PRINCIPAL’S PIECE 28 AUGUST 2013 Dear Parents and Caregivers, This week is senior exam week and while some people call them practise or mock exams they are the real thing. Some of the assessments are for internal standards that they have completed, the other will give an indication of which level the student is at for their external assessments at the end of the year and for any reason they are not able to sit the end of year exam then the results from these current assessments will be used. The staff will mark these assessments and get them back to the students as soon as they can and I thank them for the time and effort they put into this exam week. Good luck to the Year 7 and 8 students going to the Christchurch tournament on Thursday and next week is secondary school tournament week. We have teams going to participate in Netball, Hockey, Netball and Basketball tournaments. This year we are lucky that these events are close by in Ashburton and Christchurch. These are a great experience for our students and I am always pleased at the positive comments about the way our students behave and perform at these events. Again thank you to the staff and parents who will help make these events a success. We welcome Darren Ritchie back from Hong Kong where he was one of the New Zealand representatives at the International Young Enterprise event. I understand his team was one of the three New Zealand teams that made the grand final. I look forward to him sharing more about his experiences when he finishes his week of exams. John Schreurs Principal MOUNT HUTT COLLEGE FAIR The Big Chair Fair – Saturday September 21st 11.00 am – 3. 00 pm The school fair this year has been themed ‘Big Chair Fair’ as funds raised will go towards to upgrade of seating in the school assembly hall to replace the current forms with more comfortable and modern seating. The fair is about more than fundraising. Each form class is organising a stall and the preparation, planning and running of the stall on the day provides opportunity for students to develop their key competencies in a practical situation. Most form classes will need some parent assistance at some stage. Form classes are planning a great variety of food and drink, activities, entertainment and sales of goods. Form Teachers are supporting the students in their classes as they prepare for 21st September. During the fair there will be a house competition section with teams of students from the four houses competing against each other for competition points. It has been suggested that the ‘old hall forms’ should be a part of the activities in this competition. An auction is planned and for this to be a good fundraiser it is important to have good items to be auctioned. If you are able to assist with procuring items for the auction then please contact the Principal Mr John Schreurs. At previous auctions popular items have included art, craft items, weekend use of a bach/holiday home, firewood and various mystery items. The fair is also a way for our school community and our wider community to come together and enjoy activities, entertainment and food. This is an excellent way for students to grow their sense of community and PRIDE in their school and community. More details to follow as we get closer to the 21st. Fingers crossed for a good day! Subject Choice for 2013: the Careers NZ website has very good information to help with this process. Go to

www.careers.govt.nz, select “Education and Training” then “Choosing school subjects.” There is lots of other very useful advice in this section for students and parents as well.

Year 12 Employment Seminar: We will be holding our annual Year 12 Employment

Skills Seminar 26 & 27 September. The major theme of this seminar is preparing for Job Interviews and undergoing a mock interview. The seminar will be held during normal school hours at the United Club Rooms at the Methven Domain. All students are to dress in a way appropriate for a job interview on both days. Day one will focus on job interviews. While the mock interviews are taking place on day two, there will be a programme of presentations including: Dr Chris Gallavin Associate Professor, Dean and Head of the Law School at Canterbury University, will speak on and opportunities and challenges for young people today, and the responsibilities that come with these. A presenter from “Attitude” will speak on relationships, social issues, peer pressure and mental health issues facing young people. It is good to see some students have been to the school website and found the CV template on the Careers wiki and are working on their CVs.

Student Loans and Allowances

Help students get sussed with StudyLink 16 September

The session will enable students to find out what help they may be eligible for and support them through the online application process to make sure this is organised before they finish school. Applying early will ensure they have time to gather the required evidence that we need to complete their application/s so they’ll have one less thing to worry about before they head off to study in 2014.

Students need to bring the following things with them to ensure that they are able to complete their application.

Email address.

Bank account number and account holder name.

