I know it appears to be trite, but I simply cannot believe how quickly the school year is going by. We have just entered the fourth quarter or “home stretch”, a perfect time to look back and reflect. While some of you are looking ahead to the summer and the activities that will no doubt consume your time with families and friends, I am looking back to last summer and the whirlwind of being welcomed to the Pine Valley Family. We have undergone several audits (special education, financial, food service, transportation and technology) and have learned much. We have new leadership and a focus on our future through time-bound, relevant, attainable and measurable planning. We are focused on engagement and feedback throughout our school community and have appreciated your participation in the play, the musical and so many great athletic events. And we have some exciting activities coming up like the Senior Carnival, the Elementary Art Show and some terrific spring concerts you will not want to miss. We have talked incessantly about our program; in fact we are adding to our program for next year with the hope of offering Physics on campus, fulfilling our Physical Education mandates and ensuring that our programs are in compliance in special and general education. Our budget is stable; however, we are going to be focusing intensely on our future through long-term financial planning that includes our stakeholders. One of the instructional components that has garnered much discussion is some frustration with iPads for secondary students. We are considering a shift and perhaps piloting a new device next year. We certainly have taken on a lot and have some positive things to show for it. I think most of all, we better understand each other and are committed to working toward making progress in Pine Valley. We are looking for a strong finish!

It is a pleasure to congratulate the following students for their achievements in academics, the arts and athletics!· Congratulations to the Frewsburg/Pine Valley/Southwestern Boys Swim Team on winning the Section 6 Class C

3rd Annual March Madness “Friends Helping Friends” A Success!

by Mrs. Terry Mansfield

The third annual “March Madness” benefit sponsored by Community In Action, was held at the Pine Valley High School on March 13th. The benefit entitled “Friends Helping Friends” raised $5,200 in a matter of five short hours and proved to be another successful benefit. The money raised from the benefit will be devoted to building a March Madness Fund which will benefit PV students all year long, not only in March. The fund is committed to helping Pine Valley students through difficult times. This includes students suffering from a serious or life-threatening illness, injured in a severe accident, suffering the loss of a parent or the loss of a home due to fire or natural disaster.

The day was filled with fun activities for everyone and included alumni basketball games, a large Chinese auction, face painting and games for the kids, a family-friendly magic show and an exciting final basketball game between the PV staff and the NYS Troopers. The Troopers won the game, but the PV staff put up a fight.

The March Madness Committee would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the Pine Valley staff, administration, students and community members who volunteered their time and/or donated items to the benefit. A special thank you goes out to over 40 alumni players, the PV staff, the NYS Troopers and the referees who participated in the annual basketball games. Thank you to the PV classroom teachers, students and parents who provided a large majority of our Chinese auction baskets. We had about 100 baskets and gift certificates donated to the benefit. Without your support none of this would be possible.

We would also like to acknowledge all of the local businesses in the Pine Valley area -- including South Dayton, Cherry Creek, Gowanda, Fredonia and Jamestown -- for their very generous donations for the benefit. The following businesses or organizations donated over $50 worth of merchandise or services: South Dayton Supermarket, The Mustardseed, CCB, NOCO, SCFCU, Sears-Fredonia, Blasdell Pizza, Midas, Valley Tire, Stephen Pericak DDS, Gowanda Eye, Gabel Brother’s Furniture, Gowanda Moose, Gowanda Ford, The Jock Shop and Bounce Chautauqua.

Finally, a big thank you goes out to our community members for supporting such a worthy cause every year. We are very pleased with the outcome of this benefit. It’s a good feeling to know that our small community can pull together in such a BIG way to help our students and their families financially during difficult times.

Community in Action is always looking for new members to help with various activities throughout the year. Please consider donating your time and skills to our organization. Contact Terry Mansfield for more information at [email protected] or call 296-5337.

Student Schedules

The majority of students in grades 7-11 have gone through an intensive graduation planning process with either Mrs. Kara Smith or Mrs. Amanda Miller. Our goal is to ensure we are providing the best graduation plan for students (with parent input) which will prepare them for college and/or career. The 2016-17 student schedules are slated to be available by the beginning of August this year. I encourage all parents to contact our Guidance Department if you have any questions regarding your student’s 2016-17 schedule or their overall graduation plan (988-3276, ext. 4334).

There have been some questions regarding pathways to graduation. This is one of the reasons why Pine Valley is revamping the scheduling process. The links below provide further information on the current Pathways available to our students:

http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/multiple-pathways/docs/multiple-pathways-pathways-qa-2015-04-08.pdfhttp://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/multiple-pathways/home.html

Student PerformanceParents, please review your son’s/daughter’s grades as the 2015-16 academic school year is coming to an end quickly, and

nothing is more powerful than positive parent involvement along with consistent follow up. Knowing that students often need 325 points to pass a class/subject (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th + FINAL = 325), it is relatively easy to see where your son/daughter currently stands as we head toward the end of the school year. Please don’t forget about the Power School App that allows you to monitor your child’s academics quickly; if you have a SMART phone, it is the most efficient way to be an informed parent. Parents who are currently using the Power School App love it. Our guidance secretary, Mrs. Stacy Chase, has constructed detailed directions on how to download this app on your phone. Again, feel free to call 988-3276, ext. 4334 to obtain more details.

