EFI Jetrion Digital PressCase Study

Founded in 2006 by three partners from different fields, Logo Label Digital

Printing has developed over the years from a label distributor and reseller to

one of the industry’s most progressive label manufacturers. The company

has fully embraced the ways digital revolutionized the industry, providing

digital print capabilities with the same, or better, quality compared to traditional

presses. With Logo Label Digital Printing’s approach to production, short runs are

no longer outrageously priced and long production times have disappeared.

Customers no longer have to be satisfied with marginal quality when they need to

print on specialty materials or produce variable-data or serialized jobs.

The company serves clients with a “whatever you design, we can print”

approach. With digital production, Logo Label Digital Printing saves its customers

between $350-$700 per job, just by eliminating printing plates, pre-press fees and setup costs. The company

also provides a significant advantage in turnaround time, as it completes most jobs

in 3-5 days, compared to the 3-6 weeks often needed for traditionally printed jobs.

Profitable Growth with EFI Leads Logo Label Digital Printing to Second Jetrion Press Investment Challenge:

“We needed a press that allows us to target an underserved market: businesses that don’t need a lot of labels at a time, but require a sizable volume over the course of a year.”

–David Grossman Chief Operating Officer

Logo Label Digital Printing

In the nearly eight years it has been in business, Durham, N.C.-based Logo Label Digital Printing has blazed a new path for high-end label production. Where most label converters employ digital as an add-on to their analog, flexographic label offering, David Grossman and Tim Oates at Logo Label Digital Printing started by learning digital from the ground up.

As digital speeds, workflow and quality have increased over the years, so have Logo Label Digital Printing’s business opportunities. Never afraid to make the most of a new technological opportunity, the company ventured beyond the electrophotographic digital printing

commonly used in converting to add Jetrion®, the industry’s leading inkjet label converting platform, with a 6.5-inch wide EFI™ Jetrion 4000 digital press installed in 2011.

Solution:“We built the business to a point where our clients demanded faster turnaround for much larger runs then we ever ran previously. Our existing digital press could not keep up. If we did not add the Jetrion, we would have been walking away from a significant amount of business,” says Grossman.

The company’s digital operation gives its customer base, which includes, gourmet brewers, coffee roasters, wineries and other small to mid-size food, beverage and consumer product manufacturers, an ideal, just-in-time production solution for high-end labels that deliver exceptional shelf appeal. Digital printing, according to Grossman, is the only way to provide a visually appealing custom label in ways that meet customers’ ever-changing needs.

“Our customers can’t go to flexo because their ingredients might change often, or they need to introduce new flavors of products quickly, or because they have other items on their labels that change frequently,” explains Grossman.

“Digital printing eliminates the significant minimum runs lengths needed to justify the cost of plates, make-ready and die tooling in conventional flexo printing,” says Oates, Logo Label Digital Printing’s president. “For our customers, that means design, production and roll-out of a new product label can take days instead of weeks. Customers can get their products to market faster with an attractive label that has just as much pop and visual appeal as major brand name products.”

While digital adds more flexibility, Jetrion digital printing, with its proven, UV-curable inkjet imaging platform, adds a higher level of reliable, consistent and accurate production.

“Normally with digital printing, you might have a 45-minute start-up where you calibrate the press and waste 100 feet of material in the process,” Grossman explains. None of that is true with Logo Label Digital Printing’s first Jetrion press, however. Jobs are ready from the start, and the press stays consistent all day. Plus, the company can pull up a repeat job on the Jetrion 4000 and have it look just like it did the first time it was printed–something Grossman had not witnessed before with a digital press.

Solution:

“We used to buy and re-sell labels, but were getting bad product and service. With our Jetrion presses we can do the work better on our own.”

EFI Jetrion Digital PressCase Study

While short runs are Logo Label Digital Printing’s specialty, the company’s efficient production operations make it a cost-effective choice for higher-quantity versioned and regionalized jobs. In fact, the company has run orders as large as 280,000 labels on its Jetrion 4000.

Inkjet label printing with the Jetrion 4000 became such a key part of Logo Label’s business, the company decided to meet its continued growth by installing a second inkjet press, a 9-inch wide EFI Jetrion 4830, in October 2013.

Now, the company has more than twice the capacity in inkjet printing with no extra labor: One operator runs all of Logo Label Digital Printing’s presses, and a second operator runs a Rotoflex rotary finisher that laminates, under scores, die-cuts, strips and slits in a single pass. Both operators, as well as Grossman, are cross-trained to operate everything in the pressroom. All of the pre-press designers are cross-trained to operate the Jetrions.

Logo Label Digital Printing’s first Jetrion press has 50% more uptime than the company’s electrophotographic press. With that track record for reliability and two Jetrion engines to print on, Grossman anticipates moving even more of his work to inkjet digital printing.

The company is also increasing quality as it expands in inkjet. Logo Label Digital Printing’s Jetrion 4830 features an optional, highly opaque

Results:

“Want to know what we have to do to color calibrate our Jetrions? We turn them on. That’s it. And then we run lots of jobs.”

bright white ink. It is the best white ink Grossman has seen in digital printing, and it creates a huge advantage for the significant proportion of work the company does on clear substrates, as well as metallic foils and colored films.

Results:“We recently had a customer who was unhappy with the white ink available in digital printing,” Grossman says. “He came in to look at what we could offer on our new Jetrion 4830 press and, after running four feet of material, he said, ‘hands down, this is what I want!’”

Both of Logo Label Digital Printing’s Jetrion presses employ an intuitive EFI Fiery® RIP workflow that proved to be easy to learn and operate.

Grossman knows he had found his second production workhorse with the Jetrion 4830. It offers the same reliable, high-end UV inkjet production platform and it can match work perfectly.

“Normally it takes some time to get consistent output on two different presses,” Grossman notes. “But we’ve taken jobs from our Jetrion 4000 to our 4830, run a three-foot proof, and ended up with a dead-on match–on a brand-new machine without having to do a color calibration routine.”

With the consistent workflow and uniquely robust printing engine, Logo Label Digital Printing is on track to expand revenues by 20% in 2013, and has more options than ever before when it comes to future growth opportunities.
