RE: PV KIDS’ CORNER 2015-2016 REGISTRATION Registration materials for PV Kids’ Corner 2015-2016 enrollment are also available online from our website. All PV Kids’ Corner registrations and written schedule change requests must be returned directly to the business office.

Monthly fees are billed for nine (9) calendar months: August (includes first day of school in August through September), October, November, December, January, February, March, April and May (includes May through last day of school in June). Monthly fees are based on the number of school days in the school calendar, averaged into nine (9) equal amounts, including minimum days and early dismissal days.

Families who have children currently enrolled in the PV Kids’ Corner Program are offered a two-week priority re-enrollment registration period, usually beginning in early May, before any new enrollments are processed for the next school year.

Registrations for families new to PV Kids’ Corner will also be accepted during this time, but will not be processed until the priority re-enrollment period has ended. At the conclusion of the priority re-enrollment registration period, all registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis according to the date the completed forms are received.

A child’s enrollment in PV Kids’ Corner is subject to availability, so register early! Once the maximum daily capacities are filled, children will be wait-listed for enrollment. Letters confirming a child’s enrollment for a specific, daily schedule will be mailed to each family.

If your childcare needs change, please notify the business office in writing immediately. Parents must provide the PV Kids’ Corner business office with written notification to cancel or request changes to a child’s monthly schedule two weeks prior to the change or cancellation. All fees must be paid for the two-week notification period. Due to possible waiting lists, not all schedule change requests can be accommodated nor can readmission be guaranteed if a schedule is cancelled.

Re: PV KIDS’ CORNER ENROLLMENT INFORMATION FOR

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

PV Kids’ Corner is designed as a high quality program offering art, social, educational and recreational activities in a safe, caring and nurturing environment. Specially designed campus centers at most PVPUSD elementary schools keep your child in familiar surroundings and eliminate transportation concerns.

PV Kids’ Corner centers offer many different enrollment choices for Transitional Kindergarten students from occasional drop-in childcare to monthly programs. • Before School Program from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. • Kinder Plus Program from school dismissal to 3:15 p.m. • After School Program from school dismissal to 6:30 p.m.

Parents must submit completed registration forms circling the specific days desired for the Before School, Kinder Plus and/or After School Programs. If the registration forms for your child do not indicate a specific schedule to start at the beginning of the school year, your child’s enrollment will be processed for emergency drop-in care only. Be advised that availability cannot be guaranteed for a future schedule request or occasional drop-in care.

During the first week of the school year, all TK students attend school on the EarlyBird class schedule. Therefore, program fees will be charged according to the Before School, Kinder Plus or After School Program requested for your child, if enrolled in the PV Kids’ Corner Program.

After the teachers have assessed their students, they will assign the TK students to the EarlyBird or LaterGator classes. When the TK students are divided into Early/Late classes, Kids’ Corner will accept written schedule changes due to the EarlyBird/LaterGator class determination without the required minimum two-week advance written notification.

Upon written notification from parents, EarlyBird and LaterGator schedules will be adjusted this one time without the required two-week advance notification. For all other schedule changes or cancellations, our business office must receive a minimum two-week advance written notification and all changes or cancellations must remain in effect a minimum of four weeks. Please refer to the PV Kids’ Corner Parent Handbook for the full enrollment change/cancellation policy details.

Thank you for your interest in PV Kids’ Corner!

Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District

PV KIDS’ CORNER BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY We believe the school-age years are important in the life of a child and that quality childcare provides opportunities to meet social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs when parents are not available.

We believe children can expect a stable, safe, stimulating environment before and after school where the qualities of experiences, activities, supervision and guidance by trained staff affect the child’s present and future well-being.

We believe all children have dignity and worth and are unique individuals. Our belief in an environment less structured than that of a classroom setting allows for the development of creativity, problem-solving and encourages each child’s individuality.

We believe the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s PV Kids’ Corner Program is an extension of home and school, where limits are applied consistently by caring adults who provide guidance, companionship and nurturing; thus showing children we care about them. PROGRAM GOALS

1. To create a relaxed, trusting, stable environment that is inviting, comfortable, attractive and orderly, where children feel ownership of the center and find it an exciting place to be.

2. To employ staff who show genuine caring and respect for the children, who have confidence in each child’s potential and promote each child’s self-esteem.