For parents of students taking a Regents Exam this June, it is very important to know what tests your children are taking and when. I’ve provided a link to the current 2016 June Regents Schedule; http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/schedules/2016/regents-616rev.pdf

For seniors expecting to graduate, please ensure their community service hours meet Pine Valley’s 70-hour requirement. All documented Community Service must be given to Mrs. Chase by May 15th.

Attendance obviously plays a major role in student performance, and the fourth quarter can be the determining factor in a student’s success. It may determine whether a student can obtain credit for a course and, perhaps, even graduate. Note: If a student misses more than 14 days for a half year course and/or more than 28 days for a full year course they may not receive credit due to policy.

Valedictorian and SalutatorianCongratulations to Pine Valley’s 2016 Valedictorian Christian Fadale and Salutatorian Owen Richter! These honors obviously

indicate their class rank of number one and number two, but I feel the need to express why these accomplishments happened. It comes down to making moral, ethical, sound personal and educational decisions along with a constant focus on the goal of doing their absolute best. Their obvious achievements of mastery on multiple assessments wasn’t a fluke, nor were their talents on stage or the field. Receiving honors in the classroom, on the stage or on the field clearly indicates that both Christian and Owen fully understand what consistency and dedication can do for an individual. Congratulations to both!

On March 18, 2016 at 8:30 a.m., 10 new members were inducted into the Pine Valley Junior Honor Society at the induction ceremony where faculty, family and friends of the PVJHS candidates were present. After opening remarks, current PVJHS members read the qualities of membership. Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of The Giver! The cast and crew of The Giver brought another huge success to the Pine Valley High School stage April 1 and 2, 2016.

The Giver is Eric Coble’s stage adaption of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning book. The world of The Giver is a utopia. There is no pain, but no joy either. The people are assigned their roles in society according to their talents, and men and women are assigned to each according to how well they balance. Each family is allowed one boy and one girl. When children turn 12 years old, they are assigned their roles in society. When Jonas (Owen Richter) turns 12, he is assigned the special role of Receiver of Memories. He goes to work with the Giver, (Samuel Linsenfelser), who keeps the memories of the world as it used to exist - memories of violence and fear, but also of joy and love. Together Jonas and the Giver come up with a plan that will change their world forever. Special thanks are to be given to Director - Mrs. Sara Arter, Mrs. Kelly Pickreign, Mr. Roger Chagnon and Mrs. Lisa Caskey for their help and endless hours of dedication which brought this production alive. Jonas (portrayed by Owen Richter)

VALENTINE’S DAY CARDS HELP BRIGHTEN SOLDIERS’ DAYby Mrs. Ginnie Maltbie

Students in Mrs. Ginny Maltbie’s class, along with support and guidance from Ms. Rhoda Ellis, sent a little “love” this Valentine’s Day to our deployed U.S. Troops. Students made Valentine’s Day cards with handwritten notes which were then mailed to a platoon on active duty overseas. This activity was the perfect conclusion to their unit on “American Peacekeepers,” showing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s world. Below is the email response received from the soldiers: Mrs. Maltbie, Wanted to thank you very much for the Care Packages. We have recently moved locations and when these packages showed up it was an absolute morale boost. Thank you and everyone else that had part in sending the packages. You all are our true heroes when it comes to care.

Kilian Abers Selected for The Big 30 All-Star Football Game

The Big 30 is a high school football all-star game that is held in the twin tier region of Western New York and northern Pennsylvania. The game is held annually, in August, at Parkway Field on the campus of Bradford Area High School in Bradford. The 43rd game will be held August 6, 2016. Participation is by invitation only. Playing in front of roughly 4,000 spectators, selected individuals will be competing with, and against, the best players in more than 30 cities between two states.

Pine Valley senior Kilian Abers has been invited to be part of this prestigious group. Also invited to participate is Devon Clark from the Gowanda-Pine Valley Panthers. Abers is thankful to the administration and Pine Valley Board of Education for supporting the merger between Gowanda and Pine Valley so that he could continue his high school football career. He is especially thankful to Coach Gabel and the Gowanda Central School District for letting him be part of their family.

Along with selection to the Big 30 all-star football team, Abers also received the Section VI Character Player of the Game Award, the Heart Award and Class C South 2nd Team Defense All-Star recognition.

SENIOR UPDATE

It was very exciting to see so many seniors engaged in the college application process this year. We have 36 out of 46 students planning to continue their education at college or a trade school. We have two students who are enlisting in the military with the rest choosing to enter into the workforce. Many of the students entering the workforce have expressed the desire to go to college after they gain some life experience. Many of the students have a very clear idea of what they will be studying at college. We wish them success and look forward to hearing about what college and life after high school have to offer!

