ABOUTA Product Design Undergraduate in my second year at Bournemouth University, currently seeking a placement for July 2015 onward. I feel I am a hardworking, organised individual who brings a professional approach to all my work.

The purpose of this portfolio is to convey my design process and to do this I have included various projects and linked them to key skills that I have used. The portfolio includes work done both inside and outside of university. I love being part of creative environments, surrounded by determined individuals working together to create effective solutions for complex problems.

If you like my work, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

3D CAD Renders The first render of the lifeboat was a two hour challenge I had completed using Solidworks and rendered in Keyshot. The second is a spice rack which again was modelled in Solidworks.

Prototyping Emergency Phone Charger

Spice Pod

Page 14: Product Design Portfolio - Henry Williams

Prototyping I was briefed with an already existing design of an emergency phone charger. Over the course of 5 x 3 hour workshop sessions I prototyped the design from HIPS plastic and designed the PCB which would connect to a 9V battery.

Prototyping This was a prototype of an original design I had made for IKEA’s space saving range. The ‘Kreeda Spice Pod’ houses three spice pots which attach via friction fits underneath. Magnets on the back and top then secure to various metallic tabs around the kitchen.

Children’s Ambulation Wriststrap Project Ambulation wriststrap for children with progressive diseases

Page 17: Product Design Portfolio - Henry Williams

The Brief. As part of the Niemann Pick Association UK, Aparito have been tasked to design a wrist strap to hold a commoditised 3D accelerometer (commonly used in ‘Fitbit’) to monitor ambulation in children with progressive diseases. The children involved have challenging behaviours and so a safe, secure, child friendly band needs to be made for children to wear.

The idea? The original 3D accelerometer technology so far monitors all types of movement. It can tell when you are walking, running or sleeping. So us-ing this technology (as seen in Fitbit below), Aparito wanted it to monitor when someone has fallen over or had a seizure.

Design Spec After testing the original Fitbit ‘Flex’ (shown below), key considerations had to be adapted to suit children. These key spec points included: Softer material Easier attachment to wrist mechanism Must hold the accelerometer securely Easier accelerometer attachment mechanism

Initial Designs Below are the first initial designs of the product in question:

Page 18: Product Design Portfolio - Henry Williams

Conceptual Development Following feedback about the initial designs, the first Solidworks model was produced:

Detailed Design The form and shape was then slightly adapted for manufacture and material consider-ation was taken for the updated wrist strap:

Prototyping A boolean difference of the watch was taken away inside a block to create a split mould which could be 3D printed. Using the split mould, cold silicone could be poured and set in order to make a realistic prototype.

Ambulance Stretcher Warning Light A portable warning light for the NHS ambulance service to use on stretchers.

Page 20: Product Design Portfolio - Henry Williams

The BriefDesign a new warning/attraction light prototype that uses an existing microcontroller circuit to maximise sales by breaking into new markets.

The ProductIntended for the NHS, my product is an attachable warning light used to alert the gen-erl public of a paramedic’s presence with a patient. Ferno Ltd are the provider of ambulance trollies/stretchers and so the light will be made in accordance with their company.

Market ResearchPrimary research with an active paramedic reinforced the need for an ambulance warning light to accompany para-medics:

“Especially in isolated conditions, such as times when you are situated away from the ambulance itself or in a large public crowd, this product would be especially useful”.

“During the evening the warning light would add security , when dealing with road side incidences”.
