Introduction to Psychology - John GabrieliEven the simplest things are interpretations of the world around us.The context determines how we see thingsExpectation drives your interpretation, the perspective guidesthe interpretation. We can pay attention to a limited number ofthings at the time. Our mind does things automatically. Mind lets us do aa lot of things. We are bad of predicting of what makes us happy or sad. Tough gap values we espouse and what do in realityhttp://www.richardgregory.org/cv.htmhttp://www.learner.org/series/discoveringpsychology/brain/index.html2 -Psychology - Science and ReasearchHow do you know what is true?Authority, parents, notebooksRepetition, tenacityA prioriScientific AnalysisConsensus among scientistsTest things that are falsifiableThere's many things things that science cannot address. What makes Something an experiment?dependent variable - what you measure the outcomeIndependet variable what you varyThe older the mother is the increasing the likelihood of DOwn's SyndromePraise the work not the intelligenceYou have to try really hard to be good at somethingIf you give something hot to someone he will think that you are warm persona hot coffee for exampleThe three reasearch designs are descriptive research, correlational research and experimental research Descriptive research provides a description or snapshot of the currentstate of affairs or some phenomenon in order to understand the nature ofthat phenomenon. Advantages of descriptive research is that it providesa complete picture of the situation and is often real world or eventsthat are naturally occurring. Disadvantages are that there is no statisticalrelationship, beyond anecdotal evidence, thata re studied, causal influencecannot be inferred, and it is difficult to determine which variables are influential in the study due to the inability to repeatedly measure all ofone variables and to even know what all of the variables are.Correlational research tests relationship between two or more variables.Advantages of correlational research are statistical tests to show therelationship is unlikely to occur due to chance, the ability to make predictions about future outcomes and it can be used to assess real-worldevents. The main disadvantage is that no causal relationship can be inferred from the relationship of the variables.Experimental research is used to assess the causal relationship betweentwo or more variables by manipulating independent variables and testingthe causal impact on a dependent variable. While it is more difficult toassess real-world events, experimental research has all of the other advantages of correlational research in addition to the ability forcausal inference. Disadvantages are the difficulty to manipulate importantvariables or many variables at one time and the cost of conducting experiments. http://www.badscience.net/ - Ben Goldacrehttp://discovermagazine.com/authors?name=Neuroskeptic - Anotherblog