3. To provide a variety of developmentally-appropriate activities for children where they are encouraged to pursue their own interests, develop friendships and grow in confidence, independence and respect for themselves and others.

4. To provide the opportunity for parent involvement in the review of the program quality and suggestions for improvement and participation through parent evaluations.

5. To supplement available community and school resources by providing a range of recreational and enrichment opportunities that are both affordable and convenient.

STAFF

All staff and substitutes are employees of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and are highly qualified to provide excellent PV Kids’ Corner care. A staff/child ratio of not more than one to fifteen is maintained in order to ensure safety and careful attention.

Staff is trained to provide an organized, well-supervised and caring environment that is enjoyable. They participate in an ongoing program of in-service training; workshops by professional organizations, or college classes; and CPR/First Aid training. All staff meets District requirements for education and experience in children’s programs.

A Center Supervisor is responsible for planning and implementing the monthly calendar and daily activities. He or she is on site daily, directs other staff members and works directly with the children. Administrative support is received from the PV Kids’ Corner Program Director.

ACTIVITIES

Children at PV Kids’ Corner are involved in a variety of instructional and recreational activities that are designed to be appropriate for their age and maturity levels. Both indoor and outdoor experiences are provided, with time for active play as well as time to relax, read, do homework and participate in quiet activities. Center Supervisors develop themes and new materials are rotated throughout the year to follow the theme-related activity calendar.

Quiet homework time is set aside each day. Staff will encourage children to do their homework and will be available to answer questions and ensure a quiet and appropriate environment during homework time. Computers with supervised Internet access are also available. The group setting does not allow extended one-on-one assistance for homework; parents should review homework daily.

Working within the Recreation/Community Programs Department with Kids’ Corner is the PVPUSD Elementary Enrichment Program, which offers District children a unique variety of enriching after school classes. All Kids’ Corner policies also apply to the Elementary Enrichment Program. Registration and fees for this program are independent from Kids’ Corner; however, students with outstanding Kids’ Corner balances may not enroll in Enrichment. For information contact the Enrichment Program at (310) 541-7626, or visit www.pvpusd.net/enrichment. PROGRAM UPDATES

Parents are invited to Back-to-School night, PTA meetings and Kindergarten Roundups. At Back-to-School night, each PV Kids’ Corner center will be open for parents to visit. The Center Supervisor will be available to provide information on the program and to answer any questions that parents may have. Important announcements and useful information regarding the PV Kids’ Corner Program can be found on each center’s bulletin board. Be sure to check this daily for program updates. ADMISSION POLICIES 1. Families must have all prior PVPUSD accounts paid in full and in good standing. 2. Children must be enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten through fifth grade in the

Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. 3. Children must be enrolled at the same school as the PV Kids’ Corner center at which they are

registered. 4. Enrollment is open to any child providing:

a) The child will benefit from the program and can actively participate in activities. b) The child will not require supervision beyond that normally given to a group of children with

an adult/child ratio of not more than one to fifteen. c) There is no adverse effect upon the child, staff or other children.

5. At the opening of each registration period, usually in May, currently enrolled children will be given a two-week priority re-enrollment period before any new registrations are processed.

6. At the end of the priority re-enrollment period, registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis according to the date the completed forms are received at the PV Kids’ Corner business office.

7. Waiting lists will begin if a center reaches enrollment capacity with priority given in this order: 1) Siblings of enrolled children. 2) Special needs (PVPUSD referral required). 3) All other families beginning with the earliest dated application.

8. Enrollment shall be granted without discrimination in regard to sex, race, color, creed, religion, disability, or national origin.

ADMISSION PROCEDURES

1. Completed PV Kids’ Corner registration forms must be submitted directly to the PV Kids’ Corner business office each school year, accompanied by a nominal, non-refundable registration fee.

2. The registration fee, which covers enrollment processing and orientation materials, shall be paid upon enrollment of each child for each school year. Parents must re-register each school year.

3. All registration forms must be completed, signed and accompanied by the registration fee and the first month’s fees prior to admission. Children signed up for an individual drop-in day must have all forms completed and registration fees paid in advance of attendance. For your child’s safety, individual drop-in days are not available during the first two weeks of the school year.

