A reminder that our Junior Next Steps meetings will comprise a 20 minute meeting with students, parents and Kaiārahi. They are next Thursday 10 August, from 2:30pm - 6:00pm. School will finish at 1:50pm but, because the Year 9s will be return from their Ski Programme after 3pm and Seniors have examinations, buses will run at normal times from 3:30pm. Year 10 students will be offered a quiet place to study if they do not have a Next Steps interview and/or need to wait for their bus. Next Steps are really important for all Junior students and parents and we do expect all to attend. If you or your child are unable to attend on the day please email your child’s Kaiārahi directly to arrange another time. Schedule an appointment with your Kaiārahi at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz , using the code h6z9h.

A reminder that Senior Exams are being held from Thursday 10 to Tuesday 15 August. The timetable has been finalised and sent out to all students and is on our school website. Please click here to view the exam timetable and associated details. Morning exams begin at 9:15am and afternoon exams begin at 1:15pm. Buses run as normal throughout the Senior Exams. Students should now be preparing a plan and beginning their study. Click here for a study calendar template. School exams are important for a number of reasons, including for students to practise the art of performing well in an exam environment, and they are used for ‘derived grades’ for the number of students who are always unable to sit external exams at the end of the year due to illness, injury, accident etc. Additionally, these results are used to determine end of year prizes.

As you will be aware, we increasingly use technology to communicate with our students about their learning progress and achievement - both while they are at school and when they are away from school. While we use a range of online tools to communicate, Google Classroom has grown to become the major tool for students learning. Google Classroom offers the ability for ‘guardians’ (ie parents and caregivers) to view a summary of what the students are receiving via Google Classroom on a weekly basis. After trialling this with our teachers in the first half of the year we would like to offer this summary to parents/caregivers. Before we do this, we feel that there are a few things that you should be aware of. Firstly, not all teachers are using Google Classroom in the same way, which we are fine with. As a consequence, as you get a summary of all your student’s subjects they may look different for some subjects. At the top of the summary will be any work that has had a due date allocated to it. This is labelled “Student work”. If this work has not been handed in by the due date it will be headed “Missing from last week”. If there is work due to be handed in the following week there will be a heading “Due next week”. The next heading is “Class Activity”, this is any announcements that your student received from the teacher for the week. This area will be separated into different subjects. This is often instructions about what learning to complete in class or links to resources to support learning. We are sure you will find this summary useful to keep track of what learning is taking place for your children at school. Our plan is to launch this next Friday so keep an eye on your email inboxes. If you have any questions about Guardian Emails, please contact James Rasmussen [email protected] or click here to read more from Google. James Rasmussen Deputy Principal

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the biggest, fullest term this year! Everyone has now (hopefully) settled back into their classes, some of which are new for the Juniors. Now it’s time to get back into the swing of things. Friendship Day last Friday was a great way to promote the importance of links with others, and how we need to take time out of our busy social life on the internet to get to know people in the fast paced environment which formed the basis of speed dating. As well as this, hand made bracelets for a gold coin donation raised money for ChildFund, and smiley stickers were present on nearly all blazers. It is safe to say that this day gave us all the opportunity to meet all the amazing cultures and characters WHS has to offer, which is why embracing diversity is so important. Our first house competition this term started off with a bang. Mr Charton did an incredible job at making sure all students nerves were on high, complemented by the intense Kahoot music. 10 well abled teams competed, cheered on by a equally supportive audience. We are yet to find out the combined score, but it was definitely close! Earlier this week we had our Options Afternoon. It was an odd experience not being part of this as a Year 13. Just another reality check that this is our last year, and that soon enough we will be going out different ways. To finish off this week we had Senior and Junior Ad Alta/Excellence assembly, with an incredible amount of students being awarded. Well done again to those of you. Danique Ehmann Deputy Head Girl

Congratulations to Om Alva who travelled to Dunedin on Tuesday for the Regional NZ Spelling Bee Round. Only the top two spellers can go through to the National Final and Om qualified. A fantastic achievement! We look forward to tracking Om's progress in this upcoming highly contested event.

Rockquest Congratulations to Cheery Moon who made it through to the top 20 Rockquest bands nationally. This is a significant achievement given only five bands came from the South Island. The group includes - Becky Reid, Hannah Coombe, Zak Komene. The girls from Rockquest are going to try for the Peoples Choice award and would really love to have everyone’s support so if you could text 5678 AND write cheerymoon that would be great! Jazz Band The jazz band departs next Tuesday for their annual trip to Blenheim. This year a change in route as we go via the West Coast. A great bonding experience for everyone. Alison Price

A reminder that from 1 September the WHS Uniform Shop is going online - well, mostly. The majority of our uniform comes from Argyle Schoolwear, and after careful consideration, as a number of local Primary schools have, we have decided to use their online shop for the items they supply. The benefits of an online Uniform Shop include: Convenience - open 24/7 (rather than the limited hours of our current shop) Phone ordering option Multiple payment options Always fully stocked The cost of individual items may vary from the current prices (some items will increase, others will decrease) however overall there will be a small net decrease in cost for an entire uniform. Items will be delivered within 3-5 working days via track and trace courier, with freight costs $4.25 - $10 per package depending on weight. Our onsite Uniform Shop will still operate and continue to sell non-Argyle items, including socks, belts, jerseys and tights, as well as holding a full size range of items for fitting and sizing purposes. Our Uniform Manager, Charmaine Wedderburn, will still be available at the end and beginning of the school years to help with sizing of uniform items. Any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Charmaine on 03-4427370 Ext 704 or email [email protected]