SCHOLARSHIPS

Seniors are encouraged to apply for the various scholarships that are available. We receive notice continually about the various scholarships available in our community. Some scholarships are available to students attending college for specific careers, but there are also many scholarships that are not career specific and are open to anyone. Students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as they are eligible for. Students receive notice in their homerooms whenever a new scholarship is open to applications. Many scholarships require a brief essay and/or letter(s) of recommendation. It is important for students to be aware of deadlines and make sure they are requesting letter(s) of recommendation well ahead of time. More information and applications are available in the Guidance Office. Pine Valley’s website is always updated with scholarship information and links to applications as well. Be sure to check it out under the Counselor/Psychologist tab, then click either Scholarship Opportunities for a list of scholarships by due date, or click Scholarship Applications for application documents.

SAT/ACT

Juniors should be registering to take the SAT in preparation for college. Students are encouraged to take the SAT since most colleges require it for the admission application. There is one remaining test scheduled for this school year. The test is June 4th, and students must register by May 5th (late registration is May 25th). You can register online at www.sat.collegeboard.com. The high school code is 335260. Fee waivers are available to students who qualify. The ACT is scheduled for June 11th, and the registration deadline is May 6th (late registration until May 20). ACT registration can be done online at www.actstudent.org.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSITION PROGRAM

The Middle School transition program will take place May 23rd through the 26th. As part of the program, seventh grade students will be chosen to be a “Panther” to a sixth grade “Cub”. The role of the “Panther” is to acquaint their “Cub” with the middle school schedule, teachers and to show them

what being a middle school student is all about. Seventh grade students will be invited to apply to be a “Panther”. “Panthers” will be chosen based on their academic achievement, positive attitude, teacher recommendation and for being an overall good role model. Students will receive permission slips to participate in the program. All “Panthers” will be required to take part in one after-school training that will review the roles and expectations. “Panthers” will be assigned two or three cubs but will only have one “Cub” each day. This has been a very successful program for the past few years, and we hope students will find this very helpful in their transition for the next school year.

College Exploration

In February, our juniors and seniors were treated to a field trip to SUNY Fredonia’s Open House. Thirteen students spent their Presidents’ Day exploring Fredonia’s campus, visiting with academic departments, finding extracurricular activities that interest them and learning about financial aid.

On March 16th, we took our juniors to the National College Fair in Buffalo. Admissions representatives from hundreds of colleges were present to speak to our students about the educational opportunities available across the nation. This was a huge event, and our students received valuable information to help them narrow down their college choices. Juniors and sophomores were also given an opportunity to visit Jamestown Community College on

April 12th. The trip was meant to introduce our college-bound students to JCC by exploring their campus, obtaining information about their academic programs and learning about student life on campus. To help round out their experience, students were also treated to lunch on campus.

Is Your Child Planning to Find a Part -Time Job?All minors in NYS ages 14-17 are required to apply and obtain Employment Certificates (also known as working papers) in order to be legally qualified for employment. High school graduates under the age of 18 are still required to obtain working papers. Minors 12-13 years old can only be employed in the hand harvest of berries, fruits and vegetables or on a parent or guardian’s farm. More detailed information can be found online or by calling the school. To apply for working papers, students must request the Application from Mrs. Stacy Chase in the HS Guidance Office. Directions and other information can also be found on our school website under the Jr./Sr. High School > Counselor/Psychologist page. Once this application is complete, students should return all documentation, in person, to Mrs. Chase. The certificate will be completed for the student at that time.

Requirements for Applicants:An employment certificate or permit should be issued to any qualified applicant who is between 12 and 18 years of age. Certificates are valid for a period of two years (ages 12/13, 14/15, 16/17). Each age level has its own employment criteria and restrictions. Employment certificates and permits are no longer required once the student turns 18. Minors can apply for the working papers through the PV High School Guidance Office. The applicant does not need to have a job to apply for the working papers, nor does the school need to know by whom the applicant is to be employed. Directions to Complete the Application: The following information is required in order to obtain the Employment Certificate.

· Evidence of Age - this must be a birth certificate or driver’s license. (The school is not required to keep copies of birth certificates, so please provide a copy with your application.)

· Parental/Guardian Signature - the parent or guardian must sign the application. When the applicant is applying for a full-time employment certificate, the parent must personally appear at the school to sign the application, unless the applicant is a high school graduate.

· Certificate of Physical Fitness - The applicant must present a certificate of physical fitness from a school or private physician. The annual school examination, sports examination, or other complete examination could be acceptable for employment purposes if deemed so by the School Nurse. In all cases, the physical exam must have been given within 12 months prior to the application date. Students can see our School Nurse to inquire if we already have proper documentation regarding their physical examination. If we do, the nurse may be able to sign this document instead of the applicant seeing their physician personally.

· The applicant (your child) must be present when returning the application because the Employment Certificate must be signed in the presence of the issuing official (PV’s Guidance Secretary).

The school has the right to revoke certificates and permits for appropriate cause. For example, if employment interferes with school attendance or affects the minor’s academic progress, if it is discovered that the issuance of the working papers was based on false information, or if employment is affecting the health and welfare of a minor in other ways.