Inland Revenue number (they should contact Inland Revenue if they don’t have one).

Page 3: PRRI INNC CIPAALL SS APPIIEECEE 2288 AUUGGUUSSTT 22001133 Dear …mounthuttcollege.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/... · 2013-08-30 · PRRI INNC CIPAALL’’SS APPIIEECEE 2288

The name of the education provider they’ll be studying at (if they change their mind, we can update this later. We don’t need to know what course they’ll be doing yet).

The name and address of an alternative contact person for their Student Loan (this is someone who Inland Revenue can contact about their Student Loan).

PPRROOCCEEDDUURREESS FFOORR AATTTTEENNDDAANNCCEE//AABBSSEENNTTEEEESS ((OOuuttlliinneedd iinn SSttuuddeenntt DDiiaarryy)).. Please remember to phone the student absentee line if your child is sick/absent. The number is 3028437 ext 1. We

need your child’s name and the REASON for being absent. If not, then a note explaining the absence in the school diary is necessary on return to school otherwise if we do not hear from you, your child will be marked as truant.

For planned absences over three days or more, a written permission letter to the Principal is required. This is a letter requesting permission to be absent not a letter telling us your son/daughter will be absent.

After absences (and this includes extra-curricular activities, e.g. sport and subject field trips) you are expected to catch up on work missed.

If your parents want you to do a message in town at second lunch, bring a parent permission note to the office at lunch time. You will be issued with an exit pass. Fill in the IN and OUT book before leaving and returning. You will not be allowed to be up town unless you have a note/permission from home.

If you need to leave school during the day, please report to the office on departure with your parent permission note to sign out. (If you return the same day you must sign in on your return).

Wednesday Afternoon sports Bin – students unable to participate in Wednesday sports period need a parent note outlining reason to show to your sports teacher. Your Sports teacher gives you a Sports Bin referral.

CHECK LIST FOR PLANNED ABSENCE (STUDENT) Have your parents been granted permission from the Principal, prior to you being away from school? Are you up to date with all your subjects? Have you taken the work plan around to your subject teacher prior to being away from school? Have you got a buddy to work with when you are back in class to help

EENNTTEERRTTAAIINNMMEENNTT BBOOOOKK Due to the high demand for the Entertainment Book we have ordered more, so these are still available from the office, don’t miss out!

M*A*S*H Out of School Programme for 5 – 14 years Survey M*A*S*H (My After School Headquarters) is an After School and Holiday Programme provider for 5- 14 year olds, based in Christchurch. M*A*S*H currently operate four After School and five Holiday Programmes and would like to establish a programme for the Methven community, potentially based at Methven Primary School. M*A*S*H is fully CYFs and WINZ approved which enables parents to access the OSCAR subsidy. There are several subsidy levels available, depending on the family income and number of children, which can dramatically reduce the programme fees (to as low as approx. $4.50 per child per day). We would love to get an indication of the community requirements for this type of programme so please click here to complete a brief survey to get an indication of your thoughts. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GWRVPC5

UUCCEE TTHHAAIILLAANNDD VVIISSIITT -- 1111tthh ttoo 2299tthh OOCCTTOOBBEERR 22001133 Following our successful short term programme with the UCE Thailand Group in April we are holding the same programme again in October. Students will be aged 11-18 years approx. Those that are U15 are doubled up while single placements are made for those that are older. There are restrictions on opposite genders, depending on age, in the home. This is a great opportunity for a cultural experience and can help as a fundraiser for your son/daughter if they are attending a school tournament/exchange etc. Board of $200 per week per student will be paid. Students will need all meals provided. Students will have a programme at school each week day involving learning English, learning about New Zealand, experience of NZ school life and of the local district through activities and trips. Weekends are generally yours to do with what you wish and gives you time to share your unique NZ culture with your international visitors. If you would be keen to host a Thai student or two for two and a half weeks please contact [email protected].