4. Children enrolled for less than a 5 days per week schedule option must sign up for specific days, remaining the same for each week. Trading of days and make-up days are not possible since you are reserving time, space and supervision for your child whether in attendance or not.

5. Registrations will only be processed upon receipt of the completed and signed Registration Agreement, the completed and signed Activity Permission and Medical Authorization, payment of the required registration fee and payment of contracted fees in full. Incomplete forms or forms without proper payment will not be accepted and could delay or jeopardize a child’s enrollment.

6. A child must be registered at least 48 hours before participation begins, subject to availability. Future schedule change requests require that parents provide the PV Kids’ Corner business office with a minimum two-week advance, written notification. Refer to page 5 for full policy details.

7. The Parent Handbook must be reviewed by the parent/guardian. If a parent has questions or concerns, the parent should discuss these with staff. Please bring your child to visit your PV Kids’ Corner center before he or she begins. You and your child will have a chance to become comfortable with the environment, and have the opportunity to meet the Center Supervisor and discuss any concerns.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS – FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

To avoid confusion about the enrollment process, the PV Kids’ Corner business office considers the enrolling parent/guardian to have legal authority to enroll the child, make changes on the enrollment forms and request copies of certain forms. If both parents wish to exercise this authority, both parents must sign each enrollment form where parent/guardian signature is requested, and each assumes full financial responsibility for the payment of all contracted and incurred fees. ENROLLMENT PROCESS – SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

A copy of a valid court order will be required to prohibit the release of a child, or any information related to the child, to a non-custodial parent. Please notify the business office of any legal restraints and provide copies for the PV Kids’ Corner center file. EVALUATIONS and QUALITY CONTROL

PV Kids’ Corner is dedicated to offering a high quality, well-defined, flexible childcare experience. To assist us in ensuring program quality, parent evaluation surveys are available from the website. Results will be compiled and used in the continuing development of your center. While surveys offer a “control” in the evaluation process, please feel free to call the PV Kids’ Corner business office if you have additional concerns.

FEES PV Kids’ Corner is a fee-based District program that is intended to be self-supporting. There are many different enrollment options, each with a specific fee rate. Please refer to the Fee Schedule. Registration Fee An annual, non-refundable registration fee for each child is required to enroll in PV Kids’ Corner each school year, whether the child is enrolled on a monthly basis or for individual drop-in days. Monthly Fees Monthly fees are established by dividing the total number of regular school days in the school year into nine equal amounts. Monthly fees are billed for nine calendar months: August (includes first day of school in August through September), October, November, December, January, February, March, April and May (includes May through last day of school in June); and remain the same for each month regardless of enrollment date. There is no additional fee charged for months with more school days and no pro-ration of fees for months with less school days.

Student-free days and school breaks are not included in the count of regular school days since school is not in session, but Day Camp programs are available for additional fees. Enrollment in Day Camp programs requires separate registration and additional fees for all children. Payments Checks or money orders are accepted for all payments or enrollment in the EZ-EFT Payment Program. Cash cannot be accepted. Please write your child’s full name and school on each check or money order made payable to “PVPUSD Kids’ Corner”. Payments may be made at your PV Kids’ Corner center, the PV Kids’ Corner business office or through the EZ-EFT Payment Program.

Be advised that certification for any Flexible Spending/Dependent Care Reimbursement or tax documentation requires a minimum of two business days for processing by the business office.

Payments are due in advance of services no later than the first of each month, whether or not a billing statement has been received. There is no grace period. If the first of the month falls on a weekend or a holiday, payment is due the following business day. Payments received after the first of each month are subject to a $25.00 late payment fee. Billing statements are usually generated on the twentieth of each month and placed in each family folder at the center for pick up by the parent.

If payment is not received within the first five school days of each month, the child may not attend the program until all fees and delinquent charges are paid in full. If payment is two weeks late, services will be terminated and readmission is not guaranteed. Fees will not be adjusted for days missed. Please inform the PV Kids’ Corner business office in advance if you foresee any problem with your payment. In some cases, special payment plans can be established.

A child’s enrollment that has been terminated due to a delinquent payment will not be reinstated to the program a third time in the same school year. If payment is delinquent three times, the child will be permanently removed from the PV Kids’ Corner Program for the remainder of the school year.

