Changes From Research And Planning To Production Front Cover

Photos My initial ideas for my front cover was to have a long shot of the male artist with a blue background. My major change was putting the photo female artist on the front cover instead of the male artist. This reason that I did this was because I was disappointed with the photo quality, and he did not suit the pop genre because of what he was wearing. I thought that a female would be more relatable for the audience. I also used a photo that I originally had of New York for the background as I though that this would work better than just plain blue, as the blue would have been boring.

Color Using a block color for the background would have been boring and wouldn’t have suited my young audience who are fun, creative and like to experience things. That is why I changed that idea of using just blue. I changed the font color of the masthead from being yellow and red to pink. I changed some of the cover lines colors, they where all meant to be white but I changed “PLUS”, “BIG”, “EXCLUSIVE”, “SPECIAL”, and “LOST IN NEW YORK’ to pink. I changed the color of the selling line from green in a white box, to black in a white box, as this worked better with my new theme.

Changes From Research And Planning To Production Front Cover Text And FontsFontsIn my research and planning I looked into fonts for my magazine front cover. For the Masthead “IN THE SPOTLIGHT” I was going to use “THE BOLD FONT”, I changed this to ‘LOBSTER 1.4”. I added a black line underneath the masthead. With the cover line “EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH HARY GOWARD”, I changed the font from “ALIENS AND COWS” , to “MICHELUCCI”. For the cover line “REVEALED LINE UP FOR 2017’S IN THE MOMENT TOUR” , I changed the font to “MICHELUCCI”. I removed the cover line “MUSIC LIFE STYLE COPING WITH ALL THE FAME”. And “LARAS BEAUTY TIPS AND TRICKS”. And “THE THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT” I added ‘LOST IN NEW YORK” and “PLUS TAYLORS BIG KEPT SECRET” instead. I also added the artists name (Jess). I changed the font for “HARRY GOWARD”, from “THE BOLD FONT” to the “MICHELUCCI” font. And changed the font for “WANTS THE CHARTS” from “POESTEN ONE” to “MICHELUCCI”.

FeaturesA added a white circle. I enlarged the plus size and made it pink. I added the “Home Alone” logo onto my magazine to match my theme. ConventionsI added a barcode on to my first draft, and the issue number and the price.

LayoutI had changed the positioning of my cover lines so that they are on both sides of the girl and not covering the image, as this allowed me to use fonts that could still be seen. When I put the text on top of the image it was hard to read, and I was limited to what colors I could use as he was wearing a black t-shirt. And I thought that putting the text on top of the girl did not look right and was not about her. I moved the cover line “EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW…” down so that it was not so close to the masthead. And so that there was room to put the new things I added above. I also moved “REVEALED…” to the bottom of the page.

Changes From Research And Planning To Production Contents

PhotosThe photos that I planned to use was a long shot of the female artist (the girl on the front cover- Jess) , medium close up shot of the male artist (Harry Goward) , and a medium close up shot of the girl in front of the brick wall. In my first draft I did not use the photo of Jess. Instead I used two photos of Harry, however this again changes in my finale draft.

Color The original color that I was going to use for the background of my contents page was blue. I change this to using off-white and then in my finale production to white, yellow and grey. I did not like the design, but at that time it would have went with the front cover. Also the black text on the blue background looked too masculine and not appealing for my audience. The color the sub titles where red, I also found this too masculine. And the red text would have been in a green box. I feel like there was too much of a range of colors. So in my first draft I just decided to have pink and black, with white text.

LayoutA reason for me changing my layout is because on my draft I included too much information, that when I came to produce it, the images where too small and unclear, and they appeared to be too much text for a pop magazine. Instead of doing three columns I minimized it down to two columns of text, which where taken up by the editors letter . And then pictures. My pictures where on top of each other. And I put my content box with my page list below the pictures. Instead of next to them. And used colored boxes black and pink for the text.

Changes From Research And Planning To Production Contents

Fonts and TextThe fonts that I planned to use in my research and planning where “FOO” by “typodermic” fonts for the subtitle “INSIDE THIS WEEK”. I changed this heading “INSIDE THIS WEEK” to “INSIDE THIS MONTH”, and put it at the top of the page. And changed the font for this from FOO to “Bebas”. I removed the heading “CONTENT”. The font on my draft was not specific for the headings. I also used “Bebas” for this text. I changed the text for the content from my mock ups and drafts to my first draft so that it matched my flat plan. I also removed the sub titles from the content page “HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A JESS NEUBERGE CONCERT”, ‘ALL THE GOSSIP YOU NEED TO KNOW”, and ‘LARA SHOWS US HOW TO APPLY HER MAKEUP”.

