PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE December is going to be a very exciting month. Our student leadership team (Jr. SRC, Sr. SRC
and Room Reps) met last week to discuss all of the fun things we are planning for December.
Students should know that they play a big role in the success of our school. Their leadership
cares about what they have to say. Student leaders make a big difference at VCS.
We are excited to announce that on December 9th, VCS will be hosting a cultural appreciation
morning. Students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of cultures present in our com-
munity and throughout the province. More information can be found in this newsletter.
Thanks to the Grade 1/2 class for an exceptional Remembrance Day assembly. Students per-
formed poems and the community was able to watch a photo slideshow. Thanks to all of the
legion members that supported us that day.
I am very blessed to be part of a safe and caring school. Our staff is working overtime to make
our holiday season magical. Our annual Christmas Concert is on December 16th (7pm) and our
Christmas Dinner is on December 18th (11:30am). We hope that you can attend!
Sincerely,
Mr. Heritage

JUNIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
By: Nancy Kirzinger (coach)
The Junior Girls volleyball season ended earlier in November. We had a great season participating in league play against Wakaw, Bellevue, Humboldt and St. Brieux. We also attended tournaments in Wakaw,
Cudworth and Leroy, as well as, pre-district competition in Strasbourg. We ended our season with a sleepover at the school. It was a tonne of fun! We would like to thank our parents for their support and driving us to practices and games. Thank you to fellow students for helping out with home games by be-
ing referees, linesman and scorekeepers. Finally, thank you to everyone who came to cheer for us at home and away games. We appreciated the support!

CULTURE MORNING
By: Mr. Heritage
On December 9th, students will get an opportunity to learn about a variety of different cultures. Stations
will be setup throughout the school and students will take part in fun and engaging activities. We want to
celebrate diversity and inclusion!
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) are welcome and encouraged to come from 9:15am – 12:00pm.
We need your help!
We are asking families to prepare a taste testing dish (food in small portions) that represents their culture/
heritage. Our hope is that this process will spark some lively conversation about family history. Have your
son or daughter write down what the food is and why it’s part of their culture. We would like students to be
able to try a variety of food items from around the world. If possible, please include the recipe. Note: our
school is nut and shellfish free.
Students should come with their regular lunch as we don’t expect that the taste testing will fill everyone up. We are trying something new! With your help, I know our event will be very successful.

This month has been filled with lots of exciting activities. Starting in the week of October 19th to the 23rd it was education week at the school. During this week we had a variety for different things happening. On Monday the 19th we had our annual school picture day, the Scholastic book fair viewing and the election. Tuesday the 20th there was a potluck supper at the VCS gymnasium and the book fair was open to community, parents and students to purchase. This year there was $2000 worth of books sold at the fair, thank you to all who came and enjoyed the book fair. In the morning of Wednesday the 21st SCC held a very healthy and delicious breakfast. That afternoon there was also a kindergarten to grade 12 science team building activity in the gym, which was lots of fun, thank you Mrs.Hackl. On Thursday the 22nd the grades 1/2/5/6 had a presentation by the Saskatoon Zoo Society. Then on the 23rd there was a Kindergarten to grade 12 reading buddies in the gym, this is a great way to bring our school together and it really helps build relationships and confidence. Right after the grade 5/6 presented the annual Air Bands. The activity is always adorable and is a way of bringing out the kids creative side, very well done. For Hal-loween the Junior and Senior SRC held a Halloween week filled with different Halloween related activities and on Friday the 30th they put on a Halloween activity in the gym. The contest was to create one of the students into a mummy using toilet paper, the Kindergarten class won first place. Good job little mummies. The Senior SRC has announced they are having a fundraiser of selling Sobeys Gift cards. This helps the school earn money for your children's field trips. Thank you to everyone for all they do for our school, this month has been really fun and exciting. Good luck to all the students writing midterms and tests!
VOLLEYBALL HAS ENDED FOR ANOTHER SEASON
EDUCATION WITH A LITTLE FUN
Volleyball is now coming to an end with the junior girls playing their last game on November 3rd in Strasbourg. They had their wind up on November 6th at the school, a very traditional and fun wind up, having a sleepover at the school. Junior boys came to an end of their season with two games, both against Imperial, one in Viscount and the other in Imperial. They did amazing with winning both their games. Jr.Boys are having a windup soon but it's still unannounced on what they are going to do and when it'll happen. Senior girls have played four more games before their windup. The girls went to a conference in Annaheim, they played Quill Lake and Leroy. Both of these places brought their club teams. The girls had a very close game with Leroy but sadly lost to both teams. The windup is still unannounced but they do have something fun up their sleeves. Have fun during your wind ups everyone. You all did such an amazing job this year and everyone is very proud of everything you have accomplished this season! We hope to see this many join the badminton and basketball teams this year.