The Laws Governing the Employment of Minors can be obtained upon request at the PV Guidance Office. You can also find more information about the employment of minors at this website http://www.p12.nysed.gov/sss/pps/workingpapers/. If you would like to print the documents at home, please go to http://www.pval.org/Page/1655. Otherwise, all documents can be obtained in the PV Guidance Office during regular school hours. Please call our HS Guidance Office at ext. 4334 if you have any questions.

Teachers are available on Mondays through Thursdays after school until 3:45 pm to provide students with academic assistance. 3:45 pm academic bus runs are available to transport

students home. Please contact your child’s teacher or building principal if you wish to have your child stay.

Academic Assistance is Available

ATTENTION PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12 Did you know that acceptance in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program not only helps the school, but it can also help you in other ways. Many colleges grant waivers for college application fees based on a student’s participation in the free/reduced lunch program. Almost all colleges require students to take either the SAT or ACT test. These tests, along with the PSAT, have a fee connected to them. Waivers for these tests can also be granted to students in the free/reduced lunch program. Applications for the free/reduced lunch program can be obtained from the Business Office, the Elementary Office or the High School Office. You may apply at anytime during the school year.

Did you know that students can take their

learner permit test online at Pine Valley?

Students need to see Mr. Mark Chase to pick up a packet and a test booklet. The packet contains every-thing that needs to be filled out for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Once they are ready for the test, they need to contact Mr. Chase to schedule a day. Students will receive a computer printout after taking the test. If they passed, this printout needs to go with the packet to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Permit fees are paid directly to the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Chase at 988-3276, ext. 4472.

WINTER ALL COUNTY FESTIVALby Mr. Roger Chagnon

Late this winter found the instrumental music department in high gear with the Chautauqua County Music Teachers’ Association (CCMTA) Winter All County Festival. This festival differs from the larger Spring Festival held annually at Chautauqua Institution in that it hosts mostly smaller ensembles such as Jazz Band, Women’s Chorus, Jazz Chorus, Brass Ensemble, and Elementary Band and was held at Chautauqua Lake Central School. Two Pine Valley high school students were selected to participate in the 2016 Brass Ensemble. Both Christian Fadale (senior) and Daniel Milliman (freshman) are French horn players who added their sound to the group and had an incredible day of rehearsal, music-making, fellowship and an outstanding performance. Pictured with Mr. Chagnon – Christian on left and Daniel on right.

Pine Valley is also proud that four of our 6th grade band members were selected to be a part of the Elementary Band. These students were (left to right in picture): Jay Fadale (alto saxophone), Melody Sunick (clarinet), Maggie King (clarinet) and Mattison Cadle (flute). This day marked a watershed in their musical adventures because it is an entire day of long rehearsals before an evening concert sitting among peers from other county schools. These students took the extended playing time in stride and worked diligently during rehearsals in order to have a fabulous performance. We are very proud of all our young music-makers in the Valley and especially of these six individuals and their achievements. One Band, One Sound!

A Message from Mrs. Zimmerman...

Spring has sprung, and our students at Pine Valley Elementary continue to grow academically and socially every day. As the weather improves, please encourage your children to get outside and play. Play is an important way for growing minds to explore their world and growing bodies to exercise. Please also continue to read with your children, ask them to read to you or other family members and discuss what you’ve read together. With spring at our doorstep we are looking forward to Creativity Night, Universal Pre-Kindergarten Round-Up, Kindergarten Screening and planning for Summer Enrichment opportunities. We were recently recognized as a “Mix-It-Up Model School” as we consistently demonstrate respect for one another through our character education initiatives. Please see below for important information regarding UPK and Kindergarten registrations. As always, feel free to stop in or give us a call with any questions you might have. Happy Spring!

First Grade Buddies - A Person’s a Person, No Matter How Small

by Mrs. Sandy Valvo

Students in Mrs. Valvo’s fifth grade and Mrs. Raetz’s first grade have ‘buddied’ up in a unique mentoring opportunity. Since October, the fifth grade students have been invited to spend thirty minutes each Friday peer tutoring a first grade buddy. During this time, the students work together to reinforce skills that have been taught throughout the week, such as rereading stories, practicing new spelling rules, or doing math drills. In the beginning of this mentor program, Mrs. Raetz facilitated a mentoring environment that established a routine centered on guided practice and meaningful communication between mentor and student. As a result of this experience, the fifth grade students have developed leadership skills by taking responsibility for someone else’s learning. They have also learned the importance of being positive role models for younger learners in their school community. When asked about her experience as a fifth grade mentor, Kristal Ramirez replied, “I like to do this because I get to help my first grade buddy learn by teaching her in a fun way. I get to encourage her to learn new things.”

As part of a school-wide celebration of Dr. Seuss, the fifth grade students decided to prepare a special activity for

their first grade buddies. Under the complete instruction of their respective fifth grade mentors, Mrs. Raetz’s first

graders made their own Horton puppet, to correlate with their classroom read aloud of Horton Hears a Who.