Changes From Research And Planning To Production Double Page

Spread

Color:For the box which is at the top of my double page spread, in my mock up and drafts it was yellow. I used blue because it matched his shirt. I changed the text to white. I also changed the sub title “TALKS ABOUT ALBUM, AMBITIONS, FANS AND MORE…” from green font to white font. I changed the color of the pull quotes from black to pink. I changed the color of the sub title “HARRY GOWARD” from black to white as black would not have been clear on the navy blue.

LayoutI made the image smaller on the double page spread so that it wasn’t taking up the whole one page, as the image would have been blurry. I moved the position of the pull quotes so that they where at the right part of the article. I made it so that the sub titles where straight. FeaturesI did not want to include a small version of the masthead on my double page spread anymore because I had changed it. Fonts and TextI removed the quote “WHATS WRONG ….”.I changed the font used for “TALKS ABOUT….” from “HEYBOY!HEYGIRL!” to “BEBAS”. And ‘HARRY GOWARD” in “THE BOLD FONT” to ‘BEBAS” also.

Changes From First Draft To Finale Draft

Front Cover Changes

I have made the girl bigger so that she takes up most of the layout. I have reduced the size of the circle so there isn’t so much white space. And made the text smaller inside so that it fit. I have then repositioned the cover lines so that they didn’t cover her face. And sent the cover line “JESS” in the black box to back . I have moved the price and issue number to above the bar code. I added a drop shadow effect to the cover line “LOST IN NEW YORK”.

I changed the color of the cover line “INTERVIEW WITH HARRY GOWARD” , from black to white as it was hard to see with the background.

Content Page Changes

Content Page Changes Further Improvements:If I could improve my contents page further I would make it so that the circle of the male artist was not so big so that the text would not go over the image and part of the circle would not have been cut of. I would also have made sure that the ‘xx’’s next to ‘enjoy the issue’, did not sit on the line that separates the two columns. I would have added more of the pink love hearts. With the overlapping polaroid pictures, with the one on front I would have made it so that it would fit within the white frame. With the photo of the female artist, I would have cropped her out of the background. And I would have edited her top so that it was the same color as on the front cover. I would have put the contents page numbers in order and made it so that the text did not looked squashed having more space between the lines on the contents. Finally I would have made it so that the light pink text behind the text would have been clearer to read.

Changes from the first draft content page to the finale draft content page:I wanted to change my contents page to make it more conventional. I changed a lot as it was not up to high standards. Photos Firstly I removed the photo of the girl standing in front of the brick wall as this was bad photo quality. As well as one of the images of the male artist as I did not need two because the where very similar. I decided to put my male artist in a circle frame to make the layout more appealing to a young pop audience. I also added photos that I had taken myself and used them in the contents page after editing them to black and white with the yellow taxis on photo shop.

Contents page Changes Continued

Contents Section: I changed the font of the contents section to the same font which was on my front cover (Abadi MT condensed light). I also categorized my contents into ‘FEATURES’, ‘COVER STORY’, ‘INTERVIEW’ and ‘CHARTS’. And did the font for these slightly bigger and in pink. Along with changing the color of the page numbers to pink. I then used more relative contents lines which matched my flat plan. I changed the color of these to black. Background I wanted to use yellow in my magazine to go with the pink so instead of just a white background I added yellow to the bottom. I added a light grey triangle to the top which worked well with the city background, and the font color sub title. I used overlapping text in light pink in the background. Page Numbers I missed out the page number on my contents page so I made sure that I added this.

Inside this month:“INSIDE THIS MONTH” needed to be a lot larger and more pronounced. I increased the size and changed the color to white, black and grey to match the background on my front cover. I added an outline of the buildings in new york. I changed the font of this to Bebas, what has been used for the name “HARRY GOWARD”, as well.

Editors Letter One of my next big changes was making the editors letter shorter so that it did not take up the majority of space on the page, and so it would leave room for page numbers, as this was more important. I also decided not to use the pink and black boxes as this looked too harsh. Instead I just chose to put it in black text on a white background, this looked more like a professional magazine. I also added a drop cap to my editors letter in the “lobster” font which I had used for the masthead on the front cover.

Double Page Spread Changes

I changed the font size so that it filled the box and color to yellow. I then moved the position of the subtitle so that it was at the bottom of the box. I changed the font of the pull quotes to the thin font on the front cover (Michelucci). I have un-hyphenated the article and the pull quotes. I have added a page number to my double page spread. I have put a drops cap on the first question on my article. I have put the interview questions in Italics. And I have re-sized the image on the double page spread so that it is directly in the center.

I also made sure that the type of pink for the pull quotes was the same type of pink on the front cover. I moved them so that they did not sit directly on top of each other. I added lines to separate the columns. I have changed the the parts of his answer that will interest the reader to blue. I also wanted to add yellow into my magazine as I thought that this worked well with blue and pink.
