tion FEC Partner Goals: 2006

•Joined February 2006

•First year goals:– Vendors supply equipment with “Sleep”

feature enabled– “Sleep” features enabled on 100% of

existing monitors– Default to 2-side printing at copiers and

network printers (ongoing)(ongoing)

– Recycle 100% of non-reusable computers

tionEstimated impact –

purchase, operations and disposal

• FY06 purchases: $34.4M ($67M in FY05)• Estimated in service:

– 20,000 desktop systems (6300 desktops purchased in FY06)

– 5000 laptops– 4000 additional monitors– 30 months lifetime

• Estimated consumption:– ~13M kWh/yr, ~$518,000

tionPurchasing

• CRTs out, LCDs in – Energy Star compliant• FY06: Spent over $7.5 million to purchase:

– 2,822 desktop systems, 989 laptops, and additional 602 monitors, all of which are registered as EPEAT-Silver

• Preference for EPEAT Bronze or higher in JIT computer contract language

“Green” Printer matrix

• Complementary to EPEAT, customized to SNL/NM• Trial basis at this point• Entry per product, scored by supplier• “Binary” scoring system for green features:

– Energy Star– Blue Angel– Duplexing– Network capable

• Higher score means green choice• Qualifying scores and an icon to be added to

vendor catalog entries

tionEnergy Star enabled

• Network-based enterprise delivery of Common Operating Environment (COE) software programs– Immense savings on (no delivery of) boxed manuals

and software– At end of FY06, deployed new program to activate

“sleep” features on network-connected monitors• Within first week, 9300 computer stations impacted• Estimated 12,000 monitors were finally changed

• To raise awareness, several internal e-newsletters sent to give details on enabling and estimated savings.

tion FEC Partner Goals: 2007

1. Evaluate total cost of ownership for new purchases

2. Establish & promote policy to power off PCs when employees go home

3. Reuse or refurbish 25% of equipment

• Drawn from FEC annual award criteria• Seeking a 2007 Bronze or Silver award

tionPath Forward

•Develop an FEC fact sheet for internal awareness & training

•Pursue 16 objectives listed in FEC annual award criteria that were evaluated to be “achievable”–An additional 10 objectives “require

further investigation” for feasibility•Contract for e-waste recycling•New Energy Star designated equipment

tionCopiers are Printers too

• 10 Copiers enabled as network printers– Pre-existing capabilities not being used

– Pursuing fax and scan-to-email options– Objective: reduction of equipment fleet

• 450 copiers site-wide is long-term objective