Account balances that remain unpaid after 15 days following a request for payment from the PV Kids’ Corner business office will be turned over to PVPUSD Business Services for collection and handled as a District obligation. Families with outstanding balances may not participate in any PV Kids’ Corner Program, including Elementary Enrichment, until the balance is paid in full.

Checks returned for any reason are subject to a $25.00 service charge and all future payments to PV Kids’ Corner will be required in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check without exception.

Page 15: PV KIDS’ CORNER - · PDF fileam pmkp parent/guardian information

5

EZ-EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) PV Kids’ Corner accepts MasterCard, Visa and Discover Card in addition to checking accounts for the free EZ-EFT Payment Program. You just authorize your financial institution to make each payment on your behalf on the payment due date. An advance written notice is required for EZ-EFT Payment Program changes. Items returned for any reason are subject to a $25.00 service charge and could be cause for removal from the EZ-EFT Program. Enrollment forms are available at your PV Kids’ Corner center, the PV Kids’ Corner business office and from the PV Kids’ Corner website. Individual Drop-In Days or Additional Days Individual drop-in days are in addition to a regular monthly schedule or in an emergency situation and are offered as space and staffing permit with 24 to 48 hours advance reservation and Center Supervisor approval. Availability for drop-ins is not guaranteed. Drop-ins reserved on a consistent basis will require that the child be enrolled with a regular monthly schedule and the contracted monthly fees for that schedule be paid in accordance with PV Kids’ Corner policy.

Fees for individual drop-in days are due at the time of reservation for families not enrolled in the EZ-EFT Payment Program. Families enrolled in the EZ-EFT Program may have additional days charged to their pre-authorized bank or credit card account.

A phone message without confirmation from the Center Supervisor or sending your child to the center without a reservation cannot be accepted since prior arrangements with other families may have filled any available space. Speak directly with the Center Supervisor to avoid disappointment. Sibling Discounts A 10% discount off afternoon fees is given to the second and subsequent enrolled children from one family who are maintained on the same account ledger. If enrolled in different options, the discount will be applied to the lower monthly afternoon fee(s). Morning fees are not eligible for the discount.

Cancellation or Changes in Scheduled Enrollment

Prior to the Start of Each School Year: Parents must provide the PV Kids’ Corner business office with written notification to cancel or request changes to a child’s monthly schedule a minimum of two weeks prior to the first day of the school year. Fees must be paid for the two-week period.

Schedule Change Requests: Parents are required to provide the PV Kids’ Corner business office with a two-week, advance, written notification of any schedule change request. Fees must be paid for the two-week period.

Cancellation Notifications: Parents are required to provide the PV Kids’ Corner business office with a two-week, advance, written notification of cancellation prior to their child’s last day. Fees must be paid for the two-week withdrawal notification period. Your child may continue to attend during the two-week period.

Monthly fees are billed for nine calendar months: August (includes first day of school in August through September), October, November, December, January, February, March, April and May (includes May through last day of school in June); and remain the same for each month regardless of enrollment date. There is no pro-ration of fees for months with more or less school days.

All schedule changes and/or cancellations are subject to space availability, and must remain in effect a minimum of four weeks. Confirm receipt of any schedule change/cancellation request directly with the business office. PV Kids’ Corner is not responsible for paperwork that is not received at and confirmed by the business office by any specific deadline.

The P.V.P.U.S.D. Tax ID Number for Income Tax Reporting purposes is 95-6006594.

The PV Kids’ Corner center at your child’s school must be notified no later than 9:00 a.m. the

morning of each day that your child will be absent. Failure to call uses valuable staff time in needless searching and unnecessary phone calls to families and emergency contacts.

2. A child who does not attend school due to illness or behavior reasons will not be allowed at any PV Kids’ Corner Program, including Elementary Enrichment, that day. If your child is sent home from school, dismissed from class or sent to the office because of illness or behavior problems, he/she will not be admitted to PV Kids’ Corner or Elementary Enrichment.

3. There is no reduction in fees for days missed due to illness, vacation or other reasons. When you enroll, you are reserving time, space and staff supervision for your child whether in attendance or not. In case of unforeseen catastrophic crisis in the family, contact the PV Kids’ Corner business office to discuss fees and continued participation.