Wonderful Wolves!By Mrs. Lisa Gallivan

Recently my intermediate ELA class studied about the gray wolf of North America as part of a New York State common core module. The class learned about the habitats of gray wolves, their ways of survival, their way of communication and their overall survival instincts. As a cumulating activity, each student used imovie, a video software application (“app”) and created a captivating movie trailer which included pictures of gray wolves paired with factual information about the gray wolf. These exciting movie trailers can be viewed on the Pine Valley website. Go to www.pval.org. Click on Elementary tab and then Support Services. Under Mrs. Gallivan’s name, click on “Wolves-Student-Made Movie Trailers. Please take a moment to watch these student created videos and discover the world of the North American gray wolf.

Pine Valley Poets!By Mrs. Lisa Gallivan

Mrs. Gallivan’s intermediate ELA class recently completed a poetry unit with elements adopted from a NYS common core ELA module. The students studied and composed different types of poetry such as alliteration, acrostic, cinquain, diamante, haiku, shape and sensory poetry, and free verse. Upon the completion of the poetry unit, the students were each awarded a certificate of achievement in poetry in which each student was declared a Master Poet!

Elementary Counselor’s CornerMrs. Amanda Miller, M.S., C.A.S. School Counselor

Pine Valley Elementary is a Bucket Filling School!

As part of our Creating a Safer School (CASS) Program, Pine Valley Elementary has continued the school-wide positive behavior initiative called “Bucket Filling.” This initiative is based on the book “How Full is Your Bucket?” Bucket filling is a philosophy that teaches the importance of kindness and how making others feel good in turn creates a sense of happiness within us. Another component, which has been key within our school environment is the importance of recognition and appreciation. When children are shown recognition and appreciation for even the smallest job well done, it increases the likelihood that they will repeat that behavior in the future. Every child can “be caught being good.” Therefore, every child can receive a bucket filler ticket as recognition for their effort and appreciation from staff. Even adults report that positive recognition in their workplace increases their motivation and productivity. When we feel appreciated it changes our overall attitude. The Bucket Program has become a great motivator and

behavior modification program. Many of our teachers have embraced the “Bucket Filling” philosophy and are handing out tickets constantly. These teachers report and increase in positive behavior in their classrooms. Students are going out of their way to be helpful and caring. Since October the “Bucket Filling” program has taken off and the terms bucket filler and bucket dipper have become common language throughout the school. Hundreds of bucket filler tickets have been handed out to our students. In March, our bus drivers were also brought in on the bucket filling phenomena. When students are observed being kind, respectful, and compliant with the bus rule they are given a bucket ticket from their driver to put down in our school bucket. Every Friday CASS mentors assist in randomly pulling a student name out of the bucket. That student is the “Bucket Filler of the Week.” As “Bucket Filler of the Week,” that student gets their picture hung in the hallway, receives a certificate and a coupon for a free ice cream during lunch. Every Friday, students wait patiently to hear if it’s their name being called. They have learned that the more tickets you have down in the bucket the more chances you have of your name being drawn.

PINE VALLEY ELEMENTARY IS A MIX-IT-UP MODEL SCHOOL!!!

The CASS Program sponsors Mix-It-Up at Lunch every year at the elementary school. This year, we applied to become a Mix-It-Up Model School, and we won! Mix-It-Up Model Schools embrace respect and inclusiveness as core values—they “mix it up” all year long. These schools have done an

exemplary job of organizing, publicizing and implementing Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day. By sharing their recipes for success, Model Schools are beacons for other schools striving for inclusiveness. Pine Valley is now considered a Model School that other schools can look to for ideas when planning their own Mix events. We are so proud to be given this title and to have received this national recognition.

As a Model School, Pine Valley has met this criteria:1. Hosted a Mix It Up at Lunch Day in 2015 2. Followed up with at least two additional programs

or events on campus that sustained the spirit of Mix It Up at Lunch Day. We do this through Bucket Filling, CASS, character education and guidance classes.

3. Included different members of the school community (e.g., cafeteria staff, aides, administration, teachers and students) to organize Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day.

4. Publicized Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day with a variety of posters, announcements and other media.

5. Students and staff saw Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day as a success.

WINTER SPORTS SUMMARY2015-2016 Pine Valley Lady Panther Basketball

by Coach Bryelle Cortright

This season was like riding a rollercoaster. With all the ups and downs, sometimes it was hard to tell the direction we were going. We experienced some difficult losses. Losses that I feel, had we played the way we were capable of and the way I believed they could play, could have shifted in our favor. There were points in the season that I wasn’t sure if they believed in themselves enough to go where we set out to go. Then we had moments of brilliance that showed what we were capable of. A big win over Chautauqua Lake and an even bigger win over Randolph revealed that if we put our minds to it and put our hearts in it, this team could be a great team. With a few disappointing losses to Ellicottville (twice) and Franklinville late in the season, we sat down and had to take a good long hard look at ourselves and had to make a decision on what we wanted and how we were going to get there. It wasn’t easy. After another big win, this time over Clymer, we were set for playoffs!

