Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, January 1st. The solemn feast of Mary, the Mother of God is always celebrated on January 1st and is usually a Holy Day of Obligation. Since it is celebrated on a Monday this year the American Bishops Conference has removed the obligation to attend Mass on that day. We have scheduled two Masses on that day – 9 am in Spanish and 11 am in English. We hope you can join us for the celebration of this great Marian feast.

New Year’s Mass Schedule Monday, January 1, 2018

9 am (Spanish) 11 am

Our parish is participating in Living the Eucharist this upcoming Lenten season. It begins the week of February 11, 2018. Ash Wednesday is February 14, 2018. This

spiritual renewal program provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith through learning more about the Eucharist, participating more fully in Sunday Mass, and living the Eucharist each day as disciples of Christ. Sign up Sundays will be held at Masses the weekends of January 6 and 13, 2018. Materials are now available for purchase. Please contact Lisa at (575) 921-1369 or Patricia at (575) 649-6971 for materials or for more information about this program. Please join us. Thank you.

True Reformers is a study crafted to teach about those who led the Church’s rebirth from the ashes of confusion caused by the Protestant Reformation. In these six sessions, participants will learn about the true benefactors of the human race: the saints. The saints of the Catholic Reformation show us just how powerful—and beautiful—is the human heart’s free response to God’s generous grace. To access “True Reformer” Log in to Formed.org. Click on “Study” at the top of the page. Next, click on the image like the one above. Tip: To watch on your TV use an HDMI cord from your laptop to the TV, a “Chromecast” device from your Android phone to the TV, or an “Apple TV” device from your iPhone to the TV.

Gracias.

Several months ago, at the time of the canonization of Mother Theresa, our parish council expressed a desire to change the name of our ministry to the needy – The St. Vincent de Paul ministry – to the St. Mother Theresa ministry. We had to wait until the 2018 collection envelopes were printed with the name change. Therefore, this parish ministry to help the needy with utility bills and prescription medicine will now be called the St. Mother Theresa ministry.

Every Wednesday morning we will give assistance to the first 15 people who come to the office seeking help. We keep a data base and we will give this assistance to a person once during a 12 month period.

A little over a year ago we also formed a small prayer team that offers to pray with the people seeking help. It is voluntary, but usually four or five individuals will accept the offer to pray with them. They may pray for themselves, their families or for whatever they have in mind. This prayer ministry has been very spiritually faithful. If you would like to help with the St. Mother Theresa ministry, please contact Mary Ann Tuten at 575-524-8563.

United in Ministry (U.I.M.)

If you still have not pledge and/or contributed to the United in the Ministry Campaign please do so within the next few weeks. We are members of the diocese as well as our parish. The diocese provides services that are essential to our local Catholic Church. The diocese promotes vocations, educates seminarians, provides retirement for priests, and provides the marriage tribunal services. It’s important that we help support these services through our contributions. If you need an U.I.M. envelope, you may find them in the wall rack near the church bathrooms.

Patron of Altar Servers Feast day is December 26

Stephen’s name means “crown,” and he was the first disciple of Jesus to receive the martyr’s crown. The apostles ordained seven deacons as needed helpers to look after the care of the widows and the poor, and Stephen is the most famous of these. St. Stephen spoke with such wisdom and grace that many of his hearers became followers of Jesus. His teachings aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues. Accused of blasphemy at his trial he made a long speech fiercely denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him. The saint spoke about Jesus, showing that He is the Savior God had promised to send. He scolded his enemies for not having believed in Jesus. At that, they rose up in great anger and shouted at him. But Stephen looked up to heaven and said that he saw the heavens opening and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. They dragged St. Stephen outside the city of Jerusalem and stoned him to death. The saint prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” Then he fell to his knees and begged God not to punish his enemies for killing him. His martyrdom was witnessed by Saul of Tarsus (later renamed Paul), a Pharisee who would later convert to Christianity and become an apostle. Traditionally, Stephen is invested with a crown of martyrdom; he is often depicted in art with three stones and the martyr's palm.