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the school for their help and support in the running of the Art and Hors d'oeuvres Evening which raised just on $21,000 for the Branches Camp Trust. It was a fabulous evening heavily supported by the wider community including the many artists who contributed, local businesses who lent their support and the many people who attended the event. We had a great team of people, special mention to Paula Hepburn and Rachel Vermier from Double Thyme and their crew of helpers for the catering and Ian Collin and his team for the running of the bar. I especially want to thank the students that got involved - Cameron Ryall for the sponsors logo and showing of the films, Bella Park for the photography, Alfie Parvin, Tyrone Henderson, Savanah Bowman for their musical talents and the amazing waitering and kitchen crew (who looked fabulous) - Kloe Vermier, Maggie Frew, Hunter Freemantle, Oliver Herron, Alice Price, Isobel Wallace, Neive Collin, Mackenzie Galbraith, Rebecca King and Haley Adamson. We also had two students who sold artwork - Esmond Paterson and Athena dela Cruz, it always adds to the evening to have student work as part of the auction. Thanks to all who were involved. The Branches Camp Trust is now looking forward to our next fundraiser - Thriller in the Chiller. Regards Vinny McCorkindale Trustee

Since 1992 Queenstown and Aspen, Colorado, have been sister cities. As part of this partnership, each year there is a high school exchange which Wakatipu High School and Aspen High School engage in. This past January Allan Birkett and Donna Baldey took 10 wonderful WHS students to Aspen via LA, San Francisco and Denver and had a fantastic time being shown the sights and local activities (including some awesome snow!). Activities included three days of skiing, cross country skiing at Pine creek, a visit to Smugglers silver mine, Iron mountain hot springs, a day at Aspen High school, a morning talking to primary school students about New Zealand and an afternoon presentation from one of the local Ute first nations people as well as time spent with host families and doing group activities. In June it was our turn to host our American friends where we tried to show them the essence of Queenstown (and New Zealand). Activities included a trip to Milford sound, a day experiencing life at Wakatipu High School, Skiing, the Earnslaw and Walter Peak, Orokonui Eco Sanctuary, Moeraki Boulders, Haka experience, luging, Bungy jumping and Skiing. The group left having had an awesome time and creating lifelong friendships. We would like to thank a number of businesses for their ongoing (and fresh) support of the exchange programme. Paul Anderson and the team at NZ SKI Real Journeys Jucy tours Tahu at Orokonui Eco Sanctuary AJ Hackett Bungy Skyline Ned and the team at Kiwi Haka All of the wonderful businesses that contributed to the welcome packs (there are too many to list here!) We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Donna for all of her amazing work helping to organise and run the Aspen exchange over the last two years. Applications for the next exchange will be coming up in the next few weeks. Keep your eyes on the school notices for more information. Applications will be open to current Year 9, 10 and 11 students and will be limited to nine students. Allan Birkett Teacher in charge

Arrowtown Creative Arts Society ( ACAS) was formed officially in February 2017 to support, extend ,promote and mentor all forms of creative arts industries and endeavours. This includes all forms of the Arts from visual, theatrical, written, musical, dance etc. Already our substantial existing membership a represents a complete and thorough cross- section of these pursuits- embracing Arts patrons as well. Whilst many of our members are professional practitioners it is only necessary to have an interest in the Arts to want to be involved. We are keen to connect with younger practitioners to offer opportunities to pursue their passions outside of school hours. Because we value all forms of collaboration and active promotion we have a monthly enewsletter and a Facebook page keeping all members aware of activities as well as a website for members in the pipeline It is one of our goals to provide skills development opportunities for members by supporting development sessions provided by both visiting and local arts people. We are also keen to stage arts events ( festivals concerts exhibitions etc ) to showcase members work. We have a series of weekend workshops planned in Arrowtown 27-29 October encompassing professional singing classes, guitar workshops, crime fiction writing, plein air painting, photography, wire sculpture, painting to name just a few of the activities. Family annual membership to ACAS is $35. If this sounds like just your thing send an email to: [email protected]

Japan's Foreign Policy Options in the Trump Era Professor Toshihiro Nakayama

Monday August 14, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Hilton Queenstown Resort and Spa’s Coronet 2 Room, $5 koha at door. Please register at [email protected] What are the foreign policy options for Japan in the Trump era – and the resultant implications for NZ and the Asia-Pacific region? After reaching their best relationship ever under Presidents Abe and Obama, will Trump’s isolationist tendencies mean Japan emerges as an economic adversary, or an ally with whom to share values? Prof Nakayama is Catalyst Trust’s third Kippenberger Chair speaker from Victoria University’s Centre for Strategic Studies. He is Professor of American politics and foreign policy at Keio University and an Adjunct Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs. His talk will focus on understanding the foreign policy options for Japan in the Trump era, how Japan sees America's role in this region and ramifications for New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.