KINDGERGARTEN
By: Ms. Springer
Kindergarten is focusing on learning the word "unique". We are talking about how we are all different and special and finding ways that we can celebrate that within our classroom. We have been read-ing Elmer the Elephant books and looking at how Elmer embraces be-ing the patchwork elephant even though he looks different than all the other elephants. We are looking forward to December and all the fun and exciting things we will be doing!

GRADE ONE AND TWO
By: Mrs. Serke and the Grade One and
Two Students
Our class presented the Remem-
brance Day Assembly for the school
on November 9, 2015. We were
pleased that so many Legion mem-
bers, parents and community mem-
bers came to join us. We worked
hard to learn “In Flanders Fields” by
Lieutenant John McCrae. That po-
em was written 100 years ago! We
also presented a finger poem called
“Five Little Poppies” and a clapping
song about peace. We were happy
that the audience joined in. Then
we watched a video that showed
the many ways we learned about
remembrance leading up to our
assembly. We have many people to
thank for helping make our assem-
bly a success. Thank you to the
grade nines for helping us set up
the gym (Hunter, Dwayne, Riel,
Cam, and Chase), thank you to Mrs.
Blachford for playing the piano for
“O Canada”, thank you to Ryan and
Riley for carrying the flags, thank
you to Brookelynn, Maddison, Kay-
la, and Dexter for presenting the
wreath on behalf of the school,
thank you to Kyle, Dawson, and
Bryce for running the A/V equip-
ment, thank you to Mrs. Gress for
hosting and welcoming our special
guests from the Legion, and thank
you to Mr. Heritage for setting up
the stage and video for us. This
assembly was a wonderful way for
us to learn about the importance of
Remembrance Day.

GRADE THREE/FOUR
By: Entire Grade 3/4 Class
Our class started our drama unit in
Arts Education. We are very excited
because we are writing our own
script for our Christmas concert
performance. We don’t want to
give away the whole story, but here
are a few clues about our play:
Santa gets hurt,
There are superheroes involved,
We travel around the world.
You will need to come to the Christ-
mas concert on December 16 at
7:00 to watch the whole play and
see what happens.

In the grade 5/6 class we have been
having fun in science with Ms. Hackl
making prototypes that have to car-
ry a passenger using air pressure.
Our class has started a new novel
called Underground to Canada. It is
about slavery and the underground
railroad. For the Christmas Concert
we have started our play, called
Charlie Brown’s Christmas. In math
the grade 5’s have been working on
multiplication and division. The
grade 6’s have started decimals. We
have had fun in the past month.

This year there is going to be a Jr. coed
basketball team and a Sr. boys’ basket-
ball team. The Jr. basketball team will
be going from November until March.
The coaches this year are Mrs. Andres
and Nash Leggott. Mr. Serke will be
running the practices. That’s it for bas-
ketball but on November 3rd the Jr.
girls’ volleyball team had pre-districts at
Strasbourg. First, we played Lanigan
and lost both of our sets 19-25 but we
played our very best. Then we played
Watrous and lost 20-25 and 22-25. We
are all proud of how we did this season.

GRADE ELEVEN/TWELVE
By: Ms. Hackl
The grade 11/12’s took a field trip
to Regina to the RCMP Heritage
Center. We got to watch the RCMP
march. We had a great time learn-
ing about the RCMP and their histo-
ry. In Health Science 20 we are dis-
secting frogs. Brookelynn loves it.
Not only are we dissecting frogs,
white tail season opened today, so
half the class is doing some larger
dissections as well on their own.
Get ready because SRC is busy plan-
ning some great Christmas activi-
ties!

HELPFUL TIPS FROM OUR LEARNING RESOURCE TEACHER
By: Mrs. Frey
Building Background Knowledge during Social Studies Month!
One important strategy for helping our students understand the text they read is to help
them activate their background knowledge. When students make connections to what
they read, their comprehension increases. Background knowledge is everything a student
has read, watched, discussed and experienced. You can help your child build background
knowledge by creating a variety of experiences for them, talking about current events,
watching informational programs with them, reading a variety of text and helping them de-
velop a passion. The more background knowledge you have the more you can make sense
of what you read!
