President Dave Rokosh

With our Feb 20th speaker being Barry Burtis, DVM, co-founder of Bay Cities Animal Hospital, I ex-pected to be hearing from him about his profession. I went back to my limited experience with the ani-mal kingdom and veterinarians and the most interesting thing I could come up with reads almost like a joke. A friend of ours had a very ill cat and it needed a CT scan. Turns out that a "cat" scan was easier to get for her cat than for a human. Easier maybe, but pricey. She was glad that cats don't actually have nine lives, because eight more cat scans would have bankrupted her. But Barry saved me the problem of trying to ask him a question about my friend's cat's, cat scan, because his entire talk was about travel and photographs. He took us on inter-esting and well-presented trips to four continents. (The three remain-ing land masses will follow on his next visit to us) I welcomed the comparison of the sizes of the conti-nents. He's the first person I have ever seen, to illustrate how much larger Africa is than North America, while emphasizing that North America also includes Central America. I always felt that Africa has been a victim of the Mercator Projection: which makes places, like even a considerably smaller Green-land, appear much too large. It makes phrases like, "deepest, dark-est Africa", even deeper and darker, when you find that both Canada and the USA, can easily be placed in Af-rica. His photographs, almost all of them being images that I (a professional

photographer) wish I would have taken, were almost always placed two or more on the screen, showing an interesting mix of scenery, flora and fauna. Though perhaps too many of shots of him and wife Donna in front of identifying signs. However these were also good shots, certainly proving they were actually in all of these exotic locations. Not that we should doubt Barry, who seems an honest sort --- someone you would trust with a geographic location, or your cat. He's been more places than most people (other than say National Geo-graphic staffers) and he's welcome to that --- I wouldn't be swimming with penguins in the Antarctic, or say, rappelling down a waterfall in Africa --- I find physically dangerous activi-ties repellent. So, we'll welcome Barry back to Pro-bus --- he has all of Europe, Asia and Australia yet to show us. I'm anxious to see what he will do on Everest, although I don't think he summited. He's opened up my mind to new are-as of travel. Tame stuff, that even I could do --- like nights on a ranch in the Argentine pampas, or the pano-ramic view of lake and mountains from a Explora Hotel, also in Argen-tina. And that Rovos Rail luxury train in Africa certainly beckons. Maybe they have accommodations in a cattle car that I could afford.

I have been able to find both a white

and a red to recommend. Neither

are new but have been around for

some time and are generally availa-

ble.

White Wine

Santa Carolina Sauvignon Blanc -

Chile - LCBO # 269597 - $8.95

Some note of grass and hay but

mainly tropical fruits for a pleasant

full style. Good on its' own or with

food. Not at all aggressive as New

Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Red Wine

La Vieille Ferme Ventoux - France -

LCBO # 263640 - $11.90

An old chestnut that just keeps get-

ting better. It is made from mainly

the Grenache grape which is the

same as my recent Spanish recom-

mendations. Full of ripe fruit - cher-

ry and raspberry with good body

and low tannins - no mouth pucker

here.

Both these wines are featured in

Steve Thurlow's Top 50 LCBO val-

ues and the white was chosen as of

one Wine Aligns top 25 value wines

of 2013. Easy to find and definitely

worth a try!

Special Events

On the Humourous Side

How children perceive

their Grandparents

1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grand-ma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.

2. My young grandson called the oth-er day to wish me Happy Birth-day. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 80. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked,

"Did you start at 1?"

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and pro-ceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"

4. A grandmother was telling her lit-tle granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate

outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our po-ny. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. 6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word pro-cessor. She told him she was writing a story.

10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little sur-prised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting." she said... "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'." 11. Children's Logic:

"Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confident-ly. 'It means carrying a child."

"What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." 7. I didn't know if my granddaugh-ter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was al-ways correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" 8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky in-sects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grand-pa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights." 9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your under-wear, Grandpa," he advised "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."