4. If your child is enrolled in the PVPUSD Elementary Enrichment Program and will be absent from the class, please notify PV Kids’ Corner in advance. PV Kids’ Corner is responsible for locating children enrolled in Enrichment classes. Failure to call uses valuable staff time in needless searching and unnecessary phone calls to families and emergency contacts.

FULL DAY CARE Full day programs are offered during school breaks, pending space availability. Separate registration and payment is required for all children for each full day care program. Registration forms will be available one month in advance, and centers will be combined for these programs. Enrollment is limited and is offered pending adequate enrollment for each full day program.

To register your child for a full day care program, complete the appropriate registration form and return it with payment in full to the PV Kids’ Corner business office no later than the specified deadline. Children must be pre-registered to attend a full day care program. All full day care fees are non-refundable and non-transferable once a child is registered. No refunds, credits or adjustments will be given in case of absence or cancellation. If PV Kids’ Corner cancels any full day program due to low enrollment, all monies paid will be refunded in full.

Enrollment for full day care programs covers the entire time from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. No refunds, credits or adjustments will be given for attending less than the full day. Children must bring a ready-to-eat sack lunch and a beverage on full day care days. If a child does not have a lunch, the parent will be contacted to provide one.

HOLIDAYS and BREAK PERIODS Holidays All PV Kids’ Corner centers are closed and do not offer childcare programs on the following: Labor Day Veterans’ Day Thanksgiving (2 days, Thursday and Friday) Christmas Eve Day Christmas Day New Year’s Eve Day New Year’s Day Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Lincoln’s Birthday Presidents’ Day Memorial Day Independence Day

Break Periods School break programs are available for an additional weekly charge, pending space availability. Separate registration and payment is required for all children for each program. Registration forms will be available one month in advance, and centers will be combined for these programs. Enrollment is limited and is offered pending adequate enrollment for each school break program. If PV Kids’ Corner cancels any school break program due to low enrollment, all monies paid will be refunded in full. No childcare is offered during the final week of summer, before school re-opens for the new fall semester. This allows time for staff training and center set-up. LATE PICK UP POLICY The PV Kids’ Corner Kinder Plus Program for grades TK-2 ends promptly at 3:15 p.m. and all PV Kids’ Corner centers close promptly at 6:30 p.m. each day. When a parent finds it impossible to pick up their child(ren) by their scheduled time of 3:15 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., it is the parent’s responsibility to:

a) contact an authorized adult escort designated on the registration forms, b) make sure the escort understands that the child must be picked up by the 3:15 p.m. or

6:30 p.m. scheduled pick up time and may be asked to show a picture I.D., c) notify the center of action taken.

When a child is picked up after their scheduled pick up time of 3:15 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., the parent or guardian is assessed a penalty fee of $1.00 per child per minute late for the first three late pick ups. Late fees of $5.00 per child per minute late will be charged for the fourth and subsequent late pick ups. Payment is due at the time of service. Continued enrollment in the PV Kids’ Corner program will be jeopardized by repeated late pick ups or non-payment of incurred late pick up fees. After 6:30 p.m., if a parent has made no contact, a responsible party from the child’s emergency list will be contacted to come to the center and pick up the child. If no one is available from the emergency list, PV Kids’ Corner may be obligated to contact Child Protective Services.

SIGNING IN AND OUT POLICY 1. An adult signature and legible time notation are required each day for each child upon arrival

and departure from the center.

Before school procedure -- Parent or adult designee must walk the child into the center and sign the child in. Staff will sign children out upon dismissal to school. Kindergarten and TK children will be walked to their class or Kindergarten play yard.

After school procedure -- Staff will sign children in when they arrive. Children are expected to arrive within ten minutes of dismissal from elementary school. (PV Kids’ Corner staff will escort Kindergarten and TK children from their class to the center.) Parent or adult designee will sign the child out at pick up time. Be prepared to show a picture I.D. at sign out.

Full day procedure -- Parent or adult designee must walk the child into the center and sign the child in upon arrival and out at pick up time. Be prepared to show a picture I.D. at sign out.

2. For reasons of safety, any person picking up children from a PV Kids’ Corner center needs to be

prepared to show a picture I.D. if the staff does not recognize them. 3. Parents must write the name of anyone picking up children on the child’s registration form as an

authorized person. In an emergency situation, if the person picking up the child is not on the registration form, the PV Kids’ Corner center must receive a phone call or a written note from the parent giving permission. For Recreational Release situations, please refer to page 12.

