One-Part, Semi-Self-Leveling SealantVulkem® 45SSLProduct DescriptionVulkem 45SSL is a one-part, moisture-curing, low-modulus polyurethane sealant. It provides exceptional wear and tear resistance required in high traffic areas.

Features and BenefitsVulkem 45SSL is a traffic rated, pourable, semi-self-leveling sealant with exceptional primerless adhesion and movement capability. Vulkem 45SSL is suitable for continuous immersion in non-chlorinated water and can be applied to damp and green concrete. The technology in Vulkem 45SSL provides the sealant with greater UV resistance and will not out gas.

UsesVulkem 45SSL is formulated for use in expansion joints in sidewalks, swimming pool decks, plazas, floors and any other horizontal surface with slopes up to 6% (e.g. 1 in. rise for every 16 in. run).

ColorsBlack, Buff, Gray, Limestone, White.

Packaging1-qt (890-mL) cartridges, 2-gal (7.6-L) and 5-gal (18.9-L) pails, and 55-gal (208-L) drums

Coverage Rate308 linear feet of joint per gallon for 1/4 in. x 1/4 in. (6mm x 6mm) joints. For specific coverage rates that include joint size, and usage efficiencies, visit our website usage calculator at www.tremcosealants.com.

Applicable Standards Vulkem 45SSL meets or exceeds the requirements of the following specifications:• ASTM C920, Type S, Grade P, Class 35, Use T, M, A, O and I (Class 2)• CAN/CGSB 19.13-M87, MC-1-25-B-N

Joint DesignVulkem 45SSL may be used in any horizontal joint designed in accordance with accepted architectural/engineering practices. Joint width should be 4 times anticipated movement, but not less than 1/4 in. (6mm).

Joint BackingClosed cell or reticulated polyethylene backer rod is recommended as joint backing to control sealant depth and to ensure intimate contact of sealant with joint walls. Backer rod needs to be properly friction fitted for use with self-leveling sealants to prevent leak out of sealant during cure. Where depth of joint will prevent the use of backer rod, an adhesive backed polyethylene tape (bond breaker tape) should be used to prevent three-sided adhesion. All backing should be dry at time of sealant application.

Sealant DimensionsW = Sealant width, D = Sealant depth,

EXPANSION JOINTS - The minimum width and depth of any sealant application should be 1/4 in. x 1/4 in. (6mm x 6mm).

The depth (D) of sealant may be equal to the width (W) of joints that are less than 1/2 in. wide. For joints ranging from 1/2 in. to 1 in. (13mm to 25mm) wide, the sealant depth should be approximately one-half of the joint width.

The maximum depth (D) of any sealant application should 1/2 in. (13mm). For joints that are wider than 1in. (25mm) contact your local Tremco Sales Representative or Tremco Technical Services.

Surface PreparationsSurfaces must be sound and clean. All release agents, existing waterproofing, dust, loose mortar, laitance, paints, or other finishes must be removed. This can be accomplished with a thorough wire brushing, grinding, sandblasting, or solvent washing, depending on the contamination.

Tremco recommends that surface temperatures be 40˚ F (5˚ C) or above at the time the sealant is applied. If sealant must be applied in temperatures below 40˚ F, please refer to the Tremco Guide for Applying Sealants in Cold Weather that can be found on our website at www.tremcosealants.com.

PrimingWhere deemed necessary, use Vulkem Primer #191 Low-VOC for porous surfaces, and TREMprime Non-Porous Primer for metals. Vulkem 45SSL typically adheres to concrete and stone without primers; however, Tremco always recommends that a mock-up or field adhesion test be performed on the actual materials being used on the job to verify the need for a primer. A description of the field adhesion test can be found in appendix X1 of ASTM C1193, Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants.

ApplicationVulkem 45SSL is easy to apply with conventional caulking equipment. Ensure that the backer rod is friction fitted properly

to provide the proper width-to-depth ratio and any primers have been applied. Fill the joint completely from the backer rod up, and allow the sealant to self-level to a smooth, even finish. For a cleaner finish, mask the sides of the joint with tape prior to filling.