As the 5th seed, we would have to battle every single game. There would be no easy games from here on out. For our first game, we had to travel to 4th seeded Sherman. The Sherman Wildcats are typically a very well-coached and scrappy team, so I knew we’d have our work cut out for us. With a fire and drive that I only saw a few times during the season we jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first. Although Sherman was able to make some runs and even take the lead back, we fought through the adversity (crazy calls, lucky shots and a rowdy crowd) to be victorious at the final buzzer, 54-47. With this win, we would advance to the sectional semi-finals and have to play the 1st seed, Panama.

Panama, last year’s Class D Section 6 Champions and a State Tournament Final 4 participant was very good. They had everything-big posts, quick-savvy shooting guards, and a poised, disciplined point guard. They were going to be tough to beat. I knew, however, that they hadn’t seen a defensive intensity quite like ours and that would cause some problems for them. And it did. The first three quarters of the game were something that I am very proud of. “My girls” fought and fought hard, battling to lead after the 1st 14-11 with a buzzer beater by Jamie. With somewhat of a shooting slump in the 2nd, we went into halftime down 5, 23-18. In the third, we were able to keep things close and finished the quarter 30-34. After a quick basket by Zoe, we had cut their lead down to 2. Unfortunately, their shooting guard got “hot” and Panama was able to outscore us 26-8 in the 4th, leading to a lopsided 60-38 loss.

It would be easy to look at our 11-11 record and think that this team did not have a lot to offer. You could not be further from the truth. Yes, there were trying times and yes, things were difficult. It is my hope that through this season, these young ladies learned to face adversity head on and never quit. Nothing in life worth having comes easy. You have to work and work hard to make your dreams a reality. It may have taken us 11 losses to realize it but if we take that lesson away with us, this group is successful.

JV Girls Basketball 2015-2016By Coach Jennifer Johnson

During my high school years as a Lady Panther basketball player and past state champion under the coaching realm of Tim Nobles and Jerry Skurcenski, my love for the game of basketball and for the color purple grew and has remained strong to this day. I can’t explain this love any better than Michael Jordan did, “The game of basketball has been everything to me. My place of refuge, place I’ve always gone when I needed comfort and peace. It’s been the site of intense pain and the most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction. It’s a relationship that has evolved over time, given me the greatest respect and love for the game.”

A book was given to me after the PV 1995 State Championship entitled, In These Girls, Hope is Muscle, written by Madeleine Blais. Blais shares the story of a high school girls’ basketball team’s journey to the top. This work is filled with the players’ insights on basketball and their individual struggles and after rereading reminded me of the true meaning of success and effort and why I wanted to coach. Blais’ work affirmed my love for basketball and served as a reminder that hard work

eventually pays off. My main goal this season was to teach fundamentals and skills, and I hoped to instill a little love and passion for the game. The players were not the only ones to learn something new. In return, these girls taught me about determination and drive as they showed perseverance when faced with adversity with only seven players and little experience. They played with heart and continued to hold their heads high with every loss. We didn’t lose every game, however. We ended with a 2-16 record. Our two victories and highlights of the season were against Ellicottville and Forestville. This team truly showed that hope is a muscle, and if they work hard in the off-season, they will prove that determination and hope triumph. These Lady Panthers should be proud of this season and proud of the improvements they made.

The 2015-16 Lady Panthers consisted of Sophomores: Kayla Hohl and Kaylee Crisanti; Juniors: Emily Raiport, Zoe Nelson, Courtney Luce, Kelley Andrews, Erin and Alexis Scofield and Seniors: Jamie Wilcox, Jessica Wilcox, Karah Herman, Lindsey Crisanti, and Brandee Pulliam-Dahl.

Words cannot express and will never be enough to thank all the people who assist in making these seasons work. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed and not thanked. Without the following people, I could never do what I do:

ØThank you to our managers who assisted with both the varsity and junior varsity teams: Jocelyn Tyma, Madisyn Herman, Payton Swanson, Kristina Hoth, Delanie Tunstall, Paige Hohl, Preston Danner, Haley Pillard and Autumn Gregory.

ØThank you Jennifer Johnson for stepping up into the role of JV coach! You have done an AMAZING job, and we are lucky to have you here! I could not have survived without you!

ØThank you Mark Chase for everything that you did for the program and me this season. You will never know how much I appreciate your help and friendship.

ØThank you Mr. Nobles. There are no words that could ever express the gratitude and appreciation that I have for you. I am so believably fortunate to have a great mentor and friend in you.

ØThank you to everyone who helped in the day-to-day operations that kept our season running smoothly; Mr. Lyle Milliman, Mr. Mihalko, Mrs. Youngberg, Mrs. Chase, Mr. Braun, Mr. Hooker, Dee Herman & Dawn Andrews (our ladies at the table), Patsy Moskal and our substitute bus drivers! Without you all, much of what I do, would not be possible!

ØThank you VERY much to the parents who make it possible for us to even have teams. Without your support and efforts, none of this would even be possible.

