Participants will be serenaded by the music of the Royal Barbados Police Force Band before the opening and during the meet-and-greet break after the ceremony. The Right Honourable Freundel Stuart QC, M.P., Prime Minister will deliver the Feature Address. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and the Minister of Tourism and International Transport will also address those attending. Other members of Cabinet, high-level officials from both the public and private sectors and a wide cross-section of Barbadians residing at home and abroad will be in attendance. � Workshop on Family History – Part 1

The Workshop on Family History will be facilitated by the Barbados Department of Archives and is aimed at introducing participants to genealogical research in Barbados. It will equip them with a basic knowledge of how to trace their family histories using the records and resources available at the Department of Archives. Examples of records will be on display and the staff of the Archives will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance. Ancestry expert Sandra Taitt-Eaddy will present Barbados family history research in general. A nominal fee of BDS$20 will be charged to those not registered at the BNC.

In this session the focus will be on the Barbados – Panama connection as participants are guided by ancestry expert Sandra Taitt-Eaddy in tracing their ancestral pathways between Barbados and Panama. Interactive and informative with a focus on resources related to the lives of Barbadians employed by the United States in the Panama Canal Zone. A nominal fee of BDS$20 will be charged to those not registered at the BNC or not attending Part 1.

� Pathways to and from Panama Sponsor: Barbados Tourism Authority

Come and experience the Barbados-Panama connection, first-hand, at this session celebrating the centennial anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. Approximately 60,000 Barbadians migrated to Panama to work on the canal and railway on a trek that promised economic advancement, but also brought displacement, disease and death for many. At home, during a tough

7

time in Barbados’ development, “Panama money” assisted many families and is often credited with giving impetus to the emergence of a Barbadian middle class. The Panamanian experience highlights the power of Barbadians overseas in providing a platform for a quantum leap in the development of our nation. Our citizens also made a significant contribution to the construction of one of the technological and engineering wonders of the modern era. It is most fitting therefore that we commemorate this centennial, both as a tribute to the industrious contribution of Barbadians to human civilization and also as a means of highlighting the enduring legacy of friendship, goodwill and cooperation between Barbados and Panama.

Barbadians residing overseas and those who have returned home from abroad are specially invited to this highly informative two-part discussion. The first, on “Returning Home: Building Pathways to Resettlement”, will explore the resettlement experience and how it may be improved. Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Customs and Excise Department, Customs Brokers, Car Dealers and Shipping Associations will be part of this dialogue.
