students who were

working towards their leadership

pledges.

We are so proud of each and

every student who pushed

themselves to the limits and

showed such bravery in many of

the tasks they were being asked to

complete!

(Please take a look at our photo

album on the website and

Facebook page.)

This trip could not have gone

ahead without the organisation

from our Parallel Curriculum

Coordinator, Dom Brister, who

Page 3: PRINCIPAL’S BULLETIN€¦ · Music Megan Clayton Philosophy & Ethics Callum Theodore BTEC Business Kian Whelan KS3 Achievement Prizes These awards are presented in recognition for

has been planning the trip for the best

part of this year. (He is already

planning for 2016!) On behalf of

students, parents and staff, a huge

thank you to him for doing a fantastic

job and giving our students

opportunities of a lifetime!

We would also like to thank all our

staff leaders who gave up their

weekends (and a great deal of sleep!)

to support the trip, look after,

motivate, encourage and support all

the students... We can tell by the

photos that they enjoyed it (especially

swimming in the freezing lake!). Thank you Mr. Bull, Mr.Treadwell, Miss Smith, Miss Gosling

(pictured), Mrs Richardson, Ms Thorogood and Mrs Twigger.

Reading Challenge Stamford Welland Academy are pleased to announce the winners of the Summer Reading Challenge

launched over the summer holiday for our new Year 7s.

The Challenge was to read all the books that we will be studying in English in the academic year.

They have a range of different challenges from Foundation to Core to Extended. Each level of

challenge required more detailed research, analysis and creativity. Some of the tasks involved

researching famous writers, writing detailed summaries of the stories, analysing poems and non-

fiction articles and also writing creative pieces such as poems and articles. Students then compiled

all their work into a folder to submit when they arrived in September.

After their first week a range of students handed in their Reading Challenges to their English

teachers. Then the students work was judged in terms of quality of research, analysis, creative and

presentation.

Two students were selected to received 1st

and 2nd Prize out of the whole of Year 7. In

first place was Haiden Williamson and in

Second Place was Katie Thomas. Both

students came from Da Vinci House. They

received a certificate for their work and also

a £15 voucher for the winner, Haiden and a

£10 voucher for Katie in second place.

Haiden said he enjoyed studying ‘Animal

Farm’ the most. This impressed the Principal,

Mr Partington, who asked Haiden, ‘Guess

what my favourite book is of all time? It’s

Animal Farm!’

Katie said she enjoyed studying all the texts. ‘It has been really helpful in our English lessons after

studying the work for the summer, I feel I know Macbeth really well.’

Haiden added, ‘I studied all the texts for about two to three weeks of the summer holiday and

completed all the tasks on the challenge. It was hard work, but it was worth it.’

Page 4: PRINCIPAL’S BULLETIN€¦ · Music Megan Clayton Philosophy & Ethics Callum Theodore BTEC Business Kian Whelan KS3 Achievement Prizes These awards are presented in recognition for

Mr Moan, Katie’s and Haiden’s English teacher added, ‘Katie and Haiden have made a great start in

English and their research and hard work on the reading challenge has helped them immensely in

being able to boost their level and analysis the texts to an impressive level.’ He went to state, ‘The

detail of Katie and Haiden’s work was exemplary and shows they have a real bright future here at

SWA and way beyond. Watch out for these two students . . . I believe they will achieve great things.’

Haiden and Katie can take a well-earned break and buy something for themselves with their

voucher, although they remained tight-lipped about what they would spend them on.

Mr Partington congratulated them on their achievement, saying ‘The amount of work they have

both produced is very impressive and it will clearly stand them in good stead for the rest of the

year.’

Rotary Cooking Competition & Bag Pack Congratulations to Elodie Hoppe who won the Rotary Club Cooking Competition against stiff

opposition from other competitors at the Endowed Schools last week.

Thank you to Trish Rees for her support and guidance. More details to follow in the next edition…

On Saturday 28 November, students, Ms Chong, Mrs Wallis and Mrs Bluff collected £194 for good

causes by packing bags at Morrisons.

Fireworks (Years 4, 5 & 6) On 16 October, we offered an exciting opportunity for current Year 4, 5, 6 pupils at several local

primary schools to take part in a Chemistry lesson. The pupils learnt how burning certain materials

lead to the various colours of fireworks being produced. Pupils were given the opportunity to

actually burn the materials themselves in small groups, before then working on posters to show

what they would make their own firework from. We hope all pupils had an ‘explosive’ time!

STEM BAE & RAF Roadshow On Monday 23 November the BAE and RAF Roadshow visited Y7 & Y8 pupils. The Roadshow was

a fun, interactive performance designed to capture the interest of our pupils, to hopefully increase

the numbers that take STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects and ultimately

increase the pool of talent in years to come.

The presentation focused on lasers, gyroscopes, sensing technology, pedal power (Dynamos),

Theremin, virtual reality, magnetism and sound pressure (Ruben's tube). The pupils thoroughly

enjoyed the interactive presentation and will hopefully be inspired to pursue interests in the

Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics fields.

Greater Lincolnshire Skills Show On Tuesday 17 November, the majority

of Year 10 students attended the

Greater Lincolnshire Skills Show in

Skegness.

This trip was designed to broaden their

knowledge and understanding of careers

and the various pathways available to

them when they leave Stamford Welland

Academy.

They were able to discover the exciting

career opportunities that further

education, vocational qualifications and

training including apprenticeships and

traineeships can unlock. There was a

variety of ‘Have a Go Activities’, the

opportunity to talk to employers about

what it is really like to work in a wide

range of sectors and students’ were able

to receive expert careers advice from

many careers advisors including the

National Careers Service.

The students were great ambassadors,

and took advantage of being able to

discuss entry criteria onto specific

courses, how to apply for apprenticeships

and get hands on experience of doing

some of the tasks that would be involved

in certain careers.