ØFinally, thank you to “my kids.” Thank you for believing in me and what I saw in each and every one of you. I know with hard work and dedication to greatness, you will be able to achieve whatever you set out to. I am very proud of all of you.

The 2015-16 JV Lady Panthers were composed of seven girls: freshmen: Katlyn Lawton and Katelyn Miller and sophomores: Cindy Booth, Kahlen Green, Shannan Lamer, Cassy Pillard and Karson Smuda. Thank you girls for making this season memorable! As my first Pine Valley team, you will always hold a very special place in my heart! I would like to take a moment to thank some very important people who helped to make this season possible. Thank you to one of my very best friends, Varsity coach, Bryelle Cortright, for loving the game like I do. Thank you, Tim Nobles, for being my mentor and for helping me out on the court and on the sidelines. It was an honor to coach with both of you. I would like to also thank Michael Martin, our wonderful scorebook keeper, and thank you managers (Jocelyn Tyma, Madisyn Herman, Payton Swanson, Kristina Hoth, Delanie Tunstall, Paige Hohl, Preston Danner, Haley Pillard and Autumn Gregory) for being there when I needed you. Thank you Lyle Milliman and Ken Estus for all of your hard work! Thank you, Mark Chase, for all of your help. Thank you to my hubby and boys for keeping stats and supporting me when I was never home and for allowing me to fulfill my need to show others what Pine Valley basketball is all about. And finally, thank you parents! Without you, none of this would be possible.

Pine Valley Varsity Boys Basketball 2015-16by Coach David Pihlblad

The 2015-2016 varsity boys basketball team ended the season with a record of 8-13 for the second consecutive year. The team was led by a large senior class of seven student athletes. Captains Elijah Hall and Kilian Abers returned as key players on the team, along with Richard Tabak, Brad Anderson, Thomas Mitchell and Anthony Jenkins. Jarred Heitzenrater also began the season on the roster, but his playing career was cut short due to an accident at the beginning of the season. Jarred still played a large role for the team as a motivator on the sidelines and in the locker room. The team also consisted of four juniors: Dylan Chase, Gilberto Ortiz, Austin Butcher and Tyler West and two sophomores: Trent Mihalko and Zach Mansfield who was called up halfway through the season and played the final 11 games on varsity. Our season started with a very difficult but competitive non-league schedule. Our first three games were against Chautauqua Lake (C1 Sectional Finalist), Brocton and Silver Creek (C2 Sectional Finalist), who ended their seasons with a combined record of 45-22. All three teams also had undefeated records when we faced them. Although we lost our first three games, these tough opponents made our team better and more prepared for our league season which we finished in third place and a 6-4 overall record. Arguably the biggest highlight of the season came in our home win against Franklinville midway through the schedule. Franklinville came into the game with a 9-1 record overall, ranked #9 in New York State Class D, averaging nearly 70 points per game and had scored 86 points in their previous game. After a tight first quarter, they seemed to be on their way to another victory after building up a 17 point lead late in the third quarter 37-20. With some hot outside shooting from Elijah Hall and Dylan Chase and suffocating defense in the final ten minutes, we were able to pull out an amazing come-from-behind victory. Dylan Chase and Elijah Hall led the team in scoring with 17 and 14 points and each had 9 points in the final quarter. After we were able to tie the game in the final minute, Franklinville made two free throws with less than 30 seconds left to take a two point lead. After taking a time out with 11 seconds left, Dylan was able to penetrate and draw two defenders. He found a wide open Elijah Hall at the top of the three point line, who shot faked a defender and hit the game winning three point shot. Franklinville missed a desperation half court shot at the buzzer and a wild celebration ensued for the Pine Valley fans and players. Another highlight of the season included winning both games against rival Forestville, with the second game coming on our senior night. Our starting five were all seniors (Kilian, Elijah, Brad, Richard and Thomas), and Anthony was our first sub off the bench. These seniors played their hearts out in a very entertaining game that came down to the wire with Pine Valley winning 51-46. Dylan Chase led the team in scoring for the season, averaging over 15 points per game. Kilian Abers was right behind Dylan with 13 points per game. Both Dylan and Kilian were chosen as CCAA Division II East All Stars on the First Team. They were the only boys basketball players selected on the all-star teams from Pine Valley this year. Dylan also led the team in assists and steals on the season. Abers led the team in blocks, while Gilberto Ortiz was the leader in rebounds for the season. Our team was