Cure TimeAt 75° F (23.9° C), 50% R.H. a skin forms within 5 hours. Curing continues at a rate of approximately 1/16 in. (1.6mm) depth per day. The cure time will increase as the temperature and/or humidity decrease. A good rule of thumb is one additional day of cure for every 10° F decrease in temperature. Cure time can be increased by adding water when using pails of Vulkem 45SSL. Please refer to the Technical Bulletin on Vulkem 45SSL Activator that can be found on our website at www.tremcosealants.com.

Damp/Green ConcreteVulkem 45SSL can be applied to green concrete 24 hours after the forms have been removed. All concrete sealers or curing agents need to be removed by grinding before applying sealant. The concrete can be damp during application, but do not apply sealant where there is standing water in or close to the joints. It is recommended to catalyze with water when applying sealant on damp surfaces.

Clean upExcess sealant adjacent to the joint interface can be carefully removed with xylene or mineral spirits before the sealant cures. Any utensils used for tooling can also be cleaned with xylene or mineral spirits.

Limitations• Do not apply over contaminated surfaces.• Do not use in immersed conditions that contain chlorinated water.• Use with adequate ventilation.• Always utilize the accompanying MSDS for information on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and health hazards.

WarrantyTremco warrants its Products to be free of defects in materials, but makes no warranty as to appearance or color. Since methods of application and on-site conditions are beyond our control and can affect performance, Tremco makes no other warranty, expressed or implied including warranties of MERCHANTABILITY and FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, with respect to Tremco Products. Tremco’s sole obligation shall be, at its option, to replace or refund the purchase of the quantity of Tremco Products proven to be defective and Tremco shall not be liable for any loss or damage.

This can be accomplished with a thorough wire brushing, grinding, sandblasting, or solvent washing, depending on the contamination.

Tremco recommends that surface temperatures be 40 ˚F (5 ˚C) or above at the time the sealant is applied. If sealant must be applied in temperatures below 40 ˚F, please refer to the Tremco Guide for Applying Sealants in Cold Weather that can be found on our website at www.tremcosealants.com.

PrimingWhere deemed necessary, use Tremco Primer #171 for porous substrates and TREMprime Non-Porous Primer for metals and plastics. Dymeric 240FC typically adheres to common construction substrates without primers; however, Tremco always recommends that mock-up or field adhesion test be performed on the actual materials being used on the job to verify the need for a primer. The field adhesion test can be found in appendix X1 of ASTM C1193, Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants.

ApplicationMix in accordance with instructions on the pail using the entire pre-measured curative packet and your selected Universal Color Pak. One color pack should be used with 1.5-gal pails and 2 color packs should be used in the 3-gal pails. Mix all three parts for a minimum of 6 minutes, scrapping the sides of the pail and until there are no color striations. A color pak is not required for the pretint version.

Ensure the backer rod is friction fitted properly and any primers have been applied. Apply sealant with conventional caulking equipment filling the joint from the backer rod up. Immediately tool the sealant with a spatula to ensure intimate contact with the joint walls. Dry tooling is always preferred, although xylene can be used in limited amounts to slick the spatula if needed. For a cleaner finish, mask the sides of the joint with tape prior to filling.

Cure Time:At 72 ˚F (22 ˚C) Dymeric 240FC will reach full cure in about 48 hours. As the temperatures decrease, the cure time will increase. A good rule of thumb is an additional 24 hours for every 10°F decrease in temperature.

Clean upExcess sealant and smears adjacent to the joint interface can be carefully removed with xylene or mineral spirits before the sealant cures. Any utensils used for tooling can also be cleaned with xylene or mineral spirits.

Limitations• Do not apply Dymeric 240FC to damp or contaminated surfaces.• Always utilize the accompanying MSDS for information on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and health hazards.• For best results, always use a Universal Color Pak.

