PROBLEM

Health care standards has increased significantly in the Indian subcontinent in last few decades but people living in rural areas and slums are still living with substandard health provisions.

Considering Personal-Family-Community Hygiene & Health as most important part of healthy living Jyoti Social Foundation took the initiative to educate children & families to create awareness. As bad practice and lower standards of basic hygiene leads to diarrhea, typhoid, respiratory tract infections such

as pneumonia or bronchitis, chronic sinus infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, chronic acid reflux,

and liver or kidney problems it is very important to create the awareness about the best hygiene practices and enlighten the various aspects of personal, family and community hygiene.

“Summer Health & Hygiene Awareness Programme” was directed mainly for the children’s of slums as they suffer a lot due to lack of awareness, uneducated parents and substandard hygiene practices. Hardly parents care to educate children to wash hands properly; brush regularly, drink plenty water and hardly they wash vegetables and utensils properly.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

1. Develop a strategy to better integrate Personal-Family-Community hygiene practices into life of peoples dwelling in slums a) Educating about basic Personal Hygiene b) Educating about basic Family Hygiene c) Educating about basic Community Hygiene d) Distribution of toothbrushes, Cool Drinks and educating about best health practices for summer to stay healthy as temperature in the region is crossing 40 degree centigrade. e) Conduct survey of children’s their age group, dropout rates and economic conditions. This was for evaluation of team for future event, educational programs and scholarships.

EVALUATION

Response: We received full support with enthusiasm from the society and the engagement was successful.

Effective, efficient and equitable use of financial and other resources: As the whole project was conducted within the range of few hundred Indian Rupee.

Recognition of actual changes and progress was appreciable.

Success factors: Considerable no of citizens inhabiting slums, willingness to learn and participate

Need for improvement or where expected outcomes are unrealistic: Funding was lacking. If properly funded similar initiatives & program conducted by Jyoti Social Foundation will be able to reach all the slum inhabitants and increase the standards of oral health care to desired level in developing countries like India.

Validation for project staff and partners that desired outcomes are being achieved: Till date we meet all our desired results with a small team