4. Children may not be released to anyone under the age of sixteen (16). A person 16 or 17 years

old may sign a child in or out if prior arrangements have been made with the Center Supervisor. 5. Parents must come into the center to pick up children. For reasons of safety, we cannot send

children out to a vehicle unless the parent is physically unable to pick up the child. Also, be sure that the staff is aware that you are picking up children. This will also give you and the staff an opportunity to discuss how your child’s day has gone. A friendly, “Hello, I’m picking up . How did his/her day go?” is appreciated.

6. If your child is going to be absent, please notify the center no later than 9:00 a.m. the day of the

absence. SUSPECTED ABUSE -- EMPLOYEE MANDATED REPORTING (Penal Code Sections 11166 and 11168) Any childcare employee who has knowledge of or observes a child in his or her professional capacity or within the scope of his or her employment whom he or she reasonably suspects has been the victim of child abuse must report such suspected instance of child abuse to a child protective agency immediately or as soon as practically possible by telephone and shall prepare and send a written report thereof within 36 hours of receiving the information concerning the incident. Also, any childcare employee who has knowledge of or who reasonably suspects that mental suffering has been inflicted on a child or its emotional well being is endangered in any way may report such suspected instance of child abuse to a child protective agency. Infliction of willful and unjustifiable mental suffering must be reported.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINE California Education Code Section 49423 provides that designated school personnel may assist pupils who are required to take medications during regular school days only when the Physician Authorization/Parent Statement Form #F-1070 is completed in its entirety and state regulations are complied with.

• Only when such medications are prescribed by a physician, and • Only if the school receives specified written statements from the physician prescribing the

medication and the medication is in a container with the prescription label, and • Only if the school receives specified written statements from the parents/guardians of the pupil. • These rules also apply to over-the-counter medications. (Must be in original packaging.)

NO MEDICATIONS WILL BE GIVEN TO YOUR CHILD WITHOUT THESE AUTHORIZATIONS. The two page Physician Authorization/Parent Statement Form #F-1070 is included in the Appendix at the back of this Parent Handbook. Additional forms are also available upon request from the center and the PV Kids’ Corner business office. New form(s) must be completed each school year and whenever the medication regimen is changed. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT Children and parents must sign a Behavior Contract that outlines expected behavior at PV Kids’ Corner, see page 13. This Behavior Contract, and the PVPUSD Safe Schools Policy and Electronic Resources Policy, apply to all students enrolled in any PV Kids’ Corner Program. Behavior expectations are consistent with District disciplinary policies.

To ensure a safe, nurturing and positive environment, unacceptable behavior will be handled firmly by staff. Discipline procedures used by staff are assertive, rather than aggressive, and are designed to be fair, consistent and preserve a child’s self-respect. Positive reinforcement, warnings and assertive discipline that may include removal from a group situation or denial of a privilege may be used. Positive conflict management strategies are taught to help children deal with problems.

Staff will ask for a conference if disruptive or unacceptable behavior persists so we can work together to change the behavior. If a child poses a direct threat to the safety or health of himself, another child, or an adult, or the child refuses to cooperate and follow directions, the parents will be contacted to pick up the child. If a child has been sent home from school, dismissed from class or sent to the office for behavior reasons, he/she may not attend any PV Kids’ Corner Program, including Elementary Enrichment, until eligible to return to school.

The first time a child is sent home from PV Kids’ Corner will be a one-day suspension. The next time a child is sent home from PV Kids’ Corner will be a three-day suspension. The third time a child is suspended and sent home is cause for dismissal from the PV Kids’ Corner Program. Severe behavior issues may result in immediate dismissal from the program. DISMISSAL Parents will be given notice in writing, in person, or by a phone call from the PV Kids’ Corner business office or Center Supervisor if a child is going to be dismissed from the program. Children may be dismissed for the following reasons:

1. Their behavior endangers the safety, health or security of themselves or others in the program. 2. All fees, contracted or incurred, are not paid as agreed or outlined in this Parent Handbook. 3. Policies as outlined in this Parent Handbook are not followed.