WarrantyTremco warrants its sealants to be free of defects in materials, but makes no warranty as to appearance or color. HOW TO USEPlease consult the Dow CorningAmericas Technical Manual, Form No.62-1112, for detailed information onstate-of-the-art application methodsand joint design. Please contact yourlocal Dow Corning Sales ApplicationEngineer for specific advice.

Preparatory WorkBonding surfaces on both new andremedial jobs must be sound, clean, dry, and free of dust, frost and soapresidue.

Wipe the surfaces using a clean, oil-free rag saturated with solvent such asxylol, toluol or methyl ethyl ketone.

CAUTION: When using flammablesolvents, keep away from heat andopen flames. Use only with adequateventilation. Avoid prolonged or

repeated skin contact. Always followsolvent container label instructions.

Do not flood surfaces with moresolvent than necessary. Do not cleansurfaces with soap, detergent or anywater-based cleaner. Make sure thatapparently clean surfaces are notcovered with a thin film ofconstruction dust.

PrimingAlthough primers are not usuallyrequired on ceramic, glass and glazedsurfaces, it is possible that certainproducts should be primed formaximum adhesion. A bead of thesilicone sealant on the substratematerial to test adhesion prior togeneral job use is alwaysrecommended.

MaskingIf bead lines of exact shapes arerequired, use masking tape beforeapplying Dow Corning 786 SiliconeSealant. Remove immediately after abead is completed and before a “skin”forms (5-10 minutes).

ApplicationDow Corning 786 Silicone Sealantcan be applied directly from thecaulking cartridge with either an air-operated or hand-operated cartridgegun. Do not break the cartridge sealuntil just before use.

After applying the sealant and a skinhas formed, do not disturb the joint for48 hours. A previously openedcartridge may be reused by removingthe cured plug of sealant from the tip.

ToolingTooling is recommended and, ifpossible, should be completed in onecontinuous stroke.

Tool the joints within 10 minutes ofapplication. Remove masking tapebefore a surface skin begins to form.Once a surface skin begins to form, itwill be torn off when the tape isremoved, leaving a rough surface.

Clean-UpExcess sealant should be cleaned offtools and nonporous surfaces while itis in the uncured state, by using acommercial solvent such asxylol, toluol or methyl ethyl ketone.

MaintenanceCured sealant can be cleaned withsoap and water. If sealant becomesdamaged, replace damaged portion.

Emergency Overview

Off-White. Non-sag gunnable paste. May cause slight irritation to the respiratory system. May cause nausea, headaches, and dizziness. May cause drowsiness, weakness, and fatigue. May cause allergic respiratory sensitization. Leave area to breathe fresh air. Avoid further overexposure. If symptoms persist, get medical attention. Move to fresh air. If required, artificial respiration or administration of oxygen can be performed by trained personnel. Acute Potential Health Effects/ Routes of Entry

Inhalation : May cause slight irritation to the respiratory system. May cause nausea, headaches, and dizziness. May cause drowsiness, weakness, and fatigue. May cause allergic respiratory sensitization.

Eyes : Direct contact may cause mild irritation. Ingestion : May cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, and vomiting. Skin : May cause sensitization resulting in irritation, itching and redness. Aggravated Medical Conditions

Pre-existing eye, skin and respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure.

Chronic Health Effects

Overexposure may cause dermatitis, asthma, skin and respiratory sensitization and decreased lung function. Prolonged or repeated exposure to butyl benzyl phthalate may cause reduced body weights and adverse effects on the liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, and reproductive organs. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified ceramic fiber, fibrous glasswool, and mineral wool (rockwool and slagwool) as possible human carcinogens (Group 2B) based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animals but insufficient data in humans. In the National Toxicology Program's (NTP) 7th Annual Report on Carcinogens (1994), respirable glasswool was classified as reasonably anticipated to be carcinogenic. OSHA considers fibrous glass dust a nuisance dust. Fibrous glass can cause dermatitis, local irritation. Fillers are encapsulated and not expected to be released from product under normal conditions of use.