(continued from page 21) steals on the season. Abers led the team in blocks, while Gilberto Ortiz was the leader in rebounds for the season. Our team was very balanced with every single player registering a least two points on the season. Each game it seemed like a different player stepped up and played their best game; we just struggled putting together four complete quarters each game where all of our players were playing their best basketball at the same time. In our final game of the season, I can truly say that we did play our best basketball game of the season. Our playoff loss came on the road in a very loud gymnasium at Franklinville. In a very well-played battle from both teams, the season came down to the last few possessions similar to the first time we played Franklinville. After gaining the lead on a buzzer beating three pointer to end the third quarter from Dylan Chase, we clung on to the lead for as long as possible. After Kilian Abers and Gilberto Ortiz both had to go to the bench after picking up their 4th fouls, Franklinville was able to briefly take the lead back. Elijah Hall made a three pointer with a minute left to tie the game just to see a Franklinville player take the lead for good with a three point shot. Two Pine Valley shots to tie the game in the final seconds came up short, and unfortunately our season was over. Our boys played extremely hard and should have been proud with the way they played. It was tough to see our boys lose after playing such a great game. Although we will graduate seven players from the 2015-2016 basketball team, there is a lot to be excited about for next season. We bring back five different players who have started at the varsity level and bring up several junior varsity players who will be fighting for playing time next year after a very successful season under the leadership of Coach Chris Buczek. I would like to thank my assistant coach Ehrich Zollinger for another great season on the bench with me. A big thank you also goes out to our bus drivers: Kristen Sercu and Bruce Newcomb, our bookkeeper Jen Johnson, statistician Wes Johnson, manager Wayne Libby, the faculty and staff at Pine Valley, the School Board and Administration, our great fans and parents for coming to all of the games and supporting our boys every game win or lose.

2015-16 Junior Varsity Boys Basketballby Coach Chris Buczek

This year’s version of the JV boys’ basketball team brought back five players (Brody Sercu, Stephen Crisanti, Zach Mansfield, Nick Gage and Robbie Clutter) who graced the floor as a JV player last year and eight players (Jesse Jenkins, Jordan Bailey, Ben Distasio, Ryan Snyder, Makiah Snyder, Brennan Sercu, Bayley Finch and Branden Libby) who were either new to the program or fresh up from the modified level. The level of experience from the returning five helped each player ease into the season while keeping expectations high and everyone’s attitude positive in the pursuit of success. The opening of the season saw the Panthers travel to Chautauqua Lake to face a very good Thunderbird team. Their press and aggressive style of play showed the Panthers Junior Varsity team where they needed to improve. From that game, the team rattled off eight victories in a row, each day working to become better. Soon following that eight game streak, the Varsity team called upon Zach Mansfield to fill a void on their team brought upon by injuries. Throughout the next 10 games, the Junior Varsity team saw many different players step up and fill the void Zach left. Unselfish play lead to team unity and working together on defense taught the team great lessons on how five players who play as one unit will overcome any obstacle in their way. As the year ended, their record stood at 11-9 leaving their footprints on the Panther tradition of hard working, successful teams. With continued dedication to their game, the sky is the limit to how successful this group of talented basketball players can be. The team would like to thank the parents and community for your continued support of the program. Without you, these boys would not have this great opportunity.

7th & 8th GRADE BOYS MODIFIED BASKETBALLby Coach Matt Fredrick

The 2015-2016 basketball season gave me the opportunity to coach both the 7th & 8th grade teams! When the season began back in early January, I thought to myself how am I going to manage two teams? Well, that question was answered very quickly into the season!! From the very first practice I could tell that chemistry was already developing amongst the two teams and the level of focus and dedication was very noticeable. My players, as well as my two team managers, decided together on a phrase that we would say each day “FAMILY.” This one word meant so much to all individuals associated with the modified basketball program. It didn’t matter if you were the coach/player/manager/family member/or fan, everyone had a job that they needed to fulfill in order for our season to take place. The 8th grade team chose three team captains: Brendan Colvin, Corey Ellis and Dawson Harrington, while the 7th grade team chose two: Cameron Hayes & Christian Ortiz. At the modified level, my main goals and focus are to teach these young athletes basic fundamentals, how to play the game of basketball, teamwork and, most importantly, how to be a student/athlete. Just like in any sport and on any team, our season had its high and low moments. Playing some of the more dominant programs like Dunkirk, Fredonia, and Gowanda opened our eyes to the different ability levels within our county. The Pine Valley modified boys basketball program received numerous positive comments and acknowledgements throughout the season from other teams, referees, and fans! As a coach, it is a very proud moment to hear people saying “good sportsmanship from your team” or “wow your teams worked very hard during the game.” I continually expressed to my two teams to: a) have fun, b) don’t worry what the scoreboard says and c) work together as a whole unit.

Our season consisted of playing the following teams: North Collins, Gowanda, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Silver Creek, and Forestville. The eighth grade team consisted of the following players: Dustin Baldwin #44, Connor Bentham #10, Brendan Colvin #01, Corey Ellis #45, Bradley Flagg #21, Curtis Goodwill #11, Dawson Harrington #02, Wesley Lachut #55, and Cole Mosher #04. In addition, the seventh grade team consisted of the following players: Cameron Hayes #03, David Hunt #43, Charles McCracken #42, Christian Ortiz #52, Kirkland Smuda #53, Hunter Stewart #13, and Ty Wilkins #50. I want to send out a TREMENDOUS THANK YOU to our two team managers: Hunter Colvin (5th grader) as well as Abigail Ellis (6th grader). I also want to thank the school district, athletic department, parents, family members and fans for their continued support throughout the entire season!