Page 20: PV KIDS’ CORNER - · PDF fileam pmkp parent/guardian information

10

ILLNESS

Upon arrival, each child receives a visual health check for signs of illness. Do not bring your child to the program if he/she has a fever or chills, persistent congested cough, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, earache, sore throat, discharge from the eyes, head lice, unexplained rash or skin irritations. If a child arrives ill after school, or becomes ill during the day, parents will be contacted to pick him or her up. Staff will remove children who become ill from the group. Parents must arrange for someone to pick up the child within 30 minutes of receiving notice that the child is ill. If parents cannot be reached, adults listed on the registration forms will be called. All phone numbers must be kept up-to-date and accurate! Children who are too ill to participate in normal activities should not be at PV Kids’ Corner. If a child did not attend school due to illness, he/she will not be allowed into the PV Kids’ Corner or Elementary Enrichment Programs. INJURIES Staff are trained in first aid to handle minor injuries. Staff will notify parents of minor injuries by using the injury report form. Parents must inform staff if their child has any life threatening allergies or medical condition. If it is determined that a physician’s care is needed for an injury, the parent will be notified immediately. If the parent cannot be reached, persons on the registration forms will be called.

The Center Supervisor will take whatever steps necessary to obtain emergency medical care. These steps may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Attempt to contact parent or guardian.

2. Attempt to contact person listed on child’s registration forms.

3. If a parent cannot be contacted or the injury appears serious, 911 may be called and, upon recommendation of paramedics, the child may be transported to an emergency hospital in an emergency vehicle.

If transported in an emergency vehicle, the cost is at the parent’s expense. All expenses incurred in the treatment of injuries are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. PV Kids’ Corner is not liable for injuries due to accident.

INSURANCE

PV Kids’ Corner is not liable for injuries due to accident. All expenses incurred in the treatment of injuries are the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Since the PVPUSD does not provide accident medical insurance for school related injuries, it makes available a variety of affordable insurance plans to help in the event of an accident.

Brochures and registration forms are available by request from the District and PV Kids’ Corner business offices.

Page 21: PV KIDS’ CORNER - · PDF fileam pmkp parent/guardian information

11

EMERGENCIES In the event of an emergency or natural disaster, such as earthquake or flood, the following procedures will be in effect: 1. During the school day, all children will follow the school site disaster plan.

2. Before or after the regular school day or during school break programs, all children will be kept at the center until the parent or other authorized person picks them up. A person authorized by the parent to pick up the child will be requested to present identification before the child is released.

3. Should it be necessary to evacuate a center, the evacuation site will be posted on the center door and every effort will be made to contact parents and guardians.

4. Staff members will remain with the children until they are released to the parent or authorized person.

5. Each school is equipped with sufficient supplies to accommodate children in the event of an emergency.

6. In the event of unforeseen circumstances (power outages, etc.), a parent may be called to pick up the child early.

7. For your child’s safety, please keep registration forms current to assist staff in emergencies. NUTRITION

PV Kids’ Corner children receive a snack at approximately 3:30 p.m. each day. To avoid interfering with individual family dinner times, PV Kids’ Corner does not provide a second afternoon snack. If your child will not be picked up until the end of the day, you may send an additional snack to be eaten after 5:00 p.m.

If your child has food allergies, be sure to indicate them on the Activity Permission and Medical Authorization form. Please complete a new form in its entirety if any information needs to be updated at any time. Due to the many circumstances that are not within PV Kids’ Corner’s control, it cannot be guaranteed that a child with a food allergy will not come in contact with the item.

Lunches are to be eaten at lunchtime. Kindergarten and TK children should bring a sack lunch. At some sites, students may be able to pre-purchase a sack lunch from Food Services. We encourage children to eat breakfast before arriving at PV Kids’ Corner, but a table can be set aside for children who must bring their breakfast with them.

Students must bring a ready-to-eat sack lunch and a beverage for minimum days and full care days since Food Services is not open on days when the school is dismissed early or closed. If a child does not have a lunch for a minimum day or a full care day, the parent will be contacted to provide one. CLOTHING

All children should wear play clothes and sturdy shoes for the types of activities they will be involved in during the day. With our unpredictable Palos Verdes climate, a sweater or jacket is a good idea. These items, and all coats, raincoats, boots, backpacks, etc. must have an easily read label with the child’s full name securely attached.

