•ISAF is the IOC approved body of professional sailing competition. As an international entity, it relegates the production of competitive events to its sub-leagues located in countries across the world.

•Professional sailors are mostly independent athletes similar to golfers, tennis players, and boxers. They operate on their own in compete in different events for money.

•Professional sailing at an event usually involves competing in a number of races, placing as best as possible, and gathering enough points to place high enough overall.

•Prize money is given out for the best performers at these races.

•Pro sailors that compete well enough in events qualify for Olympic competition.

In fleet racing, the minimum number of racers is 4, with potentially hundreds of other racers.

In match racing, there are only 2 racers, placing first is a lot more important in this type of race.

Team racing can apply to match or fleet, as long as it involves multiple people operating the boat.
