If you.....

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give youany time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment

If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

...Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!

health matters!

Things to Know whenHiking in Spring withYour Dog.Spring hiking often means MUD! Whetheryou are out in the wilderness or on a citytrail, melting snow, early season rains, ormountain run off all spell fun in the mud fordogs. Dogs seem to have no aversion toblasting through puddles or forging aheadalong a muddy trail.

Things to watch out for when hiking inthe spring:

1) Ice on rivers or lakes. The worstthing I have ever witnessed was a doggoing under the ice. As ice around theedges of lakes and rivers thaws, it is veryunstable and easy to break through. Keepyou dog away from melting ice. That wayyou will avoid having to mount a rescuemission or deal with a worse tragedy.

2) Wildlife. If you are hiking in the moun-tains and areas where bears hibernate, they are coming out of hibernation aroundthe end of March. Be alert when hiking andmake lots of noise. Watch for signs of bearactivity and make sure your dog is onleash. If you see signs indicating a bearmay be in the area, LEAVE!

3) Rising water levels. This is especiallyimportant in mountain areas where snowat higher elevation is starting to melt andcausing rivers to rise and possibly overflow their banks. Small creeks can quicklyturn into rushing torrents of glacial meltwater.

4) Mud. Most dogs aren’t bothered bymud and some actually seek it out to playin! Just watch for slippery areas for you

and your dog. If you drove to your hike, bring a towel or two to wipe you dog offbefore getting back in the car.

5) Ticks. Always check your dog andyourself to make sure no unwanted hitch-hikers have attached themselves. Tuckyour pants in your socks to prevent ticksattaching to your ankles.

BREED STANDARD

Origin and Purpose

It is generally accepted that the Chinese Shar-Peioriginated during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220AD) in the village of Dah-Let near the South ChinaSea. These dogs were all purpose working dogs toguard the family, farms and temples.

General Appearance

An alert, dignified, active, compact dog of mediumsize and substance, square in profile, close-cou-pled, the well proportioned head slightly but notoverly large for the body. The short, harsh coat, theloose skin covering the head and body, the smallears, the “hippopotamus” muzzle shape and thehigh set tail impart to the Shar-Pei a unique lookpeculiar to him alone. The loose skin and wrinklescovering the head, neck and body are superabun-dant in puppies but these features may be limitedto the head, neck and withers in the adult.

Temperament

Regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish, essentially independent andsomewhat standoffish with strangers, but extremein his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei standsfirmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature.

Size, Proportion, Substance

The height is 18 to 20 inches (45-50 cm) at thewithers. The weight is 40 to 60 pounds (18-27 kg).The dog is usually larger and more square bodiedthan the bitch but both appear well proportioned.Proportion: The height of the Shar-Pei from theground to the withers is approximately equal to thelength from the point of breast-bone to the point ofrump.

Coat and Colour

Coat-The extremely harsh coat is one of the distin-guishing features of the breed. The coat is abso-lutely straight and offstanding on the main trunk of

the body but generally lies somewhat flatter on thelimbs. The coat appears healthy without beingshiny or lustrous. Acceptable coat lengths mayrange from extremely short “horse coat” up to the“brush coat”, not to exceed one inch in length at thewithers. A soft coat, a wavy coat, a coat in excessof 1" (2.5cm) in length at the withers or a coat thathas been trimmed is a major fault. One coat type isnot to be preferred over the other. The Shar-Pei isshown in its natural state. Colour-Only solid coloursand sable are acceptable and are to be judged onequal basis. A solid coloured dog may have shad-ing, primarily darker down the back and on theears. The shading must be variations of the samebody colour (except in sables) and may includedarker hairs throughout the coat. A pigmented dogmay have a darker mask on the face.

Head

Large, slightly but not overly, proudly carried andcovered with profuse wrinkles on the foreheadcontinuing into side wrinkles framing the face. EyesDark, small, almond-shaped and deep set, display-ing a scowling expression. In the dilute coloureddogs the eye colour may be lighter. Ears Extremelysmall rather thick, equilateral triangles in shape, slightly rounded at the tips, edges of the ear maycurl. Ears lie flat against the head, are set wideapart and forward on the skull, pointing toward theeyes. The ears have the ability to move. Skull - Flatand broad, the stop moderately defined. Muzzle -One of the distinct features of the breed. It is broadand full with no suggestion of snipiness. The lengthfrom nose to stop is approximately the same asfrom stop to occiput. Nose Large and wide anddarkly pigmented, preferably black but any colournose comforming to the general coat colour of thedog is acceptable. In dilute colours, the preferrednose is self-coloured. Darkly pigmented creamShar-Pei may have some light pigment either in thecentre of their noses or on their entire nose. The lipsand top of muzzle are well padded and may causea slight bulge at the base of the nose. Tongue, Roofof Mouth, Gums and Flews Solid bluish-black ispreferred in all coat colours except in dilute colours, which have a solid lavender pigmentation. A spot-ted tongue is a major fault. A solid pink tongue isa disqualification (Tongue colors may lighten due toheal stress; care must be taken not to confusedilute pigmentation with a pink tongue). Teeth -Strong, meeting in a scissors bite. Deviation froma scissors bite is a major fault.

Neck

Neck - Medium length, full and set well into theshoulders. There are moderate to heavy folds ofloose skin and abundant dewlap about the neck andthroat.

Forequarters

Shoulders - Muscular, well laid back and sloping.Forelegs - When viewed from the front, straight,

moderately spaced, with elbows close to the body. When viewed from the side, the forelegs are straight, the pasterns are strong and flexible. The bone issubstantial but never heavy and is of moderatelength. Removal of front dewclaws is optional. Feet- Moderate in size, compact and firmly set, notsplayed.

Body

Topline The topline dips slightly behind the withers, slightly rising over the short, broad loin. Chest -Broad and deep with the brisket extending to theelbow and rising slightly under the loin. A level, roached or swayed topline shall be faulted. Back -Short and close-coupled. Croup - Flat, with thebase of the tail set extremely high, clearly exposingan uptilted anus.

Muscular, strong, and moderately angulated. Themetatarsi (hocks) are short, perpendicular to theground and parallel to each other when viewedfrom the rear. Hind dewclaws must be removed.Feet as in front. Tail - The high set tail is acharacteristic feature of the Shar-Pei. A low tailshall be faulted. The tail is thick and round at thebase, tapering to a fine point and curling over toeither side of the back. The absence of a completetail is a disqualification.

Gait

The movement of the Shar-Pei is to be judged at atrot. The gait is free and balanced with the feettending to converge on a centre line of gravity whenthe dog moves at a vigorous trot. The gait combinesgood forward reach and a strong drive in thehindquarters. Proper movement is essential.

Major Faults

1. Deviation from a scissors bite.2. Spotted tongue.3. A soft coat, a wavy coat, a coat in excess of 1"(2.5 cm) in length at the withers or a coat that hasbeen trimmed.

Disqualification

1. Pricked ears.2. Solid pink tongue.3. Absence of a complete tail.4. Not a solid colour, i.e. Albino; Brindle; Parti-coloured (patches); spotted (including spots, tickedor roaning); Tan-Pointed Pattern (including typicalblack and tan or saddled patterns or shading thathas a defined pattern i.e. distinct butterfly patternon the chest).
