ISSUE #40 NEWSLETTER March 2015

Probus-Guildwood Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the Month, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church,

140 Guildwood Parkway, Guildwood Village – Everyone is most welcome.

President’s Message

Did you know that March is

National Probus month?

At the present time there are over

4,000 clubs in the world

comprising more than 400,000 members. As of

December 31, 2014, there were 235 active

Probus Clubs in Canada with 32,087 members.

The motto of Probus is, “Our strength is

fellowship, our success is participation”.

The basic purpose of a Probus club is to provide

regular gatherings of persons, who, in their

retirement appreciate and value opportunities to

meet others in similar circumstances and similar

levels of interest; i.e., to provide options for

members to maintain a path of fellowship and

learning. Members join together in clubs, the

basic purpose of which is to provide regular

opportunities to keep their minds active, expand

their interest and enjoy the fellowship of new

friends.

The most important person in Probus is the

individual member. Without any members there

would not be any Probus clubs. The success of

the club depends on the success of the

individual members.

Despite the cold weather together with the

ample amount of snow during these winter

months, many of our members have ventured

out. I think it is remarkable and I am impressed.

Spring is just round the corner and therefore it

will be easier to come to the meetings and enjoy

the fellowship and camaraderie.

See you on March 11, 2015.

Sincerely,

Membership

It was wonderful to see 38 members and eight

guests brave the cold and attend our February

meeting. Membership continues to grow nicely.

We now have 96 members. Please contact one

of our Probus-Guildwood executive members if

there are any changes in your contact

information.

Help keep us informed about members who are

ill, hospitalized or have had bereavement so that

Karen Manuel can send out cards. Karen can be

reached at 416-283-5079 or by email at

[email protected] We would also

like to know about any member’s special event,

award, 50th anniversary, etc.

Activities/Trips

We had our first gathering of

the Activities volunteer team

(Julia Taylor and Wendy

Hooker). There are many

ideas we have for P-G

Activities – to make life a little easier for these

volunteers (and anyone else who’d like to

assist) – a Survey will be completed at our

March meeting. We came up with at least 14

ideas for Day Trips; Nearby Outings; and

Miscellaneous/Other.

Growing old can be Fun… as long as you do it with the right people.

The Survey: we’ll be passing sheets across the

rows at the meeting with the following items for

members to “tick” which activities you would

be interested in – this will allow us to focus on

these activities and “get to work” on a schedule

of events. The Activites are:

Day Trips

1. Nuclear Plant tour/lunch

2. Prince Edward County

3. Port Hope

4. 1000 Islands

5. Hamilton Botanical Gardens

6. Shaw Festival – Niagara-on-the-Lake

7. St. Jacobs (a Thursday)

8. Quilt Festival – New Hamburg – May 25

9. Binder Twine Festival – Kleinburg – Sept. 12

Nearby outings

10. Scarborough Theatre – many possibilities

11. Herongate Theatre

12. Ripley’s Aquarium

13. Famous People Players

Other/Misc 14. CPR instruction – save a life

We are considering “car-pooling” for

smaller group activities – creating a

P-G environment for getting out and

doing things with members. Our goal is a FUN

outing using comfortable transportation at the

lowest cost possible. We will promote and

encourage other Probus club members to

participate with the goal to keep costs low.

We will continue to “keep our ear to the

ground” for good deals on trips and outings that

we feel would interest members. If you have

any suggestions or would like to assist – stop in

at the Activities table at the meeting.

Thanks. – Julia/Wendy/Gerard

An Introduction To Scarborough Women’s Centre

Scarborough Women’s Centre is a unique resource centre for women in transition away from abuse, poverty, isolation and emotional health challenges. Our mission is to facilitate the empowerment of women and girls to make long-term positive changes with confidence. Support services of information referral, educational courses and workshops, professional counselling, 1:1 mentoring assist women to move towards economic and emotional independence. We also have special programs for young women 15-19 years of age (Building Strong Futures) and women with a wide range of disabilities (Expanding the Reach). These special programs provide opportunities for leadership development and personal growth.

Founded in 1982, the Centre has touched the lives of 170,000 women and their children. This non-profit charitable organization (CRA #10795-9660-RR0001) is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and has two full time and five part time staff. eighty volunteers provide mentoring support, host educational programs, sit on committees, and provide consultation on organizational issues.

The Centre is funded by The Province of Ontario through Ontario Women’s Directorate, and the City of Toronto. Approximately 40% of our program expenses are covered by donations from groups, foundations, individuals and third party events. Our Speaker

Garry Cass on Estate Planning

[Garry has volunteered to answer questions on

Estate Planning submitted to our NewsLetter,

send your questions to ed. or our email id.]

Garry’s submission for March

Garry Cass specializes in legal issues

surrounding critical stages of life and helps you

to cope with them. Garry is a proactive partner.

He notifies you of dangers ahead. He cares

enough to tell you the truth, even if you may not

want to hear it. Each month Garry will be

posting articles for our information. He

welcomes any ideas for future articles. This

month's article is:

A Lawyer For Your Family

In the old days, there was a family doctor, a

family dentist, a family pharmacist, possibly a

family accountant and there was a family

lawyer. In the old days these were people who

served the everyday needs of a family. They

were there to deal with whatever challenges

arose and they were there to serve generation

after generation.

Today many of the services that trusted

professionals traditionally provide have become

commoditized. They have become, in the minds

of many, things to be bought over the counter

like for the lowest possible price. Lost in this

mindset, is something really important – the

relationship.

Today, when you talk about a “family lawyer”,

most people think about separation and divorce.

So instead, I want to be the lawyer for your

family and to return to traditional values. I want

to help you with the important things in your

life that need the assistance of a lawyer: buying

or selling property, making wills and sadly

when the time comes, administering estates,

helping with business matters.

March 2015 Probus-Guildwood Newsletter Page 5

Growing old can be Fun… as long as you do it with the right people.

Beyond that are the inter-generational issues. If

you are in the “sandwich generation”, how do

you manage aging parents on one side and a

growing family on the other? How do you pass

wealth from one generation to the next in the

most efficient way so that as little of it as

possible is lost? If you have a loved one with a

disability that you are caring for, how do you

make sure that the care will continue when you

are no longer able to provide it? How do you

pick a guardian for your young children in the

event of the unthinkable? How do you know

you are getting good advice about these very

important matters? How do you know who to

trust? I suggest to you that the answer lies in

getting to know your lawyer and letting your

lawyer get to know you. It also lies in straight

forward, easy to understand communication.

To conclude, look for a lawyer who wants to

build a personal relationship with you that is

based on the lawyer: (1) understanding your

needs, (2) offering you informed advice and (3)

providing great service for fair fees.
