Blue Mosque Built in 1465, the Blue Mosque of Tabriz was once one of the most famous mosques in the world thanks to its sophisticated mosaics. Sadly however once of Tabriz’s frequent earthquakes decimated the site in 1772 leaving only a few portions standing. Restoration is still ongoing, but you can still spot patches of the original turquoise tiling and the entire site is defiantly worth visiting. Tabrīz has several notable ancient buildings. The Blue Mosque, or Masjed-e Kabūd (1465–66), has long been renowned for the splendour of its blue tile decoration. The citadel, or Ark, which was built before 1322 on the site of a collapsed mosque, is remarkable for its simplicity, its size, and the excellent condition of its brickwork. Also noteworthy are the remains of the 12-sided tomb of Maḥmūd Ghāzān, ruler of the Mongol dynasty in Iran.

The founder of the Sassanid Dynasty Ardashir I (180-242 CE) rebuilt the city on both sides of the river, designating one half for God and the other half for himself and naming it Hormoz-Ardashir. In the Sassanid era (224–651 CE) the city became a center for textile production and a trade hub.During the Sassanid era, an irrigation system and several dams were constructed, and the city prospered. Examples of Sassanid-era dams are Band-e Bala-rud, Band-e Mizan, Band-e Borj Ayar and Band-e Khak. The city replaced Susa, the ancient capital of Susiana, as the capital of what was then called Khuzestān.The city had two sections; the nobles of the city lived in one part while the other was inhabited by merchants. Ahvaz was devastated in the bloody Mongol invasions of the 13th and 14th centuries and subsequently declined into a mere village. The dam and irrigation channels, no longer

maintained, eroded and finally collapsed early in the 19th century. In the 1880s, under Qajar rule, the Karun River was dredged and re-opened to commerce. A newly built railway crossed the Karun at Ahvaz. The city again became a commercial crossroads, linking river and rail traffic. The construction of the Suez Canal further stimulated trade. A port city was built near the old village of Ahvaz, and named Bandar-e-Naseri in honor of Nassereddin Shah Qajar.Oil was found near Ahvaz in the early 20th century, and the city once again grew and prospered as a result of this new found wealth. At this time, the newly founded Ahvaz was named Nâseri, in honor of its founder Nassereddin Shah Qajar. Afterwards, during the Pahlavi period, it resumed its old name, Ahvaz. The government of Khūzestān Province was transferred there from Shushtar in 1926. The trans-Iranian

Trail of TearsThe Trail of Tears is a path that over 16,000 Native Americans walked after the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830. European settlers had always wanted to own Native American land, but when Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1829, he began to pass laws that forced Native Americans living east of the Mississippi to move west of the Mississippi so that he could use their land. Several of the Native American tribes resisted the take-over of their ancestral lands, but were forcibly removed by local and state military forces. This removal is called the "Trail of Tears", because over 4,000 people died of starvation, disease, injury, and exhaustion during the journey, which crossed nine different states over several thousand miles of land and water. When they arrived in the area, the government designated Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, several of the tribes reorganized and continued to advocate for their human rights.

The Homestead ActThe Homestead Act was a document signed in 1862 that allowed settlers to claim land in the west. The Homestead Act turned over acres and acres of public land to private citizens.Homesteads, the name for the large spaces of land that people could claim, could be up to 160 acres large. Almost anyone could apply to claim land under theHomestead Act – in order to be eligible, a person only had to be 21 or older and the head of a household. This meant that people of all types were afforded the right to claim their homestead. Women, immigrants, African-Americans and other groups of people who did not have many rights at the time were able to legally own the land claimed by the Homestead Act. After living on the land for five years, the land would officially become theirs. Most homesteads were in The Great Plains, in what are now states like Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. Most homesteaders (people who claimed land under the act) used their land for farming.

People who lived on the homestead often did not have much money, and lived in small, one-room sod houses, or houses made of soil and dirt. The Homestead Act was one of several events responsible for making the western U.S. what it is today. It remained in effect until 1976. In Alaska, laws allowed people to claim homesteads until 1986!

A dónde ir?