Target Organs: Skin, Eye, Ingestion, Lung

PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET

MILE HIGH FOAM® Closed Cell Polyethylene Backer Rod

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Flexible polyethylene is an "article", not a chemical, as defined in 29 CFR

1910.1200©. It does not require a Safety Data Sheet under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard. As a

service to our customers, however, Backer Rod Mfg. Inc. has produced this Product Information Sheet.

SECTION 1 - PRODUCT AND COMPANY IDENTIFICATION

SECTION 2 - PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS

343°F (ASTM D 1929)

Since flexible polyethylene foam is a solid, physical characteristics such as boiling point, vapor pressure, vapor

density evaporation rate, etc., do not apply.

Manufacturer Name

SECTION 3 - FIRE HAZARD INFORMATION

Closed cell low density polyethylene foam (LDPE)

www.bayfoamproducts.com

Cellular flexible material, dark gray or black in color. May also be in various

colors.

Stable. No hazardous polymerization will occur in normal use.

Prolonged exposure to temperatures in excess of 196°F may cause some loss

of volatile components (e.g., flame retardants) through evaporation.

Unprotected polyethylene foam will discolor and degrade under prolonged

exposure to UV light.

Solvent resistance will vary with solvent type.

SECTION 4 - HEALTH HAZARDS

SECTION 5 - HANDLING AND STORAGE

Keep foam away from sparks, naked lights, open flames, exposed electrical elements, or other ignition

sources. Smoking should be forbidden in areas where material is stored or processed.

Maintain adequate sprinkler protection where large volumes of foam are kept (e.g., warehouses,

fabrication areas and storage rooms). Check for compliance with insurance regulations, local building codes

or other legal requirements.

Fire-fighting personnel must be equipped with self contained breathing

apparatus (SCBA) and fire-fighting clothing.

Skin Contact Non irritating

Once ignited, polyethylene foam is difficult to extinguish. Foam fires that

appear to be extinguished may smolder and re-ignite. Always have fire

officials determine wheather a fire has been extinguished.

WARNING: Polyethylene Foam will burn if exposed to an open flame or

other sufficient heat source. Do not expose polyethylene foam to open

flames or any other direct or indirect high temperature ignition source such

as burning operations, welding, space heaters or naked lights.

MILE HIGH FOAM® Closed Cell Polyethylene Foam Backer Rod

SECTION 3 - FIRE HAZARD INFORMATION cont.

Water spray, dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide

Piles of foam dust can be readily ignited and present a potential fire hazard.

High concentrations of foam dust in the air can be a potential explosion hazard

if exposed to flame, sparks, or other ignition sources.

Once ignited, polyethylene foam will burn rapidly, releasing great heat and

consuming oxygen at a high rate. In an enclosed space the resulting

deficiency of oxygen will present a danger of suffocation to the occupants.

Hazardous gasses released by the burning foam can be incapacitating or fatal

to human beings if inhaled in sufficient quantities.

SECTION 7 - EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES

MILE HIGH FOAM® Closed Cell Polyethylene Foam Backer Rod

SECTION 5 - HANDLING AND STORAGE cont.

Be aware that terms sometimes used to describe polyethylene foam, like "fire retardant" and "flame

resistant", do not mean fire safety under all conditions. Flammability ratings from small-scale laboratory

tests are not to be taken as an indication of the material's behavior under actual fire conditions.

SECTION 6 - PERSONAL PROTECTION AND EXPOSURE CONTROLS

Mechanical ventilation should be considered in operations that generate

abnormal quantities of foam dust, or where thermal decomposition of the

foam occurs (e.g., hot-wire cutting, heat sealing, hot stamping and flame

laminating.)

Unless exposure to foam dust is anticipated, dust masks, goggles, and gloves

are not required. Long sleeves are recommended if arms are repeatedly

rubbed against foam.

Never use foam as an exposed interior wall or ceiling finish

Maintain sufficient aisle space to permit access for fire-fighting equipment and personnel to all foam

storage areas.

Do not allow cuttings or foam scrap to accumulate.
