Designed for• Capital efficiency

• Vanity-free design eliminates excessive features that do not contribute to overall performance

• Operational efficiency• Energy efficiency• Cooling efficiency• High serviceability: tool-less repair and cold-aisle operation• Easy maintenance: vanity-free design provides high MTBF• Manageability

• High compute & storage density• Scalability• Flexibility

Rack solution that integrates QCT servers, storage and TOR switches inspired by Open Compute Project (OCP) standards

Delivering the highest level of efficiency required by hyperscale datacenters such as Facebook

16

Page 17: QCT Introduction-2015 03-English (16 to 9)

Highly optimized with a unified, flexible design, Rackgo M offers superior performance with minimized TCO for cloud-scale datacenters that provide a diverse range of cloud services and/or deploy services in global datacenters with different infrastructure requirements.

A rack solution based on the Open CloudServer version 2 (OCS v2) standard contributed to the Open Compute Project (OCP) by Microsoft.

An innovative solution offers performance, density, availability, flexibility, scalability, and ease of use/deployment.

• Facebook's new Quanta-built servers are 13 per cent more efficient than the machines it was using previously.

Facebook, Jonathan Heiliger, 2011.04 on The Register

• Thanks to OCP, Facebook has saved more than one billion in the last three years.

Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, 2013.01 on OCP Summit

• Original-design manufacturers, as companies such as Quanta are definitely an important part of the disruption.

Facebook, Frank Frankovsky, 2014 on Wall Street Journal

• There were early concerns about the quality of OCP iron versus machines from tier one server and storage array makers, but Rackspace has found these machines to be slightly more reliable. “If you have fewer components, you have fewer things to break”

Rackspace, COO, Mark Roenigk, 2014.09 on EnterpriseTech

Page 19: QCT Introduction-2015 03-English (16 to 9)

• The result is a data center full of vanity free servers which is 38% more efficient and 24% less expensive to build and run than other state-of-the-art data centers.

OCP, http://www.opencompute.org/

• These servers are optimized for Windows Server software and built to handle the enormous availability, scalability and efficiency requirements of Windows Azure, our cloud platform. They offer dramatic improvements over traditional enterprise server designs: up to 40 percent server cost savings, 15 percent power efficiency gains, and 50 percent reduction in deployment and service times.

Microsoft, Bill Liang, 2014.01 on Data Center Knowledge

• Facebook says it saved US$1.2 billion on energy and computer-management costs over three years by redesigning its software and hardware. Facebook executives say Quanta was a contributor.

Wall Street Journal, 2014.06

What Others Said about OCP Benefits?

19

Page 20: QCT Introduction-2015 03-English (16 to 9)

• Large cloud services providers go to extreme efforts to optimize the costs and capabilities of their facilities and infrastructure devices because, at their scale, small benefits can yield large business impacts.

• The goals are the same — that is, to minimize operational costs and to create an environment that can adapt to change.

• The computing and networking hardware is also similarly optimized by eliminating components that are not needed within a data center.

• In addition to the cost savings, so-called commoditization at this level enables these firms to rapidly swap-out failing equipment or, as demands dictate, deploy new servers, providing the business greater agility.

Use Web-Scale (Hyper-scale) IT to Make Enterprise IT Competitive with The Cloud

20

Page 21: QCT Introduction-2015 03-English (16 to 9)

Strategic Technology Trend: Web-Scale (Hyper-scale) Singularity Means Goodbye to Conventional IT Wisdom

• Enterprise IT organizations have made limited progress in the battle to manage costs and improve effectiveness using traditional IT products and services.

• The rise of Web-scale IT architecture is beginning to challenge the market leadership positions of conventional hardware and software suppliers.

• A new sense of innovation is beginning to pervade the industry that likely will have additional benefits further down the line for large cloud services firms, as well as traditional enterprises.

• By 2017, Web-scale IT will be an architectural approach found operating in 50% of global enterprises, up from less than 10% in 2013.

• Enterprises adopting a Web-scale IT philosophy will largely eschew the acquisition of expensive, scale-up computing, storage and networking resources in favor of lower-cost, open-source-derived hardware that bypasses the traditional infrastructure "middlemen."

• Enterprise IT organizations should set up a team to become knowledgeable in Web-scale IT, OCP, etc., and develop a road map showing how these technologies and processes could be used in their infrastructures.