Page 22: PV KIDS’ CORNER - · PDF fileam pmkp parent/guardian information

12

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

All personal items must be clearly labeled with the child’s name. PV Kids’ Corner is not responsible for an item should it be broken, lost, or stolen. We do not allow children to play with items from home without permission from PV Kids’ Corner and the parent or guardian. Children should not bring large sums of money or valuable items to school and PV Kids’ Corner (i.e. tape recorders, radios, electronic games, etc.). Children may not bring toys, sporting equipment, or pets to PV Kids’ Corner unless prior arrangement has been made with staff. Personal items that are brought for use during school hours must be put away during time at PV Kids’ Corner. RECREATIONAL RELEASE

For any child attending a recreational activity separate from PV Kids’ Corner (soccer, Brownies, etc.), we must have a note, signed by the parent, giving permission for the child to leave the center to attend. Once children leave for these activities, it is the parent’s responsibility to arrange for the child to be picked up from the activity or returned to PV Kids’ Corner. INDIVIDUAL CENTER DIFFERENCES PV Kids’ Corner was created to meet the needs of District families, and we recognize that family needs may vary somewhat from school to school. A strong partnership of staff and parents will give direction for program changes or additions. This handbook is written to cover basic policies. You will be informed, in writing, if variations particular to your center are developed. COMMUNICATION

Communication that is frequent, positive and constructive is necessary for each child’s progress, growth and development. There are several ways to ensure this. Parent Communication Folders Each family has a communication file folder at their PV Kids’ Corner center. Check yours daily for billing statements, payment receipts and other important messages. Parent communication folders may not be used for personal notes or payments. Please use the payment box for all payments.

Bulletin Boards Next to the parent communication folders is a bulletin board. Much useful and interesting information for families is posted here. Be sure to check this daily for important announcements and updates.

Fostering Family-Staff Communication Ongoing communication is one of the most important elements of the relationship between families and program staff. Because we see parents on a daily basis, we are able to build continuous, positive relationships and communicate about many issues. Staff welcomes a question such as “How did the day go?” Formal conferences can be arranged whenever the parents or staff determine one is needed.

Communication Protocol We encourage parents to have informal daily communication with staff. The Center Supervisor is the first step in solving problems or answering major questions. The next level of communication may be with the PV Kids’ Corner Director. The PV Kids’ Corner business office can best resolve any billing questions should the Center Supervisor not have the answer.

Every attempt should be made for students to take all medications at home. For example, medicationsrequired three times per day can be taken before school, after school and at bedtime. Parents (or otheradults designated by the parent) may also bring medication to school and administer it to their child.

REGULATIONS FOR ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

Medication for elementary and intermediate students is to be brought to school by a responsible adult and kept in a locked container in the health office. No more than one month's supply may be kept at school. If liquid medication is required, a suitable measuring device must be provided (no teaspoons).

Students are not permitted to have in their possession or take any medication (either prescription or over the counter) at school unless the necessary form is completed by the physician and parent. Students may take medication during the school day only if it is necessary that they have it to remain in school. This applies to both prescription and over the counter medications. California Education Code, Section 49423, allows the student to take medication or be assisted with taking the medication during the school day, if the following requirements are met:

a. Parent/guardian must sign a statement requesting that school personnel assist the pupil in taking medication during school hours (EC 49423). b. The physician must sign a statement detailing the method, amount and time schedules by which such medication will be taken (EC 49423). c. The medication bottle provided by the parent must have the prescription label, complete with the pupil's name and doctor's instructions. Over the counter medication must be in the original labeled container. d. Parent request and physician statement must be renewed at least annually; new signed physician and parent statements must be submitted if the medication regimen is changed.

e. In the absence of the school nurse, the school administrator shall designate other school personnel who may assist the student with medication (EC 49423). The school district reserves the right to determine the most appropriate staff member to administer medication.

Students may carry inhalers only if the physician certifies in writing that this is necessary. A back-up inhaler should be kept in the Health Office as well. Students requiring daily medications at home for conditions such as seizure disorders, diabetes, asthma, etc., should have a three day supply of medications at school in the event of a natural disaster. Forms to be completed by the physician and parent are available in the school's health office.
