Progressive Agriculture Foundation2012 Annual Report

Progressive by Nature. Safety by Design.

www.progressiveag.org

“During our 18th year, the Progressive Agriculture Foundation® (PAF) made significant progress – and reached several notable milestones:

n More than 1.1 million participants educated since we began holding Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® programs

n 98,465 children and adults received safety education in one year

n 415 Safety Days held in one yearn $3 million in cash and in-kind

contributions donated by our generous sponsors in one year

n $4.57 million combined value of funding, goods, services and volunteer hours donated at the local level in one year

None of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of local Safety Day coordinators, volunteers and sponsors.

Improving Tools for Safety Day Coordinators

To make it easier for our hardworking volunteer coordinators, we redesigned the coordinator and database sections of www.progressiveag.org. Thanks to web design expertise from the Asmark Institute, our coordinators can now quickly and easily sign up for training, order supplies and submit reports.

Progressive by Nature. We’ve reached more than 1.1 million people with safety education through Progressive Agriculture Safety Days

The kids really enjoyed our Small Tool Station, as well as the First Aid Station. The kids are always intrigued by the presentation done by the Farmers with Disabilities. We had a paraplegic parent attend the Rollover Station and it really hit home with kids the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.”

— Tony Baliant 2012 Safety Day Coordinator Teulon, Manitoba

In 2012, PAF held 26 training sessions for Safety Day coordinators in 19 locations across the U.S. and Canada. Experienced Safety Day coordinators also could choose online training.

In 2011, we received a Fontanelle Hybrid grant to purchase ATV helmets for participants in the Safety Day. At the 2012 Safety Day, one boy and his mother came to tell us how much they appreciated

receiving the helmet last year, as he was wearing it when he had an incident with his ATV.”

— Kayla Hinrichs 2012 Safety Day Coordinator Ord, Nebraska

Adding a New School Nutrition ProjectDue to the increasing incidence of childhood obesity, in 2012 the Foundation developed a program component designed to help local schools identify and implement ways to provide children with healthier food choices.

Beginning in spring 2013, after their Safety Days, local coordinators can organize and hold nutrition workshops for select community members and schoolchildren. Those invited to participate in the workshops may include local principals, school cafeteria personnel, PTA/PTO members, Cooperative Extension Service nutritionists and local registered dietitians. Together, participants decide what nutrition goals they want to achieve, how to achieve them and how to measure success.

The project is being evaluated by the University of Alabama’s Department of Social Science Research. It has been made possible by funding from Novus International, Agrium, Farm Credit and MetLife Foundation.

Personal home pages provide each coordinator with details about their past Safety Days, the total number of people they’ve reached and the training sessions they’ve attended. The new

extensive database allows PAF staff members to keep sponsors informed about program progress.

Locating in the Heartland for a Stronger Future

Thanks to UMB Bank, we’ve established a central office for development and fundraising functions in Kansas City, Mo. The bank has generously allowed us to move into its downtown pARTnership place at a significantly reduced rent.

The centralized location sets PAF among many renowned agriculture-related businesses in the city and metropolitan area, with easy travel access to any corner of the country. The move puts the Foundation in a strong position to flourish and expand support for the Safety Day program.

Safety by Design. We’re increasing the number of Safety Days and expanding to South Americathrough a license agreement

Safe•ty (noun): Protected from

or unlikely to cause danger,

risk, or injury; designed to

prevent injury or damage, i.e.,

“a safety helmet.”

2012 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Sites

The Foundation reached another major safety milestone in 2012, as the number of Safety Days held in a year reached 415. Also for the first time, PAF licensed the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day program for use in South America. Licensed to Agrium, one of our generous Two Star sponsors, the program:

n Is being funded and managed by Agroservicios Pampeanos (ASP), Agrium’s retail business in Argentina

n Was adapted and translated into Spanish by Foundation staff working closely with ASP

n Trained 20 people to coordinate 2013 Safety Days in Argentina and Uruguay

A new license agreement with Agrium piloted 20 Safety Days in Argentina.

“A young man was saved by Safety Day education when his tractor sweep hit an electric pole. He knew what to do to keep himself from getting electrocuted.”

— Sherrie Nestor 2012 Safety Day Coordinator Cheyenne Wells, Colorado

2012 Progressive Agriculture Foundation SponsorsTwo organizations reached their 10th anniversary of supporting the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day program in 2012:

• Bayer CropScience, Research Triangle Park, N.C.

• Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, Birmingham, Ala.

One Star Sponsors ($60,000 - $99,999)

Achieving our Mission. Thanks to record-breaking support from our generous sponsors and committed volunteers

Mis•sion (noun): An important

assignment, commissioned to carry

out humanitarian work; a group

of people taking part in such

an assignment.

We Seek Funding to Further our Mission1. Building a $10 million endowment for the

Foundation, representing a permanent investment in the health and safety of rural families. An endowment will add a fourth component to our current funding strategy of corporate, foundation and individual annual contributions and will allow us to reach our long-term goals. We are interested in naming opportunities for endowment contributions.

Endowment contributions can be: n A general contribution. At specifically

determined levels, a contributor will not have to make an annual contribution to the Foundation.

n A donor–directed contribution to endow a specific PAF position, such as the chief administrative officer or a university educator to take a 12-month sabbatical and write educational resources for PAF.

n Perpetual funding for a specific lesson such as methamphetamine awareness, roadway safety or farm chemical safety, to name a few.

2. General support for more children to have a Safety Day experience.

3. Interactive, content-specific learning activities for our website.

4. New lessons for the Safety Day programs on bullying, hearing protection, oil field safety, outdoor safety and weather safety.

In 2012, we set another record, as 110 sponsors donated more than $3 million in cash and in-kind contributions for Safety Day programs. In addition, our hardworking local coordinators generated a total of $4.57 million in local funding, goods, services and volunteer hours donated.

How we deliver a $7.57 million Safety Day program:

The Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® is a program of the Progressive Agriculture Foundation®. The Progressive Agriculture Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code. Foundation contributions are tax deductible. Our IRS Tax ID number is 63-1166618. If you are interested in contributing to the Progressive Agriculture Foundation, please call 816-982-6730 or visit our website at www.progressiveag.org.

MissionProvide education and training to make farm, ranch and rural life safer and healthier for children and their communities.

VisionNo child would become ill, be injured or die from farm, ranch and rural activities.

PAF Accredited by Better Business BureauThe Progressive Agriculture Foundation was awarded the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance National Charity Seal in 2008, demonstrating its commitment to accountability and ethical practices. Just one-tenth of 1 percent of all U.S. charities are accredited by the BBB.

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance expects a minimum of 65 percent of a foundation budget be directed toward program-related costs. Our 2012 financial statements show that 87.5 percent of our total expenses are program-related, 6.7 percent are fundraising and 5.8 percent are administrative and overhead costs.

Our fundraising and administrative costs are 64 percent less than the BBB threshold.

“National charities that display the BBB Wise Giving Alliance seal can do so with pride,” says Art Taylor, president and CEO of the Alliance. “They are helping to increase donor confidence and strengthen public trust in giving.”
